Model State Land Use Legislation For New England, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service Jul 2003

Model State Land Use Legislation For New England, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service

Legislation

Sprawl is neither the ordained nor the inevitable outcome upon the New England landscape. A coordinated response to sprawl by the public and private sectors is possible, and could dramatically improve land use patterns and reduce the cost of local government. For the New England states, such a response would include, among other elements, legislation to eliminate existing gaps in the land use laws of each state – gaps that presently encourage or sanction sprawling development. It would also include incentives for municipalities to think beyond their borders and to act with greater efficiency and effect. It is the purpose …

Computational Challenges In High Angle Of Attack Flow Prediction, Russell M. Cummings, James R. Forsythe, Scott A. Morton, Kyle D. Squires Jul 2003

Computational Challenges In High Angle Of Attack Flow Prediction, Russell M. Cummings, James R. Forsythe, Scott A. Morton, Kyle D. Squires

Aerospace Engineering

Aircraft aerodynamics have been predicted using computational fluid dynamics for a number of years. While viscous flow computations for cruise conditions have become commonplace, the non-linear effects that take place at high angles of attack are much more difficult to predict. A variety of difficulties arise when performing these computations, including challenges in properly modeling turbulence and transition for vortical and massively separated flows, the need to use appropriate numerical algorithms if flow asymmetry is possible, and the difficulties in creating grids that allow for accurate simulation of the flowfield. These issues are addressed and recommendations are made for further …

Tensile Characterization Of Frp Rods For Reinforced Concrete Structures, F. Micelli, Antonio Nanni

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The application of FRP rods as an internal or external reinforcement in new or damaged concrete structures is based on the development of design equations that take into account the mechanical properties of FRP material systems. the measurement of mechanical characteristics of FRP requires a special anchoring and protocol, since it is well known that these characteristics depend on the direction and content of fibers. in this study, an effective tensile test method is described for the mechanical characterization of FRP rods. Twelve types of glass and carbon FRP specimens with different sizes and surface characteristics were tested to validate …

Moving Screw Dislocations In Piezoelectric Bimaterials, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Wen-Sheng Zou Jul 2003

Moving Screw Dislocations In Piezoelectric Bimaterials, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Wen-Sheng Zou

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

An explicit solution for a moving screw dislocation in a piezoelectric bimaterial is given by means of complex variables. The electroelastic fields and forces acting on the moving dislocation are obtained in closed form. As special cases, solutions for a moving screw dislocation in a piezoelectric half-plane with a free or rigid surface are obtained explicitly.

Computational Complexity And Feasibility Of Data Processing And Interval Computations, With Extension To Cases When We Have Partial Information About Probabilities, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre Jul 2003

Computational Complexity And Feasibility Of Data Processing And Interval Computations, With Extension To Cases When We Have Partial Information About Probabilities, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, we are interested in the value of a physical quantity y that is difficult or impossible to measure directly. To estimate y, we find some easier-to-measure quantities x1,...,xn which are related to y by a known relation y=f(x1,...,xn). Measurements are never 100% accurate; hence, the measured values Xi are different from xi, and the resulting estimate Y=f(X1,...,Xn) is different from the desired value y=f(x1,...,xn). How different?

Traditional engineering to error estimation in data processing assumes that we know the probabilities of different measurement error dxi=Xi-xi. …

Eliminating Duplicates Under Interval And Fuzzy Uncertainty: An Asymptotically Optimal Algorithm And Its Geospatial Applications, Roberto Torres, George R. Keller, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre Jul 2003

Eliminating Duplicates Under Interval And Fuzzy Uncertainty: An Asymptotically Optimal Algorithm And Its Geospatial Applications, Roberto Torres, George R. Keller, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Geospatial databases generally consist of measurements related to points (or pixels in the case of raster data), lines, and polygons. In recent years, the size and complexity of these databases have increased significantly and they often contain duplicate records, i.e., two or more close records representing the same measurement result. In this paper, we address the problem of detecting duplicates in a database consisting of point measurements. As a test case, we use a database of measurements of anomalies in the Earth's gravity field that we have compiled. In this paper, we show that a natural duplicate deletion algorithm requires …

Investigating The Effects Of The Mission Status Graphics Polar Star Display On Failure Detection Time And Situation Awareness For Mission And System Monitoring In General Aviation Aircraft, Anthony P. Bartolone Jul 2003

Investigating The Effects Of The Mission Status Graphics Polar Star Display On Failure Detection Time And Situation Awareness For Mission And System Monitoring In General Aviation Aircraft, Anthony P. Bartolone

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

For years, the aviation industry has been under severe scrutiny over the safety of flight when cockpit automation is over relied on and when it is under utilized. This double-edged sword raises the question of situation awareness in aviation. With the recent boom in cockpit automation and advanced avionics some fear that the pilots are being put outside "the loop". Unfortunately, humans are notoriously poor monitors of reliable systems over time. However, research is currently being conducted into a new form of display that has the ability to group a myriad of aircraft mission and system status information onto one …

