Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Explicit elastic solutions are given for an edge-cracked orthotropic bimaterial butt joint under antiplane singularity of a screw dislocation and a line-force. During the procedure, conformal mapping and known dislocation solution are utilized for constructing the fundamental solution to the present problem. Stress intensity factor (SIF) and energy release rate (ERR) of the edge-cracked butt joint are given in closed-form. In limiting cases, results provided in this work cover those in literature.

Exergy Use In Bioenergetics, Yaşar Demirel Nov 2004

Exergy Use In Bioenergetics, Yaşar Demirel

Papers in Analytical Chemistry

Every developed and adapted biological system extracts useful energy from outside, converts, stores it, and uses for muscular contraction, substrate transport, protein synthesis, and other energy utilizing processes. This energy management in a living cell is called the bioenergetics, and the useful energy is the exergy, which is destroyed in every irreversible process because of the entropy production. The converted exergy is the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) produced through the oxidative phosphorylation coupled to respiration in which the exergy originates from oxidation of reducing equivalents of nutrients. A living cell uses the ATP for all the energy demanding activities; it has …

Corrective Maintenance Optimization In An Air Force, Hoong Chuin Lau, K. Y. Neo, W. C. Wan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Successful military mission planning and execution depend critically on equipment serviceability and resupply. Due to the stochastic nature of demands, the forecast of optimal spares and resources needed to guarantee the level of serviceability is a complex problem, especially in a multi-echelon setting. In this paper, we propose a decision-support concept and software tool known as Corrective Maintenance Optimizer (CMO) that helps to optimize system availability, through proper allocation of spare parts, both strategically and operationally.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study a repairable item inventory system under limited repair capacity and nonstationary Poisson demands, motivated by corrective maintenance of military equipment. Our goal is to minimize the cost of both spare and repair resource allocation. We propose an efficient analytical model that combines optimization modeling and queuing theory.

A Periodic-Review Inventory Model With Application To The Continuous-Review Obsolescence Problem, Yuyue Song, Hoong Chuin Lau Nov 2004

A Periodic-Review Inventory Model With Application To The Continuous-Review Obsolescence Problem, Yuyue Song, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper we consider a stochastic-demand periodic-review inventory model with sudden obsolescence. We characterize the structure of the optimal policy and propose a dynamic programming algorithm for computing its parameters. We then utilize this algorithm to approximate the solution to the continuous-review sudden obsolescence problem with general obsolescence distribution. We prove convergence of our approximation scheme, and demonstrate it numerically against known closed-form solutions of special cases.

Job Scheduling With Unfixed Availability Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, C. Zhang Nov 2004

Job Scheduling With Unfixed Availability Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, C. Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Standard scheduling theory assumes that all machines are continuously available throughout the planning horizon. In many manufacturing and service management situations however, machines need to be maintained periodically to prevent malfunctions. During the maintenance period, a machine is not available for processing jobs. Hence, a more realistic scheduling model should take into account machine maintenance activities. In this paper, we study the problem of job scheduling with unfixed availability constraints on a single machine. We first propose a preliminary classification for the scheduling problem with unfixed availability constraints based on maintenance constraints, job characteristics and objective function. We divide our …

Quantifying The Effects Of Aging On The Mechanical Properties Of Medical Grade Polycarbonate And Uv Cured Adhesives, Christopher James Lewis Oct 2004

Quantifying The Effects Of Aging On The Mechanical Properties Of Medical Grade Polycarbonate And Uv Cured Adhesives, Christopher James Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Advances in engineering polymer technology have created a generation of high strength-to-weight materials for medical applications, with virtually no adverse interactions with body fluids. Polycarbonate is a widely used engineering polymer, and is often used in connection with ultra-violet light (UV) cured adhesives. Because of the chemical complexity of polymers, little is known about their actual aging characteristics. By characterizing the effects of aging, storage environment, and sterilization on medical grade polycarbonate/adhesive system properties, more accurate failure predictions can be made. In this thesis, efforts to better understand the effects of accelerated aging on a medical grade polycarbonate and UV …

Phase Stability And Segregation In Alloy 22 Base Metal And Weldments, Jeffrey Lacombe, Shantanu A. Namjoshi, Paige Russel, Raymond E. Keeler, Amy J. Smiecinski Oct 2004

Phase Stability And Segregation In Alloy 22 Base Metal And Weldments, Jeffrey Lacombe, Shantanu A. Namjoshi, Paige Russel, Raymond E. Keeler, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

The current design of the waste disposal containers relies heavily on encasement in a multi-layered container, featuring a corrosion barrier of Alloy 22, a Ni-Cr-Mo-W based alloy with excellent corrosion resistance over a wide range of conditions. The fundamental concern from the perspective of the Yucca Mountain Project, however, is the inherent uncertainty in the (very) long-term stability of the base metal and welds. Should the properties of the selected materials change over the long service life of the waste packages, it is conceivable that the desired performance characteristics (such as corrosion reistance) will become compromised, leading to premature failure …

Multiple Description Coding Based On Multiple-Bitstream Wavelet Zero-Tree Image Compression, Daewon Song, Chang Wen Chen, Lei Cao Oct 2004

Multiple Description Coding Based On Multiple-Bitstream Wavelet Zero-Tree Image Compression, Daewon Song, Chang Wen Chen, Lei Cao

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Multiple description coding (MDC) is a well-known robust data compression algorithm designed to minimize the distortion caused by data loss in packet-based communication systems. Several MDC schemes for transmitting wavelet compressed images have been developed. However, these MDC schemes cannot be adopted for digital mobile wireless applications where both packet loss and bit error are present, because individual description in these MDC schemes usually does not have adequate error resilience capability to combat the bit error in transmission. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to achieve robust communication over error prone transmission channels with both packet loss and bit …

