Investigations Of The Kinetics Of Liquid Droplets On Soil Substrates Using A Novel Approach: Contact Ratio, Abdelhafiz “Moh’D Adnan” Herbawi Jan 2005

Investigations Of The Kinetics Of Liquid Droplets On Soil Substrates Using A Novel Approach: Contact Ratio, Abdelhafiz “Moh’D Adnan” Herbawi

Theses

In view of young’s equation, in which the contact angle “ϑ” and the liquid surface tension γlv are the only measurable parameters, the contact angle has been widely conceived as a thermodynamic quantity. Accordingly “ϑ” has been the main focus of most theoretical and experimental investigations. The rate of change in the contact angle has been commonly used as the relevant parameter of spreading dynamics in spite of difficulties associated with contact angle measurements that are well recognized in the literature. Considering that the velocity of the contact line is the pertinent quantity for spreading, it is therefore reasonable …

Ductile Crack Growth Emanating From Sharp Notes In A Low Alloy Steel, Aladdin I. Abu-Assi Jan 2005

Ductile Crack Growth Emanating From Sharp Notes In A Low Alloy Steel, Aladdin I. Abu-Assi

Theses

Stable crack growth behavior emanating from a sharp notch is investigated. Material chosen for tests was EN 34 NiCrMo6 low alloy steel (akin to 4340/4330). Tests were carried out on CT specimens for various angles and ratios to obtain load vs, load-line displacement, ΡLL, curves. Experimental results were analyzed. A normalization approach of ΡLL curves has been attempted and all experimental curves were represented as a single characteristic curve. Such approach has been also applied on experimental data available from other experimental investigations and results were encouraging, as it may address transferability issue. Fracture surfaces were …

Investigation Of Epoxy Resin Spreading On Glass Surfaces, Haneen Nemer Al-Dahdooh Jan 2005

Investigation Of Epoxy Resin Spreading On Glass Surfaces, Haneen Nemer Al-Dahdooh

Theses

The spreading of a small epoxy resin droplet (l.5tL) on a glass surface was examined with the objective of developing a new type of hydrophobic polymer coated glass which has the ability to reduce heat gain inside a building. The study covered three main aspects; the spreading kinetics of epoxy resin on a glass surface, the hydophopicity of the developed polymer-coated glass surface, and the reduction of solar radiation of this surface, As wettability and spreading phenomena arc a fundamental prerequisite for coating, the spreading kinetics of different curing agent concentrations (15:200, 18:200, 21:200) of epoxy resin on the glass …

Measurement And Prediction Of Pressure Drop In Pneumatic Conveying: Effect Of Particle Characteristics, Mass Loading, And Reynolds Number, Kimberly H. Henthorn, Kinam Park, Jennifer S. Curtis Jan 2005

Measurement And Prediction Of Pressure Drop In Pneumatic Conveying: Effect Of Particle Characteristics, Mass Loading, And Reynolds Number, Kimberly H. Henthorn, Kinam Park, Jennifer S. Curtis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper reports the effect of Reynolds number, mass loading, and particle shape and size on pressure drop in a vertical gas-solids pneumatic conveying line. We isolate the effect of one variable while holding all others constant. A commonly used pressure drop correlation and a state-of-the-art multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models are then assessed by comparing their predictions to experimental data. Deficiencies in the models and the correlation are identified, and possible modifications are proposed. The most notable deficiency is the inability of both the experimental correlation and the CFD model to accurately predict the pressure drop for gas-solids …

Wetting Kinetics Of Films Containing Non-Adsorbing Polymers, S. Saritha, Xianzhong Zhang, Partho Neogi Jan 2005

Wetting Kinetics Of Films Containing Non-Adsorbing Polymers, S. Saritha, Xianzhong Zhang, Partho Neogi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Kinetics of wetting by a polymer solution have been studied theoretically for a film pinned to a slot. The fluid mechanical equations have been solved using a numerical scheme. The role of polymers appears in the disjoining pressure in the model. The spreading kinetics are observed to follow a power law: a power of (1/4) is observed at short times due to the Laplace pressure, and (1/2) at large times under the Hamaker part of the disjoining pressure at very large times and with no equilibration. It is argued and demonstrated that techniques which have low resolutions such as microscopy …

Special Session - Team Training To Promote Constructive (Not Destructive) Conflict, Ray Luechtefeld, Steve Eugene Watkins Jan 2005

Special Session - Team Training To Promote Constructive (Not Destructive) Conflict, Ray Luechtefeld, Steve Eugene Watkins

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Advancing technology increases the need for engineering students to perform effectively on multidisciplinary teams. While conflict is a normal, and even necessary, component of team dynamics, if not managed effectively it can lead to destructive (rather than constructive) outcomes. An Action Science approach to group and individual effectiveness can help teams handle conflict constructively. This session uses a "Teach the Teacher" approach to give participants a basic understanding of skills underlying the approach. It provides practice in Action Science through a set of learning modules. These skills can be brought back and integrated into the participants' courses to provide student …

