Modular Neural Network To Predict The Distribution Of Nitrate In Ground Water Using On-Ground Nitrogen Loading And Recharge Data, M. Almasri, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Artificial neural networks have proven to be an attractive mathematical tool to represent complex relationships in many branches of hydrology. Due to this attractive feature, neural networks are increasingly being applied in subsurface modeling where intricate physical processes and lack of detailed field data prevail. In this paper, a methodology using modular neural networks (MNN) is proposed to simulate the nitrate concentrations in an agriculture-dominated aquifer. The methodology relies on geographic information system (GIS) tools in the preparation and processing of the MNN input–output data. The basic premise followed in developing the MNN input–output response patterns is to designate the …

As a result of a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study of the Spokane River in Washington, a hydrodynamic and water quality model for the Spokane River was developed by Portland State University (PSU) for the Corps of Engineers and the Washington Department of Ecology from the Washington-Idaho state line to the outlet of Long Lake.

An earlier study of the Spokane River was undertaken by Limno-Tech (2001a, 2001b) for the domain shown in Figure 3. Limno-Tech used an earlier version of CE-QUAL-W2, Version 2, for the Reservoir portion of the Spokane River from Post Falls Dam to Coeur d’Alene …

Investigation Of The Superconducting Properties Of Niobium Radio-Frequency Cavities, Gianluigi Ciovati Jul 2005

Investigation Of The Superconducting Properties Of Niobium Radio-Frequency Cavities, Gianluigi Ciovati

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Radio-frequency (rf) superconducting cavities are widely used to increase the energy of a charged particle beam in particle accelerators. The maximum gradients of cavities made of bulk niobium have constantly improved over the last ten years and they are approaching the theoretical limit of the material. Nevertheless, rf tests of niobium cavities are still showing some "anomalous" losses (so-called "Q-drop"), characterized by a marked increase of the surface resistance at high rf fields, in absence of field emission. A low temperature "in-situ" baking under ultra-high vacuum has been successfully applied by several laboratories to reduce those losses and …

Exploiting Belief Bounds: Practical Pomdps For Personal Assistant Agents, Pradeep Varakantham, Rajiv Maheswaran, Milind Tambe

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Agents or agent teams deployed to assist humans often face the challenges of monitoring the state of key processes in their environment (including the state of their human users themselves) and making periodic decisions based on such monitoring. POMDPs appear well suited to enable agents to address these challenges, given the uncertain environment and cost of actions, but optimal policy generation for POMDPs is computationally expensive. This paper introduces three key techniques to speedup POMDP policy generation that exploit the notion of progress or dynamics in personal assistant domains. Policy computation is restricted to the belief space polytope that remains …

Computational Sensing And Closed-Loop Active Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions, Volkan Kamaci Jul 2005

Computational Sensing And Closed-Loop Active Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions, Volkan Kamaci

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Flow separation over lifting aerodynamic components, such as airfoils and wings, occurs during stall conditions which are caused by adverse changes (i.e. high angle of attack, inflow conditions, etc.) in the operating conditions of aerodynamic components. During stall conditions, the flow over airfoil loses its momentum, creating high pressure zones on the upper surface of the airfoil and even a small increase in pressure causes the fluid particles to stop and separate to a low pressure zone. In order to eliminate the flow separation, the low momentum flow should be removed in order to maintain the high momentum and low …

A Feature Specific Modular Approach For Pose And Illumination Invariant Face Recognition, Praveen Sankaran Jul 2005

A Feature Specific Modular Approach For Pose And Illumination Invariant Face Recognition, Praveen Sankaran

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A feature specific modular-PCA (Principal Component Analysis) approach on face images in multiple views for pose and illumination invariant face recognition is presented in this thesis. Principal components are extracted from different sub-modules of the image and are concatenated to make a single signature vector to represent a face region in a particular viewing angle. Additional principal components are extracted horn image regions representing key facial feature and are added as an extension of the signature vector. Feature specific modular-PCA approach is capable of recognizing faces in varying illumination conditions and facial expressions as the modular components represent the local …

Strategies For Analysis Of Unimodal And Multimodal Data For Simulation, Anshul Rai Sharma Jul 2005

Strategies For Analysis Of Unimodal And Multimodal Data For Simulation, Anshul Rai Sharma

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The primary objective of this thesis is to provide strategies for analysis for data associated with simulation. Data analysis is an important part of the simulation process. Typically more stress is laid upon the development of the computer simulation while the data analysis takes a back seat. However, the accuracy of a simulation depends on the data driving it. In other words, any simulation is only as accurate as the input data fed into the simulation. Also, the output of simulation should be analyzed properly in order to validly estimate the performance of the system being simulated. The focus of …

A Multiplier-Less Architecture For High Speed Computation Of Multi-Dimensional Convolution, Ming Zhu Zhang Jul 2005

A Multiplier-Less Architecture For High Speed Computation Of Multi-Dimensional Convolution, Ming Zhu Zhang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

