Stainless Steel Stub Columns Subject To Combined Bending And Axial Loading, M. Macdonald, J. Rhodes Nov 2004

Stainless Steel Stub Columns Subject To Combined Bending And Axial Loading, M. Macdonald, J. Rhodes

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Stainless steel exhibits highly non-linear behaviour, and in the case of short column structural members, this can lead to substantial conservatism in the prediction of load capacity by design codes due to their use of the 0.2% proof stress as an upper limit of capacity. This paper examines the behaviour of short stainless steel stub columns in which the material follows a Ramberg-Osgood type of stress-strain law. The column length is varied to examine the effects on the load capacity when the column is subjected to varying magnitudes of combined bending and axial compression loading. The loading is applied as …

Improved Signal Integrity In Ieee 1149.1 Boundary Scan Designs, Efren De Jesus Rangel Taboada

Theses and Dissertations

This work is an analysis of solutions to problems derived from inherent timing and signal integrity issues in the use and application of the IEEE 1149.1 Standard at the board level in conjunction with its test system. Setup or hold times violations may occur in a boundary scan chain using IEEE 1149.1 compliant devices. A practical study of the TDI-TDO scan data path has been conducted to show where problems may arise in relationship to a particular board topology and test system. This work points to differences between passing and failing scan path tests for problem characterization. Serial data flow …

Thermally Developing Electro-Osmotic Convection In Circular Microchannels, Spencer L. Broderick Nov 2004

Thermally Developing Electro-Osmotic Convection In Circular Microchannels, Spencer L. Broderick

Theses and Dissertations

Thermally developing, electro-osmotically generated flow has been analyzed for a circular microtube under imposed constant wall temperature (CWT) and constant wall heat flux (CHF) boundary conditions. Established by a voltage potential gradient along the length of the microtube, the hydrodynamics of such a flow dictate either a slug flow velocity profile (under conditions of large tube radius-to-Debye length ratio, a/lambda_d) or a family of electro-osmotic flow (EOF) velocity profiles that depend on a/lambda_d. The imposed voltage gradient results in Joule heating in the fluid with an associated volumetric source of energy. For this scenario coupled with a slug flow velocity …

Checking If There Exists A Monotonic Function That Is Consistent With The Measurements: An Efficient Algorithm, Kavitha Tupelly, Vladik Kreinovich, Karen Villaverde

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many problems in science and engineering ranging from astrophysics to geosciences to financial analysis, we know that a physical quantity y depends on the physical quantity x, i.e., y=f(x) for some function f(x), and we want to check whether this dependence is monotonic. Specifically, finitely many measurements of xi and yi=f(xi) have been made, and we want to check whether the results of these measurements are consistent with the monotonicity of f. An efficient parallelizable algorithm is known for solving this problem when the values xi are known precisely, while the values yi are known with interval uncertainty. In …

Probabilistic Approach To Trust: Ideas, Algorithms, And Simulations, Pattama Jaksurat, Eric A. Freudenthal, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2004

Probabilistic Approach To Trust: Ideas, Algorithms, And Simulations, Pattama Jaksurat, Eric A. Freudenthal, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In traditional security systems, for each task, we either trust an agent or we don't. If we trust an agent, we allow this agent full access to this particular task. This agent can usually allow his trusted sub-agents the same access, etc. If a trust management system only uses "trust" and "no trust" options, then a person should trust everyone in this potentially long chain. The problem is that trust is rarely a complete trust, there is a certain probability of distrust. So, when the chain becomes long, the probability of a security leak increases. It is desirable to keep …

Computing The Cube Of An Interval Matrix Is Np-Hard, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Guenter Mayer, Hung T. Nguyen Nov 2004

