Long Stemmed Total Knee Arthroplasty With Interlocking Screws: A Computational Bone Adaptation Study, Jeffry S. Nyman, Scott J. Hazelwood, Juan J. Rodrigo, R. Bruce Martin, Oscar C. Yeh Jan 2004

Long Stemmed Total Knee Arthroplasty With Interlocking Screws: A Computational Bone Adaptation Study, Jeffry S. Nyman, Scott J. Hazelwood, Juan J. Rodrigo, R. Bruce Martin, Oscar C. Yeh

Biomedical Engineering

The ability of an interlocking screw fixation technique to minimize bone loss related to stress shielding in the tibia was investigated and compared to the abilities of cement and press-fit fixation. Full bony ingrowth has been associated with greater stress shielding than partial ingrowth; therefore, the effect of intimate bonding of the stem to bone on subsequent bone loss was also studied. A damage-and disuse-based remodeling theory was coupled with a two-dimensional finite element model of the tibia to predict changes in bone remodeling following long stemmed total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for four different fixation techniques (cement, press-fit, interlock with …

Topology And Control Investigation For Low-Voltage High-Current Isolated Dc-Dc Converters, Hong Mao Jan 2004

Topology And Control Investigation For Low-Voltage High-Current Isolated Dc-Dc Converters, Hong Mao

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

High conversion efficiency and fast transient response at high switching frequency are the two main challenges for low-voltage high-current DC-DC converters, which are the motivations of the dissertation work.

To reduce the switching power loss, soft switching is a desirable technique to keep power loss under control at high switching frequencies. A Duty-Cycle-Shift (DCS) concept is proposed for half-bridge DC-DC converters to reduce switching loss. The concept of this new control scheme is shifting one of the two symmetric PWM driving signals close to the other, such that ZVS can be achieved for the lagging switch due to the shortened …

Nonlinear Adaptive Estimation Andits Application To Synchronization Of Lorenz System, Yufang Jin Jan 2004

Nonlinear Adaptive Estimation Andits Application To Synchronization Of Lorenz System, Yufang Jin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Synchronization and estimation of unknown constant parameters for Lorenz-type transmitter are studied under the assumption that one of the three state variables is not transmitted and that transmitter parameters are not known apriori. An adaptive algorithm is proposed to estimate both the state and system parameters. Since Lorenz system shows the property of sensitivity to initial conditions and evolves in different mode with parameter variation, an equivalent system is introduced. The adaptive observer is designed based on this equivalent system without any requirement on initial conditions of the observer. It is shown by Lyapunov arguments and persistent excitation analysis that …

Chemical Structure - Nonlinear Optical Property Relationships For A Series Of Two-Photon Absorbing Fluorene Molecules, Joel Mccajah Hales Jan 2004

Chemical Structure - Nonlinear Optical Property Relationships For A Series Of Two-Photon Absorbing Fluorene Molecules, Joel Mccajah Hales

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation reports on the investigation of two-photon absorption (2PA) in a series of fluorenyl molecules. Several current and emerging technologies exploit this optical nonlinearity including two-photon fluorescence imaging, three-dimensional microfabrication, site-specific photodynamic cancer therapy and biological caging studies. The two key features of this nonlinearity which make it an ideal candidate for the above applications are its quadratic dependence on the incident irradiance and the improved penetration into absorbing media that it affords. As a consequence of the burgeoning field which exploits 2PA, it is a goal to find materials that exhibit strong two-photon absorbing capabilities. Organic materials are …

Effect Of Coriolis And Centrifugal Forces On Turbulence And Transport At High Rotation And Buoyancy Numbers, Ahmad Khalaf Sleiti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study attempts to understand one of the most fundamental and challenging problems in fluid flow and heat transfer for rotating machines. The study focuses on gas turbines and electric generators for high temperature and high energy density applications, respectively, both which employ rotating cooling channels so that materials do not fail under high temperature and high stress environment. Prediction of fluid flow and heat transfer inside internal cooling channels that rotate at high rotation number and high density ratio similar to those that are existing in turbine blades and generator rotors is the main focus of this study. Both …

