Establishing An Entertainment Engineering Curriculum, Robert F. Boehm, Joe Aldridge, Brackley Frayer

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

A new, multidisciplinary program in Entertainment Engineering and Design is being established at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The name of the program could be defined in a number of ways because few programs of this type exist and the field is so broad. Our emphasis is on the application of technology to enhance the entertainment value of live shows and rides. Steps being taken to establish this program are outlined, starting with an undergraduate minor and moving to an undergraduate major. The role of entertainment-based businesses in the development of this new program is also described.

Do Maps Guide The Way To Npd Success? Theoretical And Practical Aspects Of Knowledge Mapping In Product Development, Antonie J, Jetter Jan 2005

Do Maps Guide The Way To Npd Success? Theoretical And Practical Aspects Of Knowledge Mapping In Product Development, Antonie J, Jetter

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

New product development success largely depends on the ability to combine newly acquired information on customer demands and technological options with knowledge that exists within the company. Project organization and high employee turnover, however, make it difficult to be informed about what knowledge is available within the company and to access it successfully. Knowledge maps, a popular concept in present knowledge management, offer a possible solution by ?guiding the way to knowledge?. Their purpose, structure and content varies greatly, as does their ability to capture different aspects of knowledge. This paper investigates the theoretical basis of different types of knowledge …

Physically Based Multiscale-Viscoplastic Model For Metals And Steel Alloys: Theory And Computation, Farid H. Abed Jan 2005

Physically Based Multiscale-Viscoplastic Model For Metals And Steel Alloys: Theory And Computation, Farid H. Abed

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The main requirement of large deformation problems such as high-speed machining, impact, and various primarily metal forming, is to develop constitutive relations which are widely applicable and capable of accounting for complex paths of deformation. Achieving such desirable goals for material like metals and steel alloys involves a comprehensive study of their microstructures and experimental observations under different loading conditions. In general, metal structures display a strong rate- and temperature-dependence when deformed non-uniformly into the inelastic range. This effect has important implications for an increasing number of applications in structural and engineering mechanics. The mechanical behavior of these applications cannot …

Low Dielectric Constant Fluorocarbon Films Containing Silicon By Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition, Yoonyoung Jin Jan 2005

Low Dielectric Constant Fluorocarbon Films Containing Silicon By Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition, Yoonyoung Jin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Use of low relative dielectric constant (low-k) material as an interlayer dielectric is among important approaches to reduce the RC time delay in high performance ultra-large-scale integrated circuits. Copper metallization is another approach besides the use of low-k material, in reducing the RC delay time, because of its well-known characteristics of low resistivity and high electromigration resistance. Fluorocarbon films containing silicon (SiCF) have been developed in this work for low-k interlayer dielectric applications below 50 nm linewidth technology. The films were prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using gas precursors of tetrafluoromethane as the source of active species …

Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Thin Films For Ulsi Interconnect Metallization, Lidong Wang Jan 2005

Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Thin Films For Ulsi Interconnect Metallization, Lidong Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We have studied the kinetics of copper chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for interconnect metallization using solution delivery of Cu(hfac)2 (Cu(II) hexafluoroacetyl-acetonate) dissolved in isopropanol. We observe a growth rate of 17.7 „b 1.5 nm/min at reference conditions of 300„aC substrate temperature, 0.025 Torr Cu(hfac)2 partial pressure, 1.6 Torr isopropanol (reducing agent), and 80 Torr H2 (carrier gas). The film resistivity approaches the bulk value of copper for film thickness greater than 100 nm. Reaction order experiments show first-order kinetics with respect to Cu(hfac)2 partial pressure and zero-order with respect to isopropanol. A series reaction mechanism including three kinetically significant steps …

Incorporating The Impact Of Engineering Solutions On Society Into Technical Engineering Courses, Nicole Dejong-Okamoto, Jinny Rhee, Nikos J. Mourtos

Faculty Publications

In the era of market and workforce globalisation, engineers need a solid understanding of the impact that their products have locally, as well as globally. This is why the US Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) recently put a new spin on this requirement in engineering education. Specifically, outcome 3h of Engineering Criteria 2000 states that engineering graduates must have the broad education to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global/ societal context. This outcome may be one of the most difficult to achieve, since it requires not only a strong technical understanding, but also an informed …

Interference Suppression And Parameter Estimation In Wireless Communication Systems Over Time-Varing Multipath Fading Channels, Jianqiang He Jan 2005

Interference Suppression And Parameter Estimation In Wireless Communication Systems Over Time-Varing Multipath Fading Channels, Jianqiang He