One of the most computationally intensive operations in digital image/video processing systems is multi-dimensional convolution. Every image/video processor needs the convolution module in its pre-processing stage. Fast and efficient design of the convolution module in an application specific system is a great challenge in VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) design. Convolution operator requires a large set of multipliers and accumulators. A high precision multiplier takes enormous amount of VLSI area and it consumes more power. Hence reduction of the number of multipliers is another important challenge in VLSI design. A multiplier-less architecture for the design of a multi-dimensional convolution module …

Opal: In Vivo Based Preservation Framework For Locating Lost Web Pages, Terry L. Harrison Jul 2005

Opal: In Vivo Based Preservation Framework For Locating Lost Web Pages, Terry L. Harrison

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

We present Opal, a framework for interactively locating missing web pages (http status code 404). Opal is an example of "in vivo" preservation: harnessing the collective behavior of web archives, commercial search engines, and research projects for the purpose of preservation. Opal servers learn from their experiences and are able to share their knowledge with other Opal servers using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Using cached copies that can be found on the web, Opal creates lexical signatures which are then used to search for similar versions of the web page. Using the OAI-PMH to facilitate …

Time-Domain Isolated Phoneme Classification Using Reconstructed Phase Spaces, Michael T. Johnson, Richard J. Povinelli, Andrew C. Lindgren, Jinjin Ye, Xiaolin Liu, Kevin M Indrebo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper introduces a novel time-domain approach to modeling and classifying speech phoneme waveforms. The approach is based on statistical models of reconstructed phase spaces, which offer significant theoretical benefits as representations that are known to be topologically equivalent to the state dynamics of the underlying production system. The lag and dimension parameters of the reconstruction process for speech are examined in detail, comparing common estimation heuristics for these parameters with corresponding maximum likelihood recognition accuracy over the TIMIT data set. Overall accuracies are compared with a Mel-frequency cepstral baseline system across five different phonetic classes within TIMIT, and a …

Active Control Of Large Amplitude Nonlinear Free Vibrations And Nonlinear Supersonic Panel Flutter Of Beams And Composite Plates Using Piezoelectric Self-Sensing Actuators, Qinqin Li

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis employs a coupled structural-electrical finite element modal formulation for the control of nonlinear free vibrations, and supersonic panel flutter of beams and composite plates with and without thermal environment. Multiple modes of the nonlinear free vibration and supersonic panel flutter are considered in the closed loop simulations. Two different controllers are designed and investigated. The first one is the output feedback controller comprised of a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). EKF considers the nonlinear state space matrix and has a gain sequence evaluated on-line. Thus the LQR/EKF nonlinear controller has more accurate state …

Ceramic Properties Of Chimala Kaolin Clay, Leonard Akwilapo

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

The physico-chemical properties of kaolinite clays occurring in abundance near Chimala were studied with a view of finding out their suitability in sanitary ware production. The viscosity of the clay was found to be within the range acceptable in industrial application (≤ 500 cp for 70% solids), enhancing its prospects for the manufacture of slip cast shapes with satisfactory properties. The chemical composition of the clay reveals a high content of Fe₂O₃, 1.48%, which is expected to affect the translucency and colour of the finished ware. However, such quantity would not have detrimental effects in the production of sanitary ware. …

Attribution Standardization For Integrated Concurrent Engineering, Tyson J. Baker Jun 2005

Attribution Standardization For Integrated Concurrent Engineering, Tyson J. Baker

Theses and Dissertations

Product design is a creative process, often subject to rapid and numerous design change requirements. To facilitate geometric redesign iterations, Parametric Computer-Aided Design CAD) systems were introduced. To manage the numerous product design iterations produced by parametric CAD systems, Product Data Management (PDM) systems were developed to capture, document, and manage each product revision. PDM has proved effective thus far at managing design history. However, PDM is built upon database management systems (DBMS), which have the capability of doing far more than simply managing product revision history. Product data consists not only of the physical geometry used to describe it, …

This paper presents experimental results of investigations done on the use of stabilized earth (soil) for the manufacture of bricks and blocks. The soil used was clayey sand of low plasticity. Two types of stabilizers were used to make stabilized bricks and these were cement and a combination of cement and lime. Different stabilizer proportions were employed. Results of tests carried on these bricks at 28 days indicate an optimum mix proportion of 7% cement if cement is used alone and an optimum mix proportion of 5% each if a combination of lime and cement is used as a stabilizer. …

An Analysis Of Microstructure And Corrosion Resistance In Underwater Friction Stir Welded 304l Stainless Steel, Tad Dee Clark Jun 2005

An Analysis Of Microstructure And Corrosion Resistance In Underwater Friction Stir Welded 304l Stainless Steel, Tad Dee Clark

Theses and Dissertations

An effective procedure and parameter window was developed for underwater friction stir welding (UWFSW) 304L stainless steel with a PCBN tool. UWFSW produced statistically significant: increases in yield strengths, decreases in percent elongation. The ultimate tensile strength was found to be significantly higher at certain parameters. Although sigma was identified in the UWFSWs, a significant reduction of sigma was found in UWFSWs compared to ambient FSWs. The degree of sensitization in UWFSWs was evaluated using double loop EPR testing and oxalic acid electro-etched metallography. Results were compared to base metal, ambient FSW, and arc welds. Upper and lower sensitization localization …

