Experimental Measurements And Mathematical Modeling Of The Rigid Capillary Dewatering, Vrajesh N. Chokshi
Experimental Measurements And Mathematical Modeling Of The Rigid Capillary Dewatering, Vrajesh N. Chokshi
Masters Theses
Rigid Capillary Dewatering (RCD) technology is a process in which water is removed from a wet paper web by capillary dewatering action without excessive mechanical compaction of the fiber furnish. Operating conditions on the Rigid Capillary Pressing (RCP) roll, and properties of paper and pulp determines the dewatering behavior of the RCD technology.
The dewatering behavior of the RCD technology is studied in four sets of experiments performed using different operating conditions, on a paper pilot machine at a Western Michigan University (WMU) facility. The solids content of the paper web before and after the RCP roll in the press …

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi
This course will introduce fundamental concepts and paradigms underlying the design of modem programming languages. For concreteness, we study the details of an object-oriented language (e.g. Java l, and a functional language (e.g., Scheme). The overall goal is to enable comparison and evaluation of existing languages. The programming assignments will be coded in Java 5 and in Scheme.
Teaching Asynchronous Digital Design In The Undergraduate Computer Engineering Curriculum, Scott C. Smith, Waleed K. Al-Assadi
Teaching Asynchronous Digital Design In The Undergraduate Computer Engineering Curriculum, Scott C. Smith, Waleed K. Al-Assadi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
As demand continues for circuits with higher performance, higher complexity, and decreased feature size, asynchronous (clockless) paradigms will become more widely used in the semiconductor industry, as evidenced by the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors' (ITRS) prediction of a likely shift from synchronous to asynchronous design styles in order to increase circuit robustness, decrease power, and alleviate many clock-related issues. ITRS predicts that asynchronous circuits will account for 19% of chip area within the next 5 years, and 30% of chip area within the next 10 years. To meet this growing industry need, students in Computer Engineering should be introduced …

Combined Training Of Recurrent Neural Networks With Particle Swarm Optimization And Backpropagation Algorithms For Impedance Identification, Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A recurrent neural network (RNN) trained with a combination of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and backpropagation (BP) algorithms is proposed in this paper. The network is used as a dynamic system modeling tool to identify the frequency-dependent impedances of power electronic systems such as rectifiers, inverters, and DC-DC converters. As a category of supervised learning methods, the various backpropagation training algorithms developed for recurrent neural networks use gradient descent information to guide their search for optimal weights solutions that minimize the output errors. While they prove to be very robust and effective in training many types of network structures, they …
A Novel Normalized Cross-Correlation Based Echo-Path Change Detector, M. A. Izbal, Steven L. Grant
A Novel Normalized Cross-Correlation Based Echo-Path Change Detector, M. A. Izbal, Steven L. Grant
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A double-talk detector is used to freeze acoustic echo canceller's (AEC) filter adaptation during periods of near-end speech. Increased sensitivity towards double-talk results in declaring echo-path changes as double-talk which adversely effects the performance of an AEC as we freeze adaptation when we really need to adapt. Thus, we need an efficient and simple echo-path change detector so as to differentiate any echo-path variations from double-talk condition. In this paper, we derive a novel test statistic for echo-path change detection. The proposed decision statistic detects any echo-path variations, is normalized properly and is computationally very efficient as compared to existing …
Determining Equi-Biaxial Residual Stress And Mechanical Properties From The Force-Displacement Curves Of Conical Microindentation, J. Yan, X. Chen, Anette M. Karlsson
Determining Equi-Biaxial Residual Stress And Mechanical Properties From The Force-Displacement Curves Of Conical Microindentation, J. Yan, X. Chen, Anette M. Karlsson
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
An alternative, improved method to determine mechanical properties from indentation testing is presented. This method can determine the elastic modulus, yield strength and equi-biaxial residual stress from one simple test. Furthermore, the technique does not require the knowledge of the contact area during indentation, a parameter that is hard to determine for highly elastic material. The evaluation technique is based on finite element analyses, where explicit formulations are established to correlate the parameter groups governing indentation on stressed specimens.
