Circular Annular Planar Monopoles With Em Coupling, Z. N. Chen, Max Ammann, M.Y. W. Chia, T.S. P. See

Articles

A circular annular planar monopole with electromagnetic coupling shows broadband properties. The planar radiator is electromagnetically coupled with a probe-fed strip, and separated from it by a thin dielectric sheet. The parametric effects on the bandwidth are examined experimentally. The measurements demonstrate that the proposed monopoles have the merit of broad impedance bandwidths in the order of 100% for VSWR=2:1 and of 4:1 for VSWR=3:1 and acceptable radiation patterns across the bandwidths.

Towards Foundations Of Processing Imprecise Data: From Traditional Statistical Techniques Of Processing Crisp Data To Statistical Processing Of Fuzzy Data, Hung T. Nguyen, Tonghui Wang, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In traditional statistics, we process crisp data - usually, results of measurements and/or observations. Not all the knowledge comes from measurements and observations. In many real-life situations, in addition to the results of measurements and observations, we have expert estimates, estimates that are often formulated in terms of natural language, like "x is large". Before we analyze how to process these statements, we must be able to translate them in a language that a computer can understand. This translation of expert statements from natural language into a precise language of numbers is one of the main original objectives of fuzzy …

Recommended Strategies For Odor Control In Confinement Beef Cattle Operations, Kent Tjardes, Alvaro Garcia, Hans Stein, Charles Ullery, Stephen Pohl, Christopher Schmit

SDSU Extension Special Series

Odors coming off a beef feeding operation are generated from three different sources: the feedlot facility, waste storage, and the land where the manure is applied. In some operations, the feedlot facility may also serve as the primary waste storage area. To reduce the total amount of odor generated from a beef feeding operation, odor generation and emission by each of these three sources needs to be reduced.

Guiding Growth: A Survey Of Tax Incentives, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service Jan 2003

Guiding Growth: A Survey Of Tax Incentives, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service

Legislation

Current development patterns and increased tax pressures in local municipalities combine to harm both Maine’s natural resources and its quality of life. Previous initiatives such as the implementation of zoning laws did not fully result in the desired outcomes. Zoning laws were often too flexible and often did not resist market and political pressures to change zoning regulations to allow development with possible economic growth. A sound taxation system or fee structure may be the solution to slow down development in natural areas and direct it towards areas appropriate for growth.

To protect Maine’s natural resources more successfully from future …

Topographic And Meteorological Influences On Spatial Scaling Of Heavy Convective Rainfall In Mountainous Regions, Antonio Rubert Godoy Jan 2003

Topographic And Meteorological Influences On Spatial Scaling Of Heavy Convective Rainfall In Mountainous Regions, Antonio Rubert Godoy

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Characterizing the spatial scaling and dynamics of convective precipitation in mountainous terrain and the development of downscaling methods to transfer precipitation fields from one scale to another is the overall motivation for this research. Substantial progress has been made on characterizing the space-time organization of Midwestern convective systems and tropical rainfall, which has led to the development of statistical/dynamical downscaling models. Space-time analysis and downscaling of orographic precipitation has received less attention due to the complexities of topographic influences. This study uses multiscale statistical analysis to investigate the spatial scaling of organized thunderstorms that produce heavy rainfall and flooding in …

An Algorithm Using Length-R Paths To Approximate Subgraph Isomorphism, Fred Depiero, David Krout Jan 2003

An Algorithm Using Length-R Paths To Approximate Subgraph Isomorphism, Fred Depiero, David Krout

Electrical Engineering

The ‘LeRP’ algorithm approximates subgraph isomorphism for attributed graphs based on counts of length-r paths. The algorithm provides a good approximation to the maximal isomorphic subgraph. The basic approach of the LeRP algorithm differs fundamentally from other methods. When comparing structural similarity LeRP uses a neighborhood of nodes that varies in size dynamically. This approach provides sufficient evidence of similarity to permit LeRP to form a node-to-node mapping and can be computed with polynomial effort in the worst-case. Results from over 32,000 simulated cases are reported. We demonstrate that LeRP does not need a high dynamic range of node and …

