Study Of Horizontal Sonic Gas Jets In Gas-Solid Fluidized Beds, Matt Dawe, Cedric Briens, Franco Berruti
Study Of Horizontal Sonic Gas Jets In Gas-Solid Fluidized Beds, Matt Dawe, Cedric Briens, Franco Berruti
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The objective of this study was to measure the jet boundaries of sonic gas jets in a gas-solid fluidized bed using triboelectric probes. An empirical correlation was developed to predict jet penetration based on the results. This correlation was compared with existing correlations developed for sub-sonic gas jets.
A New Fluid Dynamic Model For The Cfd Simulations Of Fluidized Beds, Luca Mazzei, Paola Lettieri
A New Fluid Dynamic Model For The Cfd Simulations Of Fluidized Beds, Luca Mazzei, Paola Lettieri
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
A new Eulerian-Eulerian multidimensional model is proposed for the study of the dynamics of dense fluidized suspensions. The main distinctive feature of this new formulation of the equations of motion resides in the closure relationships adopted to express the fluid-particle interaction force. The force accounts for three contributions: buoyant force, drag force and elastic force. The buoyant force is related to the weight of the fluid displaced by the particles. The drag force is expressed as the product of the drag exerted on an unhindered particle, subject to the same volumetric flux of fluid, and a “corrective function” dependent on …
An Investigation Of Fluidized Bed Scaling Laws By Dem Simulation, John Sanderson, Martin J Rhodes, X. Shan Wang, K. Seng Lim
An Investigation Of Fluidized Bed Scaling Laws By Dem Simulation, John Sanderson, Martin J Rhodes, X. Shan Wang, K. Seng Lim
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
A preliminary investigation of the scaling laws for bubbling fluidized beds was undertaken using Discrete Element Method simulation. Six 2D and two 3D fluidized beds were simulated and compared using bed snapshots and dynamic pressure drop. Beds properly matched by the simplified criteria were in relatively poor agreement; agreement deteriorated further for a large scale change or a particle density mis-match. Simulations matched by the full scaling criteria agreed well at low velocities but deteriorated at higher velocities. The possible reasons for these results are discussed.

Numerical Study Of The Intrinsic And Feedback Dynamics Of A Gas-Solid Fluidized Bed, F. Bonniol, C. Sierra, R. Occelli, H. Bournot, L. Tadrist
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The aim of this paper is to understand the complex spatio-temporal patterning of the dense bed when the inlet conditions can be modified by the bed itself. In this study, the inlet conditions (fluid pressure and velocity upstream the bed) take into account resistive effects from the distributor and capacitive ones from the air-supply system (plenum). The present work addresses particularly the issue of the transition between multiple and single bubble regimes that occurs for some particular inlet conditions.

Comparison Of Simulated And Measured Flow Patterns: Solid And Gas Mixing In A 2d Turbulent Fluidized Bed, Ulla Ojaniemi, Sirpa Kallio, Alf Hermanson, Mikko Manninen, Maiju Seppälä, Veikko Taivassalo
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
Results from experiments done in a 2D turbulent fluidized bed cold model are presented. Experiments were conducted to study flow patterns, particle mixing in the bed and spreading of gas blown from one side into the bed. 2D simulations of the experiments were carried out using the Eulerian multiphase models of the Fluent and MFIX CFD softwares.

Prediction Of The Dynamics Of A Fluidized Bed Reactor Using Artificial Neural Networks, Shayan Karimipour, Navid Mostoufi, Rahmat Sotudeh -Gharebagh
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The dynamic behavior of fluidized bed has been studied based on the chaos theory. The experiments were done in a fluidized bed of 0.15 m diameter using an optical fiber probe. The interval between successive clusters in the fluidized bed were calculated from the time series signals and proved to be chaotic by calculating the correlation dimension. An artificial neural network (ANN) was adapted and trained to predict the generated time series. The ANN results were compared with the predictions of the k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) method to show the superiority of ANN in chaotic time series prediction.

