Internet Industry Competition Dynamics: Peering Limitations, Exposure, And Counter Strategies, Seungjae Shin, Jack E. Tucci Jan 2007

Internet Industry Competition Dynamics: Peering Limitations, Exposure, And Counter Strategies, Seungjae Shin, Jack E. Tucci

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The Internet industry is vertically integrated with Internet Backbone Providers (IBPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs.) Although there are many ISPs and IBPs in each stream, both markets are considered independent oligopolies in that there are a few dominant competitors in each market. It is generally accepted that the Internet industry structure has evolved into a four-tier hierarchical structure. The synergistic and codependent nature of the Internet industry is the key element in understanding the competitive environment in which both IBP’s and ISP’s cooperate. Peering is an efficient way to exchange traffic freely within the access tier, nevertheless competitive constraints …

Energy And Environmental Contributions Of Corn-Ethanol, Adam Liska, Kenneth Cassman, Haishun Yang Jan 2007

Energy And Environmental Contributions Of Corn-Ethanol, Adam Liska, Kenneth Cassman, Haishun Yang

Adam Liska Papers

Rapid development of regulatory mechanisms to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions requires that the biofuel industry employ standard methods to evaluate biofuel systems comprising both crop production systems and biorefineries. Biofuel systems associated with a variety of organic feedstocks have a range of performance capabilities, and recent life-cycle assessment studies of these different systems have used inconsistent methods, leading to confusion about biofuel energy efficiency and GHG mitigation. Hence, there is a critical need for well documented life-cycle metrics for consistent biofuel evaluation that are established and supported by a national or international governing body. Standardization of net energy and …

Ultrasonic Characterization Of Microstructure Evolution During Processing, Liyong Yang, Joseph A. Turner, Zheng Li Jan 2007

Ultrasonic Characterization Of Microstructure Evolution During Processing, Liyong Yang, Joseph A. Turner, Zheng Li

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Many cold-working processes for polycrystalline metals cause alignment of the grains with a single symmetry axis. This type of microstructure is called fiber texture. The existence of a preferred orientation of the grains has a significant influence on the propagation and scattering of ultrasonic waves, which are often used for material inspection. Knowledge of the wave attenuation of such textured materials is of both theoretical and practical interest to nondestructive testing and materials characterization. In this article, the quantitative relations between fiber texture and wave attenuations of hexagonal crystals are presented. The texture is characterized by a Gaussian distribution function …

Demonstration Of Magnetoelectric Scanning Probe Microscopy, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, Liyang Dai, Manfred Wuttig, Ichiro Takeuchi, Eckhard Quandt

Faculty Publications

A near-field room temperature scanning magnetic probe microscope has been developed using a laminated magnetoelectric sensor. The simple trilayer longitudinal-transverse mode sensor, fabricated using Metglas as the magnetostrictive layer and polyvinylidene fluoride as the piezoelectric layer, shows an ac field sensitivity of 467±3μV∕Oe in the measured frequency range of 200Hz–8kHz. The microscope was used to image a 2mm diameter ring carrying an ac current as low as 10−5A. ac fields as small as 3×10−10T have been detected.

Rapid Structural Mapping Of Ternary Metallic Alloy Systems Using The Combinatorial Approach And Cluster Analysis, C. J. Long, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, M. Murakami, R. C. Srivastava, I. Takeuchi, V. L. Karen, X. Li

Faculty Publications

We are developing a procedure for the quick identification of structural phases in thin film composition spread experiments which map large fractions of compositional phase diagrams of ternary metallic alloy systems. An in-house scanning x-ray microdiffractometer is used to obtain x-ray spectra from 273 different compositions on a single composition spread library. A cluster analysissoftware is then used to sort the spectra into groups in order to rapidly discover the distribution of phases on the ternary diagram. The most representative pattern of each group is then compared to a database of known structures to identify known phases. Using this method, …

Short-Time Transient Analysis Of Intercalation Of An Ion Into A Sphere, Sheba Devan, Ralph E. White Jan 2007

Short-Time Transient Analysis Of Intercalation Of An Ion Into A Sphere, Sheba Devan, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A short-time transient analysis is presented for a sinusoidal input potential for a spherical particle. The objective of this work was to extract accurate values of the parameters associated with an intercalation into a spherical particle. These parameters are exchange current density, double-layer capacitance, and diffusion coefficient. The effects of these parameters on the response were examined using a sensitivity analysis, which indicated that optimum frequency values of the input perturbation exist for estimation of these parameters. A procedure is presented to obtain all these parameters using the short-time response. The results show that the short-time analysis is a useful …

Analytical Expression For The Impedance Response Of An Insertion Electrode Cell, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White Jan 2007

Analytical Expression For The Impedance Response Of An Insertion Electrode Cell, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