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on providing solutions to two of the most important problems in wireless communication systems design, namely, 1) the interference suppression, and 2) the channel parameter estimation in wireless communication systems over time-varying multipath fading channels. We first study the interference suppression problem in various communication systems under a unified multirate transmultiplexer model. A state-space approach that achieves the optimal realizable equalization (suppression of inter-symbol interference) is proposed, where the Kalman filter is applied to obtain the minimum mean squared error estimate of the transmitted symbols. The properties of the optimal realizable equalizer are analyzed. Its relations with …

Speciation, Equilibria And Kinetics For Rainfall-Runoff Metals In Adsorptive-Filtration Unit Operations And Processes, Tianpeng Guo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Populations transferred by rainfall runoff can have many adverse effects livings and people. Treatment of rainfall-runoff continues to pose unique challenges due to the unsteady nature of processes including mobilization, partitioning and transport of heavy metals as well as other constituent loads. BMPs that incorporate heavy metal removal are generating more attention as the nature of stormwater is better understood. This dissertation focused on metal partitioning and speciation in rainfall-runoff through the in-situ Partial Exfiltration Reactor (PER) and exposed to various redox circumstances, and metal removal by sorptive engineered manganese oxides coated media. Adsorption capacity of three manganese oxides coated …

Long Term Pressure Behavior In Turbidite Reservoirs, Feng Wang Jan 2005

Long Term Pressure Behavior In Turbidite Reservoirs, Feng Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, we investigated several possible mechanisms that would give rise to the anomalous pressure behavior (early concave-up on Horner plot or upward drift on the derivative curve of the log-log plot and asymmetry between the pressure drawdown and buildup behavior) sometimes encountered in the turbidite reservoirs in GOM primarily using numerical simulation and 2-level experimental designs. We ascertained the most influential parameters to the pressure behavior and identified that multilayer commingled system and the leaky compartment model are the most probable mechanisms to cause the anomalous behavior due to layer or zone property contrast to a certain degree. …

Modeling The Flow Of Non-Newtonian Fluids In Packed Beds At The Pore Scale, Matthew Balhoff Jan 2005

Modeling The Flow Of Non-Newtonian Fluids In Packed Beds At The Pore Scale, Matthew Balhoff

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Flow and transport in porous media are important in many science and engineering applications such as composite materials, subsurface water contamination, packed-bed reactors, and enhanced oil recovery. The general approach to modeling such processes is at the continuum scale. Semi-empirical expressions, such as Darcy's law, are substituted for velocity in the continuity equation, which is then coupled with a momentum, mass, and energy balance. While a continuum approach is acceptable in some cases, additional modeling is required for certain non-linear flows, such as multi-phase flows, inertial flows, non-Newtonian flows, and reactive flows. Pore-scale modeling is a first-principles approach to modeling …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Although plants are envisioned to play a central role in life support systems for future long-duration space travel, plant growth in space has been problematic due to horticultural problems of nutrient delivery and gas resupply posed by the weightless environment. Iterative improvement in hardware designed for growth of plants on orbital platforms now provides confidence that plants can perform well in microgravity, enabling investigation of their nutritional characteristics. Plants of B. rapa (cv. Astroplants) were grown in the Biomass Production System on the International Space Station. Flowers were hand-pollinated and seeds were produced prior to harvest at 39 days after …

Depth-Shifting Of Shallow Water Guide Source Observations, Lisa M. Zurk, Brian H. Tracey Jan 2005

Depth-Shifting Of Shallow Water Guide Source Observations, Lisa M. Zurk, Brian H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In theory, matched field processing offers the significant benefit of higher signal gains and increased localization capability. However, this has not been robustly observed in practice because of inherent uncertainties about details of the shallow water propagation environments which limit the prediction of the channel response. The use of guide sources to directly measure the transfer function between source and receiver arrays has been proposed as a means for reducing mismatch. However, the guide source measurement only provides a measured transfer function at the guide source location. In this paper a method of depth-shifting guide source observations is proposed, making …

[5] An evolutionary algorithm based synthesizer for ternary quantum circuits has recently been presented, [2] as well as a synthesis method based on matrix factorization [3].In this paper, a recursive synthesis method for ternary quantum circuits based on the Cosine-Sine unitary matrix decomposition is presented.

Effects Of Focusing-Beam Field Variations On The Stability Of Laser Oscillators, Pitak Chenkosol, Lee W. Casperson Jan 2005

Effects Of Focusing-Beam Field Variations On The Stability Of Laser Oscillators, Pitak Chenkosol, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Semiclassical models for the dynamical behavior of single-longitudinal-mode, homogeneously broadened, unidirectional ring-laser oscillators have long been available. However, in most of these models the beam's cross section is assumed to be independent of longitudinal position in the laser, while in practical laser systems it is common for the diameter to vary with position. A model for lasers with focusing-beam field variations is developed here. Linear stability analysis shows that higher values of excitation are required to reach the type 1 instability threshold for lasers with longitudinal variations of the beam diameter than for the uniform plane-wave laser model.

