Hydrological And Geotechnical Investigation Of A Sparta, New Jersey Landslide, James Talerico Jan 2003

Hydrological And Geotechnical Investigation Of A Sparta, New Jersey Landslide, James Talerico

Theses

On August 13, 2000, a massive landslide occurred in Northern New Jersey following an extreme rainfall event during which 14.1 inches of precipitation fell locally during a 24-hour period. The slide, with an estimated volume of 22,000ft3, traveled up to 1,500ft in a short period. While landslides do occasionally occur along the coastal bluffs of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, slides of this magnitude are uncommon in the glacial soils of the New Jersey Highland section.

The investigation of this landslide was compiled through rainfall data and geotechnical data, which was used to determine the triggering mechanism of the …

An Interface Chip For Saw Based Sensor In An Ad-Hoc Network, Yagneshwara Ramakrishna Vadapalli Jan 2003

An Interface Chip For Saw Based Sensor In An Ad-Hoc Network, Yagneshwara Ramakrishna Vadapalli

Theses

The design of a smart integrated chemical sensor system that will enhance sensor performance and compatibility to ad hoc network architecture remains a challenge. This work involves the design of an interface chip for a Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) based chemical sensor where the sensor reflects the RF input and introduces a time delay proportional to the concentration of the vapors absorbed by it. The interface chip detects the frequency shift as a function of the chemical species absorbed by the sensor and alerts the ad hoc network controller when a monitored parameter exceeded some threshold, based on local processing …

Testing With Hostile Data Streams, Alan A. Jorgensen Jan 2003

Testing With Hostile Data Streams, Alan A. Jorgensen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

This note describes a method of testing software for response to malicious data streams. Systems that process data streams obtained from an external source such as the Internet are vulnerable to security issues if malicious data is not processed correctly. This note describes a testing method that creates malicious data streams, applies them to a software application and checks the appropriateness of the application response. The note begins with a description of the problem: inadequate testing of software response to malicious data streams. I present a method of testing the response to malicious data streams and introduce the concepts of …

Pichia Pastoris Fermentation With Mixed-Feeds Of Glycerol And Methanol: Growth Kinetics And Production Improvement, Wenhui Zhang, Karen J. Hywood Potter, Bradley A. Plantz, Vicki L. Schlegel, Leonard A. Smith, Michael M. Meagher Jan 2003

Pichia Pastoris Fermentation With Mixed-Feeds Of Glycerol And Methanol: Growth Kinetics And Production Improvement, Wenhui Zhang, Karen J. Hywood Potter, Bradley A. Plantz, Vicki L. Schlegel, Leonard A. Smith, Michael M. Meagher

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

Fed-batch fermentation of a methanol utilization plus (Mut+) Pichia pastoris strain typically has a growth phase followed by a production phase (induction phase). In the growth phase glycerol is usually used as carbon for cell growth while in the production phase methanol serves as both inducer and carbon source for recombinant protein expression. Some researchers employed a mixed glycerol-methanol feeding strategy during the induction phase to improve production, but growth kinetics on glycerol and methanol and the interaction between them were not reported. The objective of this paper is to optimize the mixed feeding strategy based on growth kinetic studies …

An Analysis Of The 1999 Darpa/Lincoln Laboratory Evaluation Data For Network Anomaly Detection, Matthew V. Mahoney, Philip K. Chan Jan 2003

An Analysis Of The 1999 Darpa/Lincoln Laboratory Evaluation Data For Network Anomaly Detection, Matthew V. Mahoney, Philip K. Chan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We investigate potential simulation artifacts and their effects on the evaluation of network anomaly detection systems in the 1999 DARPA/MIT Lincoln Laboratory off-line intrusion detection evaluation data set. A statistical comparison of the simulated background and training traffic with real traffic collected from a university departmental server suggests the presence of artifacts that could allow a network anomaly detection system to detect some novel intrusions based on idiosyncrasies of the underlying implementation of the simulation, with an artificially low false alarm rate. The evaluation problem can be mitigated by mixing real traffic into the simulation. We compare five anomaly detection …

The Design And Performance Of Special Purpose Middleware: A Sensor Networks Case Study, Venkita Subramonian, Guoliang Xing, Christopher Gill, Ron Cytron Jan 2003

The Design And Performance Of Special Purpose Middleware: A Sensor Networks Case Study, Venkita Subramonian, Guoliang Xing, Christopher Gill, Ron Cytron

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

General purpose middleware has been shown to be effective in meeting diverse functional requirements for a wide range of distributed systems. Advanced middleware projects have also supported a single quality-of-service dimension such as real-time, fault tolerance, or small memory footprint. However, there is limited experience supporting multiple quality-of-service dimensions in mid-dleware to meet the needs of special purpose applications. Even though general purpose middleware can cover an entire spectrum of applications by supporting the union of all features required by each application, this approach breaks down for distributed real-time and embedded systems. In particular, features from one dimension such as …

Calibration Of Ysz Sensors For The Measurement Of Oxygen Concentration In Liquid Pb-Bi Eutectic, Xiaolong Wu, Ramkumar Sivaraman, Ning Li, Wei Hang, T. W. Darling, Yingtao Jiang, Woosoon Yim, Bingmei Fu