An analytical expression for the impedance response of an insertion cathode/separator/foil anode cell sandwich is presented. The analytical expression includes the impedance contributions from interfacial kinetics, double-layer adsorption, and solution-phase and solid-phase diffusion processes. The validity of the analytical solution is ascertained by comparison with the numerical solution obtained for a LiCoO2 /polypropylene/lithium metal cell. The flexibility of the analytical solution is utilized to analyze various limiting conditions. An expression to estimate solid-phase diffusion coefficient of insertion species in a porous electrode influenced by the solution-phase diffusion process is also derived

Simulation Of Polarization Curves For Oxygen Reduction Reaction In 0.5 M H2So4 At A Rotating Ring Disk Electrode, Qingbo Dong, Shriram Santhanagopalan, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A cylindrical two-dimensional model based on the Nernst–Planck equations, the Navier–Stokes equation, and the continuity equation is used to simulate the oxygen reduction reaction in 0.5MH2SO4 at a rotating ring disk electrode. Concentration distributions and a potential profile are obtained as a function of the axial and radial distances from the center of the electrode surface. Polarization curves are simulated to interpret experimental results by studying various reaction mechanisms, i.e., the four-electron-transfer reduction of oxygen, the two-electron-transfer reduction of oxygen, a combination of the above two reactions, mechanisms with reduction of peroxide to water, and/or the heterogeneous …

Moving Boundary Model For The Discharge Of A Licoo2 Electrode, Qi Zhang, Ralph E. White Jan 2007

Moving Boundary Model For The Discharge Of A Licoo2 Electrode, Qi Zhang, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A moving boundary model in a spherical LiCoO2 particle is presented to account for the diffusion controlled phase transition in LiCoO2 solid particles, and this model is incorporated into a porous electrode model for the LiCoO2 electrode. The simulation results agree well with the experimental data of a LiCoO2 electrode. A study of the flux distribution in the porous electrode shows that the phase transition phenomenon in the LiCoO2particles has a significant effect on the flux distribution by changing the solid phase diffusion resistance in the particles.

The Levenberg-Marquardt method was used to estimate parameters in the models such as the diffusion of lithium ions in the positive electrode. A confidence interval for each parameter was also presented. The parameter values lie within their confidence intervals. The use of statistical weights to correct for the scatter in experimental data as well as to treat one set of …

Effect Of Water On The Electrochemical Oxidation Of Gas-Phase So2 In A Pem Electrolyzer For H2 Production, John Staser, Ramaraja P. Ramasamy, Premkumar Sivasubramanian, John W. Weidner Jan 2007

Effect Of Water On The Electrochemical Oxidation Of Gas-Phase So2 In A Pem Electrolyzer For H2 Production, John Staser, Ramaraja P. Ramasamy, Premkumar Sivasubramanian, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

Water plays a critical role in producing hydrogen from the electrochemical oxidation of SO2 in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer. Not only is water needed to keep the membrane hydrated, but it is also a reactant. One way to supply water is to dissolve SO2 in sulfuric acid and feed that liquid to the anode, but this process results in significant diffusion resistance for the SO2. Alternatively, we have developed a process where SO2 is fed as a gas to the anode compartment and reacts with water crossing the membrane to produce sulfuric acid. There was concern that the …

Effect Of Diphenyl Siloxane On The Catalytic Activity Of Pt On Carbon, Vijay A. Sethuraman, John W. Weidner, Lesia V V. Protsailo Jan 2007

Effect Of Diphenyl Siloxane On The Catalytic Activity Of Pt On Carbon, Vijay A. Sethuraman, John W. Weidner, Lesia V V. Protsailo

Faculty Publications

The effect of silicone on the catalytic activity of Pt for oxygen reduction and hydrogen adsorption was studied using diphenyl siloxane as a source compound at a rotating disk electrode (RDE). Diphenyl siloxane did not affect the catalytic activity of Pt when it was injected into the electrolyte. However, it blocked the oxygen reduction reaction when it was premixed with the catalyst. Proton transport was not blocked in either case. We postulate that diphenyl siloxane induces hydrophobicity and causes local water starvation, thereby blocking oxygen transport. Hence, the slow leaching of silicone seals in a fuel cell could cause silicon …

Low-Temperature Synthesis Of A Ptru/Nb0.1ti0.9o2 Electrocatalyst For Methanol Oxidation, Brenda L. García, Roderick Fuentes, John W. Weidner Jan 2007

Low-Temperature Synthesis Of A Ptru/Nb0.1ti0.9o2 Electrocatalyst For Methanol Oxidation, Brenda L. García, Roderick Fuentes, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