The Effect Of An Unconscious Auditory Stimulus On Pilot Performance Under Varying Instrument Flying Conditions, Christina Eleni Christakou Jul 2003

The Effect Of An Unconscious Auditory Stimulus On Pilot Performance Under Varying Instrument Flying Conditions, Christina Eleni Christakou

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Human error remains a significant contributing factor with respect to accidents in civil air transportation. It is therefore crucial to establish avenues by which performance on the flightdeck can be enhanced under conditions of distress. The purpose of this study was to examine whether an unconscious auditory stimulus (UAS) could enhance pilot performance under varying instrument flight (IFR) conditions on the aircraft flightdeck. Forty IFR student pilots underwent two eight-minute simulated flights, whereupon they were presented with different IFR weather conditions. During the trial, the experimental group listened to a UAS, whereas the control group listened to white noise (WN). …

Technology Management For Reshaping The World, Dundar F. Kocaoglu, Timothy R. Anderson Jul 2003

Technology Management For Reshaping The World, Dundar F. Kocaoglu, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The world is changing rapidly, and technology is playing the central role in making the changes happen. The events since PICMET '01 have made it clear that every society everywhere in the world is affected not only by the changes, but also by the technology behind them. There are few events in the world today that are not dominated, or at least influenced, by technology. This observation can be explained by recognizing the current period in the history of the world as the "technology era." When technology is properly used and managed, it leads to the reshaping of the world …

A desirable content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system would classify extracted image features to support some form of semantic retrieval. The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, an intramural R&D division of the National Library for Medicine (NLM), maintains an archive of digitized X-rays of the cervical and lumbar spine taken as part of the second national health and nutrition examination survey (NHANES II). It is our goal to provide shape-based access to digitized X-rays including retrieval on automatically detected and classified pathology, e.g., anterior osteophytes. This is done using radius of curvature analysis along the anterior portion, and morphological …

Expressions For Evaluating The Possibility Of Slip At The Liquid-Solid Interface In Open Tube Capillary Electrochromatography, B. A. Grimes, Athanasios I. Liapis Jul 2003

Expressions For Evaluating The Possibility Of Slip At The Liquid-Solid Interface In Open Tube Capillary Electrochromatography, B. A. Grimes, Athanasios I. Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, expressions are constructed and solved that describe the velocity field of electroosmotic flow (EOF) in open tube capillary electrochromatography (CEC) systems when the possibility of having unequal tangential velocities at the liquid-solid interface is considered and a slip condition is employed as a boundary condition for the velocity of the EOF at the capillary wall. the coupled equations of hydrodynamics (momentum balance equation) and electrostatics (Poisson equation) are solved numerically in order to obtain the distribution of the velocity field as well as the value of the volumetric flow rate in the open tube. Also, expressions for …

A Statistical Evaluation Of Risk Priority Numbers In Failure Modes And Effects Analysis Applied To The Prediction Of Complex Systems, Anthony W. Dean Jul 2003

A Statistical Evaluation Of Risk Priority Numbers In Failure Modes And Effects Analysis Applied To The Prediction Of Complex Systems, Anthony W. Dean

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Complex systems such as military aircraft and naval ships are difficult to cost effectively maintain. Frequently, large-scale maintenance of complex systems (i.e., a naval vessel) is based on the reduction of the system to its base subcomponents and the use of manufacturer-suggested, time-directed, preventative maintenance, which is augmented during the systems lifecycle with predictive maintenance which assesses the system's ability to perform its mission objectives. While preventative maintenance under certain conditions can increase reliability, preventative maintenance systems are often costly, increase down time, and allow for maintenance-induced failures, which may decrease the reliability of the system (Ebeling, 1997). This maintenance …

Atmospheric Water Vapor Lidar Measurements Using Analog And Photon Counting Techniques, Anuj Maheshkumar Shah

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Atmospheric water vapor measurements are essential for the understanding of Earth's weather and radiation budget, along with the water cycle. The remote sensing Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) technique is a commanding method used for water vapor measurements from aircraft, spaceborne, and ground-based platforms. The new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) water vapor DIAL system provides great feasibility due to the weight and size limitations. The system has significantly less weight, power consumption, and noise presence, thus making it great for UAV applications.

