Influence Of Calcite And Dissolved Calcium On Uranium(Vi) Sorption To A Hanford Subsurface Sediment, Wenming Dong, William Ball, Chongxuan Liu, Zheming Wang, Alan Stone, Jing Bai, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The influence of calcite and dissolved calcium on U(VI) adsorption was investigated using a calcite-containing sandy silt/clay sediment from the U. S. Department of Energy Hanford site. U(VI) adsorption to sediment, treated sediment, and sediment size fractions was studied in solutions that both had and had not been preequilibrated with calcite, at initial [U(VI)] ) 10-7-10-5 mol/L and final pH ) 6.0- 10.0. Kinetic and reversibility studies (pH 8.4) showed rapid sorption (30 min), with reasonable reversibility in the 3-day reaction time. Sorption from solutions equilibrated with calcite showed maximum U(VI) adsorption at pH 8.4 ± 0.1. …

Influence Of Sediment Bioreduction And Reoxidation On Uranium Sorption, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, Lirong Zhong, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, Jim Szecsody, Dave Kennedy

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The influence of sediment bioreduction and reoxidation on U(VI) sorption was studied using Fe(III) oxide-containing saprolite from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge site. Bioreduced sediments were generated by anoxic incubation with a metal-reducing bacterium, Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32, supplied with lactate as an electron donor. The reduced sediments were subsequently reoxidized by air contact. U(VI) sorption was studied in Na- NO3-HCO3 electrolytes that were both closed and open to atmosphere and where pH, U(VI), and carbonate concentration were varied. Mössbauer spectroscopy and chemical analyses showed that 50% of the Fe(III)- oxides were reduced to …

Fluorescence Spectroscopy Of U(Vi)-Silicates And U(Vi)-Contaminated Hanford Sediment, Zheming Wang, John M. Zachara, Paul Gassman, Chongxuan Liu, Odeta Qafoku, Wassana Yantasee, Jeff Catalano

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Time-resolved U(VI) laser fluorescence spectra (TRLFS) were recorded for a series of natural uranium-silicate minerals including boltwoodite, uranophane, soddyite, kasolite, sklodowskite, cuprosklodowskite, haiweeite, and weeksite, a synthetic boltwoodite, and four U(VI)-contaminated Hanford vadose zone sediments. Lowering the sample temperature from RT to ~5.5 K significantly enhanced the fluorescence intensity and spectral resolution of both the minerals and sediments, offering improved possibilities for identifying uranyl species in environmental samples. At 5.5 K, all of the uranyl silicates showed unique, well-resolved fluorescence spectra. The symmetric O = U = O stretching frequency, as determined from the peak spacing of the vibronic bands …

Enzymology Of Electron Transport: Energy Generation With Geochemical Consequences, Thomas J. Dichristina, James K. Fredrickson, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria (DMRB) are important components of the microbial community residing in redox-stratified freshwater and marine environments. DMRB occupy a central position in the biogeochemical cycles of metals, metalloids and radionuclides, and serve as catalysts for a variety of other environmentally important processes including biomineralization, biocorrosion, bioremediation and mediators of ground water quality. DMRB are presented, however, with a unique physiological challenge: they are required to respire anaerobically on terminal electron acceptors which are either highly insoluble (e.g., Fe(III)- and Mn(IV)-oxides) and reduced to soluble end-products or highly soluble (e.g., U(VI) and Tc(VII)) and reduced to insoluble end-products. United States Department of Energy: Publications

Photoionization and electron-impact ionization of Xe3+ ions in the region of 4d inner-shell excitation autoionization have been studied using interacting-beam spectroscopic techniques. Absolute cross sections for photoionization of Xe3+ have been obtained and the electron-impact spectrum has been normalized to previously published absolute data. The Xe3+ spectra show large contributions from 4d→nf excitation autoionization processes compared to the lower charge states of Xe due to the significant collapse of the nf wave functions into the ion core as the initial charge state of the ion is increased. In addition, a tentative value for …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) is shown to be a powerful imaging technique that provides chemical selectivity and high spatial resolution (~35 nm) for studying chemically amplified photoresists. Samples of poly (4-t-butoxycarbonyloxystyrene) PTBOCST resist, imprinted by deep ultraviolet lithography with a line/space pattern of 1.10 μm/ 0.87 μm followed by a post-exposure bake, are used to demonstrate STXM imaging capabilities to extract photoresist latent images. Chemical contrast is obtained by measuring the x-ray absorption at an energy of 290.5 eV, corresponding to a carbon K shell electronic transition to the unoccupied π* molecular orbital of the PTBOCST …

