Study Of Sinx And Sio2 Passivation Of Gan Surfaces, S. A. Chevtchenko, M. A. Reshchikov, Q. Fan, X. Ni, Y. T. Moon, A. A. Baski, H. Morkoç

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

The optical properties of GaN films have been found to be sensitive to SiNx and SiO2 surface passivation. The main effect of such passivation on photoluminescence(PL) data is an increase of the PL intensity for near-band-edge emission. This effect is attributed to the removal of oxygen from the surface of GaN and the subsequent formation of a protective layer during passivation. The increase in PL intensity is more pronounced for samples passivated with SiO2, which demonstrate initially lower PL intensity and a lower equilibrium concentration of free electrons. A nearly constant band bending of approximately 1.0 eV at the surface …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

BaO(Fe2O3)6 (BaM) thin films were deposited by pulsed laser deposition on GaN∕Al2O3 substrates. A pole figure obtained from the (006) reflection indicated that ∼81% of the film volume had the c axis tilted less than 5° from the film normal. A low anisotropy field was inferred from vector coil vibrating sample magnetometer (VVSM) measurements. The reduction in Hafrom literature values and a two-step switching of the easy axis magnetization is postulated to result from interdiffusion and misalignment effects. To alleviate interdiffusion and to improve the c-axis alignment, experiments were repeated with lower deposition temperatures, thinner films, and MgO buffer layers. …

Magnetotransport Properties Of Alxga1-Xn/Aln/Gan Heterostructures Grown On Epitaxial Lateral Overgrown Gan Templates, N. Biyikli, X. Ni, Y. Fu, J. Xie, H. Morkoç, H. Cheng, Ç. Kurdak, I. Vurgaftman, J. R. Meyer Jan 2007

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

We studied the low-temperature magnetotransport properties of AlxGa1−xN∕AlN∕GaN heterostructures with a two-dimensional electron gas(2DEG). Structures with different Al compositions were grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy on three types of templates: conventional undoped GaN, in situ epitaxial lateral overgrown GaN using a SiNx nanomask layer, and ex situe pitaxial lateral overgrown GaN (ELO-GaN) using a stripe-patterned SiO2 mask. All of the samples display Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) oscillations that confirm the existence of 2DEGs. Field-dependent magnetoresistance and Hall measurements further indicate that the overgrown heterostructures have a parallel conducting layer in addition to the 2DEG. To characterize the parallel channel, we …

Automatic Transmit Power Control Of A Digital Fixed Wireless Link With Co-Channel Interference, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Kyoung-Whoan Suh, Joo-Hwan Lee Jan 2007

Automatic Transmit Power Control Of A Digital Fixed Wireless Link With Co-Channel Interference, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Kyoung-Whoan Suh, Joo-Hwan Lee

Faculty Publications

In this paper, a study is presented of the dynamic behavior of an automatic transmit power control (ATPC) loop in a single fixed wireless system (FWS) link subject to multipath fading and an uncorrelated co-channel interferer that does not use ATPC (this represents a so-called non-ATPC FWS link or a fixed satellite link). Fundamental questions include the sensitivity of an ATPC link to multipath interference and the co-channel interference that may be caused by a non-ATPC interferer. In the context of the present project, a good example of a non-ATPC interferer is a fixed satellite to which one antenna in …

Cool Flame Propagation Speeds, Michael R. Foster, Howard Pearlman Jan 2007

Cool Flame Propagation Speeds, Michael R. Foster, Howard Pearlman

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Cool flames are studied at reduced-gravity in a closed, unstirred, spherical reactor to minimize complexities associated with natural convection. Under such conditions, transport is controlled by diffusive fluxes and the flames are observed to propagate radially outward from the center of the reactor toward the wall. Intensified video records are obtained and analyzed to determine the flame radius as a function of time for different vessel temperatures (593–623 K) and initial pressures (55.2–81.4 kPa) using an equimolar (Ø = 5) propane-oxygen premixture. Polynomial-fits are applied to the data and differentiated to determine the cool flame propagation speeds. In nearly …

Evaluating Management Decisions To Reduce Environmental Risk Of Roadside-Applied Herbicides, Ben D. Giudice, Arash Massoudieh, Thomas M. Young Jan 2007

Evaluating Management Decisions To Reduce Environmental Risk Of Roadside-Applied Herbicides, Ben D. Giudice, Arash Massoudieh, Thomas M. Young