Layered Unequal Loss Protection For Image Transmission Over Packet Loss Channels With Delay Constraints, Jianfei Cai, Xiangjun Li, Chang Wen Chen Oct 2004

Layered Unequal Loss Protection For Image Transmission Over Packet Loss Channels With Delay Constraints, Jianfei Cai, Xiangjun Li, Chang Wen Chen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

In the case of high bit rate image transmission or having lots of packets, the FEC (forward error correction) encoding and decoding processes in the ULP (unequal loss protection) based schemes should be applied to individual packet groups instead of all the packets in order to avoid long processing delay. In this paper, we propose a layered ULP (L-ULP) scheme for fast and efficient FEC allocations among different packet groups and also within each packet group. The numerical results show that the proposed L-ULP scheme is quite promising for fast image transmission over packet loss networks.

Multiple Wavelet-Tree-Based Image Coding And Robust Transmission, Lei Cao, Chang Wen Chen Oct 2004

Multiple Wavelet-Tree-Based Image Coding And Robust Transmission, Lei Cao, Chang Wen Chen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present techniques based on multiple wavelet-tree coding for robust image transmission. The algorithm of set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) is a state-of-the-art technique for image compression. This variable length coding (VLC) technique, however, is extremely sensitive to channel errors. To improve the error resilience capability and in the meantime to keep the high source coding efficiency through VLC, we propose to encode each wavelet tree or a group of wavelet trees using SPIHT algorithm independently. Instead of encoding the entire image as one bitstream, multiple bitstreams are generated. Therefore, error propagation is limited within individual …

Joint Source-Channel Decoding For Mpeg-2 Video Transmission, Liuguo Yin, Weigang Chen, Jianhua Lu, Chang Wen Chen Oct 2004

Joint Source-Channel Decoding For Mpeg-2 Video Transmission, Liuguo Yin, Weigang Chen, Jianhua Lu, Chang Wen Chen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Joint source-channel coding schemes have been proven to be effective ways for reliable multimedia communications. In this paper, a joint source-channel decoding (JSCD) scheme that combines the hidden Markov source (HMS) estimation and low-density parity-check (LDPC) coding is proposed for the standard MPEG-2 video transmission. The LDPC code of the proposed scheme has a near-Shannon-limit error-correcting capability, while the HMS estimator may accurately extract the residual redundancy within the MPEG-2 video stream without any prior information. Furthermore, with a joint iterative decoding algorithm, the estimated source redundancy may be well exploited by the LDPC decoder, and the channel decoding feedback …

Multiple-Description Image Coding With Distributed Source Coding And Side Information, Min Wu, Anthony Vetro, Chang Wen Chen Oct 2004

Multiple-Description Image Coding With Distributed Source Coding And Side Information, Min Wu, Anthony Vetro, Chang Wen Chen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Multiple description coding (MDC) is a source coding technique that involves coding the source information into multiple descriptions. When these descriptions are transmitted over different channels in packet network or error-prone wireless environment, graceful degradation can be achieved even if part of descriptions are not received by the receiver. When MDC is applied to wavelet subband based image coding, it is possible to introduce correlation between the descriptions in each subband. In this paper, we consider using such a correlation as well as potentially error corrupted description as side information in the decoding to formulate the MDC decoding as a …

A Cad-Centric Approach To Cfd Analysis With Discrete Features, Matthew Lee King

Theses and Dissertations

During the conceptual design stage several concepts are generated, and a few are selected for detailed analyses. CAD models from conceptual design often follow the "over-the-wall" approach for downstream analyses such as FEA, CFD, heat transfer, and vibrations. A CAD-centric approach will be applied to the CAD-to-CFD process to help industry in an ongoing quest to shorten the design cycle time. The CAD-centric approach consists of using the CAD model as a source of data for downstream applications such as mesh generation, and CFD setup. The CAD model used in the CAD-centric approach contains the geometry to be analyzed and …

The Role Of Moral Philosophy In Promoting Academic Integrity Among Engineering Students, Brian K. Etter, Trevor S. Harding, Cynthia J. Finelli, Donald D. Carpenter Oct 2004

The Role Of Moral Philosophy In Promoting Academic Integrity Among Engineering Students, Brian K. Etter, Trevor S. Harding, Cynthia J. Finelli, Donald D. Carpenter

Materials Engineering

Academic dishonesty is nothing new, yet it is particularly disturbing to find among engineering students, whose professional lives need to be guided by the highest ethical standards. Moral philosophy may illuminate some of the conditions for recovering a sense of the ethical for engineering students. Classical moral philosophers held that people belong to communities in ways that inform their sense of obligation. Recognition of these communities would make concrete the engineer's responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of the public. A further difficulty is that the primary community that students know is simply that of their peers in school …

Work In Progress – Classical Ballet Structure And Practice Applied To Engineering Class Sessions, Blair London, Lisa Deyo Oct 2004

Work In Progress – Classical Ballet Structure And Practice Applied To Engineering Class Sessions, Blair London, Lisa Deyo

Materials Engineering

Classical ballet classes have a universal structure that fosters active in-class learning. This structure creates a safe environment for students to try, fail, be corrected, and succeed. Engineering classes lack a common structure; most learning in engineering occurs outside of class. Engineering classes could move toward adopting a similar structure to ballet to improve in-class learning and mirror engineering culture and practice. The paper describes aspects of ballet class structure and practices that work and how these can apply to engineering classes. A new engineering class session structure is presented following the ballet model where engineering students are motivated to …