Cement Oonded Wood Wool Board As A Building Material For Low Cost Housing, A Mrema Jun 2005

Cement Oonded Wood Wool Board As A Building Material For Low Cost Housing, A Mrema

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

This paper gives results of a preliminary study on the properties of cement bonded wood-wool boards manufactured as composites by using wood-wool (excelsior) from podocarpus spp wood species and ordinary Portland cement. Two main parameters were varied during the investigation and these were the width of the wood-wool and the cement to wood-wool ratio. Results show that the optimum mix proportion is three parts of cement to two parts of wood-wool by weight and that a smaller excelsior width gives higher board strengths. The results from tests on flexural strength, compressive strength and tensile strength far exceeded the requirements of …

Low Cost Slab Manufactured From Masonry Slab Elements, John Makunza Jun 2005

Low Cost Slab Manufactured From Masonry Slab Elements, John Makunza

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

The construction of bungalow houses requires sufficient space to accommodate all the requirements as per the client’s wish. The idea of low-rise or high rise buildings is very remote for most of the people due to the high costs of construction involved. Much of the said cost is due to the concrete floor slab as it consumes a bigger portion of concrete material when compared to beams and columns. In this paper, a study presented is on a new form of voided slab constructed from masonry slab elements that do not utilize formwork and consumes less concrete material. The slab …

A Pam Decomposition Of Weak Cpm, Mason B. Wardle Jun 2005

A Pam Decomposition Of Weak Cpm, Mason B. Wardle

Theses and Dissertations

The Enhanced Flight Termination System uses weak CPM as its modulation scheme and a limiter-discriminator as its demodulation scheme. A PAM representation of weak CPM was developed which representation provided the necessary componenents to build a simplified PAM-based receiver that outperformed the EFTS limiter-discriminator, even in the presence of phase noise. The PAM representation also provided a new perspective into the negative characteristics of weak CPM.

Giant Electroresistance In Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions, Mikhail Ye Zhuravlev, Renat F. Sabirianov, Sitaram Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal Jun 2005

Giant Electroresistance In Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions, Mikhail Ye Zhuravlev, Renat F. Sabirianov, Sitaram Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

The interplay between the electron transport in metal-ferroelectric-metal junctions with ultrathin ferroelectric barriers and the polarization state of a barrier is investigated. Using a model which takes into account screening of polarization charges in metallic electrodes and direct quantum tunneling across a ferroelectric barrier, we calculate the change in the tunneling conductance associated with the polarization switching. We find the conductance change of a few orders of magnitude for metallic electrodes with significantly different screening lengths. This giant electroresistance effect is the consequence of a different potential profile seen by transport electrons for the two opposite polarization orientations.

Correlation Of Fault-Injection To Proton Accelerator Persistent Cross Section Measurements, Keith S. Morgan, Michael J. Wirthlin Jun 2005

Correlation Of Fault-Injection To Proton Accelerator Persistent Cross Section Measurements, Keith S. Morgan, Michael J. Wirthlin

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: Los Alamos National Laboratory. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are an attractive solution for space system electronics. Unfortunately, FPGAs are susceptible to radiation-induced single-event upsets (SEU). As such, the FPGA Reliability Studies research group (http://reliability.ee.byu.edu) at Brigham Young University has studied ways to effectively measure the static, dynamic and persistent cross sections of an FPGA desgin; each of which are characterized in some way by how the part reacts to an SEU. One such method is to actually radiate an FPGA and monitor how it reacts to SEUs. A cheaper, more efficient solution is to use fault-injection to emulate …

Development Of A User Cost Estimation Procedure For Work Zones., Michael Roy Adams Jun 2005

Development Of A User Cost Estimation Procedure For Work Zones., Michael Roy Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Work zones associated with highway construction projects create localized bottlenecks where the average traffic speed is reduced and queues are formed, thus causing increased costs as a result of the additional time and fuel needed to traverse the work zone. These user costs can be estimated and applied as a form of incentive to the contractor to complete the work sooner, thus allowing traffic to return to the free-flow speed. Methods to determine user costs are explored through a literature search, questionnaire survey, and interviews with employees of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). Based on the research and interviews, …

Effective Electromechanical Moduli Of Ferroelectric Ceramics With Fiber Textures, Y.C. Zhou, J. Liu, Jiangyu Li Jun 2005

Effective Electromechanical Moduli Of Ferroelectric Ceramics With Fiber Textures, Y.C. Zhou, J. Liu, Jiangyu Li

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

In this letter, we report the predictions on the effective piezoelectric coefficients and electromechanical coupling factors of ferroelectric ceramics BaTiO 3 and Pb(Mg 1/3Nb 2/3)O 3–PbTiO 3 (PMN-PT) with various fiber textures, including [001], [011], and [111], using a two-scale micromechanical model that accounts for microstructural phenomena at both domain and grain levels. It was observed that for BaTiO 3 the [011] texture is optimal with highest d 31 and d 33, while for PMN-PT [001] texture is optimal despite the fact that [011]-oriented single-crystalline PMN-PT has higher d 32 than that of [001]-oriented PMN-PT single …
