Study On Composite Organic Inhibitor Of Zinc Electrode In Alkaline Solutions, Xue-Tao Bu, Guang-Chuan Liang, Cui Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
The synergetic influence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) with Tween-20(Tween) on zinc electrode was studied by polarization experiment, surface tension test, discharge test and SEM.It is found that the composite inhibitor ST has a much higher efficiency. The addition of Tween reduced the critical micell concentration of SDBS on zinc electrode remarkably and the distribution of adsorption became more homogeneous.ST inhibits corrosion of zinc electrode and improves discharge capacity of the whole battery.Through electrochemical morphological observation of anodic passivation behaviors of zinc electrode, the absorption of ST on electrode surface makes discharged production much smaller and keeps crude porous structure intact.Passivation of zinc electrode …

Electrochemical Behavior And Reduction Mechanism Of High Valence Silver Oxide Ag3O4 In Alkaline Solution, Yan Cheng, Ming Yu, Man-Ming Yan, Zhi-Yu Jiang
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electrochemical properties of high-valence silver oxide Ag3O4 in alkaline solution were investigated for the first time and the reduction mechanism of Ag3O4 was proposed. It can be recognized that Ag3O4 consists of Ag(Ⅲ) and Ag(Ⅱ)~(*). From the results of voltammetry and XRD experiments it was found that the reduction process of Ag3O4 was more complicated. It could be electrochemically reduced through the series reactions of Ag(Ⅲ) →Ag(Ⅱ) →Ag(Ⅰ) →Ag(O) at low discharge rate or Ag(Ⅲ) →Ag(Ⅰ) →Ag(O) at higher discharge rate. And the Ag(Ⅱ)~(*) could be reduced to …

Efficient, Thermally Stable, Second Order Nonlinear Optical Response In Organic Hybrid Covalent/Ionic Self-Assembled Films, Kevin E. Van Cott
Papers in Biomolecular Engineering
A covalent/electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly method was used to achieve polar ordering of a water soluble, reactive dye in the fabrication of nonlinear optical (NLO) films. We observed a quadratic relationship between the second harmonic intensity I2 and bilayer number for all films made with Procion Brown MX-GRN, demonstrating that the polar ordering of the chromophores is consistent in each successive bilayer. As the ionic strength of the dye deposition solution was increased to 0.5 M NaCl, the of the films increased by approximately 250% to 50 × 10-9 esu, with a corresponding average chromophore tilt angle of 38. This was …

Preliminary Results For A Monocular Marker-Free Gait Measurement System, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor
Articles
This paper presents results from a novel monocular marker-free gait measurement system. The system was designed for physical and occupational therapists to monitor the progress of patients through therapy. It is based on a novel human motion capture method derived from model-based tracking. Testing is performed on two monocular, sagittal-view, sample gait videos – one with both the environment and the subject’s appearance and movement restricted and one in a natural environment with unrestricted clothing and motion. Results of the modelling, tracking and analysis stages are presented along with standard gait graphs and parameters.

Using Genetic Algorithms And Particle Swarm Optimization For Optimal Design And Calibration Of Large And Complex Urban Stormwater Management Models, Misgana K. Muleta, Paul F. Boulos, Chun-Hou Orr, Jun Je Ro
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Computer models are vital for the evaluation and management of urban drainage systems. Usefulness of these models, however, depends on how well they are calibrated. Properly calibrated models can be used to conceive, evaluate and compare various design improvement alternatives. Unfortunately, calibration and design of urban stormwater models, especially with the commonly used trial-and-error approach, are an expensive, time-consuming process and normally represent the most painful step of a modeling exercise. Their success depends mainly on the engineering expertise of the modeler and budget availability. The effort is complicated by the fact that these models normally necessitate the evaluation of …

The structure of the type I tetraheme cytochrome c3 from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans G20 was determined to 1.5 A˚ by X-ray crystallography. In addition to the oxidized form, the structure of the molybdate-bound form of the protein was determined from oxidized crystals soaked in sodium molybdate. Only small structural shifts were obtained with metal binding, consistent with the remarkable structural stability of this protein. In vitro experiments with pure cytochrome showed that molybdate could oxidize the reduced cytochrome, although not as rapidly as U(VI) present as uranyl acetate. Alterations in the overall conformation and thermostability of the metal-oxidized protein were investigated …

Inorganic Sorption In Polymer Modified Bentonite Clays, Melody Schwartz Nocon
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In 1986, geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) were invented and successfully used as a replacement for the soil layer in composite lining systems. In some applications an additive (polymer) is mixed with the bentonite to increase performance, especially in those that have low concentrations of sodium bentonite (EPA 2001).Studies showing significant increases in hydraulic conductivity values for bentonite in the presence of high salt concentrations are frequently documented and there is a risk of early breakthrough due to performance failure of the GCL clay component. (Ashmawy et al, 2002). It has also been stated that sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium have …

Image Fusion For Improved Perception, Michel Ouendeno, Samuel Peter Kozaitis
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
We developed a method to fuse imagery for from different sensor types. The core of our method uses different forward transforms of input images and a common transform to reconstruct the final result. When measuring the entropy and power of the fused result, we found that our method gave generally better results when compared to a more conventional approach. Our method could form the basis of a new image fusion approach because it offers results not possible with a conventional approach.
