Assigning Projects To Project Managers In A Multiple-Project Management Environment: A Pilot Study Of A Decision Support Model, Peerasit Patanakul, Dragan Milošević, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Project assignment is considered one of the most critical project decisions since it influences the performance of projects, and eventually the performance of the organization. Despite its importance, the literature reveals two major gaps on project assignment criteria and methodology. To close these gaps, this study proposes an additional set of project assignment criteria and a systematic methodology for project assignments (DSM). By using the concepts of these case study research combined with a literature review, the important potential criteria for project assignments are identified. These criteria are used in conjunction with the concepts of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) …

Neuroidentification Of System Parameters For The Shunt & Series Branch Control Of Upfc, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Radha P. Kalyani, Mariesa Crow Jul 2003

Neuroidentification Of System Parameters For The Shunt & Series Branch Control Of Upfc, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Radha P. Kalyani, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The crucial factor affecting the modern power systems today is load flow control. The unified power flow controller (UPFC) forms an affective means for controlling the power flow. The UPFC consists of shunt and series inverters which are conventionally controlled using linear controllers. This paper presents the design of neuroidentifiers that identify the system parameters that determine the UPFC controller outputs one-time step ahead thus, making the pathway for the design of adaptive neurocontrollers. Two neuroidentifiers are used for identifying the nonlinear dynamics of power system and UPFC, one neuroidentifier for the shunt inverter and the other for the series …

Automatic Classification Of African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Follicular And Luteal Rumbles, Michael T. Johnson, Patrick J. Clemins Jul 2003

Automatic Classification Of African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Follicular And Luteal Rumbles, Michael T. Johnson, Patrick J. Clemins

Dr. Dolittle Project: A Framework for Classification and Understanding of Animal Vocalizations

Recent research in African elephant vocalizations has shown that there is evidence for acoustic differences in the rumbles of females based on the phase of their estrous cycle (1). One reason for these differences might be to attract a male for reproductive purposes. Since rumbles have a fundamental frequency near 10Hz, they attenuate slowly and can be heard over a distance of several kilometers. This research exploits differences in the rumbles to create an automatic classification system that can determine whether a female rumble was made during the luteal or follicular phase of the ovulatory cycle. This system could be …

An Adaptive Neural Network Identifier For Effective Control Of A Static Compensator Connected To A Power System, Salman Mohagheghi, Jung-Wook Park, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Mariesa Crow, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel method for nonlinear identification of a static compensator connected to a power system using continually online trained (COT) artificial neural networks (ANNs) is presented in this paper. The identifier is successfully trained online to track the dynamics of the power network without any need for offline data and can be used in designing an adaptive neurocontroller for a static compensator connected to such system.

Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Stability Across A Compression Corner, Hongwu Zhao Jul 2003

Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Stability Across A Compression Corner, Hongwu Zhao

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Stability of a hypersonic boundary-layer over a compression corner was investigated numerically. The three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillating (ArENO) shock capturing scheme to study the shock wave and boundary-layer interactions. The boundary-layer stability was studied in three distinct regions: upstream of the separation region, inside the separation region and downstream of the separation region. After the mean flow field was computed, linear stability theory was employed to predict the unstable disturbance modes in different flow regions and also to find the most amplified disturbance frequency across the compression corner. Gortler instability computations were …

Optimization-Based Architecture For Managing Complex Integrated Product Development Projects, Hisham Mohamed El-Sayed Abdelsalam Jul 2003

Optimization-Based Architecture For Managing Complex Integrated Product Development Projects, Hisham Mohamed El-Sayed Abdelsalam

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

By the mid-1990's, the importance of early introduction of new products to both market share and profitability became fully understood. Thus, reducing product time-to-market became an essential requirement for continuous competition. Integrated Product Development (IPD) is a holistic approach that helps to overcome problems that arise in a complex product development project. IPD emphasis is to provide a framework for an effective planning and managing of engineering projects. Coupled with the fact that about 70% of the life cycle cost of a product is committed at early design phases, the motivation for developing and implementing more effective methodologies for managing …

Piezoelectric Sensor In The Application Of Rolling Bearing Health Monitoring, Yinyin Liu Jul 2003

Piezoelectric Sensor In The Application Of Rolling Bearing Health Monitoring, Yinyin Liu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A condition-based monitoring concept for rolling element bearings in machinery utilizing a piezoelectric load sensor is investigated in this thesis. The radially polarized cylindrical piezoelectric sensor is modeled in its specific coordinates. The sensor registers the stress occurring in all directions around it. The sensor's behavior due to several typical loads is analyzed. Based on the induced stresses in the sensor, the sensor's output as an electric charge can be obtained using the method of integration.