Partitioning A Graph In Alliances And Its Application To Data Clustering, Khurram Hassan-Shafique Jan 2004

Partitioning A Graph In Alliances And Its Application To Data Clustering, Khurram Hassan-Shafique

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Any reasonably large group of individuals, families, states, and parties exhibits the phenomenon of subgroup formations within the group such that the members of each group have a strong connection or bonding between each other. The reasons of the formation of these subgroups that we call alliances differ in different situations, such as, kinship and friendship (in the case of individuals), common economic interests (for both individuals and states), common political interests, and geographical proximity. This structure of alliances is not only prevalent in social networks, but it is also an important characteristic of similarity networks of natural and unnatural …

Evolutionary Optimization Of Support Vector Machines, Fred Gruber Jan 2004

Evolutionary Optimization Of Support Vector Machines, Fred Gruber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Support vector machines are a relatively new approach for creating classifiers that have become increasingly popular in the machine learning community. They present several advantages over other methods like neural networks in areas like training speed, convergence, complexity control of the classifier, as well as a stronger mathematical background based on optimization and statistical learning theory. This thesis deals with the problem of model selection with support vector machines, that is, the problem of finding the optimal parameters that will improve the performance of the algorithm. It is shown that genetic algorithms provide an effective way to find the optimal …

Selective Mode Excitation In Specialty Waveguides Using Micro Optical, Waleed Mohammed Jan 2004

Selective Mode Excitation In Specialty Waveguides Using Micro Optical, Waleed Mohammed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although optical fibers and specialty waveguides are the base of majority of today's telecom and light delivery applications, fabrication deformation, nonlinearity and attenuation limit the bandwidth of the data being transmitted or the amount of power carried by these systems. One-way to overcome these limitations without changing the fibers design or fabrication is to engineer the input light in order to excite a certain mode or a group of modes with unique optical properties. Diffractive and micro optics are highly effective for selectively coupling light to specific modes. Using micro optics, mode selective coupling can be achieved through several matching …

Discrete Nonlinear Wave Propagation In Kerr Nonlinear Media, Joachim Meier Jan 2004

Discrete Nonlinear Wave Propagation In Kerr Nonlinear Media, Joachim Meier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Discrete optical systems are a subgroup of periodic structures in which the evolution of a continuous electromagnetic field can be described by a discrete model. In this model, the total field is the sum of localized, discrete modes. Weakly coupled arrays of single mode channel waveguides have been known to fall into this class of systems since the late 1960's. Nonlinear discrete optics has received a considerable amount of interest in the last few years, triggered by the experimental realization of discrete solitons in a Kerr nonlinear AlGaAs waveguide array by H. Eisenberg and coworkers in 1998. In this work …

Adaptive Critic Neural Network-Based Object Grasping Control Using A Three-Finger Gripper, Gustavo Galan, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2004

Adaptive Critic Neural Network-Based Object Grasping Control Using A Three-Finger Gripper, Gustavo Galan, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Grasping of objects has been a challenging task for robots. The complex grasping task can be defined as object contact control and manipulation subtasks. In this paper, object contact control subtask is defined as the ability to follow a trajectory accurately by the fingers of a gripper. The object manipulation subtask is defined in terms of maintaining a predefined applied force by the fingers on the object. A sophisticated controller is necessary since the process of grasping an object without a priori knowledge of the object's size, texture, softness, gripper, and contact dynamics is rather difficult. Moreover, the object has …

Measuring The Robustness Of A Resource Allocation, Shoukat Ali, A. A. Maciejewski, Howard Jay Siegel, Jong-Kook Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Parallel and distributed systems may operate in an environment that undergoes unpredictable changes causing certain system performance features to degrade. Such systems need robustness to guarantee limited degradation despite fluctuations in the behavior of its component parts or environment. This research investigates the robustness of an allocation of resources to tasks in parallel and distributed systems. The main contributions are 1) a mathematical description of a metric for the robustness of a resource allocation with respect to desired system performance features against multiple perturbations in multiple system and environmental conditions, and 2) a procedure for deriving a robustness metric for …

An Intelligent Dissolved Oxygen Microsensor System With Electrochemically Actuated Fluidics, Chang-Soo Kim, Jongwon Park, Xinbo He Jan 2004