Taxonomy Of Systems-Of-Systems, James Gideon, Cihan H. Dagli, Ann K. Miller Jan 2005

Taxonomy Of Systems-Of-Systems, James Gideon, Cihan H. Dagli, Ann K. Miller

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The study of systems-of-systems is an increasingly important topic in systems engineering. Though there is not complete agreement, a more precise definition of what these highly evolved systems are and what attributes they possess has certainly emerged. However, there are still areas in the study where the topic can be advanced by a more rigorous presentation of the basic elements. One such area is the taxonomy of systems-ofsystems. This paper will begin with the definition of systems-of-systems as it currently stands and will present the taxonomy from a broader view with additional considerations for classification. These taxonomic categories will consider …

An Sds Modeling Approach For Simulation-Based Control, Sreeram Ramakrishnan, Kumar Mayur Thakur Jan 2005

An Sds Modeling Approach For Simulation-Based Control, Sreeram Ramakrishnan, Kumar Mayur Thakur

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We initiate a study of mathematical models for specifying (discrete) simulation-based control systems. It is desirable to specify simulation-based control systems using a model that is intuitive, succinct, expressive, and whose state space properties are relatively easy computationally. We compare automata-based models for specifying control systems and find that all systems that are currently used (such as finite state machines, communicating hierarchical finite state machines (FSM), communicating finite state machines, and Turing machines) lack at least one of the abovementioned features. We propose using sequential dynamical systems (SDS) - a formalism for representing discrete simulations - to specify simulation-based control …

Alloy Recovery And Control In Steel Melting, Kent D. Peaslee, Darryl S. Webber, Semen Naumovich Lekakh, Bradley Randall Jan 2005

Alloy Recovery And Control In Steel Melting, Kent D. Peaslee, Darryl S. Webber, Semen Naumovich Lekakh, Bradley Randall

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Alloy recovery plays an important role in steel melting economics because the cost of alloying additives such as ferroalloys and pure non-ferrous metals is significantly higher than the cost of steel scrap. Recovery of alloying additives also influences the reproducibility of steel properties from heat to heat. This paper reviews alloy recovery and final chemistry distributions at seven steel foundries and preliminary laboratory studies of alloy dissolution in ladles. Melting and alloy practices were observed for several plant trial heats in each of the foundries. Alloying and chemistry data were collected for an additional 20 - 155 heats at each …

Efficiency In Steel Melting: Ladle Development, Kent D. Peaslee, Semen Naumovich Lekakh, Todd P. Sander, Jeffrey D. Smith

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective ladle design and use is important for steel casting production. In foundry operations, the ladle temperature of the liquid steel is typically 150 to 250°F above the steel's melting point to compensate for the heat losses in small ladles and the associated high cooling rates from the large surface area to volume ratios. Higher superheat is also necessary to provide sufficient steel fluidity to properly fill the mold cavity. In spite of the relatively short time that the steel is in contact with the ladle lining, the huge thermal gradients in the lining drive high values of heat flow …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article is aimed at studying the temperature dependence oxygen nonstoichiometry, magnetic moments, Fe3+ fraction, Néel temperature and conductivity of (La,Sr)FeO3-δ. It is found that the magnetic properties in La0.60 Sr0.40 Fe3-δ is determined by Fe3+ and its concentration, and the conductance is resulted from Fe4+ ions, which act as electron holes. Both of magnetic and electrical properties were directly governed by oxygen nonstoichiometry (δ). when δ=0.2, the compound has maximum Fe3+, the saturation magnetic moments and Néel temperature are 3.8 µB and 410 °C, both at the highest level, …

Study Of The Electronic Structure Of Cafeo₃, Jinbo Yang, M. S. Kim, Qingsheng Cai, X.-D. Zhou, Harlan U. Anderson, William Joseph James, William B. Yelon

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have studied the charge disproportionation phenomenon in CaFeO3 using the local-spin density approximation with the on-site Coulomb interaction parameter U and exchange parameter J. The calculation reveals that the total number of the 3d electrons is about 5.1 for both Fe(1)(Fe5+) and Fe(2)(Fe3+) atoms, and that there are about 0.25 electron holes in the O-2p band. Therefore, the charge disproportionation can be more accurately described as 2d5L(Fe4+)=d5L2(Fe5+)+d5(Fe3+), where L denotes a hole in the oxygen 2p band, instead of 2d4(Fe4+)=d3(Fe5+)+d5(Fe3+). The hybridization between the Fe-3d and O-2p orbitals is stronger for Fe(1) than for Fe(2) due to the shorter …

Complex System Contextual Framework (Cscf): A Grounded-Theory Construction For The Articulation Of System Context In Addressing Complex Systems Problems, W. B. Max Crownover