Photocatalysis In A Novel Semiconducting Optical Fiber Monolithic Reactor For Wastewater Treatment, Hongfei Lin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The development of photocatalytic reactors is essential for the successful exploitation of heterogeneous photocatalysis on semiconductor particles, which has been shown to be an effective means of removing organic pollutants from wastewater streams. In this dissertation, a novel photocatalytic optical fiber monolith reactor (OFMR), which employed a ceramic multi-channel monolith as a support for TiO2 and quartz fibers inserted inside the monolithic channels as both a light-transmitting conductor and a support for TiO2, was developed for wastewater treatment by investigating the photocatalytic degradation of o-dichlorobenzene (DCB) and phenanthrene (PHE). This configuration provides a high surface area for catalyst coating per …

Establishing Physical Survivability Of Large Networks Using Properties Of Two-Connected Graphs, Daryoush Habibi, Hoang N. Nguyen, Quoc Viet Phung, Kung-Meng Lo Jan 2005

Establishing Physical Survivability Of Large Networks Using Properties Of Two-Connected Graphs, Daryoush Habibi, Hoang N. Nguyen, Quoc Viet Phung, Kung-Meng Lo

Research outputs pre 2011

Establishing the physical survivability of large networks is not a trivial task. Some techniques for assessing physical survivability such as the cutset method can not deal with large size networks (S. Ramamurthy and B. Mukherjee), (W.N. Grover and J. Doucette, 2001). A fast technique for finding biconnected components of a graph and testing the network for node-/link-bridges, presented in (W.D. Grover, 2004), does not provide any further information, such as identifying the fundamental cycles within the network, which would significantly benefit the next phase of network design for protection using such techniques as shared backup path protection (SBPP), p-cycle, or …

Image Segmentation Using Neuromorphic Integrate And Fire Cells, Gregory Crebbin Jan 2005

Image Segmentation Using Neuromorphic Integrate And Fire Cells, Gregory Crebbin

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper introduces an electronic circuit implementation of an integrate-and-fire cell. The cell generates output current pulses when the input light intensity exceeds a given threshold. A firing cell also transmits its firing pattern to neighbouring cells, thereby causing blocks of cells to fire in synchrony when their detectors receive similar input light intensities. The synchronicity and frequency of the pulses can be used to code an image into separate regions or objects. The actions of the cell are demonstrated with the simulation of a linear 8-cell array

An Analogue Recurrent Neural Networks For Trajectory Learning And Other Industrial Applications, Ganesh Kothapalli Jan 2005

An Analogue Recurrent Neural Networks For Trajectory Learning And Other Industrial Applications, Ganesh Kothapalli

Research outputs pre 2011

A real-time analogue recurrent neural network (RNN) can extract and learn the unknown dynamics (and features) of a typical control system such as a robot manipulator. The task at hand is a tracking problem in the presence of disturbances. With reference to the tasks assigned to an industrial robot, one important issue is to determine the motion of the joints and the effector of the robot. In order to model robot dynamics we use a neural network that can be implemented in hardware. The synaptic weights are modelled as variable gain cells that can be implemented with a few MOS …

Vlsi Implementation Of A Skin Detector Based On A Neural Network, Farid Boussaid, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Douglas Chai

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper describes the VLSI implementation of a skin detector based on a neural network. The proposed skin detector uses a multilayer perception with three inputs, one hidden layer, one output neuron and a saturating linear activation function to simplify the hardware implementation. The skin detector achieves a classification accuracy of 88.76%. To reduce mismatch associated errors, a single skin detection processing unit is used to classify all pixels of the input RGB image. The current-mode fully analog skin detection processing circuitry only performs computations during the read-out phase, enabling real-time processing. Fully programmable, the proposed skin detection processing circuitry …

A Shared Backup Path Protection Scheme For Optical Mesh Networks, Hoang N. Nguyen, Daryoush Habibi, Quoc Viet Phung, Kungmang Lo Jan 2005

A Shared Backup Path Protection Scheme For Optical Mesh Networks, Hoang N. Nguyen, Daryoush Habibi, Quoc Viet Phung, Kungmang Lo

Research outputs pre 2011

We propose a new heuristic ILP model for share backup path protection (SBPP) scheme of mesh networks, which used the sets of disjoint-joint primary-backup path candidates of using path-pair candidates. The solution of the model is near optimal and provides all the routing details of demands as well as the sharing information between backup paths, and also simplifies the wavelength assignment problem if the wavelength continuity is a consideration. The new entities are introduced into this model that allow to control the resource utilization as well as congestion level of the network for optimization purposes and the pre-processing of data …