Considering both the normal and tangential loads distributed on the rolling beating's roller-raceway contact surface, the dynamic stress distribution in the outer raceway was …

Faculty Publications

A multiband internal antenna is introduced. The antenna consists of a driven meander-line element and two parasitic elements. The design is particularly unique since it supports the third generation mobile phone handsets where multiband operation is greatly desired. The proposed antenna operates effectively in the aMPS 800 (824-894 MHz), GSM 900 (880-960 MHz), and GSM 1900 (1850-1990 MHz) bands within 2.5:1 (voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR). Detail design criteria with respect to geometrical parameter variation are given. Experimental data (VSWR and pattern) obtained from a laboratory prototype are also presented.

Progress In Spectroscopic Ellipsometry: Applications From Vacuum Ultraviolet To Infrared, James N. Hilfiker, Corey L. Bungay, Ron A. Synowicki, Thomas E. Tiwald, Craig M. Herzinger, Blaine Johs, Greg K. Pribil, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) is a noncontact and nondestructive optical technique for thin film characterization. In the past 10 yr, it has migrated from the research laboratory into the semiconductor, data storage, display, communication, and optical coating industries. The wide acceptance of SE is a result of its flexibility to measure most material types: dielectrics, semiconductors, metals, superconductors, polymers, biological coatings, and even multilayers of these materials. Measurement of anisotropic materials has also made huge strides in recent years. Traditional SE measurements cover the ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared wavelengths. This spectral range is now acquired within seconds with high accuracy …

Comment On: 'Depolarization Corrections To The Coercive Field In Thin-Film Ferroelectrics', Stephen Ducharme, Vladimir Fridkin Jul 2003

Comment On: 'Depolarization Corrections To The Coercive Field In Thin-Film Ferroelectrics', Stephen Ducharme, Vladimir Fridkin

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The Letter by Dawber et al. [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 15 L393 (2003)] notes that incomplete screening in the electrodes of a ferroelectric capacitor can result in an underestimate for the true coercive field in films of nanometer thickness. We show that their estimate of the magnitude of this correction it too large in the case of ferroelectric copolymer Langmuir- Blodgett films and, as a result, invalidates the claim that finite-size scaling of the ferroelectric coercive field is evident in films thinner than 15 nm.

Evolved Reversible Cascades Realized On The Cam-Brain Machine (Cbm), Andrzej Buller, Marek Perkowski Jul 2003

Evolved Reversible Cascades Realized On The Cam-Brain Machine (Cbm), Andrzej Buller, Marek Perkowski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents a new approach to reversible cascade evolution based on a 3D cellular automaton. As a research platform we used the ATR's CAMBrain Machine (CBM). Reversible circuits are investigated because they are expected to dissipate much less energy than their irreversible counterparts. One day they will be implemented as nano-scale 3-dimensional chips. A circuit is reversible if the number of its inputs equals the number of its outputs and there is a one-to-one mapping between spaces of input vectors and output vectors. This paper provides: (1) a brief introduction to reversible logic concentrating on definitions and properties of …

Applicability Of Risk-Based Management And The Need For Risk-Based Economic Decision Analysis At Hazardous Waste Contaminated Sites, I. Khadam, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi Jul 2003

Applicability Of Risk-Based Management And The Need For Risk-Based Economic Decision Analysis At Hazardous Waste Contaminated Sites, I. Khadam, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Decision analysis in subsurface contamination management is generally carried out through a traditional engineering economic viewpoint. However, new advances in human health risk assessment, namely, the probabilistic risk assessment, and the growing awareness of the importance of soft data in the decision-making process, require decision analysis methodologies that are capable of accommodating non-technical and politically biased qualitative information. In this work, we discuss the major limitations of the currently practiced decision analysis framework, which evolves around the definition of risk and cost of risk, and its poor ability to communicate risk-related information. A demonstration using a numerical example was conducted …

Diagnostics Of Eccentricities And Bar/End-Ring Connector Breakages In Polyphase Induction Motors Through A Combination Of Time-Series Data Mining And Time-Stepping Coupled Fe-State Space Techniques, John F. Bangura, Richard J. Povinelli, Nabeel Demerdash, Ronald H. Brown

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper develops the foundations of a technique for detection and categorization of dynamic/static eccentricities and bar/end-ring connector breakages in squirrel-cage induction motors that is not based on the traditional Fourier transform frequency-domain spectral analysis concepts. Hence, this approach can distinguish between the "fault signatures" of each of the following faults: eccentricities, broken bars, and broken end-ring connectors in such induction motors. Furthermore, the techniques presented here can extensively and economically predict and characterize faults from the induction machine adjustable-speed drive design data without the need to have had actual fault data from field experience. This is done through the …

Study Of Geometric Effects On Local Corrosion Rates For Lbe Loop, Chao Wu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Corrosion is an extremely important issue in nuclear cooling system applications. Many scientific and engineering efforts have been contributed to the research of finding an ideal material, which has resistance to corrosive Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE). A Delta Loop was designed and constructed in Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) to obtain the experimental data. This loop is a multi-section closed system that differs in diameter from one part to another. As a result, an intensive study on the geometry effect is hence necessary and valuable. In this thesis, this problem was simulated by commercial software STAR-CD. Results provide a good …

Photonic Crystals: Modeling And Simulation, Shangping Guo Jul 2003

Photonic Crystals: Modeling And Simulation, Shangping Guo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Photonic crystals are periodic electromagnetic media in optical wavelength scale. They possess photonic band gaps (PBGs) that inhibit the existence of light within the crystals in certain wavelength range. Such band gaps produce many interesting optical phenomena. In this dissertation, the frequency (plane wave method, PWM) and time domain (finite difference time domain method, FDTD) methods are developed for their modeling and simulation.