Photoionization of multiply charged ions is studied using the merged-beams technique at the Advanced Light Source. An ion beam is created using a compact 10-GHz all-permanent-magnet ECR ion source and is accelerated with a small accelerator. The ion beam is merged with a photon beam from an undulator to allow interaction over an extended path. Absolute photoionization cross sections have been measured for a variety of ions along both isoelectronic and isonuclear sequences.

Neutral C60 is well known to exhibit a giant resonance in its photon absorption spectrum near 20 eV. This is associated with a surface plasmon, where delocalized electrons oscillate as a whole relative to the ionic cage. Absolute photoionization cross-section measurements for C+60, C2+60, and C3+60 ions in the 17– 75 eV energy range show an additional resonance near 40 eV. Time-dependent density functional calculations confirm the collective nature of this feature, which is characterized as a dipole-excited volume plasmon made possible by the special fullerene geometry.

Potential Of Multivariate Quantitative Methods For Delineation And Visualization Of Ecoregions, William Hargrove, Forrest Hoffman Jan 2005

Potential Of Multivariate Quantitative Methods For Delineation And Visualization Of Ecoregions, William Hargrove, Forrest Hoffman

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Multivariate clustering based on fine spatial resolution maps of elevation, temperature, precipitation, soil characteristics, and solar inputs has been used at several specified levels of division to produce a spectrum of quantitative ecoregion maps for the conterminous United States. The coarse ecoregion divisions accurately capture intuitively-understood regional environmental differences, whereas the finer divisions highlight local condition gradients, ecotones, and clines. Such statistically generated ecoregions can be produced based on user-selected continuous variables, allowing customized regions to be delineated for any specific problem. By creating an objective ecoregion classification, the ecoregion concept is removed from the limitations of human subjectivity, making …

Carbon Nanotubes With Covalently Linked Porphyrin Antennae: Photoinduced Electron Transfer, Durairaj Baskaran, Jimmy W. Mays, X. Peter Zhang, Matthew S. Bratcher Jan 2005

Carbon Nanotubes With Covalently Linked Porphyrin Antennae: Photoinduced Electron Transfer, Durairaj Baskaran, Jimmy W. Mays, X. Peter Zhang, Matthew S. Bratcher

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Functionalization of carbon nanotubes through surface modification has attracted significant interest recently. Covalent and noncovalent functionalization strategies involving reactions of organic or polymeric molecules onto carbon nanotubes have primarily focused on dispersion or dissolution properties. Incorporation of light absorbing antenna chromophores through a covalent linkage with the extended π electrons of a carbon nanotube would constitute an ideal supramolecular nanoassembly for generating singlet excited energy and its conversion to chemical energy. Porphyrins are one such class of molecules used in assemblies of donor-acceptor materials in molecular electronics and photovoltaic devices.

Several fullerene-based molecular systems with covalently linked porphyrins and metalloporphyrins …

Noncovalent And Nonspecific Molecular Interactions Of Polymers With Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes, Durairaj Baskaran, Jimmy W. Mays, Matthew S. Bratcher

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Polymer composites containing variable amounts of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been prepared using solution dispersion and melt-shear mixing. Various polymer composites with 1 wt % MWNTs have been found to dissolve homogeneously in organic solvents. The amount of polymer coated or wrapped MWNTs dissolved in the solution was quantified using UV-vis absorbance at 500 nm and the concentration ratio of [MWNTs]solution/[MWNTs]composite was close to 1. A nonspecific polymer adsorption through multiple-weak molecular interactions of CH groups with MWNTs in the composites has been identified through FTIR spectroscopy. The composites of polybutadiene with different wt % of …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