An Intelligent Dissolved Oxygen Microsensor System With Electrochemically Actuated Fluidics, Chang-Soo Kim, Jongwon Park, Xinbo He

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new dissolved oxygen monitoring microsystem is proposed to achieve in situ intelligent self-calibration by using an electrochemically actuated fluidic system. The electrochemical actuation, based on water electrolysis, plays two critical roles in the proposed microsystem. First, the electrochemically generated gases serve as the calibrants for the in situ 2-point calibration/diagnosis procedure of the microsensor in a chip. Secondly, the electrochemical generation and collapse of gas bubbles provide the driving force of the bidirectional fluidic manipulation for sampling and dispensing of the sample solution. A microsystem including a dissolved oxygen microprobe, electrochemical actuators, and a fluidic structure are prepared by …

Analysis Of Chip-Level Emi Using Near-Field Magnetic Scanning, Xiaopeng Dong, Shaowei Deng, Todd H. Hubing, Daryl G. Beetner Jan 2004

Analysis Of Chip-Level Emi Using Near-Field Magnetic Scanning, Xiaopeng Dong, Shaowei Deng, Todd H. Hubing, Daryl G. Beetner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Integrated circuits (ICs) are often a significant source of radiated energy from electronic systems. Well designed ICs maintain good control of the currents that they generate. However, poorly designed ICs can drive high-frequency noise currents onto nominally low-frequency input and output pins. These currents can excite unintentional radiating structures on the printed circuit board, resulting in radiated emissions that are difficult or expensive to control. The paper discusses the use of magnetic near-field scanning techniques to measure the current distribution in IC packages. This technique is applied to common ICs, including a clock driver, a memory module and a field …

Temperature Considerations In Solar Arrays, Steve Eugene Watkins, Min-Jung Wu, E. J. Timpson Jan 2004

Temperature Considerations In Solar Arrays, Steve Eugene Watkins, Min-Jung Wu, E. J. Timpson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Temperature is an important consideration in the operation of photovoltaic (PV) arrays. In particular, daily and seasonal temperature variations are a limitation on the application of solar power to homes. At lower temperatures, PV systems produce more power. For higher temperatures, optimum operation requires modification of electrical load and removal of excess heat. Several technologies and approaches are available. To pursue this system optimization, PV cells were investigated at different temperatures. These investigations are compared with simulated theoretical results to draw more specific conclusions that can be applied to a solar house. A temperature reduction of 60⁰C improved the power …

Time Series Prediction With A Weighted Bidirectional Multi-Stream Extended Kalman Filter, Donald C. Wunsch, Xiao Hu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes the use of a multi-stream extended Kalman filter (EKF) to tackle the IJCNN 2004 challenge problem - time series prediction on CATS benchmark. A weighted bidirectional approach was adopted in the experiments to incorporate the forward and backward predictions of the time series. EKF is a practical, general approach to neural networks training. It consists of the following: 1) gradient calculation by backpropagation through time (BPTT); 2) weight updates based on the extended Kalman filter; and 3) data presentation using multi-stream mechanics.

Using Near-Field Scanning To Predict Radiated Fields, Jin Shi, Michael A. Cracraft, Jianmin Zhang, Richard E. Dubroff, Kevin P. Slattery, Masahiro Yamaguchi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Near-field scanning has often been used to measure and characterize magnetic fields surrounding individual integrated circuits (IC) and high speed digital electronic circuits. The paper describes the use of near-field scanning data, performed in a typical laboratory bench top environment, to predict radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) in a typical product environment. The product environment may include enclosures and apertures. The approach begins by acquiring sufficient near-field scanning data to allow representation of an unintentional radiating source by an equivalent surface current distribution. The equivalent current distribution is used as a source in numerical full wave modeling. The agreement between direct …

A Unique Fault-Tolerant Design For Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverter, Xiaomin Kou, Keith Corzine, Yakov L. Familiant Jan 2004