Effect Of The Gas-To-Liquid Ratio On The Performance Of Nozzles Injecting Gas-Atomized Liquid Into A Fluidized Bed, Federica Portoghese, Franco Berruti, Cedric Briens, Lorenzo Ferrante, Edward W. Chan
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
A novel experimental technique using triboelectric and temperature measurements was developed to assess the performance of nozzles injecting gas-atomized liquid into a gas-solid fluidized bed. The effect of varying the gas-to-liquid mass ratio on the nozzle performance was investigated.
The Fluidization Pattern Of Density-Segregating Two-Solid Beds, Bruno Formisani, Rossella Girimonte, Tiziana Longo
The Fluidization Pattern Of Density-Segregating Two-Solid Beds, Bruno Formisani, Rossella Girimonte, Tiziana Longo
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
An experimental work is presented meant to clarify the specific role played by density differences between components in the segregating fluidization process of two-solid beds. The overall behaviour of such systems is characterized by substituting the traditional concept of “minimum fluidization velocity” of the binary mixture with the “velocity interval of fluidization” of the bed, which is limited by its “initial” and “final” fluidization velocity”. The dependence of these characteristic velocities on parameters such as component densities and mixture composition is illustrated by several series of experiments. The experimental results are analysed in the light of the fundamental theory, so …

Void Fraction Near Surfaces Immersed In Fluidized Beds By Heat Transfer Measurements, Francesco Di Natale, Amedeo Lancia, Roberto Nigro
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
A semi-empirical model is used to calculate the averaged surface void fraction in fluidized beds, εw, starting from experimental data on surface-to-bed heat transfer coefficient. The model is able to describe the effect of the main process parameters and shows that εw increases with minimum fluidization void fraction and particle Archimedes number.
Radiation Heat Transfer In Circulating Fluidized Beds, Leon R. Glicksman
Radiation Heat Transfer In Circulating Fluidized Beds, Leon R. Glicksman
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
Prediction of heat transfer between bed walls and adjacent clusters is a challenging problem especially for heat temperature applications. Radiation heat transfer is an important component. An accurate analysis must account for the radiation interactions between elements of the cluster at different distances from the wall. A new model that properly accounts for conduction and radiation within the cluster is compared to several mechanistic models from the literature. Substantial discrepancies are found, requiring a better understanding of the cluster physical behavior at the wall.
Towards Filtered Gas-Solid Flow Models, Juray De Wilde
Towards Filtered Gas-Solid Flow Models, Juray De Wilde
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
To account for meso-scale phenomena in coarse grid simulations, correlation terms appearing in the filtered gas-solid flow equations have to be modeled. Filtered models for the gas-solid momentum transfer are focused on and possible approaches are derived and evaluated. The evaluation supports the combination of an apparent distribution of the filtered gas phase pressure gradient over the phases and an apparent drag force to describe filtered gas-solid momentum transfer. As the filter frequency decreases, the contribution of the apparent distribution of the filtered gas phase pressure gradient over the phases to the filtered description of gas-solid momentum transfer gradually grows …

Throughflow Velocity Crossing The Dome Of Erupting Bubbles In 2-D Fluidized Beds, J. A. Almendros-Ibáñez, C. Sobrino, S. Sánchez-Delgado, D. Santana, M. De Vega, U. Ruiz-Rivas
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
A new non-intrusive method for measuring the throughflow velocity crossing the dome of erupting bubbles in freely bubbling 2-D fluidized beds is presented. Using a high speed video-camera, the dome acceleration, drag force and throughflow velocity profiles are obtained for different experiments, varying the superficial gas velocity. The acceleration profiles show greater values in the dome zone where the gravity component is negligible. The drag force and the throughflow velocity profiles show a uniform value in the central region of the dome (40 deg < < 140 deg) and the total throughflow increases with the superficial gas velocity.

Four Approaches To Structure Gas-Solid Fluidized Beds, J. Ruud Van Ommen, John Nijenhuis, Marc-Olivier Coppens
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
Structuring fluidized beds can facilitate scale-up and increase conversion and selectivity by controlling the bubble size. We present four approaches to structure fluidized beds: oscillating the gas flow, distributing the gas injection, imposing an electric field to induce interparticle forces, and optimising distributed particle properties such as the size.

Gas Fluidization And Pneumatic Conveying In Confined Beds: A Numerical Study, Yurong He, Thang Ngoc Cong, Yulong Ding, Huilin Lu
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The fluidization phenomena for gas-fine particle two-phase flow is numerically simulated in confined fluidized bed based on two-fluid model, applying body-fitted coordination for the irregular geometry zone in this work. The simulation was performed either with a partially packed fluidized bed in the bottom part applying various superficial gas velocities in bubbling region, which is used to study the bubbles formation and the average porosity in the packed zone, or with a whole packed fluidized bed applying various solid flux rates in pneumatic region, which is used to investigate the mechanism in the packed bed. The void fraction of the …

