Existing maximum flow algorithms use one processor for all calculations or one processor per vertex in a graph to calculate the maximum possible flow through a graph's vertices. This is not suitable for practical implementation. We extend the max-flow work of Goldberg and Tarjan to a distributed algorithm to calculate maximum flow where the number of processors is less than the number of vertices in a graph. Our algorithm is applied to maximizing electrical flow within a power network where the power grid is modeled as a graph. Error detection measures are included to detect problems in a simulated power …
Modeling And Simulation Of \Sub-Microsecond Electrical Breakdown In Liquids With Application To Water, Jun Qian
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, the inherent physics and sub-microsecond electrical breakdown of water stressed to high voltages is analyzed, and several relevant models are constructed for quantitative analysis. A bubble-based, drift-diffusion (DD) model proposed here includes almost all the important physical process of the system, and successfully explains many important features routinely observed in sub-microsecond water electrical breakdown. Here many physical properties and response characteristics typical for high-field stressing of liquid water have been analyzed through numerical calculations. The internal temperature profile in the water system has been calculated by Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method to probe possible heating and …
Electromagnetic Propagation Prediction Inside Aircraft Cabins, Genevieve Hankins
Electromagnetic Propagation Prediction Inside Aircraft Cabins, Genevieve Hankins
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Electromagnetic propagation models for signal strength prediction within aircraft cabins are essential for evaluating and designing a wireless communication system to be implemented onboard aircraft. There are many commercially available software packages for predicting wireless system performance in conventional indoor environments. It is of interest to examine the available software to determine if the aircraft's electromagnetic environment (EME) can be modeled successfully without developing an aircraft specific prediction tool. EnterprisePlanner ®, a registered product of Wireless Valley Communications, Incorporated, was selected for the present effort. The performance of the prediction model was evaluated through a comparison with field measurements taken …
Dream: A Theoretical Analysis, Xueying Qi
Dream: A Theoretical Analysis, Xueying Qi
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
A Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET, for short) is a collection of mobile nodes deployed in support of a short-lived special-purpose operation. Examples include search-and-rescue missions, law-enforcement, multimedia classrooms, and among many others. Unlike cellular or satellite networks, MANET do not rely on any form of pre-existing infrastructure. The mobility of nodes combined with the lack of infrastructure makes routing in MANET notoriously difficult. It was recently suggested that routing in MANET can use to advantage geographic information that the nodes may acquire either by endowing them with a GPS chip or simply by using known localization algorithms. Distance Routing Effect …

Non-Linear And Linear Transformations Of Features For Robust Speech Recognition And Speaker Identification, Saurabh Prasad
Non-Linear And Linear Transformations Of Features For Robust Speech Recognition And Speaker Identification, Saurabh Prasad
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Automatic speech recognizers perform poorly when training and test data are systematically different in terms of noise and channel characteristics. One manifestation of such differences is variations in the probability density functions (pdfs) between training and test features. Consequently, both automatic speech recognition and automatic speaker identification may be severely degraded. Previous attempts to mm1m1ze this problem include Cepstral Mean and Variance Normalization and transforming all speech features to a uni-variate Gaussian pdf. In this thesis, two techniques are presented for non-linearly scaling speech features to fit them to a target pdf - the first is based on the principles …