A Unique Fault-Tolerant Design For Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverter, Xiaomin Kou, Keith Corzine, Yakov L. Familiant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a unique design for flying capacitor type multilevel inverters with fault-tolerant features. When a single-switch fault per phase occurs, the new design can still provide the same number of converting levels by shorting the fault power semiconductors and reconfiguring the gate controls. The most attractive point of the proposed design is that it can undertake the single-switch fault per phase without sacrificing power converting quality. Future more, if multiple faults occur in different phases and each phase have only one fault switch, the proposed design can still conditionally provide consistent voltage converting levels. This paper will also …

A Discrete-Time Model For Triply Selective Mimo Rayleigh Fading Channels, Chengshan Xiao, Jingxian Wu, Sang-Yick Leong, Y. Rosa Zheng, Khaled Ben Letaief Jan 2004

A Discrete-Time Model For Triply Selective Mimo Rayleigh Fading Channels, Chengshan Xiao, Jingxian Wu, Sang-Yick Leong, Y. Rosa Zheng, Khaled Ben Letaief

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A statistical discrete-time model is proposed for simulating wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels which are triply selective due to angle spread, Doppler spread, and delay spread. The new discrete-time MIMO channel model includes the combined effects of the transmit filter, physical MIMO multipath channel fading, and receive filter, and it has the same sampling period as that of the MIMO receiver. This leads to very efficient simulation of physical continuous-time MIMO channels. A new method is also presented to efficiently generate the MIMO channel stochastic coefficients. The statistical accuracy of the discrete-time MIMO channel model is rigorously verified through …

A Multiple Principal Components Based Adaptive Filter, Steven L. Grant Jan 2004

A Multiple Principal Components Based Adaptive Filter, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Proportionate normalized least mean squares (PNLMS) is an adaptive filter that has been shown to provide exceptionally fast convergence and tracking when the underlying system parameters are sparse. A good example of such a system is a network echo canceller. Principal components based PNLMS (PCP) extends this fast convergence property to certain nonsparse systems by applying PNLMS while using the principal components of the underlying system as basis vectors. An acoustic echo canceller is a possible example of this type of nonsparse system. Simulations of acoustic echo paths and cancellers indicate that PCP converges and tracks much faster than the …

Adaptive Load Frequency Control Of Nigerian Hydrothermal System Using Unsupervised And Supervised Learning Neural Networks, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, U. O. Aliyu, S. Y. Musa

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents a novel load frequency control design approach for a two-area power system that relies on unsupervised and supervised learning neural network structure. Central to this approach is the prediction of the load disturbance of each area at every minute interval that is uniquely assigned to a cluster via unsupervised learning process. The controller feedback gains corresponding to each cluster center are determined using modal control technique. Thereafter, supervised learning neural network (SLNN) is employed to learn the mapping between each cluster center and its feedback gains. A real time load disturbance in either or both areas activates …

Adaptive Force-Balancing Control Of Mems Gyroscope With Actuator Limits, Mohammed Hameed, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2004

Adaptive Force-Balancing Control Of Mems Gyroscope With Actuator Limits, Mohammed Hameed, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents an adaptive force-balancing control (AFBC) scheme with actuator limits for a MEMS Z-axis gyroscope. The purpose of the adaptive force-balancing control is to identify major fabrication imperfections so that they are properly compensated unlike the case of conventional force-balancing controlled gyroscope. The proposed AFBC scheme controls the vibratory modes of the proof mass while ensuring that the control input satisfies the magnitude constraints and the performance of the gyroscope is enhanced in the presence of fabrication uncertainties. Consequently, commonly reported problems of MEMS gyroscope such as quadrature compensation, drive and sense axes frequency tuning are not needed …

Boost Integrated Push-Pull Rectifier With Power Factor Correction And Output Voltage Regulation Using A New Digital Control Technique, Zhong Nie, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Ali Emadi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An integrated converter is a synthesized converter based on the overall system integration, which is simplified by the system objective and can implement the system functions similar to the discrete converters. An integrated converter consists of converter sets; each converter set has a special function defined by the designer. A family of DC/DC Boost based integrated rectifiers with two active switches can be derived by the integration concept. In this paper, Boost + Push-Pull integrated converter is introduced and derived. To regulate the output voltage and shape the input current, a new simple digital control method is applied. In contrast …
