Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Neointimal hyperplasia remains an important problem after stent implantation. Previous investigations examining vascular responses to stent implantation and effects of drugs have used a retrograde deployment approach that may inadvertently alter the local fluid dynamics surrounding the stent. We present a model of antegrade iliac artery stent implantation that facilitates the analysis of stent-induced alterations in neointimal hyperplasia and wall shear stress in vivo. Methods: Stent delivery catheters were inserted through the left carotid artery in anesthetized rabbits (n=37). Catheters were advanced under fluoroscopic guidance to the distal iliac arteries, where the stent was deployed. Hemotoxylin and eosin …

Effect Of Tensile Offset Angles On Micro/Nanoscale Tensile Testing, Xiaodong Li, Xinnan Wang, Wei-Che Chang, Yuh-Jin Chao, Ming Chang
Faculty Publications
For one-dimensional (1D) structures such as tubes, wires, and beams, tensile testing is a simple and reliable methodology for measuring their mechanical properties. The tensile offset angle effect on mechanical property measurement has long been ignored. In this study, theoretical and finite-element analysis(FEA) models for analyzing the tensile offset angle effect have been established. It is found that longitudinal stress decreases with increasing offset angles. The theoretically calculated elastic modulus relative errors reach 4.45% at the offset angle of 10°, whereas the experimentally measured elastic modulus relative errors are 45.4% at the offset angle of 15°. The difference in elastic …

This paper describes the basic design, refinement, and verification using finite-element analysis, and operational simulation using the Virtual Test Bed, of a linear machine for an electromagnetic aircraft launcher, for the aircraft carrier of the future. Choices of basic machine format and procedures for determining basic dimensions are presented. A detailed design for a permanent-magnet version is presented, and wound-field coil and induction machine versions are briefly discussed. The long armature-short field geometry is justified, and in particular the impact of this geometry on the scale of the power electronic drive system is examined.

Study And Design Of A Capacitively Coupled Polymeric Internal Antenna, Khan M.Z. Shams, Mohammod Ali
Faculty Publications
A capacitively coupled polymeric internal antenna is introduced for Bluetooth or GPS applications. Such an antenna can be easily fabricated on a flexible film substrate and attached to the inside surface of the plastic housing of a portable wireless device; such as a PDA. The proposed antenna saves critical space on the printed circuit board (PCB) and eliminates the need for a vertical contact feed. Thus manufacturing is also simplified and cost is reduced. Practical examples of utilizing such a concept for Bluetooth (2.45 GHz) and GPS (1.575 GHz) applications are provided. The antenna system requires a small coupling plate …

Pulse Detonation Engine Thrust Tube Heat Exchanger For Flash Vaporization And Supercritical Heating Of Jp-8, Christen L. Miser
Pulse Detonation Engine Thrust Tube Heat Exchanger For Flash Vaporization And Supercritical Heating Of Jp-8, Christen L. Miser
Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown that performance of liquid hydrocarbon fueled pulse detonation engines is limited by the time required to evaporate liquid fuel droplets within the mixture. Vaporization of liquid fuels prior to injection has been shown to decrease ignition times and also increases fuel efficiency; however, the size and efficiency of the vaporization system used are not feasible for use in future pulse detonation aircraft concepts. The purpose of this research is to harness the waste heat of pulse detonation engine thrust tubes to generate a steady-state, self-sustained flash vaporization and supercritical heating system using JP-8 as the working fluid …
Computational Model Of One-Dimensional Dielectric Barrier Discharges, Krista G. Marchand
Computational Model Of One-Dimensional Dielectric Barrier Discharges, Krista G. Marchand
Theses and Dissertations
As theory lags experiment for dielectric barrier discharge flow control, two different computational methods are implemented to give further insight into characteristics of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). A one-dimensional fluid model of a surface-type dielectric barrier discharge is created using He as the background gas. This simple model, which only considers ionizing collisions and recombination in the electropositive gas, creates an important framework for future studies into the origin of experimentally observed flow-control effects of the DBD. The two methods employed in this study include the semi-implicit sequential algorithm and the fully implicit simultaneous algorithm. The first involves consecutive …

Development Of 2-Dimensional Cloud Rise Model To Analyze Initial Nuclear Cloud Rise, Karson A. Sandman
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research is to create a two-dimensional cloud rise model that could be used instead of the current one-dimensional cloud rise model in the Defense Land Fallout Intepretive Code (DELFIC) option of the Hazard Prediction and Assessment Capability (HPAC). The model includes numerical analysis of partial differential equations involving pressure, potential temperature, horizontal and vertical winds, and specific humidity. The 2-D model developed provides a much more detailed definition of the physical properties within the mushroom cloud than the 1-D DELFIC option. This is particularly useful in fallout studies on particle formation, fractionation, and particle location within …