Computing The Cube Of An Interval Matrix Is Np-Hard, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Guenter Mayer, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical applications, we are interested in computing the product of given matrices and/or a power of a given matrix. In some cases, the initial matrices are only known with interval uncertainty. It turns out that under this uncertainty, there is a principal difference between the product of two matrices and the product of three (or more) matrices:

on the one hand, it is more or less known that the problems of computing the exact range for the product of two matrices -- and for the square of a matrix -- are computationally feasible;

on the other hand, we …

Foundations Of Statistical Processing Of Set-Valued Data: Towards Efficient Algorithms, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Due to measurement uncertainty, often, instead of the actual values xi of the measured quantities, we only know the intervals [Xi]=[Xi-Di,Xi+Di], where Xi is the measured value and Di is the upper bound on the measurement error (provided, e.g., by the manufacturer of the measuring instrument). These intervals can be viewed as random intervals, i.e., as samples from the interval-valued random variable. In such situations, instead of the exact value of a sample statistic such as covariance C(x,y), we can only have an interval [C](x,y) of possible values of this statistic.

In this paper, we extend the foundations of traditional …

Improvement Of Parameter Estimation For Non-Linear Hysteretic Systems With Slip By A Fast Bayesian Bootstrap Filter, S. J. Li, Yoshiyuki Suzuki, Mohammad N. Noori Nov 2004

Improvement Of Parameter Estimation For Non-Linear Hysteretic Systems With Slip By A Fast Bayesian Bootstrap Filter, S. J. Li, Yoshiyuki Suzuki, Mohammad N. Noori

Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship

Modeling and identification of non-linear hysteretic systems are widely encountered in the structural dynamics field, especially for the hysteresis with slip. A model, called SL model, which can describe the pinching of most practical hysteresis loops perfectly was proposed by Baber and Noori (J. Eng. Mech. 111 (1985) 1010). A method of estimating the parameters of SL model on the basis of input–output data based on bootstrap filter was proposed by the writers. Bootstrap filter is a filtering method based on Bayesian state estimation and Monte Carlo method, which has the great advantage of being able to handle any functional …

Screw Dislocation Interacting With Interfacial Edge-Cracks In Piezoelectric Bimaterial Strips, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Bradley D. Rinschen Nov 2004

Screw Dislocation Interacting With Interfacial Edge-Cracks In Piezoelectric Bimaterial Strips, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Bradley D. Rinschen

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This paper is concerned with the interaction between an interfacial edge-crack and a screw dislocation under out-of-plane mechanical and in-plane electric loading in a piezoelectric bimaterial strip. In addition to a discontinuous electric potential across the slip plane, the dislocation is subjected to a line-force and a line-charge at the core. Under the framework of linear piezoelectricity, the out-of-plane displacement and in-plane electric potentials are constructed in closed-form by means of conformal mapping technique and the known solution for screw dislocation in cracked piezoelectric bimaterial. The intensity factors (IFs) and energy release rate (ERR) are derived explicitly.

Logistics Network Design With Differentiated Delivery Lead Time: A Chemical Industry Case Study, Michelle Lee Fong Cheong, Rohit Bhatnagar, Stephen C. Graves Nov 2004

Logistics Network Design With Differentiated Delivery Lead Time: A Chemical Industry Case Study, Michelle Lee Fong Cheong, Rohit Bhatnagar, Stephen C. Graves

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most logistics network design models assume exogenous customer demand that is independent of the service time or level. This paper examines the benefits of segmenting demand according to lead-time sensitivity of customers. To capture lead-time sensitivity in the network design model, we use a facility grouping method to ensure that the different demand classes are satisfied on time. In addition, we perform a series of computational experiments to develop a set of managerial insights for the network design decision making process.

Optimization Of Batch Reactions In Series With Uncertainty, Keith G. Tomazi Nov 2004

Optimization Of Batch Reactions In Series With Uncertainty, Keith G. Tomazi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Certain types of chemical reactions, such as the global deprotection of a polypeptide, are extremely complex. As a result, it may be very difficult or expensive to develop accurate models of these chemical reactions. Without a satisfactory kinetic model for the reaction, it is difficult to develop an optimum operating policy that will maximize the profit. Stochastic optimization is applied in this work to an example process step to obtain the optimum reaction temperature and reaction time. In the case of the "here and now" problem, the optimal conditions are a lower reaction temperature and a longer reaction time than …