This thesis discusses a UAV water vapor DIAL system that was designed, developed, and evaluated. The research effort was …

Monte Carlo Analysis Of Millimeter-Wave Gan Based Gunn Effect Oscillators, Sridhara Viswanadham Jul 2003

Monte Carlo Analysis Of Millimeter-Wave Gan Based Gunn Effect Oscillators, Sridhara Viswanadham

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Gunn diodes are one of the most common high frequency solid-state oscillators at the present time, and are considered as promising devices for millimeter and submillimeter wave applications. Monte Carlo studies of Gunn diodes based on bulk wurtzite GaN have been carried out in this thesis research. Two structures have been examined: (i) devices with conventional single notch structure and (ii) repetitive structures with serial segments to fashion a "multiple domain" device. Wurtzite GaN has been chosen because of the high drift velocity and because analytical expressions for the band structure have recently become available. Performance parameters of interest such …

An Experimental Study Of Automotive Wakes For Drag Breakdown, Ilteris Koc Jul 2003

An Experimental Study Of Automotive Wakes For Drag Breakdown, Ilteris Koc

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A key to better performance and fuel economy for both road vehicles and aerospace vehicles is better understanding of the drag and lift mechanisms. Drag and lift can be evaluated computationally or experimentally by using various methods, such as wake surveys. Wake surveys with total pressure rakes, 5-hole rakes, and Particle Image Velocimetry techniques are routinely conducted in wind tunnels to provide insight into the flow field and hence to improve the design of the road vehicles or aircraft. However, systematic decomposition of the wake into components such as profile, induced, or wave drag appears to be further advanced in …

Analytical Model Of A Thermomechanical Hot Channel Coupled To A Friction Stir Welding Process, Saptarshi Mandal Jul 2003

Analytical Model Of A Thermomechanical Hot Channel Coupled To A Friction Stir Welding Process, Saptarshi Mandal

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Although fusion welding techniques are well established, recent developments in solid state joining techniques have produced high quality welds in materials that are difficult to fusion weld. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) was developed in 1991 as a robust solid-state joining technique that uses a specially shaped rotating tool to generate heat and plasticize material around the tool. The tool then mixes plasticized material along the joint line to produce the weld. Over the last decade, FSW has become increasingly popular for welding aluminum. The combination of attractive properties of the weld and cost-efficiency has led researchers to investigate the feasibility …

Survey Of Welding Processes, Theodore Hopwood Ii Jul 2003

Survey Of Welding Processes, Theodore Hopwood Ii

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The current KYTC “SPECIAL PROVISION NO. 4 WELDING STEEL BRIDGES” prohibits the use of welding processes other than shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and submerged arc welding (SAW). Nationally, bridge welding is codified under ANSI/AASHTO/AWS D1.5M/D1.5:2002 Bridge Welding Code. That document allows the use of other welding processes including flux core arc welding, gas metal arc welding, electroslag welding and electrogas welding after passing qualification tests.

Both the KYTC Special Provision and the Bridge Welding Code were reviewed. Representatives from 14 state highway agencies, fabrication shops, universities and welding equipment firms were questioned regarding the wider use of the welding …

Analytical Ise Calculation And Optimum Control System Design, Tony Kealy, Aidan O'Dwyer Jul 2003

Analytical Ise Calculation And Optimum Control System Design, Tony Kealy, Aidan O'Dwyer

Conference papers

Abstract – In control system theory, a performance index is a quantitative measure of the performance of a system and is chosen so that emphasis is given to the important system parameters. In this paper, the authors demonstrate two methods to determine analytically the Integral of the Square of the Error (ISE) performance index value for a first-order-plus-dead-time (FOPDT) process model under PI control. The ability of proportional/integral (PI) and proportional/integral/derivative (PID) controllers to compensate most practical industrial processes has led to their wide acceptance in industrial applications. The most direct way to set up PI/PID controller parameters is the …

Highway Crash Site Management, Monica L. Barrett, Jennifer R. Walton Jul 2003

Highway Crash Site Management, Monica L. Barrett, Jennifer R. Walton

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Traveler delay is the problem most often associated with highway crashes, but by far the most serious problem is the resulting secondary crashes that occur. Another related issue is the danger posed to response personnel serving the public at the scene of a crash. The longer a crash is in place, the longer the responders are vulnerable and exposed to injury.

The Kentucky Transportation Center, in cooperation with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, developed a checklist and interagency workshop to address ways to secure and coordinate the resources necessary to restore the roadway’s operation in a safe and timely manner. The …

A Ram-Based Neural Network For Collision Avoidance In A Mobile Robot, Qiang Yao, Daryl G. Beetner, Donald C. Wunsch, Bjorn Osterloh Jul 2003

A Ram-Based Neural Network For Collision Avoidance In A Mobile Robot, Qiang Yao, Daryl G. Beetner, Donald C. Wunsch, Bjorn Osterloh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A RAM-based neural network is being developed for a mobile robot controlled by a simple microprocessor system. Conventional neural networks often require a powerful and sophisticated computer system. Training a multi-layer neural network requires repeated presentation of training data, which often results in very long learning time. The goal for this paper is to demonstrate that RAM-based neural networks are a suitable choice for embedded applications with few computational resources. This functionality is demonstrated in a simple robot powered by an 8051 microcontroller with 512 bytes of RAM. The RAM-based neural network allows the robot to detect and avoid obstacles …
