Identification Of Dynamic Properties Of Materials For The Nuclear Waste Package, Brendan O'Toole, Mohamed Trabia, Amy J. Smiecinski Oct 2003

Identification Of Dynamic Properties Of Materials For The Nuclear Waste Package, Brendan O'Toole, Mohamed Trabia, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

Stainless steel 316L, titanium alloy grade 7, and alloy C22 are currently under consideration as candidate materials for use in various components associated with the spent nuclear fuel package, which must be designed to withstand structural deformation caused by static, thermal, and handling loads. In addition, it has to maintain its integrity in case of accidents, where it may be subjected to high loads over a very short period of time. Mechanical characteristics of these three materials under dynamic loading are not well documented. This paper describes the procedures and results obtained from experiments performed over a range of slow …

Greedy Algorithms For Optimizing Multivariate Horner Schemes, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2003

Greedy Algorithms For Optimizing Multivariate Horner Schemes, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

For univariate polynomials f(x1), Horner scheme provides the fastest way to compute the value. For multivariate polynomials, several different version of Horner scheme are possible; it is not clear which of them is optimal. In this paper, we propose a greedy algorithm that will hopefully lead to good computation times.

A univariate Horner scheme has another advantage: if the value x1 is known with uncertainty, and we are interested in the resulting uncertainty in f(x1), then Horner scheme leads to a better estimate for this uncertainty than many other ways of computing f(x1). The second greedy algorithm that we propose …

Interval Approach To Phase Measurements Can Lead To Arbitrarily Complex Sets - A Theorem And Ways Around It, Bharat C. Mulupuru, Vladik Kreinovich, Roberto Osegueda Oct 2003

Interval Approach To Phase Measurements Can Lead To Arbitrarily Complex Sets - A Theorem And Ways Around It, Bharat C. Mulupuru, Vladik Kreinovich, Roberto Osegueda

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We are often interested in phases of complex quantities; e.g., in non-destructive testing of aerospace structures, important information comes from phases of Eddy current and magnetic resonance.

For each measurement, we have an upper bound D on the measurement error dx=X-x, so when the measurement result is X, we know that the actual value x is in [X-D,X+D]. Often, we have no information about probabilities of different values, so this interval is our only information about x. When the accuracy is not sufficient, we perform several repeated measurements, and conclude that x belongs to the intersection of the corresponding intervals. …

Variations In Control And Display Gain In A First Control Order Compensatory Manual Tracking Task, Micah N. Morris Oct 2003

Variations In Control And Display Gain In A First Control Order Compensatory Manual Tracking Task, Micah N. Morris

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

There exist many factors that contribute to the optimal manual control of a system by a human operator (HO). Two such variables include control gain and display gain. Of particular interest to the following experiment is the contribution of these two variables to the manual tracking performance of any HO conducting a compensatory tracking task while using a first control-order tracking system. Since the optimal level of control gain required for maximal manual control of a tracking device is system dependent, it may be expected that the same holds true of display gain. Regardless, it is the purpose of the …

The Search For The Opto-Kinetic Cervical Reflex And Reduced Roll Reversals In Pilots Viewing A 3-D Perspective Display, John Carl Faust Oct 2003

The Search For The Opto-Kinetic Cervical Reflex And Reduced Roll Reversals In Pilots Viewing A 3-D Perspective Display, John Carl Faust

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Pilots using conventional instrumentation can suffer spatial disorientation (SD) when unexpectedly forced to transition from visual flight to instrument flight during roll maneuvers. This simulator study was conducted to see if a 3-D perspective display could prevent this form of spatial disorientation by eliciting the opto-kinetic cervical reflex (OKCR), an instinctive postural response that humans use to maintain awareness of their spatial orientation. The current research found evidence of the OKCR in pilots viewing both a 3-D perspective display and an electronic attitude indicator. Pilots viewing a standard moving-horizon attitude indicator produced little or no OKCR response. However, pilots still …