Neutron Multiplicity Measurements For The Afci Program Quarterly Progress Report January-March 2005, Denis Beller
Neutron Multiplicity Measurements For The Afci Program Quarterly Progress Report January-March 2005, Denis Beller
Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)
The U.S. Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) is a program to develop economic and environmental methods to reduce the impact of waste from commercial nuclear fuel cycles. One concept for near-complete destruction of waste isotopes from used nuclear fuel is accelerator driven transmutation. High-power accelerators would be used to produce high-energy charged particles, which then collide with heavy metal targets to create a cascade of neutrons. These neutrons then cause a nuclear chain reaction in subcritical systems. Fission neutrons then transmute fissile waste isotopes as well as other problematic isotopes such as technetium-99 and iodine-129. To design these systems, complex …

Circumferential Vascular Deformation After Stent Implantation Alters Wall Shear Stress Evaluated With Time-Dependent 3d Computational Fluid Dynamics Models, John F. Ladisa, Lars E. Olson, Ismail Guler, Douglas Anthony Hettrick, Judy R. Kersten, David C. Warltier, Paul S. Pagel
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The success of vascular stents in the restoration of blood flow is limited by restenosis. Recent data generated from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models suggest that stent geometry may cause local alterations in wall shear stress (WSS) that have been associated with neointimal hyperplasia and subsequent restenosis. However, previous CFD studies have ignored histological evidence of vascular straightening between circumferential stent struts. We tested the hypothesis that consideration of stent-induced vascular deformation may more accurately predict alterations in indexes of WSS that may subsequently account for histological findings after stenting. We further tested the hypothesis that the severity of these …
Development Of A Higher-Order Upwind Algorithm For Compressible Fluid Flow, Barry A. Croker
Development Of A Higher-Order Upwind Algorithm For Compressible Fluid Flow, Barry A. Croker
Theses and Dissertations
A global fourth-order solution method that incorporates compact differencing with Roe's approximate Riemann solver was investigated. This method was incorporated into a one-dimensional numerical simulation of the compressible Euler equations, and applied to a one-dimensional shock tube problem. The method was also extended to two dimensions, and applied to a two-dimensional shock tube problem and an advecting vortical structure problem on both rectilinear and curvilinear meshes. The results were compared to a third-order Roe scheme and a fourth-order compact difference scheme. An order of accuracy determination showed that it has an order of accuracy somewhere near fourth order, with absolute …

The time accurate parachute model is based on empirical …
An Investigation Of A Simplified Gouging Model, Gregory S. Rickerd
An Investigation Of A Simplified Gouging Model, Gregory S. Rickerd
Theses and Dissertations
Gouging is a type of structural failure that becomes important when two metals slide against each other at velocities in the range of 1.5 kilometers per second. A computer model has previously been used to model the development of gouging at the Holloman High Speed Test Track. This model has not been experimentally verified to be correct, due to the complexity of the model. This research develops a simplified model that can be experimentally verified. The computer program utilized in this research was studied to determine the most appropriate options to use in simulations. This was accomplished by modeling a …

Controlling Sideslip Angle To Reduce The Radar Exposure Of A Tactical, Rotary Winged Uav, Jonathan D. Bulseco
Theses and Dissertations
This work investigates another way of contributing to the radar minimization solution for air vehicles in a threat environment. While much research has been conducted on structural solutions to radar exposure minimization, not much work has been done in the area of using control to continuously assess and present the smallest radar cross section of an air vehicle to oncoming threat radar systems by changing the aircraft's orientation. This work looks at the application of sideslip/beta angle feedback control of an unmanned helicopter to minimize radar cross section exposure in a hostile radar environment. A new way of controlling aircraft …

This thesis records an analytical study designed to investigate the intricacies of tail rotor design and, by the computational …
Attitude Model Of A Reaction Wheel/Fixed Thruster Based Satellite Using Telemetry Data, Jason E. Smith
Attitude Model Of A Reaction Wheel/Fixed Thruster Based Satellite Using Telemetry Data, Jason E. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Attitude determination of satellites is normally the job of inertial instruments, such as gyroscopes, or through sensing instruments, such as star trackers or Global Positioning Satellites (GPS). Satellite health monitoring systems watch and determine if the satellite deviates from its normal operating attitude orientation. Knowing the orientation of a satellite is essential in being able to control it in order to complete the satellite's designated mission. While there are a multitude of ways to determine a satellite's orientation, very little research has been done on determining if the attitude of a satellite can be determined directly from telemetry data of …

Orbit Estimation Algorithms For A Microsatellite Rendezvous With A Non-Cooperative Target, John P. Heslin
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the minimum requirements to establish a satellite tracking system architecture for a microsatellite to rendezvous with a non-cooperative target satellite. A prototype optical tracking system was reviewed with emphasis on a proposed tactical employment that could be used by technologically unsophisticated state or non-state adversaries. With the tracking system architecture selected, simulated tracking data was processed with a Non-Linear Least Squares batch orbit estimation algorithm and a Bayes sequential orbit determination filter to update the target satellite's state vector.