Logic Foundry: Rapid Prototyping For Fpga-Based Dsp Systems, Gary Spivey Jan 2003

Logic Foundry: Rapid Prototyping For Fpga-Based Dsp Systems, Gary Spivey

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

We introduce the Logic Foundry, a system for the rapid creation and integration of FPGA-based digital signal processing systems. Recognizing that some of the greatest challenges in creating FPGA-based systems occur in the integration of the various components, we have proposed a system that targets the following four areas of integration: design flow integration, component integration, platform integration, and software integration. Using the Logic Foundry, a system can be easily specified, and then automatically constructed and integrated with system level software.

Acoustic Communication In Two Freshwater Gobies: Ambient Noise And Short-Range Propagation In Shallow Streams, Marco Lugli, Michael L. Fine Jan 2003

Acoustic Communication In Two Freshwater Gobies: Ambient Noise And Short-Range Propagation In Shallow Streams, Marco Lugli, Michael L. Fine

Biology Publications

Noise is an important theoretical constraint on the evolution of signal form and sensory performance. In order to determine environmental constraints on the communication of two freshwater gobies Padogobius martensii and Gobius nigricans, numerous noise spectra weremeasured from quiet areas and ones adjacent to waterfalls and rapids in two shallow stony streams. Propagation of goby sounds and waterfall noise was also measured. A quiet window around 100 Hz is present in many noise spectra from noisy locations. The window lies between two noise sources, a low-frequency one attributed to turbulence, and a high-frequency one (200–500 Hz) attributed to bubble …

High Auality Time-Scale Modification Of Speech Using A Peak Alignment Overlap-Add Alogroithm (Paola), David Dorran, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle Jan 2003

High Auality Time-Scale Modification Of Speech Using A Peak Alignment Overlap-Add Alogroithm (Paola), David Dorran, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

The duration of a speech passage can be altered using audio time-scale modification techniques. Time-scale modification can be achieved in the time domain by segmenting the input signal into overlapping frames and recombining the frames with an overlap differing from the analysis overlap. We present a time-scale modification algorithm that uses a simple peak alignment technique to synchronise overlapping synthesis frames. The peak alignment overlap-add (Paola) algorithm also takes advantage of waveform properties to ensure a high quality output for the minimum number of iterations. The new algorithm produces a time-scaled output of approximately equal quality to that of an …

Rhythmic Parsing Of Sonified Dna And Rna Sequences, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2003

Rhythmic Parsing Of Sonified Dna And Rna Sequences, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

Sonification allows existing mathematical data to be used as the model for audio output, notably that the audio produced is related to or representative of that data in some way. Existing work in the field has been largely focused on the aesthetic tailoring of the output audio for compositional benefit rather than as a framework for audio representation and analysis. It is the goal of this research to apply existing techniques for pitch substitution to an analytical method that seeks to define and represent patterns within existing data sets (primarily DNA and RNA sequences). It is often the case that …

Improved Pattern Stability For Monopole Antennas With Ultrawideband Impedance Characteristics, Max Ammann Jan 2003

Improved Pattern Stability For Monopole Antennas With Ultrawideband Impedance Characteristics, Max Ammann

Conference papers

The requirement of future software defined and reconfigurable radio networks to operate in multiple, wide-ranging, frequency bands places heavy demands on antenna designs. Rather than using antennas tuned at the time of manufacture to operate in certain predefined frequency bands under predefined radio systems, which limits the possibilities of implementing new radio systems on a reconfigurable terminal, a wideband antenna is proposed. The use of a single antenna which can operate over many octaves is very desirable for future wireless communications systems. We discuss the characteristics of the planar monopole, an antenna with wideband properties. The addition of a second …