Agglomerate Behaviour In Fluidized Beds, Sarah Weber, Cedric Briens, Franco Berruti, Edward W. Chan, Murray R. Gray
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
Fluidized bed agglomeration is used to stabilize particulate mixtures and reduce dust emissions. Agglomerates and granules that do not conform to size and shape specifications may create problems in downstream processes such as tableting, thus compromising process efficiency and product quality. The objective of the present study was to determine the critical agglomerate liquid content at which the rates of agglomerate growth and shrinkage are balanced when artificial agglomerates made from glass beads and water are introduced into a fluidized bed. This study investigated the effects of agglomerate size and fluidizing gas velocity on the critical initial liquid content. It …

The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The spouted bed type of binderless granulator is one of the most appropriate methods available for producing granules of dry powder inhalation (DPI) from cohesive fine powder. However the compressive strength of produced granule is too small to be measure by conventional method. In this work a new apparatus was developed to evaluate the strength of such a soft granule. Load and displacement curve of the granule were measured by new method of compressive strength measurement. To observe the compression process of the granule, photographs were taken with a microscopic camera. It was clarified that this measurement method was remarkably …

On The Presence Of Particles At The Wall Of Gas Fluidized Beds, Reza Zarghami, Navid Mostoufi, Rahmat Sotudeh-Gharebagh, Jamal Chaouki
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
In this study, the role of hydrodynamics of the dense bed on the particle convection is outlined. The existing models in the literature suggest a constant decrease of particle-wall contact time with an increase in the gas velocity. However, it has been experimentally shown that the contact time increases both in bubbling and turbulent regimes upon increasing the gas velocity. A comprehensive model is developed to represent such a trend and improve agreement with experimental data presented in literature. Comparison of predicted results with the experimental data from the literature confirms the validity of the present model for the dense …
Bubble Distribution In Cylindrical Fluidized Beds: The Effects Of Bed Depth And Gas Speed, Anthony Croxford, Mark A. Gilbertson
Bubble Distribution In Cylindrical Fluidized Beds: The Effects Of Bed Depth And Gas Speed, Anthony Croxford, Mark A. Gilbertson
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The dynamic behaviour of a bubbling fluidised bed markedly changes when the bed is run close to Umf or when it is shallow. It is shown that these changes can be explained using the kinematic models of Clift and Grace (1,2) and Davidson (3) (the model implementation is described in detail by Croxford (11)). The use of this model and tomographic measurements allows the conclusions to be made for three-dimensional fluidised beds, which can be difficult to observe directly.

Improved Li-Ion Battery Performance By Coating Cathode Nano-Particles Using Atomic Layer Deposition, Renske Beetstra, John Nijenhuis, Erik M. Kelder, J. Ruud Van Ommen
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The use of nanoparticles as a cathode in Li-ion batteries is very promising. However, many of the cathode materials that could be economically attractive suffer from degradation. Therefore, an objective is to stabilise the surface, in order to reduce the degradation. A setup was build to coat the nanoparticles by atomic layer deposition in a fluidised bed reactor. The first fluidisation results for the nanoparticles are presented in this paper.
Role Of Sound Vibration During Aeration Of Nano-Sized Powders, Paola Ammendola, Riccardo Chirone
Role Of Sound Vibration During Aeration Of Nano-Sized Powders, Paola Ammendola, Riccardo Chirone
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The behaviour of two different nano-sized powders, Al2O3 (40 nm) and SiO2 (15 nm), during aeration has been investigated in a laboratory scale fluidized bed. The fluidization quality of both powders is very poor without application of acoustic fields even if some bed expansion has been found. The application of acoustic fields of intensities larger than 135 dB and frequencies close to 120 Hz is able to increase the fluidization quality of both powders. Sound is also able to promote an apparent self-fluidization of a relatively thin portion of the upper part of the bed. The possibility that there is …

Evaluation Of Assisted Fluidization Of Nanoagglomerates By Monitoring Moisture In The Gas Phase And The Influence Of Gas Viscosity, Jose Quevedo, Daniel Lepek, Robert Pfeffer, Rajesh N. Dave
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
We have previously reported that the fluidization of nanoparticle agglomerates can be enhanced by the addition of external force fields such as vibration, acoustic waves, centrifugal force, and magnetic particles. The criteria usually used to evaluate the enhancement in fluidization quality are the fluidized bed expansion, pressure drop, and visual appearance of the fluidized bed to determine the presence of bubbles, large heavy agglomerates and/or channeling and spouting. Here we introduce a different approach based on measuring the rate of absorption/desorption of moisture (humidification/drying) of hydrophilic fluidized nanopowders. The fluidizing gas was humidified in a controlled manner, and the amount …

The Effect Of Vibrations On Fluidized Cohesive Powders, Diego Barletta, Giorgio Donsì, Giovanna Ferrari, Massimo Poletto, Paola Russo
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The fluidization of a cohesive silica powder has been tested with the help of mechanical vibration. The experiments showed how the effectiveness of vibrations changed with the vibrational acceleration and frequency. The aggregative behavior of powders has been highlighted and a model procedure is proposed to predict the aggregate size starting from the measurement of powder flow properties with conventional shear testers.