Vibration Analysis Of A Fan/Compressor Blade, Daisaku Inoyama

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The vibration of blades in gas turbine engines has become an important issue during the last decade because of its significant impact on high cycle fatigue failure due to resonant vibrations. The main objective of this thesis is the vibration analysis of compressor/fan blade using three-dimensional finite element analysis together with various analytical approaches. First, the analytical solutions were established using various analytical methods, Bernoulli-Euler, Rayleigh, Rayleigh-Ritz, two-dimensional plate, and Timoshenko beam methods. Then, the vibration behaviors of the blade are analyzed in full extent using commercially available finite element solver, MSC.NASTRAN, and correlated with the analytical solutions. The finite …

Polymer-Based Capacitors, Junction Field -Effect Transistors, And A Follower Circuit By Lithography, Self -Assembly, And Ink -Jet Printing Techniques, Yuxin Liu Oct 2003

Polymer-Based Capacitors, Junction Field -Effect Transistors, And A Follower Circuit By Lithography, Self -Assembly, And Ink -Jet Printing Techniques, Yuxin Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

The study of organic materials to create field-effect transistors has recently emerged and is gaining much interest. All-polymer electronic devices are currently in their infancy, like semiconductor devices when they first appeared. As a result, current performance of these devices is in no way comparable to the state-of-the-art semiconductor devices. However, all-polymer devices have a few possible appealing advantages. First, all polymer devices have the potential for low-cost fabrication due to their ease of manufacturability, with fewer and simpler processing steps compared with solid-state semiconductor devices. Secondly, polymer devices offer the ability of material flexibility. Lastly, polymer devices may prove …

Suitability Of Pulse Train™, A Novel Digitally Implemented Real-Time Control Technique, For Bifred Converter, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Ali Emadi, Mark Telefus, Anatoly Shteynberg

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Pulse TrainTM, a new control scheme, is presented and applied to a BIFRED converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), which avoids the light-load high-voltage stress problem. In contrast to the conventional control techniques, the principal idea of Pulse Train is to regulate the output voltage using a series of high and low energy pulses generated by the current of the inductor. In this paper, applicability of the proposed technique to both the input and magnetizing inductances of BIFRED converter is investigated. Analysis of BIFRED converter operating in DCM as well as the output voltage ripple estimation are …

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

A modified form of RSVP (rapid serial visual presentation) was presented to 15 male and 15 female undergraduate and graduate students from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The participants read 9 short passages electronically presented as 2, 4, or 6 lines of text in rapid sequence on a simulated cell phone display interface, at three speeds. Comprehension of text passages was examined in an attempt to find an ideal method of presenting lengthy text on a small screen interface. The results indicated that as participants were exposed to greater speeds and an increasing number of lines their comprehension of the passages decreased. …

A Computer-Based Articulation Training Aid For Short Words (Cata), Mukund Devarajan Oct 2003

A Computer-Based Articulation Training Aid For Short Words (Cata), Mukund Devarajan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Several improvements in the vowel articulation training aid (VATA) are described, as well as the efforts to extend the visual feedback system to operate with short words in the form of consonant, vowel and consonant (CVC). The extended version of the visual feedback system is referred to as CATA (Computer-based Articulation Training Aid); the vowel version of the aid (VATA) only operates with ten American English monopthong vowels. Improvements in VATA include the use of a neural network (NN) recognizer method to prune a large database of vowel recordings to eliminate noisy and/or mispronounced tokens. The spectral jitter problem, previously …

Unidirectional Cordic For Efficient Computation Of Trigonometric And Hyperbolic Functions, Satish Ravichandran Oct 2003

Unidirectional Cordic For Efficient Computation Of Trigonometric And Hyperbolic Functions, Satish Ravichandran

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

CORDIC (Coordinate Rotation Digital Computer) is an iterative algorithm to compute values of trigonometric, logarithmic and transcendental functions by performing vector rotations, which can be implemented with only shift and add operations in a digital system. CORDIC algorithms are extensively used in the areas of digital signal processing, digital image processing and artificial neural networks. A new technique, named unidirectional CORDIC, for efficient computation of trigonometric and hyperbolic functions is presented in this thesis. In the conventional CORDIC algorithm, the vector rotations are performed in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions, but in the unidirectional CORDIC the vectors are rotated only …