To test a conceptual model of non-linear response of hydrologic regimes to watershed characteristics, we selected 48 secondand third-order study sites on the North and South Shores of western Lake Superior, MN(USA) using a random-stratified design based on hydrogeomorphic region, fraction mature forest, and fraction watershed storage (lakeCwetland area/watershed area). We calculated several commonly used hydrologic indices from discharge and velocity estimates, including daily flow indices, overall flood indices, low flow variables, and ratios or ranges of flow percentiles reflecting the nature of cumulative frequency distributions. Four principal components (PCs) explained 85.9 and 88.6% of the variation of flow metrics …

The main aim of the international UNECE monitoring program ICP Waters under the Convention of Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP) is to assess, on a regional basis, the degree and geographical extent of the impact of atmospheric pollution, in particular acidification, on surface waters. Regional trends are calculated for 12 geographical regions in Europe and North America, comprising 189 surface waters sites. From 1990-2001 sulphate concentrations decreased in all but one of the investigated regions. Nitrate increased in only one region, and decreased in three North American regions. Improvements in alkalinity and pH are widely observed. Results from the ICP …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

One dimensional magnetic photonic crystals (1D-MPC) are promising structures for integrated optical isolator applications. Rare earth substituted garnet thin films with proper Faraday rotation are required to fabricate planar 1D-MPCs. In this thesis, flat-top response 1D-MPC was proposed and spectral responses and Faraday rotation were modeled. Bismuth substituted iron garnet films were fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering and structures, compositions, birefringence and magnetooptical properties were studied. Double layer structures for single mode propagation were also fabricated by sputtering for the first time.

Multilayer stacks with multiple defects (phase shift) composed of Ce-YIG and GGG quarter-wave plates were simulated by the …

Preconditioning Of Primary Human Endothelial Cells With Inflammatory Mediators Alters The “Set Point” Of The Cell, Youichiro Wada, Hasan H. Otu, Shengqian Wu, Md. Ruhul Abid, Hitomi Okada, Towia Libermann, Tatsuhiko Kodama, Shu-Ching Shih, Takashi Minami, William C. Aird Jan 2005

Preconditioning Of Primary Human Endothelial Cells With Inflammatory Mediators Alters The “Set Point” Of The Cell, Youichiro Wada, Hasan H. Otu, Shengqian Wu, Md. Ruhul Abid, Hitomi Okada, Towia Libermann, Tatsuhiko Kodama, Shu-Ching Shih, Takashi Minami, William C. Aird

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Endothelial cells are highly sensitive to changes in the extracellular milieu. Sepsis results in activation of inflammatory and coagulation pathways. We hypothesized that sepsis-associated mediators may alter the response capacity (so-called “set point”) of endothelial cells. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were preincubated in the presence or absence of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), hypoxia, hyperthermia, and/or high glucose; treated with or without thrombin for 4 h; and then processed for RNase protection assays of selected activation markers. Priming with TNF-α and LPS significantly inhibited thrombin-mediated induction of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, tissue factor, and …

Performance Of Convolutional Interleavers With Different Spacing Parameters In Turbo Codes, Sina Vafi, Tadeusz Wysocki Jan 2005

Performance Of Convolutional Interleavers With Different Spacing Parameters In Turbo Codes, Sina Vafi, Tadeusz Wysocki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

This paper considers application of a convolutional interleaver and the issue of infuence of the space parameter in the turbo code performance. Similarly to previously considered convolutional interleavers, the new interleavers are designed as block interleavers and their performance in different code structures is compared with the interleaver having higher periods and space value of 1. In each comparison, the number of inserted stuff bits at the end of each data block is considered to be of similar order. Finally, suitable modification to the new interleavers is proposed improving performance for the codes with lower number of stuff bits.