Niobium was doped into anatase TiO2 support at 10 mol % (Nb0.1Ti0.9O2) using sol-gel chemistry. A PtRu/Nb0.1Ti0.9O2 catalyst was synthesized by LiBH4 reduction in tetrahydrofuran. The methanol electro-oxidation activity of the catalyst shows that this oxide support was electrically conductive. The current (A/gPt) was 6% higher on the PtRu/Nb0.1Ti0.9O2 catalyst compared to a commercial PtRu/C catalyst at 25°C. The electrochemically active surface area of the PtRu/C was 94% higher than PtRu/Nb0.1Ti0.9O2, thus the current per active site was 100% higher on PtRu/Nb0.1Ti0.9O2. A membrane electrode assembly with PtRu/Nb0.1Ti0.9O2 had 46% higher current (A/gPt) than an equivalent E-TEK membrane electrode assembly …

Exafs Characterization Of Dendrimer-Derived Pt/Γ-Al2o3, A. Siani, O. S. Alexeev, C. T. Williams, Harry J. Ploehn, M. D. Amiridis

Faculty Publications

The various steps involved in the preparation of a Pt/-Al2O3 material using hydroxyl-terminated generation four (G4OH) PAMAM dendrimers as templates were monitored by EXAFS. The results indicate that Cl ligands in the Pt precursors (H2PtCl6 and K2PtCl4) were partially replaced by aquo ligands upon hydrolysis to form [PtCl3(H2O)3]+ and [PtCl2(H2O)2] species. After interaction of such species with G4OH, Cl ligands from the first coordination shell of Pt were further replaced by nitrogen atoms from the dendrimer interior, …

Developing An Online Tool For Delivering Research Results: An Update To The Oregon Department Of Transportation’S Crash Reduction Factor Database, Christopher Monsere, Aaron Breakstone, Robert Bertini, Douglas Bish Jan 2007

Developing An Online Tool For Delivering Research Results: An Update To The Oregon Department Of Transportation’S Crash Reduction Factor Database, Christopher Monsere, Aaron Breakstone, Robert Bertini, Douglas Bish

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Often, the challenge for the practitioner in disseminating research results is to package and present them in a manner that is accessible and easy to use while still providing depth, guidance, and necessary information. In most cases, final research reports are made available in printed form and online; however, for some applications, converting a report to a more interactive online report (tool) can produce results that are easier for the user to access. This is particularly true in this age of information overload and as practitioners find themselves needing to "do more with less." This paper describes how research results …

Aeronautical Telemetry Using Multiple-Antenna Transmitters, Michael A. Jensen, Michael D. Rice, Adam L. Anderson Jan 2007

Aeronautical Telemetry Using Multiple-Antenna Transmitters, Michael A. Jensen, Michael D. Rice, Adam L. Anderson

Faculty Publications

The placement of multiple antennas on an air vehicle is one possible practice for overcoming signal obstruction created by vehicle maneuvering during air-to-ground transmission. Unfortunately, for vehicle attitudes where more than one of these antennas has a clear path to the receiving station, this practice also leads to self-interference nulls, resulting in dramatic degradation in the average signal integrity. This paper discusses application of unitary space-time codes such as the Alamouti transmit diversity scheme and unitary differential space-time codes to overcome the self-interference effect observed in such systems. The mathematical foundations of these techniques within the context of this application …

Stochastic Models For Enhancing Agility Of Supply Chains, Alok K. Verma Jan 2007

Stochastic Models For Enhancing Agility Of Supply Chains, Alok K. Verma

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

This paper deals with the application of stochastic inventory model to the three-tier supply chain and verifying the values obtained by mathematical model with discrete event simulation. We investigate three-stage serial supply chain with stochastic demand and fixed replenishment lead-time. Inventory holding costs are charged at each stage, and each stage may incur a consumer backorder penalty cost charged by primary supplier to secondary supplier. The customer-demand follows Poisson distribution. We implement Base Stock model for inventory control at both suppliers. Computer simulation is then designed in such a way that it satisfied all the assumptions for mathematical model. Simulation …

Identifying University Minors To Support The Construction Specialization Area Within A Civil Engineering Technology Program, Vernon Lewis, Carol Considine

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Construction programs at many universities are diversified and provide students with opportunities to examine topic areas that include mechanical and electrical systems, safety, business administration, residential construction, real estate, and management. It is impossible for small civil engineering technology programs with a construction emphasis to encompass all of these expertise areas. As industry looks for students with a knowledge base in these areas, it is incumbent upon programs to find avenues to provide these educational opportunities to their students.

To meet the upper division general education requirements for Old Dominion University, students must have either a minor, second major or …

Multi-Phase Flow Analysis In Oil And Gas Engineering Systems And Its Modelling, Orlando F. Ayala, Luis F. Ayala, Orlando M. Ayala

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

[Introduction] Two-phase flow is very common in industrial processes and its applications were already in use in ages as remote as the era of Archimedes. At the present time, many industrial processes rely on multi-phase phenomena for the transport of energy and mass or for material processing. During the last century, the nuclear, chemical and petroleum industries propelled intense research activity in the area. Their efforts have been aimed at the demystification of the mechanisms taking place during this complex flow situation.