The Effects Of A Modified Gantt Chart Depicting Schedule Risk, Joseph Allen Hope Oct 2003

The Effects Of A Modified Gantt Chart Depicting Schedule Risk, Joseph Allen Hope

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The tools and methodologies used to manage projects continue to evolve. A popular project management tool for monitoring a project's schedule is the Gantt chart. The Gantt chart provides information about projected start and end times for each task of a project. A critical limitation of the Gantt chart, however, is its inability to depict uncertainty surrounding the project schedule, or project schedule risk. The present study investigated the effectiveness of three alternative formats for depicting schedule risk. The three presentation formats used were a table, a table with a traditional Gantt chart, and a table and a modified Gantt …

Wind-Induced Exchange In Semi-Enclosed Basins, Rosario Sanay Oct 2003

Wind-Induced Exchange In Semi-Enclosed Basins, Rosario Sanay

OES Theses and Dissertations

The wind-induced circulation over laterally varying bathymetry was investigated in homogeneous and in stratified systems using the three-dimensional Regional Ocean Model (ROMS). For homogeneous systems, the focus was to describe the influence of the earth's rotation on the lateral distribution of the flow with particular emphasis on the transverse circulation. Along-basin wind-stress with no rotation caused a circulation dominated by an axially symmetric transverse structure consisting of downwind flow over the shoals and upwind flow in the channel along the whole domain. Transverse circulation was important only at the head of the system where the water sank and reversed direction …

The primary focus of this report is two-fold; to provide a literature review on what has been previously learned about highway runoff in relation to karsts aquifers and to characterize a karsts highway site in Kentucky that can be used to evaluate a variety of best management practices. From research findings, the main sources of pollutants in highway runoff came from vehicles, atmospheric fallout, and precipitation. The behavior of pollutants and their interaction with the environment can dictate where they will be found and how to best minimize their effects. Although it would seem that traffic volumes would greatly influence …

Fact Sheet #2: Do I Need A Npdes Permit For My Livestock Or Poultry Operation, Richard K. Koelsch Oct 2003

Fact Sheet #2: Do I Need A Npdes Permit For My Livestock Or Poultry Operation, Richard K. Koelsch

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

New U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules that took effect April 14, 2003 indicate that animal feeding operations (AFOs) can be defined as concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and required to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit from the EPA or a designated state permitting authority. The likelihood of an AFO being classified as a CAFO will depend, in large part, on whether that operation is considered to be large, medium, or small.

Winter Operations, Abrasives And Salt Brine, Geza Pesti, Yu Liu Oct 2003

Winter Operations, Abrasives And Salt Brine, Geza Pesti, Yu Liu

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The primary objective of winter maintenance operations is to improve traffic safety and efficiency during winter storm periods. Abrasives and salt brines have been successfully applied to increase traction and prevent snow and ice from bonding to road surface. However, because of some undesired side effects, such as corrosion and damage to the environment, salt and abrasives may need to be supplemented by other substances in some areas. Powerful non-corrosive acetate-based chemicals have been considered by several agencies, but their high price has limited their use. Recent research has focused on the use of new, less corrosive, and highly effective …

On The Mechanical Response In A Thermal Barrier System Due To Martensitic Phase Transformation In The Bond Coat, Anette M. Karlsson Oct 2003

On The Mechanical Response In A Thermal Barrier System Due To Martensitic Phase Transformation In The Bond Coat, Anette M. Karlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Recentstudies have shown that Pt-aluminide—a common bond coat material inthermal barrier coatings—undergoes martensitic transformations during thermal cycling. The transformationsare associated with both large transformation strain and a strainhysteresis, leading to accumulation of a mismatch strain. Thermal barriersystems based on Pt-aluminide bond coats are susceptible to interfacialmorphological instabilities. In this study, we investigate how the cyclicmartensitic transformation influences the morphology. Two key results are: (i)the morphological instabilities are highly sensitive to the thermo-mechanical propertiesof the substrate due to the martensitic transformation; (ii) thehysteresis associated with cyclic martensitic transformation cannot drive the morphologicalinstabilities; the strains associated with the formation of the thermallygrown …