Electromagnetic Wave Propagation Prediction For Wireless Networks Inside Boeing Fuselages, Mennatoallah Youssef
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Commercial grade software is intended for electromagnetic predictions within office buildings; it was used to develop models to analyze propagation inside airplane fuselages. This study shows that Wireless XGTD and Insite software can accurately predict power propagation within airplane fuselages. Current work uses fuselage models, which contain additional internal components. A comparison was made between empty and full fuselage to examine the effects of internal components. Two propagation model types [Fast 3D and Full 3D] were also compared for accuracy to experimental study. It was concluded that completed fuselages are suggested for further simulation study as well as that the …
Design And Fabrication Of A Prototype Fabry-Perot Cavity For The Compton Polarimeter Upgrade At Jefferson Lab, Deepa Deepa
Design And Fabrication Of A Prototype Fabry-Perot Cavity For The Compton Polarimeter Upgrade At Jefferson Lab, Deepa Deepa
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Upcoming experiments at Hall A at Jefferson lab require 1 % absolute accuracy of the electron beam polarization measurement at 0.85 Ge V energy. The Compton polarimeter at Hall A is capable of measuring beam polarization with 3 - 4 % accuracies at this beam energy. Hence it was proposed to upgrade the present Compton by doubling the laser frequency [2]. The present Compton polarimeter operates with a 1064 nm, continuous wave laser at 200 mW. This power is enhanced to 1.5 kW using a 0.85 m long Fabry-Perot Cavity. Changing to 532 nm laser with the same power would …
Fine-Tuning Of Mass-Spring Model Properties For Simulating Realistic Soft Body Deformation, Sylva A. Girtelschmid
Fine-Tuning Of Mass-Spring Model Properties For Simulating Realistic Soft Body Deformation, Sylva A. Girtelschmid
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Obtaining a well behaved soft-tissue model is one of the most challenging and important tasks in the development of surgical simulation systems. Achieving both accurate and real-time deformation response from a soft-tissue model becomes more difficult as the complexity of the represented anatomy and the degree of deformation increases. One common approach to modeling deformable objects is the Mass-Spring (MS) system method. Mass-Spring systems are attractive to real-time applications due to their relatively low computational requirement and ease of implementation. However, their parameter determination is typically done manually, which becomes tedious when accurate approximation to real-world objects is desired. This …
Monte Carlo Simulation Analysis Of Electron Bombardment Of Gallium Nitride For Particle Detector Applications, James Gibson Bolitho
Monte Carlo Simulation Analysis Of Electron Bombardment Of Gallium Nitride For Particle Detector Applications, James Gibson Bolitho
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Gallium Nitride (GaN) is a relatively new and promising semiconductor material. It is finding its place in commercial applications such as transistors, light-emitting diodes, and in blue lasers. The large bandgap of GaN allows for very low canier densities and high breakdown voltages. This combination results in a greatly reduced background current and noise, and can withstand large applied voltages. In addition, GaN is sturdy and has strong mechanical properties. These are all ideal characteristics for application in high-energy particle detection.
In this thesis, the central goal is to assess the response of a GaN-based particle detector through numerical modeling. …
The Impact Of State Road Fund Debt Limits: An Empirical Analysis, Michael Moody, Merl Hackbart
The Impact Of State Road Fund Debt Limits: An Empirical Analysis, Michael Moody, Merl Hackbart
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
States have been gradually increasing their reliance on debt financing to meet their transportation funding needs. Increased reliance on debt financing has been driven by the slow growth of highway and Road Fund revenue sources, resistance to tax expenditures, and restrictions placed on the use of General Fund revenue, in many states, for transportation projects. In light of states’ increasing reliance on debt financing for transportation, state officials and policy makers have shown greater interest debt management practices. One dominant practice across the states is the use of debt limitations. Debt limit policies vary widely from state to state. There …
The Case For Thoroughly Testing Complex System Dynamic Models, Wayne Wakeland, Megan Hoarfrost
The Case For Thoroughly Testing Complex System Dynamic Models, Wayne Wakeland, Megan Hoarfrost
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
In order to determine whether model testing is as useful as suggested by modeling experts, the full battery of model tests recommended by Forrester, Senge, Sterman, and others was applied retrospectively to a complex previously-published system dynamics model. The time required to carry out each type of test was captured, and the benefits that resulted from applying each test was determined subjectively. The resulting benefit to cost ratios are reported. These ratios suggest that rather than focusing primarily on sensitivity testing, modelers should consider other types of model tests such as extreme condition tests and family member tests. The study …

Phase-Field Modeling On Morphological Landscape Of Isotactic Polystyrene Single Crystals, Haijun Xu, Rushikesh Matkar, Thein Kyu
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
Spatio-temporal growth of isotactic polystyrene single crystals during isothermal crystallization has been investigated theoretically based on the phase field model by solving temporal evolution of a nonconserved phase order parameter coupled with a heat conduction equation. In the description of the total free energy, an asymmetric double-well local free energy density has been adopted to represent the metastable melt and the stable solid crystal. Unlike the small molecule systems, polymer crystallization rarely reaches thermodynamic equilibrium; most polymer crystals are kinetically stabilized in some metastable states. To capture various metastable polymer crystals, the phase field crystal order parameter at the solidification …
Electromagnetic Measurement Of Spinal Curvature, Ronan Fitzmaurice, Ted Burke, Annraoi De Paor
Electromagnetic Measurement Of Spinal Curvature, Ronan Fitzmaurice, Ted Burke, Annraoi De Paor
Conference Papers
In this paper, we describe an original mathematical technique for calculating the position and orientation of an electromagnetic coil from a minimum of four collinear magnetic field measurements. This problem arose in the development of a system for evaluating the efficacy of inflatable back rafts designed to mitigate complications that arise from the immobilisation of patients with suspected spinal injuries on spinal boards during transport to hospital. Electromagnetic markers are attached to points of interest on the back of an immobilised test subject. Spinal curvature is then measured by passing a magnetometer underneath the board.