Vibro-Fluidization Characteristics For Size Arranged Agglomerates, Yoshihide Mawatari, Yuji Tatemoto, Katsuji Noda, Masato Yamamura, Hiroyuki Kage
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
Fine cohesive powders (Geldart’s group-C) were fluidized with a vibro-fluidized bed. Diameters of the powder used in this study were 0.2μm. For 0.2μm titanium oxide powder, stable and relatively large agglomerates were observed. In this study, the size distribution of agglomerates was arranged by sieving to examine its effect on the fluidization characteristics, such as the minimum fluidization velocity, the minimum bubbling velocity and the bed expansion ratio. The fluidization characteristics were drastically influenced by the size distribution of agglomerates. It was found that the size arrangement of agglomerates was one of the factors to obtain stable fluidization state for …

An Investigation Of Carbon Nanotube Jet Grinding, Cedric Briens, Carole E. Baddour, Serge Bordere, Patrice Gaillard, Didier Anglerot
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The main challenges for the development of an industrial process for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) synthesis are the formation of agglomerates and the control of their size distribution. The project objective was to investigate the feasibility of CNT grinding with two arrangements. Experiments showed that a commercial jet mill can meet product quality requirements. However, in-situ grinding of CNTs, within the fluidized bed reactor, would improve both the productivity and quality of CNTs. A new, two-parameter grinding model shows that the primary grinding mechanism is fragmentation for the jet mill and erosion in the fluidized bed column.

Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes Obtained By Fluidized Bed Pyrolysis Of Virgin Or Recycled Plastics, Umberto Arena, Maria Laura Mastellone
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
A new technique for a continuous, mass production of high-quality multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), based on fluidized bed pyrolysis of polymers (virgin or recycled polyolefins and recycled polyethylene terephtalate), is described in detail. The study investigates the role of interactions between the bed material and the polymer particles injected into the reactor as well as that of the reactor temperature. Results are reported in terms of yield and quality of obtained MWCNTs, all characterized by thermogravimetrical analysis and SEM microscopy. The production of MWCNTs, in a relatively large quantity and at a low cost, is demonstrated as technically feasible.

The Effects Of Thermally Induced Interparticle Forces On The Expansion And Bubbling Behaviour Of A Fluidized Bed, Rossella Girimonte, Bruno Formisani
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
The paper addresses the transition to the bubbling regime of solid beds belonging to Geldart’s group A, from ambient temperature to 500°C. The analysis of the influence exerted by operating temperature on the variables that characterize both the homogeneous expansion of the bed and the onset of a steady bubbling regime is conducted on the fluidization map of the fluidized bed, namely the voidage velocity diagram into which results of the fluidization and bed collapse experiments are merged. The results obtained show that at elevated temperatures the ability of the fluidized bed to preserve the homogeneous fluidization regime is extended …

Modeling Mercury Capture By Powdered Activated Carbon In A Fluidized Bed Reactor, Fabrizio Scala, Riccardo Chirone, Amedeo Lancia
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
A steady state model of mercury capture on activated carbon in a bubbling fluidized bed of inert material is presented. The model takes into account the fluidized bed fluid-dynamics, the presence of both free and adhered carbon in the reactor as well as mass transfer limitations and mercury adsorption equilibrium. The activated carbon adsorption parameters and the relative amount of free versus adhered carbon in the reactor have been estimated with purposely designed experiments. Model results are compared with results from mercury capture experiments conducted with commercial powdered activated carbon at 100°C in a lab-scale pyrex fluidized bed of inert …

Study Of Methanol To Formaldehyde Reaction In Fluidized Bed Reactor, Jamshid Khorshidi, Mansour Kalbasi
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
Formaldehyde, as a valuable compound, has been widely used in chemical processes and is usually produced through the catalytic oxidization of methanol in a fixed bed reactor. In the present work, this reaction has been studied in a fluidized bed reactor. For this purpose, a stainless steel fluidized bed reactor , which has the capability of controlling the temperature and flow rate of the streams, has been employed. The effects of different operating variables on the performance of the above-mentioned reactor are studied. The results are compared with the two and three phase models.
