Load Transfer Issues In The Tensile And Compressive Behavior Of Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes, G. A. Shen, S. Namilae, Namas Chandra

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are considered to be ultra strong and stiff reinforcements for structural composite applications. The load transfer between the inner and outer nanotubes in multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) has to be clearly understood to realize their potential in not only composites, but also other applications such as nano-springs and nano-bearings. In this paper, we study the load transfer between the walls of multiwall nanotubes both in tension and compression using molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that very minimal load is transferred to the inner nanotube during tension. The load transfer in compression of capped nanotubes is much …

Methane Conversion In Pulsed Corona Discharge Reactors, Morris D. Argyle, Gui-Bing Zhao, Sanil John, Ji-Jun Zhang, Linna Wang, Suresh S. Muknahallipatna, Jerry C. Hamann, John F. Ackerman, Ovid A. Plumb

Faculty Publications

This work reports the effect of capacitance, cathode material, gas flow rate and specific energy input on methane conversion, energy efficiency and product selectivity in a co-axial cylinder pulsed corona discharge reactor. Ethan and acetylene appear to be formed from dimerization of CH3 radicals and CH radicals, respectively, while ethylene is formed mainly from the dehydrogenation of ethane. At a given power input, low capacitance with high pulse frequency results in higher methane conversion and energy efficiency than operation at high capacitance with low pulse frequency. Platinum coated stainless steel cathodes slightly enhance methane conversion relative to stainless steel cathodes, …

Adaptive Control Of Micro Air Vehicles, Joshua Stephen Matthews Aug 2006

Adaptive Control Of Micro Air Vehicles, Joshua Stephen Matthews

Theses and Dissertations

Although PID controllers work well on Miniature Air Vehicles (MAVs), they require tuning for each MAV. Also, they quickly lose performance in the presence of actuator failures or changes in the MAV dynamics. Adaptive control algorithms that self tune to each MAV and compensate for changes in the MAV during flight are explored. However, because the autopilots on MAVs are small, many of the adaptive control algorithms like those that employ least squares estimation may take too much code space, memory, and/or computing power. In this thesis we develop several Lyapunov-based model reference adaptive control (MRAC) schemes that are both …

Improved State Estimation For Miniature Air Vehicles, Andrew Mark Eldredge Aug 2006

Improved State Estimation For Miniature Air Vehicles, Andrew Mark Eldredge

Theses and Dissertations

Research in Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV's) continues to push the limitations of size and weight. As technical advances have made UAV's smaller and less expensive, they have become more flexible and extensive in their roles. To continue using smaller and less expensive components while retaining and even enhancing performance requires more sophisticated processing of sensor data in order for the UAV to accurately determine its state and thereby allow the use of feedback in controlling the aircraft automatically. This work presents a three-stage state-estimation scheme for the class of UAV's know as Miniature Air Vehicles (MAV's). The first stage estimates …

Mansfield Ct: Planning A New Village Center, Maggie Jones, Richard Barringer

Planning

The case follows the development of a plan for a new village center in Storrs, the central village of Mansfield, Connecticut. A process that was transparent and inclusive of the community members yielded a plan that gained the approval of the Town, the landowner (the University of Connecticut), and the citizenry. The process relied on the mending of fences, the leadership of key participants, and an innovative strategy that included development of a nonprofit corporation and creative use of grant money. While zoning changes are still in the works, the first stage of building goes forward.

Planning

Construction of a new Third Bridge over the Kennebec River in Augusta offered the prospect of a new and handsome gateway to the city. Further, the resulting change in traffic patterns offered the City the chance to plan for a pattern of development quite different from what the city had experienced for the past half-century. The case study describes the planning and construction of the new bridge and corridors that re-routed traffic out of Augusta’s downtown and older neighborhoods, and created the opportunity for planned development adjacent to the corridor created by the new bridge. It goes on to describe …

Investigation Of Negative Refractive Index In Reciprocal Chiral Materials, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Partha P. Banerjee, Pradeep R. Anugula Aug 2006

Investigation Of Negative Refractive Index In Reciprocal Chiral Materials, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Partha P. Banerjee, Pradeep R. Anugula

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

It is well known that there exist both natural materials (such as milk or sugar solution) possessing chiral (or handed) properties, as well as an increasing list of man-made materials (such as sodium bromate) that exhibit chirality. One of the principal properties of chirality is that light of any arbitrary polarization, when propagating through a chiral material, splits up into two circular polarizations propagating in different directions. In the past decade or longer, researchers have investigated electromagnetic transverse (plane) wave propagation across a non-chiral/chiral interface, and determined the electromagnetic Fresnel coefficients for such propagation. Traditionally, such coefficients are derived under …

How Much Energy Are We Using? Potential Of Residential Energy Demand Feedback Devices, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Past studies of providing instantaneous feedback on household electrical demand show promise to reduce energy consumption by 10-15%. This paper surveys past research and describes a pilot evaluation of two low cost monitoring systems in case study homes. We also develop an evaluation protocol to use such devices to determine the relative energy intensity of various energy end uses. An identified advantage of the technology is that it provides better guidance on profitable areas to reduce household electrical demand-many of which are often unexpected. Moreover, our case studies showed that use of targeted power strips and occupancy-based controls can significantly …

