Experimental Measurements Of Longitudinal Load Distributions On Friction Stir Weld Pin Tools, Aaron L. Stahl
Experimental Measurements Of Longitudinal Load Distributions On Friction Stir Weld Pin Tools, Aaron L. Stahl
Theses and Dissertations
The longitudinal forces generated from the Friction Stir Welding process are substantial. An understanding of these forces is critical to proper tool design. This study describes a technique to measure the longitudinal force distribution on a friction stir weld pin tool. Total longitudinal forces were recorded on a dynamometer while welding 6061 aluminum with non-threaded pins that varied in length and diameter. A model was developed that characterizes pin force as a function of pin length and diameter. Results suggest that force generally increases with pin length, while forces remain relatively constant with pin diameter. Unexpected force variation was found …
Detection Of Microcracks During Bone Cutting Using Acoustic Emission Techniques, Ashkan Safari, Ger Reilly, Brendan Mccormack
Detection Of Microcracks During Bone Cutting Using Acoustic Emission Techniques, Ashkan Safari, Ger Reilly, Brendan Mccormack
Conference Papers
Surgeons may use a number of cutting instruments such as osteotomes and chisels to cut bone during operative procedures. The initial loading of cortical bone during the cutting process results in the formation of microcracks in the vicinity of the cutting zone with main crack propagation to failure occurring with continued loading; microcracking acts as a stimulus for main crack formation and has also been shown to occur during the propagation of the main crack. It has also been reported that Acoustic Emission (AE) is generated due to microcrack formation and crack growth, prior to, and during final fracture in …

Rupture Of A Two-Dimensional Alkane Crystal, Shishir Prasad, Ali Dhinojwala
Rupture Of A Two-Dimensional Alkane Crystal, Shishir Prasad, Ali Dhinojwala
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
We have studied the breaking of a two-dimensional alkane crystal above the disordered melt using an oscillating bubble rheometer. Surface tension changes abruptly during the expansion and contraction cycle. We postulate that this is due to rupture of the 2D crystal at grain boundaries. The magnitude of the abrupt change in surface tension decreases with a decrease in the rate of change of bubble surface area with a power law exponent of 0.8. The interfacial area formed after rupture decreases with a decrease in rate. These results provide new insights in understanding defect-mediated rupture in confined geometry.

All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The Open Network Laboratory (ONL) is a remotely accessible network testbed designed to enable network researchers to conduct experiments using high performance routers and applications. ONL™s Remote Laboratory Interface (RLI) allows users to easily configure a network topology, initialize and modify the routers™ routing tables, packet classification tables and queuing parameters. It also enables users to add software plugins to the embedded processors available at each of the routers™ ports, enabling the introduction of new functionality. The routers provide a large number of built-in counters to track various aspects of system usage, and the RLI software makes these available through …
The Effect Of Particles On Dynamic Recrystallization And Fabric Development Of Granular Ice During Creep, Min Song, Ian Baker, David M. Cole
The Effect Of Particles On Dynamic Recrystallization And Fabric Development Of Granular Ice During Creep, Min Song, Ian Baker, David M. Cole
Dartmouth Scholarship
The mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution of laboratory-prepared, particle-free fresh-water ice and ice with 1 wt.% (~0.43 vol.%) silt-sized particles were investigated under creep with a stress level of 1.45 MPa at −10°C. The particles were present both within the grains and along the grain boundaries. The creep rates of specimens with particles were always higher than those of particle-free ice. Dynamic recrystallization occurred for both sets of specimens, with new grains nucleating along grain boundaries in the early stages of creep. The ice with particles showed a higher nucleation rate. This resulted in a smaller average grain-size for the …
Modified Log–Wake Law For Zero-Pressure-Gradient Turbulent Boundary Layers, Junke Guo, Pierre Y. Julien, Meroney N. Meroney
Modified Log–Wake Law For Zero-Pressure-Gradient Turbulent Boundary Layers, Junke Guo, Pierre Y. Julien, Meroney N. Meroney
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
This paper shows that the turbulent velocity profile for zero-pressure-gradient boundary layers is affected by the wall shear stress and convective inertia. The effect of the wall shear stress is dominant in the so-called overlap region and can be described by a logarithmic law in which the von Karman constant is about 0.4 while the additive constant depends on a Reynolds number. The effect of the convective inertia can be described by the Coles wake law with a constant wake strength about 0.76.A cubic correction term is introduced to satisfy the zero velocity gradient requirement at the boundary layer edge. …

Optimization Of The Fuzzy Logic Controller For An Autonomous Uav, Jon C. Ervin, Sema E. Alptekin, Dianne J. Deturris
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
In this paper, we describe the optimization of membership functions in an application employing a hierarchical Fuzzy Logic Controller. The size of the rule base is made manageable by using a unique formulation, known as Combs method, to help control the problem of ‘exponential rule expansion’. The optimization is performed using a steady state genetic algorithm with a dynamic fitness function. The controller being developed is designed to fly a small, autonomous parafoil, suitable for short-range reconnaissance and land survey applications. The optimization process is performed in the Matlab/Simulink software environment and incorporates fuzzy logic modules developed in the Matlab …