K Pair Of Disjoint Paths Algorithm For Protection In Wdm Optical Networks, Quoc Viet Phung, Daryoush Habibi, Hoang N. Nguyen, Kungmang Lo

Research outputs pre 2011

Survivable routing in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks has been proven to be NP-hard problem. There is a trade-off between the computational time and the optimality of solutions in existing approaches to the problem. Existing heuristic approaches purely based the graph algorithms are efficient in computational time but do not offer optimal solutions and may fail in some cases even when a solution exists. Meanwhile, the integer linear programming (ILP) models offer optimal solutions but are intractable even with moderate scale networks. In this paper, we introduce a new algorithm for finding K pairs of disjoint paths which are …

Capacity Utilization Versus Congestion Levels In Wavelength Routing For Large Scale Wdm Networks, Quoc Viet Phung, Daryoush Habibi, Hoang N. Nguyen, Kungmang Lo

Research outputs pre 2011

Wavelength routing (WR) has been a key issue in WDM optical networks which carry huge amount of traffic aggregated from Internet protocol (IP), asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and SDH/SONET layers. The problem, however, has been proved NP-hard. The time complexity and the optimality of solutions are two conflicting metrics. In addition, for optimization purposes, capacity utilization and network congestion level can be compromised to reduce the blocking probability of future connections. In this paper, we propose a heuristic approach for WR in large scale networks based on a balanced model developed for the capacity utilization and the congestion level. This …

Dynamic P-Cycles Selection In Optical Wdm Mesh Networks, Kungmang Lo, Daryoush Habibi, Quoc Viet Phung, Hoang Nguyen, Byungkyu Kang Jan 2005

Dynamic P-Cycles Selection In Optical Wdm Mesh Networks, Kungmang Lo, Daryoush Habibi, Quoc Viet Phung, Hoang Nguyen, Byungkyu Kang

Research outputs pre 2011

P-cycles have been recognized as a useful protection scheme in WDM mesh networks. This is a type of shared link protection that not only retains the mesh-like capacity efficiency, but also achieves the ring-like protection switching speed. However, finding the optimal set of p-cycles for protecting traffic demands is not a simple task and is an NP-hard problem. A general approach is to determine a set of candidate p-cycles and then determine optimal or near-optimal solutions by using integer linear programming (ILP) models or heuristics. In a dense mesh network, however, the number of candidate cycles is huge, and increases …

Region Segmentation For Facial Image Compressing, Alexander Tropf, Douglas Chai Jan 2005

Region Segmentation For Facial Image Compressing, Alexander Tropf, Douglas Chai

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper addresses the segmentation of passport images in order to improve quality of significant regions and to further reduce redundancy of insignificant ones. The approach is to first segment a facial image into two major regions, namely background and foreground. Here a new technique using pixel difference is presented. To compress facial regions at better quality, a face segmentation algorithm is introduced that detects eyes and mouth in a face. Region of interest (ROI) coding is then used to obtain better quality for facial features. At the end, some strategies that make use of region segmentation are proposed in …

Dynamic Wavelength Routing In All Optical Mesh Network, Kungmang Lo, Daryoush Habibi, Quoc Viet Phung, Hoang Nghia Nguyen Jan 2005

Dynamic Wavelength Routing In All Optical Mesh Network, Kungmang Lo, Daryoush Habibi, Quoc Viet Phung, Hoang Nghia Nguyen

Research outputs pre 2011

Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) offers the capability to handle the increasing demand of network traffic in a manner that takes advantage of already deployed optical fibers. Lightpaths are optical connections carried end-to-end over a wavelength on each intermediate link. Wavelengths are the main resource in WDM networks. Due to the inherent channel constraints, a dynamic control mechanism is required to efficiently utilize the resource to maximize lightpath connections. In this paper, we investigate a class of adaptive routing called dynamic wavelength routing (DWR), in which wavelength converters (WCs) are not utilized in the network. The objective is to maximize the wavelength …

Throughput And Delay Optimization In Wdm Fddi Optical Network, Muhsen Aljada, Kamal Alameh, Khalid Al-Begain

Research outputs pre 2011

The rapidly growing Internet traffic are driving the demands for higher transmission capacity and higher processing speed, especially for the backbone networks. To support such bandwidth usage an optical Fiber Distributed Data Interface Wavelengtg Division Multiplexed (FDDI/WDM) network is proposed, wherein the wavelength channels are amplified using Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA's) to compensate for the losses over the optical fiber span. In this paper we investigate the network performance for both asynchronous and synchronous transmissions by measuring the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) along the ring, the optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) and the electrical SNR at different destinations. The …