Energy Performance Of Indirect Evaporative Cooling In Chilled Ceiling Applications In Maritime Temperate Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn Jan 2003

Energy Performance Of Indirect Evaporative Cooling In Chilled Ceiling Applications In Maritime Temperate Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn

Conference Papers

Evaporative cooling has had limited application in maritime, temperate, climates due to the low levels of cooling water availability which result, when low temperature (5 to 8˚C), convection based, building cooling systems are used. However, the success of "high temperature" radiant cooling, in the form of chilled ceilings, has prompted a review of evaporative cooling in maritime, temperate, conditions. In order to maximize evaporative cooling availability, however, in this application, it is necessary to achieve low wet bulb temperature approach conditions, at viable levels of primary energy consumption. This paper presents the results of experimental research into the energy performance …

Experimental Energy Performance Of Open Cooling Towers Used Under Low And Variable Approach Conditions For Indirect Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn Jan 2003

Experimental Energy Performance Of Open Cooling Towers Used Under Low And Variable Approach Conditions For Indirect Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn

Articles

The success of chilled ceilings and displacement ventilation systems as a means of sensible cooling in buildings has prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of generating the required cooling water. When such cooling water is generated at low approach conditions (2–5 K), at the higher temperatures required in these systems (14–18°C), very high levels of availability result. In many north western European locations the levels of availability are such that the prospect of supplanting rather than simply supplementing the refrigeration system, for sensible cooling purposes, arises. The viability of the technique, however, largely depends on …

Site-Specific Probabilistic Load Modelling For Bridge Reliability Analysis, Colin C. Caprani, A. Belay, A. J. O'Connor Jan 2003

Site-Specific Probabilistic Load Modelling For Bridge Reliability Analysis, Colin C. Caprani, A. Belay, A. J. O'Connor

Conference papers

Reliability assessment of a short span beam-slab reinforced concrete bridge in Vienna is proposed using site-specific traffic data recorded using the Slovenian Weigh in Motion (SiWIM) system. An initial evaluation of the bridge using a determinintic approach shows that the critical limit state is bending. This paper describes the statistical analysis of the SiWIM data and the traffic flow simulations performed to predict the characteristic extreme load effects to which the bridge may be subjected during its remaining lifetime. These values are compared to the magnitude obtained from a deterministic approach. The influence lines used in the simulations are the …

Analysis Of Temperatures At A Municipal Solid Waste Landfill, Nazli Yesiller, James L. Hanson Jan 2003

Analysis Of Temperatures At A Municipal Solid Waste Landfill, Nazli Yesiller, James L. Hanson

Civil and Environmental Engineering

A study is conducted to determine the thermal regime within and around a municipal solid waste landfill located in midwestern U.S.A. Spatial distributions of temperatures have been determined over time since 1999 within the waste mass, liner and cover systems, and surrounding subgrade. Seasonal variations, placement of waste, age of waste, depth and location of waste, and available moisture have significant effects on temperatures. Temperatures of wastes at shallow depths, bottom liner systems prior to waste placement, and final cover systems conform to seasonal temperature variations. Steady elevated temperatures are reached with respect to air and ground temperatures at central …

Improving Dsp Performance With A Small Amount Of Field Programmable Logic, John Y. Oliver, Venkatesh Akella Jan 2003

Improving Dsp Performance With A Small Amount Of Field Programmable Logic, John Y. Oliver, Venkatesh Akella

Electrical Engineering

We show a systematic methodology to create DSP + field-programmable logic hybrid architectures by viewing it as a hardware/software codesign problem. This enables an embedded processor architect to evaluate the trade-offs in the increase in die area due to the field programmable logic and the resultant improvement in performance or code size. We demonstrate our methodology with the implementation of a Viterbi decoder. A key result of the paper is that the addition of a field-programmable data alignment unit (FPDAU) between the register-file and the computational blocks provides 15%-22% improvement in the performance of a Viterbi decoder on the state-of-the-art …