The theory and algorithm of plane wave method are studied in detail and implemented in a unique and efficient approach. PWM is used to obtain the gap and mode information of ideal and defective photonic crystals. Several …

Diode Laser Crystallization Of Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon Thin Films For Solar Cell Applications, Brian A. Eaton

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The research objectives were to prove the crystallization of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films using a diode laser operating at an 805 nm wavelength and to provide morphology trends in laser crystallized samples. This work was primarily intended for solar cell applications.

One industry goal was to produce a high-efficiency and low-cost solar cell capable of competing economically with other energy sources at large scale in the world market. Excimer laser crystallization was one very promising technique. However, two important problems still hindered economic competition. This research addressed the problems associated with excimer laser crystallization by utilizing a diode …

A Numerical Analysis Of A Non-Porous, Flexible Upper Airfoil Surface, Asao Omura Jul 2003

A Numerical Analysis Of A Non-Porous, Flexible Upper Airfoil Surface, Asao Omura

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The aerodynamic behavior of the early Wright brothers' airfoils is an important element of the history of aeronautics. Their fabric-covered wings were not constrained to maintain the airfoil shape of their wooden rib substructures and therefore differences in performance between rigid and flexible Wright airfoil shapes can be expected. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a systematic numerical approach that allows an assessment of the influence of the fabric on the overall aerodynamic behavior of the Wright Model B airfoil. The Model B airfoil was chosen because it is the earliest "production" airfoil and has sufficient documentation to …

Nonlinear Response And Fatigue Estimation Of Aerospace Curved Surface Panels To Acoustic And Thermal Loads, Adam Przekop Jul 2003

Nonlinear Response And Fatigue Estimation Of Aerospace Curved Surface Panels To Acoustic And Thermal Loads, Adam Przekop

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This work presents a finite element modal formulation for large amplitude free vibration of arbitrary laminated composite shallow shells. The system equations of motion are formulated first in the physical structural-node degrees of freedom (DOF). Then, the system is transformed into general Duffing-type modal equations with modal amplitudes of coupled linear bending-inplane modes. The linear bending-inplane coupling is due to the shell curvature as well as unsymmetric lamination stacking. Multiple modes, inplane inertia, and the first-order transverse shear deformation for composites are considered in the formulation. A triangular shallow shell finite element is developed from an extension of the triangular …

Information System Product Development By Integration Of Kano's Customer Satisfaction Model With Quality Function Deployment, Afife Yesim Sireli Jul 2003

Information System Product Development By Integration Of Kano's Customer Satisfaction Model With Quality Function Deployment, Afife Yesim Sireli

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Product development of complex, innovative information technology related systems presents difficult challenges for technology managers, and new product failures are a significant problem. The main reason for this is insufficient decision-making due to the lack of a customer-oriented product development process in the information system (IS) companies, which is often related to deficiencies in cooperation between R&D and marketing departments. Integrating consumer requirements into the product design phase is an important factor for improving market success. Therefore, a product development decision model is needed for the managers of information system companies to make more accurate decisions about the characteristics of …

A Generic Object-Oriented Tabu Search Framework, Hoong Chuin Lau Jul 2003

A Generic Object-Oriented Tabu Search Framework, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Presently, most tabu search designers devise their applications without considering the potential of design and code reuse, which consequently prolong the development of subsequent applications. In this paper, we propose a software solution known as Tabu Search Framework (TSF), which is a generic C++ software framework for tabu search implementation. The framework excels in code recycling through the use of a welldesigned set of generic abstract classes that clearly define their collaborative roles in the algorithm. Additionally, the framework incorporates a centralized process and control mechanism that enhances the search with intelligence. This results in a generic framework that is …

Neodymium Oxide Doped Melt Textured Yba2cu3o7-X Single Crystals, Fatih Dogan, Stephen W. Sofie, William C. Hicks, Michael Strasik, Kevin E. Mccrary, Arthur C. Day

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Processing, microstructure and property relationships in neodymium oxide doped high temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x were investigated. It has been observed that a small amount (0.25–1 mol%) of Nd2O3 results in the formation of nanosized secondary phases which may have a significant effect on the superconducting properties of melt textured Y123 single crystals. It was further observed that addition of Nd2O3 greater than 1 mol% leads to multiple nucleation during solidification of Y123 and results in polycrystalline samples. Melt textured single crystals of Y123 with 1 mol% were successfully grown and …