A solar collector to convert CO2 to CO at high temperature was previously developed, achieving a product with 4-6 mol % CO from pure CO2. Modeling results showed that reactions occurred in the thermal boundary layer of the heated zirconia rod at temperatures greater than 2300 K. This paper describes results of computer modeling of advanced designs meant to increase the conversion of CO from CO2. Several design modifications were tested using the model, including changing the cool-down region configuration, increasing the zirconia rod diameter, and changing the zirconia rod shape. Several operational adjustments were also modeled, including reducing the …

Heat And Mass Transport In Heat Pipe Wick Structures, Brian D. Iverson, Tyler W. Davis, Suresh V. Garimella, Mark T. North, Sukhvinder S. Kang Jan 2007

Heat And Mass Transport In Heat Pipe Wick Structures, Brian D. Iverson, Tyler W. Davis, Suresh V. Garimella, Mark T. North, Sukhvinder S. Kang

Faculty Publications

A novel experimental approach is developed for characterizing the performance of heat pipe wick structures. This approach simulates the actual operation of wick structures in a heat pipe. Open, partially submerged, sintered copper wicks of varying pore size are studied under the partially saturated conditions found in normal heat pipe operation. A vertical wick orientation, where the capillary lift is in opposition to gravity, is selected to test the wicks under the most demanding conditions. Mass transport measurements of the working fluid, in addition to the temperature field, are obtained for the porous wicks under the action of a discrete …

Modeling And Analysis Of The Eds Maglev System With The Halbach Magnet Array, Wonsuk Ko Jan 2007

Modeling And Analysis Of The Eds Maglev System With The Halbach Magnet Array, Wonsuk Ko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The magnetic field analysis based on the wavelet transform is performed. The Halbach array magnetic field analysis has been studied using many methods such as magnetic scalar potential, magnetic vector potential, Fourier analysis and Finite Element Methods. But these analyses cannot identify a transient oscillation at the beginning stage of levitation. The wavelet transform is used for analyzing the transient oscillatory response of an EDS Maglev system. The proposed scheme explains the under-damped dynamics that results from the cradle's dynamic response to the irregular distribution of the magnetic field. It suggests this EDS Maglev system that responds to a vertical …

Towards A Self-Calibrating Video Camera Network For Content Analysis And Forensics, Imran Junejo Jan 2007

Towards A Self-Calibrating Video Camera Network For Content Analysis And Forensics, Imran Junejo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to growing security concerns, video surveillance and monitoring has received an immense attention from both federal agencies and private firms. The main concern is that a single camera, even if allowed to rotate or translate, is not sufficient to cover a large area for video surveillance. A more general solution with wide range of applications is to allow the deployed cameras to have a non-overlapping field of view (FoV) and to, if possible, allow these cameras to move freely in 3D space. This thesis addresses the issue of how cameras in such a network can be calibrated and how …

Shock-Tube Investigation Of Ignition Delay Times Of Blends Of Methane And Ethane With Oxygen, Brian Christopher Walker Jan 2007

Shock-Tube Investigation Of Ignition Delay Times Of Blends Of Methane And Ethane With Oxygen, Brian Christopher Walker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The combustion behavior of methane and ethane is important to the study of natural gas and other alternative fuels that are comprised primarily of these two basic hydrocarbons. Understanding the transition from methane-dominated ignition kinetics to ethane-dominated kinetics for increasing levels of ethane is also of fundamental interest toward the understanding of hydrocarbon chemical kinetics. Much research has been conducted on the two fuels individually, but experimental data of the combustion of blends of methane and ethane is limited to ratios that recreate typical natural gas compositions (up to ~20% ethane molar concentration). The goal of this study was to …

Optimization Of Zonal Wavefront Estimation And Curvature Measurements, Weiyao Zou Jan 2007

Optimization Of Zonal Wavefront Estimation And Curvature Measurements, Weiyao Zou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Optical testing in adverse environments, ophthalmology and applications where characterization by curvature is leveraged all have a common goal: accurately estimate wavefront shape. This dissertation investigates wavefront sensing techniques as applied to optical testing based on gradient and curvature measurements. Wavefront sensing involves the ability to accurately estimate shape over any aperture geometry, which requires establishing a sampling grid and estimation scheme, quantifying estimation errors caused by measurement noise propagation, and designing an instrument with sufficient accuracy and sensitivity for the application. Starting with gradient-based wavefront sensing, a zonal least-squares wavefront estimation algorithm for any irregular pupil shape and size …