Preparation And Evaluation Of The Electrospun Chitosan/Peo Fibers For Potential Applications In Cartilage Tissue Engineering, Anuradha Subramanian, David Vu, Gustavo F. Larsen, Hsin Yii Lin

Papers in Biotechnology

Fibrous materials have morphological similarities to natural cartilage extracellular matrix and have been considered as candidate for bone tissue engineering scaffolds. In this study, we have evaluated a novel electrospun chitosan mat composed of oriented sub-micron fibers for its tensile property and biocompatibility with chondrocytes (cell attachment, proliferation and viability). Scanning electronic microscope images showed the fibers in the electrospun chitosan mats were indeed aligned and there was a slight cross-linking between the parent fibers. The electrospun mats have significantly higher elastic modulus (2.25 MPa) than the cast films (1.19 MPa). Viability of cells on the electrospun mat was 69% …

Observations Of The Small-Scale Variability Of Precipitation Using An Imaging Radar, Robert D. Palmer, Boon Leng Cheong, Michael Hoffman, Stephen J. Frasier, F.J. Lopez-Dekker

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

For many years, spatial and temporal inhomogeneities in precipitation fields have been studied using scanning radars, cloud radars, and disdrometers, for example. Each measurement technique has its own advantages and disadvantages. Conventional profiling radars point vertically and collect data while the atmosphere advects across the field of view. Invoking Taylor’s frozen turbulence hypothesis, it is possible to construct time-history data, which are used to study the structure and dynamics of the atmosphere. In the present work, coherent radar imaging is used to estimate the true three-dimensional structure of the atmosphere within the field of view of the radar. The 915-MHz …

Dilation Of The Oropharynx Via Selective Stimulation Of The Hypoglossal Nerve, Jingtao Huang Jan 2005

Dilation Of The Oropharynx Via Selective Stimulation Of The Hypoglossal Nerve, Jingtao Huang

Doctoral Dissertations

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by the retraction of the tongue to occlude the upper airway (UAW). Electrical stimulation of the tongue protrudor and retractor muscle has been demonstrated as an effective technique to alleviate UAW obstructions and is considered to be a potential treatment for OSA. Recent studies have shown that selective stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve (HG) to activate tongue muscles using a single implantable device presents an attractive approach for treating OSA. In this study, the functional outcome of selective hypoglossal nerve stimulation with a multi-contact peripheral nerve electrode was studied by imaging the airway in …

Mercury And C2B10 Icosahedra Interaction, Carolina C. Ilie, Petru Lunca-Popa, Jiandi Zhang, Bernard Doudin, Peter A. Dowben Jan 2005

Mercury And C2B10 Icosahedra Interaction, Carolina C. Ilie, Petru Lunca-Popa, Jiandi Zhang, Bernard Doudin, Peter A. Dowben

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

We contrast the interaction of mercury with adsorbed orthocarborane films and semiconducting (dehydrogenated) boron carbide. Photoemission spectra reveal small shifts in orthocarborane (C2B10H12) molecular orbital binding energies as well as the shift in mercury 5d5/2shallow core level binding energies, suggesting only small interaction between mercury and the molecular film. Mercury does, however, interact with decomposed orthocarboranes i.e. semiconducting boron carbide.

Electronic Commerce Negotiation In A Supply Chain Via Constraint Evaluation, R. Wilhelm, B. Chu, R. Sun Jan 2005

Electronic Commerce Negotiation In A Supply Chain Via Constraint Evaluation, R. Wilhelm, B. Chu, R. Sun

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Negotiation is of critical importance in e-commerce applications where the supply chain is dynamic and reconfiguring. In this research supply chain negotiation problems are addressed as constraint-satisfaction problems. In general each negotiation is handled in the largest scope possible to avoid the suboptimality that can result from many local solutions. This global approach, however, must be balanced with time constraints that apply in e-commerce supply chain execution. In this paper, we describe a new approach for e-commerce supply chain negotiation via constraint evaluation. As well, results from prototype software, distributed across the internet, are discussed. Beyond the general formulation, we …

Enhancing Erp System’S Functionality With Discrete Event Simulation, Young Moon, Dinar Phatak Jan 2005

Enhancing Erp System’S Functionality With Discrete Event Simulation, Young Moon, Dinar Phatak

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - All Scholarship

Purpose – To develop a methodology to augment enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems with the discrete event simulation’s inherent ability to handle the uncertainties.

Design/methodology/approach – The ERP system still contains and uses the material requirements planning (MRP) logic as its central planning function. As a result, the ERP system inherits a number of shortcomings associated with the MRP system, including unrealistic lead-time determination. The developed methodology employs bi-directional feedback between the non-stochastic ERP system and the discrete event simulation model until a set of converged lead times is determined.

Findings – An example of determining realistic production lead-time data …