An electrolyte supported single chamber solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) module consisting of two cells has been proposed. The module consists of one Sm-doped CeO2 (SDC) electrolyte substrate (0.5 mm thick with the size of 5 3 10 mm), two Ni-SDC anodes on one side, and two SDC-(La,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3 cathodes on the other side. Two modules with different electrode areas were prepared and tested using an air-propane mixture. The electrode area had a strong influence on the performance of the module. It was shown that the two-cell module generated 1.5 V open-circuit voltage and about 17 mW maximum power …

Improved Quantification Of Small Objects In Near-Infrared Diffuse Optical Tomography, Subhadra Srinivasan, Brian W. Pogue, Hamid Dehghani, Shudong Jiang, Xiaomei Song, Keith D. Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Diffuse optical tomography allows quantification of hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, and water in tissue, and the fidelity in this quantification is dependent on the accuracy of optical properties determined during image reconstruction. In this study, a three-step algorithm is proposed and validated that uses the standard Newton minimization with Levenberg-Marquardt regularization as the first step. The second step is a modification to the existing algorithm using a two-parameter regularization to allow lower damping in a region of interest as compared to background. This second stage allows the recovery of the actual size of an inclusion. A region-based reconstruction is the final …

Integrated Coverage And Connectivity Configuration For Energy Conservation In Sensor Networks, Guoliang Xing, Xiaorui Wang, Yuanfang Zhang, Chenyang Lu, Robert Pless, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

An effective approach for energy conservation in wireless sensor networks is scheduling sleep intervals for extraneous nodes, while the remaining nodes stay active to provide continuous service. For the sensor network to operate successfully, the active nodes must maintain both sensing coverage and network connectivity. Fur-thermore, the network must be able to configure itself to any feasible degrees of coverage and connectivity in order to support different applications and environments with diverse requirements. This paper presents the design and analysis of novel protocols that can dynamically configure a network to achieve guaranteed degrees of coverage and connectivity. This work differs …

Rapid Field Evaluation Of Drip And Microspray Distribution Uniformity, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

The Cal Poly ITRC irrigation evaluation programs have been widely used to assess the global distribution uniformity (DU) of drip and microsprayer irrigation systems. The field procedures and formulas used in the program are presented in this paper. The system DU is estimated by mathematically combining the component DU values. DU components include pressure differences, "other causes" (such as manufacturing variation, plugging, and wear), unequal drainage, and unequal application rates. Results are presented from evaluations by several entities, including Cal Poly ITRC. Cal Poly evaluations of 329 fields provided an average DUlq of 0.85 for drip and 0.80 for …

Local Model Network Application In Control, Ruiyao Gao Nov 2004

Local Model Network Application In Control, Ruiyao Gao

Doctoral

The local model (LM) network is considered for the control of complex nonlinear systems. Both controller design and system analysis techniques are investigated for the Purpose of the development of an overall global controller with guaranteed stability and performance, based on the control methods and theories well developed for linear systems. In particular, the influence of the offset term of affine LM networks on the performance and stability of closed-loop systems is investigated. Assuming the system changes ‘slowly’ enough, an integrator can be utilised in the controller design by considering the offset term as ‘constant’. Gain-scheduled local controller (LC) networks …

Parametric Investigation Of Laser Nanoimprinting Of Hemispherical Cavity Arrays, L. P. Li, Yongfeng Lu, D. W. Doerr, Dennis R. Alexander, X. Y. Chen

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A monolayer of self-assembled silica particles can be imprinted into a silicon substrate by laser irradiation (KrF excimer laser, λ=248 nm). Periodical hemispherical cavities can be therefore created on the substrate surface. The influences of various particle sizes and laser fluence were investigated. In addition, preheating of the substrate significantly improves the performance. One-dimensional thermal calculation was employed to understand the thermal effect in this process. Three-dimensional optical simulation provided an accurate insight into the light intensity enhancement. Raman spectroscopy was used to examine the stress induced by the laser imprinting process resided in the cavity structures.