Performance Evaluation Of Resource Usage For Unicast Video Streaming Over Ieee 802.11 Wlan Networks, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis
Conference papers
Multimedia streaming applications are a demanding and challenging service to deliver over wireless networks. Such services have a large impact on the resource requirements of the WLAN. However, there are many variables involved in video streaming, such as the video content being streamed, how the video is encoded and how it is sent. This makes the role of radio resource management and the provision of QoS guarantees extremely difficult. In this paper we investigate the network resource requirements for three scenarios: a single unicast video streaming session; multiple unicast video streaming sessions and finally multiple unicast streaming sessions in the …

An Assessment Of The Audio Codec Performance In Voice Over Wlan (Vowlan) Systems, Miroslaw Narbutt, Mark Davis
Conference papers
In this paper we present results of experimental investigation into the performance of three audio codecs (ITU-T G.711, G.723.1 and G.729A) under varying load conditions on a Voice over WLAN system utilizing the IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN standard. The analysis is based upon a new technique for estimating user satisfaction of speech quality calculated from packet delay and packet loss/late measurements. We also demonstrate the importance of the de-jitter buffer playout scheme for insuring speech quality. From our results we conclude that the use of the G.711 audio codec in conjunction with the new adaptive playout scheme gives the highest …

Innovative Rapid Construction/Reconstruction Methods, Paul M. Goodrum, Yinggang Wang, Chris N. Jones, Philippe C. Fenouil, Donn E. Hancher
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Innovative construction and reconstruction methods provide the opportunity to significantly reduce the time of roadway projects while maintaining the necessary quality of workmanship. The need for these “rapid” methods stems from the increase in traffic on Kentucky roadways coupled with the rise in conventional road and bridge construction methods. Conventional construction methods cannot maintain the demand for progress necessitated by the future needs of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, especially the current philosophy of “Get In, Get Out, and Stay Out.” This research documents a series of case studies that examined past projects which used innovative rapid construction methods. This document …

Many experiments on the mechanics of nanostructures require the creation of rigid clamps at specific locations. In this work, electron-beam-induced deposition(EBID) has been used to depositcarbonfilms that are similar to those that have recently been used for clamping nanostructures. The film deposition rate was accelerated by placing a paraffin source of hydrocarbon near the area where the EBIDdeposits were made. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron-energy-loss spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, secondary-ion-mass spectrometry, and nanoindentation were used to characterize the chemical composition and the mechanics of the carbonaceous deposits. The typical EBIDdeposit was found to be hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) having …

Comparison Of Hybrid Propulsion Drive Schemes, Keith Corzine, Shuai Lu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper provides a brief overview of a hybrid drives which have become popular in recent years. These drives combine two or more multilevel power inverters to obtain exceptional power quality which is necessary for Naval propulsion applications. Furthermore, for ship propulsion, where it may be difficult to obtain several isolated dc voltage sources, the inverter control can be set so that only one real dc power source is needed (or one per phase in the case of a series H-bridge type). Three types of hybrid drives considered and their advantages and limitations are described. Commonalities of the control of …

Locally Synchronous, Globally Asynchronous Design For Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata (Lsga Qca), Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The concept of clocking for QCA, referred to as the four-phase clocking, is widely used. However, inherited characteristics of QCA, such as the way to hold state, the way to synchronize data flows, and the way to power QCA cells, make the design of QCA circuits quite different from VLSI and introduce a variety of new design challenges and the most severe challenges are due to the fact that the overall timing of a QCA circuit is mainly dependent upon its layout. This fact is commonly referred to as the "layout-timing" problem. To circumvent the problem, a novel self-timed circuit …