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Management decisions concerning the spraying of herbicides on highway roadsides are evaluated on the basis of their impact on resulting environmental risk. A mathematical transport model was previously applied to the State of California with a Monte Carlo technique, and in this study the results are manipulated to evaluate the risk reduction that results from restricting herbicide application on the basis of site characteristics or changing other application practices. Results show that eliminating herbicide applications where the slope of the grass adjacent to the highway is greater than 30° has little or no effect on risk. Eliminating application where the …

Quantitative Analysis Of Polycrystalline Electron Diffraction Patterns, Xingzhong Li Jan 2007

Quantitative Analysis Of Polycrystalline Electron Diffraction Patterns, Xingzhong Li

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Image processing and computer-assisted analysis are very important in electron microscopy/crystallography, e.g., computer programs have been well developed for image processing and simulation for high-resolution electron microscopy images, and are widely used in research. Unfortunately, few computer programs have been developed for analysis and processing electron diffraction ring patterns. Facing this situation, Labar [1] developed ProcessDiffraction, a computer program to process electron diffraction patterns from polycrystalline and amorphous samples, with an aim to provides good angular resolution, quantified intensities, and reproducible identification of discontinuous and/or faint rings. For phase identification, it is to compare the generated diffractogram to the X-ray …

Multilingual Articulatory Features For Speech Recognition, Brian M. Ore Jan 2007

Multilingual Articulatory Features For Speech Recognition, Brian M. Ore

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Articulatory features describe the way in which the speech organs are used when producing speech sounds. Research has shown that incorporating this information into speech recognizers can lead to an improvement in system performance. The majority of previous work, however, has been limited to detecting articulatory features in a single language. In this thesis, Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) and Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) were used to detect articulatory features in English, German, Spanish, and Japanese. The outputs of the detectors were used to form the feature set for a Hidden Markov Model (HMM)-based phoneme recognizer. The best overall detection and recognition …

Exponential Disutility Functions In Transportation Problems: A New Theoretical Justification, Ruey L. Cheu, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2007

Exponential Disutility Functions In Transportation Problems: A New Theoretical Justification, Ruey L. Cheu, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In modeling drivers' route choice in stochastic networks, several researchers have successfully used exponential disutility functions. A usual justification for these functions is that they are consistent with common sense and that they lead to simpler computations than several other alternative disutility functions. In principle, such a justification leaves open a possibility that there is some other (yet un-tried) disutility function which is also consistent with common sense and for which the computations are even simpler than for the exponential function. In this paper, we prove that exponential disutility functions are the only ones that are consistent with the (appropriately …

Ultra-Wideband Orthogonal Frequency Coded Saw Correlators, Daniel Gallagher Jan 2007

Ultra-Wideband Orthogonal Frequency Coded Saw Correlators, Daniel Gallagher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ultra-wideband (UWB) communication new technology with ability to share the FCC allocated frequency spectrum, large channel capacity and data rate, simple transceiver architecture and high performance in noisy environments. Such communication advantages have paved the way for emerging wireless technologies such as wireless high definition video streaming, wireless sensor networks and more. This thesis examines orthogonal frequency coded surface acoustic wave (SAW) correlators for use in advanced UWB communication systems. Orthogonal frequency coding (OFC) and pseudo-noise (PN) coding provides a means for UWB spreading of data. The use of OFC spectrally spreads a PN sequence beyond that of CDMA because …

Study Of Soliton Stabilization In D+1 Dimensions Using Novel Analytical And Numerical Techniques, George Nehmetallah, Partha P. Banerjee Jan 2007

Study Of Soliton Stabilization In D+1 Dimensions Using Novel Analytical And Numerical Techniques, George Nehmetallah, Partha P. Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this Chapter, we provide a brief review of the underlying nonlinear Schrödinger and associated equations that model spatio-temporal propagation in one and higher dimensions in a nonlinear dispersive environment. Particular attention is given to fast adaptive numerical techniques to solve such equations, and in the presence of dispersion and nonlinearity management, saturating nonlinearity and nonparaxiality. A unique variational approach is also outlined which helps in determining the ranges of nonlinearity and dispersion parameters to ensure stable solutions of the nonlinear equations. The propagation of 3+1 dimensional spatio-temporal pulses, or optical bullets is also modeled using a fast adaptive split-step …

An Optimized Macrobending Fiber Based Edge Filter, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell, Qian Wang, Ginu Rajan

Articles

An optimized all-fiber edge filter is developed, based on a one-turn macrobending bare fiber structure. The discrimination range (DR) is 16.32 dB over a wavelength range from 1500 to 1600 nm, which can be employed for wavelength measurement applications. It offers a simpler structure compared to the previously developed macrobending fiber loss edge filters, without an increase in the polarization dependent loss (PDL).