Canica: An Ide For The Java Modeling Language, Angelica B. Perez, Yoonsik Cheon, Ann Q. Gates

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Canica is an integrated development environment for the Java Modeling Language (JML), a formal behavioral interface specification language for Java. The JML distribution includes several support tools, such as a syntax checker, a compiler, and a document generator, and there are several third-party tools available for JML. However, most of these tools are command-line-based and work in isolation. Canica glues and streamlines these tools to provide a GUI-based, integrated environment for JML; for example, it automates unit testing completely from test data generation to test execution and test result determination. In this paper, we describe the key features of Canica …

A Model-Based Workflow Approach For Scientific Applications, Leonardo Salayandia, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva, Ann Q. Gates, Alvaro Rebellon

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Productive design of scientific workflows often depends on the effectiveness of the communication between the discipline domain experts and computer scientists, including their ability to share their specific needs in the design of the workflow. Discipline domain experts and computer scientists, however, tend to have distinct needs for designing workflows including terminology, level of abstraction, workflow aspects that should be included in the design. This paper discusses the use of a Model-Based Workflow (MBW) approach as an abstract way to specify workflows that conciliate the needs of domain and computer scientists. Within the context of GEON, an NSF cyberinfrastructure for …

Cpt-Based Probabilistic And Deterministic Assessment Of In Situ Seismic Soil Liquefaction Potential, Robb E.S. Moss, Raymond B. Seed, Robert E. Kayen, Jonathan P. Stewart, Armen Der Kiureghian, K. Onder Cetin Aug 2006

Cpt-Based Probabilistic And Deterministic Assessment Of In Situ Seismic Soil Liquefaction Potential, Robb E.S. Moss, Raymond B. Seed, Robert E. Kayen, Jonathan P. Stewart, Armen Der Kiureghian, K. Onder Cetin

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This paper presents a complete methodology for both probabilistic and deterministic assessment of seismic soil liquefaction triggering potential based on the cone penetration test (CPT). A comprehensive worldwide set of CPT-based liquefaction field case histories were compiled and back analyzed, and the data then used to develop probabilistic triggering correlations. Issues investigated in this study include improved normalization of CPT resistance measurements for the influence of effective overburden stress, and adjustment to CPT tip resistance for the potential influence of "thin" liquefiable layers. The effects of soil type and soil character (i.e., "fines" adjustment) for the new correlations are based …

Structural Matching Via Optimal Basis Graphs, Fred W. Depiero Aug 2006

Structural Matching Via Optimal Basis Graphs, Fred W. Depiero

Electrical Engineering

The ‘basis graph’ approach to structural matching uses a fixed set of small (4 node) graphs to characterize local structure. We compute mapping probabilities by first finding the probability of a basis graph being an induced subgraph of the input graph. The similarity of these probabilities is used to compare nodes of the input graphs. The method permits common subgraphs to be identified without the use of any node or edge coloring. We report on an improved, simpler, version of the algorithm, which has also been optimized. Performance is compared with the LeRP method, which is based on length-r paths. …

Stochastic Adaptive Control Model For Traffic Signal Systems, Xiao-Hua Yu, W. W. Recker Aug 2006

Stochastic Adaptive Control Model For Traffic Signal Systems, Xiao-Hua Yu, W. W. Recker

Electrical Engineering

An adaptive control model of a network of signalized intersections is proposed based on a discrete-time, stationary, Markov decision process. The model incorporates probabilistic forecasts of individual vehicle actuations at downstream inductance loop detectors that are derived from a macroscopic link transfer function. The model is tested both on a typical isolated traffic intersection and a simple network comprised of five four-legged signalized intersections, and compared to full-actuated control. Analyses of simulation results using this approach show significant improvement over traditional full-actuated control, especially for the case of high volume, but not saturated, traffic demand.

Automatic Biasing Of A Power Device For Linear Operation, Vladimir I. Prodanov Aug 2006

Automatic Biasing Of A Power Device For Linear Operation, Vladimir I. Prodanov

Electrical Engineering

A power device(s) is biased and operates in Class-AB. Crossover distortion is minimized over a broad range of operating conditions, not only for a nominal case. The bias current of a power transistor is automatically adjusted in response to process and temperature variations. Preferably, the adjustment is performed using an error-feedback arrangement. An exemplary ‘rule’ for bias adjustment involves satisfying a proportionality relationship between the small-signal device transconductance at the operating point, and a maximum device transconductance. A dual replica master-slave control architecture is utilized. A self-adapting circuit is provided to change the bias current (or voltage) so that the …

Workflow-Driven Ontologies: An Earth Sciences Case Study, Leonardo Salayandia, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva, Ann Q. Gates, Flor Salcedo

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

A goal of the Geosciences Network (GEON) is to develop cyber-infrastructure that will allow earth scientists to discover access, integrate and disseminate knowledge in distributed environments such as the Web, changing the way in which research is conducted. The earth sciences community has begun the complex task of creating ontologies to support this effort. A challenge is to coalesce the needs of the earth scientists, who wish to capture knowledge in a particular discipline through the ontology, with the need to leverage the knowledge to support technology that will facilitate computation, for example, by helping the composition of services. This …