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The complexity of problems facing society continues to grow, and decision-makers and problem-solvers are finding many of today's emerging problems to be beyond their capability to adequately address. There is agreement in the literature that problems of this nature are complex system problems, inextricably linked to some highly complex system of systems. Establishing a clear understanding of the specific complex system context is fundamental to the process of understanding and analyzing complex systems and complex system problems across all of the different systems-based disciplines. While complex system context is widely referred to in systems literature, there is no clear characterization …

Modeling And Simulation Of Photonic Crystal Fibers And Distributed Feedback Photonic Crystal Fiber Lasers, Feng Wu Jan 2005

Modeling And Simulation Of Photonic Crystal Fibers And Distributed Feedback Photonic Crystal Fiber Lasers, Feng Wu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is comprised of a solid or air core surrounded by periodically arranged air holes running along the length of the fiber, which guides light in a fundamentally new way compared to conventional optical fibers, affecting almost all areas of optics and photonics. To analyze the dispersion and loss properties of PCFs, a two-dimensional (2D) finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method combined with the technique of perfectly matched layer (PML) is developed. The propagation constant and loss can be obtained with accuracies in the orders of ∼10-6 and ∼10 -3, respectively.

The Bragg fiber is a kind of …

Measurement And Control Of Torque Ripple-Induced Frame Torsional Vibration In A Surface Mount Permanent Magnet Machine, Jason Neely, Steven Pekarek, Daniel S. Stutts, Philip Beccue Jan 2005

Measurement And Control Of Torque Ripple-Induced Frame Torsional Vibration In A Surface Mount Permanent Magnet Machine, Jason Neely, Steven Pekarek, Daniel S. Stutts, Philip Beccue

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A sensor to measure the stator torsional vibration due to torque ripple produced by a surface mount permanent magnet machine is first described. The sensor is relatively inexpensive and is straight forward to incorporate into a drive system. Experiments are performed to validate that the voltage produced by the sensor is linearly related to torque ripple amplitude. Closed-loop controllers are then described that adjust the stator current harmonics applied to the machine to achieve a commanded average torque while mitigating measured torsional vibration. Simulation and experimental results are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control techniques.

Comparative Analysis Of Conventional And Ici-Self-Cancellation Digital Video Broadcasting Transceivers, Khaled Z. Matarneh Jan 2005

Comparative Analysis Of Conventional And Ici-Self-Cancellation Digital Video Broadcasting Transceivers, Khaled Z. Matarneh

LSU Master's Theses

Digital video broadcasting–terrestrial (DVB-T) is one of the important technologies in the communication area because of its capability of high data-rate multimedia transmission. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been the backbone technique in the current DVB-T systems adopted by Europe and Japan. However, since the OFDM system is very sensitive to the frequency synchronization and phase errors, which will induce the intercarrier interference (ICI), the ongoing research has been dedicated to this ICI problem in the presence of the Doppler frequency drift and the fading channels. A means to deal with the ICI problem is called the ICI self-cancellation …

Simulation Of Phonon-Assisted Band-To-Band Tunneling In Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Siyuranga O. Koswatta, Mark S. Lundstrom, M. P. Anantram, Dmitri E. Nikonov Jan 2005

Simulation Of Phonon-Assisted Band-To-Band Tunneling In Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Siyuranga O. Koswatta, Mark S. Lundstrom, M. P. Anantram, Dmitri E. Nikonov

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Electronic transport in a carbon nanotube metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor MOSFET is simulated using the nonequilibrium Green’s functions method with the account of electron-phonon scattering. For MOSFETs, ambipolar conduction is explained via phonon-assisted band-to-band Landau-Zener tunneling. In comparison to the ballistic case, we show that the phonon scattering shifts the onset of ambipolar conduction to more positive gate voltage thereby increasing the off current. It is found that the subthreshold swing in ambipolar conduction can be made as steep as 40 mV/decade despite the effect of phonon scattering

On The Role Of Phonon Scattering In Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Jing Guo, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 2005

On The Role Of Phonon Scattering In Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Jing Guo, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The role of phonon scattering in carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNTFETs) is explored by solving the Boltzmann transport equation using the Monte Carlo method. The results show that elastic scattering in a short-channel CNTFET has a small effect on the source-drain current due to the long elastic mean-free path (mfp) (~1μm)(~1μm). If elastic scattering with a short mfp were to exist in a CNTFET, the on current would be severely degraded due to the one-dimensional channel geometry. At high drain bias, optical phonon scattering, which has a much shorter mfp (~10nm)(~10nm), is expected to dominate, even in a short-channel CNTFET. …

Relative Effectiveness Of Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr: Sensitivity Analysis And Recommended Compression Rates, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR incorporates alternating chest and abdominal compressions to generate enhanced artificial circulation during cardiac arrest. The technique has been generally successful in improving blood flow and survival compared to standard CPR; however some questions remain. Objective: To determine "why does IAC-CPR produce more apparent benefit in some subjects than in others? and "what is the proper compression rate, given that there are actually two compressions (chest and abdomen) in each cycle?" Method: Computer models provide a means to search for subtle effects in complex systems. The present study employs a validated 12-compartment mathematical model of the human …