A Biofilm Enhanced Miniature Microbial Fuel Cell Using Shewanella Oneidensis Dsp10 And Oxygen Reduction Cathodes, Justin C. Biffinger, Jeremy Pietron, Ricky Ray, Brenda J. Little, Bradley R. Ringeisen Jan 2007

A Biofilm Enhanced Miniature Microbial Fuel Cell Using Shewanella Oneidensis Dsp10 And Oxygen Reduction Cathodes, Justin C. Biffinger, Jeremy Pietron, Ricky Ray, Brenda J. Little, Bradley R. Ringeisen

United States Navy: Publications

Aminiature-microbial fuel cell (mini-MFC, chamber volume: 1.2 mL)was used to monitor biofilm development from a pure culture of Shewanella oneidensis DSP10 on graphite felt (GF) under minimal nutrient conditions. ESEM evidence of biofilm formation on GF is supported by substantial power density (per device cross-section) from the mini-MFC when using an acellular minimal media anolyte (1500mW/m2). These experiments demonstrate that power density per volume for a biofilm flow reactor MFC should be calculated using the anode chamber volume alone (250 W/m3), rather than with the full anolyte volume. Two oxygen reduction cathodes (uncoated GF or a …

Electrical Control Of The Thermodiffusive Instability In Premixed Propane–Air Flames, D. L. Wisman, S. D. Marcum, B. N. Ganguly Jan 2007

Electrical Control Of The Thermodiffusive Instability In Premixed Propane–Air Flames, D. L. Wisman, S. D. Marcum, B. N. Ganguly

United States Air Force: Publications

This work focuses upon the effects of DC electric fields on the stability of downward propagating atmospheric pressure premixed propane–air flames under experimental conditions that provide close coupling of the electric field to the flame. With the appropriate electrode geometry, modest applied voltages are shown to drive a stable conical flame first into a wrinkled-laminar flamelet geometry, and then further toward either a highly unstable distributed flamelet regime or a collective oscillation of the flame front. Applied potentials up through +5 kV over a 40-mm gap encompassing the flame front have been used to force the above transition sequence in …

Use Of Dynamic Incidence Angle For Glide Slope Control Of Autonomous Parafoils, Nathan Slegers, Eric Beyer, Mark Costello Jan 2007

Use Of Dynamic Incidence Angle For Glide Slope Control Of Autonomous Parafoils, Nathan Slegers, Eric Beyer, Mark Costello

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Strickly speaking, most autonomous parafoil and payload aircraft possess only lateral control, achieved by right and left parafoil brake deflection. An innovative new technique to achieve direct longitudinal control through dynamic incidence angle changes is reported. Addition of this extra control channel requires simple rigging changes and an additional servo actuator. The ability of dynamic incidence angle to alter the glide slope of a parafoil and payload aircraft is demonstrated through a flight test program with a micro parafoil system. Results from the flight test program are synthesized and integrated into a 6 degree-of-freedom simulation. The simulation model is subsequently …

Some Peer-To-Peer, Democratically And Voluntarily Produced Thoughts About 'The Wealth Of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets And Freedom,' By Yochai Benkler, Ann Bartow

Law Faculty Scholarship

In this review essay, Bartow concludes that The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom by Yochai Benkler is a book well worth reading, but that Benkler still has a bit more work to do before his Grand Unifying Theory of Life, The Internet, and Everything is satisfactorily complete. It isn't enough to concede that the Internet won't benefit everyone. He needs to more thoroughly consider the ways in which the lives of poor people actually worsen when previously accessible information, goods and services are rendered less convenient or completely unattainable by their migration online. Additionally, the …

Rational Risk/Benefit Analysis Of Genetically Modified Crops, Stanley P. Kowalski

Law Faculty Scholarship

Safety concerns over the use of molecular biotechnology in the improvement of crops has generated substantial, heated and confusing debates, often driven by ideology and hysterics. Modification of crops is not new, and biotechnology (in its broadest sense) has been used for over a century to accelerate the development of new crops for food, feed and fibre, so as to meet the demands of a growing global community. The introduction of crops developed via molecular biotechnology [Genetically Modified Crops (GMCs)] represents the latest step in this inexorable innovative progression of technology. However, misinformed concern has led to a broad embrace …