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Although liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is a good candidate for coolant in the subcritical transmutation blanket, it is known to be corrosive to stainless steel, the material of the carrying tubes and containers. Such longterm corrosion problem can be prevented by producing and maintaining a protective oxide layer on the exposed surface of stainless steel. For this purpose, it is required to accurately control the concentration of oxygen dissolved in LBE. Currently, YSZ (Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) oxygen sensors, based on an existing automotive oxygen sensor, with molten bismuth saturated with oxygen as the reference, have been selected for oxygen-concentration measurement. …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inelastic pulsed neutron scattering measurements on YBa2⁢Cu3⁢O6.95 single crystals indicate that the sample has a distinct a-b plane anisotropy in the oxygen vibrations. The Cu-O bond-stretching-type phonons, which are suspected to interact strongly with charge, are simultaneously observed along the a and b directions due to a 7-meV splitting arising from the orthorhombicity, even though the sample is twinned. The bond-stretching LO branch with the polarization along a (perpendicular to the chain) loses intensity beyond the middle of the zone, indicating branch splitting as seen in doped nickelates, with the second branch being located at …

Heat: Runtime Interception Of Win32 Functions, Michael M. Andrews

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

When researching in any field, it is always important to build upon existing work. In most research disciplines, the core base is well defined and widely documented. However, the basis of innovative research in computer science, especially at the systems level, can often be proprietary information. This can be a major problem as unless you have source code available you must be granted access to the proprietary information (by usually signing non-disclosure documents) which comes with barriers on access, ownership and the ability to publish results. As an example, Microsoft's Windows operating system (all versions) can be a good base …

Body Concept Design For Pedestrian Head Impact, S. Iskander Farooq, Peter J. Schuster Jan 2003

Body Concept Design For Pedestrian Head Impact, S. Iskander Farooq, Peter J. Schuster

Mechanical Engineering

In 1996, the European Enhanced Vehicle Safety Committee, Working Group 17 (EEVC WG17) proposed -a set of impact procedures to evaluate the pedestrian injury risk of vehicle fronts. These procedures address three aspects of pedestrian protection -head impacts, lower limb impacts, and thigh impacts -through vehicle subsystem tests. The criteria assessed during these impact tests are affected by the design of most parts of the vehicle body front-end.

One of the challenges to vehicle design introduced by these tests is the impact of an adult pedestrian headform to the top of the fender. The proposed acceptance level for Head Injury …

Creating An Entrepreneurial Culture At A Startup Engineering Program, Anthony J. Marchese, John L. Schmalzel, John C. Chen, K. Mark Weaver

Teaching Entrepreneurship to Engineering Students

In 1992, the College of Engineering at Rowan University was created as the direct result of a $100 million gift from entrepreneur Henry M. Rowan. Mr. Rowan’s requirements were that the gift be used to create a high-quality, public undergraduate engineering institution and to impact the economic development of southern New Jersey, a region which has historically lagged behind northern New Jersey. Having started with a clean curriculum slate during a period of national change in engineering curricula in response to ABET 2000, we had the opportunity to infuse an entrepreneurial culture into our engineering program from its inception. Specifically, …

Experience With An Entrepreneurship Minor For Engineering Students, Mcrae C. Banks Jan 2003

Experience With An Entrepreneurship Minor For Engineering Students, Mcrae C. Banks

Teaching Entrepreneurship to Engineering Students

In 1996 WPI developed an interdisciplinary minor in entrepreneurship aimed at engineering and science majors. This presentation will explain how that came about and how it has morphed over time in content and structure while remaining focused (and becoming more so) on its target audience. Despite its relative longevity the minor has met with limited success. The reasons behind that will be discussed as they are instructive for other schools planning such a program. Also discussed will be how all this has spawned other initiatives that have broadened the reach of the entrepreneurship program.

Entrepreneurship And Engineering Education: The Multidimensional Approaches Of Rose-Hulman Institute Of Technology, Thomas W. Mason, Arthur Western

Teaching Entrepreneurship to Engineering Students

Characteristics of successful entrepreneurs are not so different from those of successful engineers. Intelligence, creativity, risk management, tolerance of uncertainty and persistence in achieving an inner directed goal are associated with entrepreneurship, but they are characteristics of anyone, like engineers, who bring about innovation. Educating young people to embrace entrepreneurial traits and behaviors will also help to prepare them for productive careers as leaders in the engineering profession. Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) requirements have recognized that the 21st Century engineer needs both breadth and depth to be prepared for the complexities of the modern technological workplace and …

International Entrepreneurship Education, Russel C. Jones, Bethany S. Oberst Jan 2003

International Entrepreneurship Education, Russel C. Jones, Bethany S. Oberst

Teaching Entrepreneurship to Engineering Students

Entrepreneurship for engineering students must be taught within the global context. Lacking that, graduates will be ill prepared to be internationally competitive. Any engineering graduate who does not scour the earth for new ideas, developments and designs is not competitive. And any engineer who does not look at the total world marketplace for sale of products is limiting potential success. This paper will outline what every entrepreneurially minded student should have in the way of competencies, attitudes, communication strategies, cultural understandings, business mores, multinational corporate logistics, and macroeconomics understandings. It will outline cultural soft skills needed, as well as hard-nosed …
