Single Fiber Model Of Particle Retention In An Acoustically Driven Porous Mesh, Michael T. Grossner, Alan E. Penrod, Joanne M. Belovich, Donald L. Feke

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

A method for the capture of small particles (tens of microns in diameter) from a continuously flowing suspension has recently been reported. This technique relies on a standing acoustic wave resonating in a rectangular chamber filled with a high-porosity mesh. Particles are retained in this chamber via a complex interaction between the acoustic field and the porous mesh. Although the mesh has a pore size two orders of magnitude larger than the particle diameter, collection efficiencies of 90% have been measured. A mathematical model has been developed to understand the experimentally observed phenomena and to be able to predict filtration …

Multi-Threshold Control Of The Bmap/Sm/1/K Queue With Group Services, Alexander Dudin N., Srinivas R. Chakravarthy Mar 2003

Multi-Threshold Control Of The Bmap/Sm/1/K Queue With Group Services, Alexander Dudin N., Srinivas R. Chakravarthy

Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Publications

We consider a finite capacity queue in which arrivals occur according to a batch Markovian arrival process (BMAP). The customers are served in groups of varying sizes. The services are governed by a controlled semi-Markovian process according to a multithreshold strategy. We perform the steady-state analysis of this model by computing (a) the queue length distributions at departure and arbitrary epochs, (b) the Laplace-Stieltjes transform of the sojourn time distribution of an admitted customer, and (c) some selected system performance measures. An optimization problem of interest is presented and some numerical examples are illustrated.

Dynamics Of Adsorbed Poly(Methyl Acrylate) And Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) On Silica, Frank D. Blum, Wuu-Yung Lin, Crystal E. Porter Mar 2003

Dynamics Of Adsorbed Poly(Methyl Acrylate) And Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) On Silica, Frank D. Blum, Wuu-Yung Lin, Crystal E. Porter

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Deuterium NMR and modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) were used to probe the behavior of ultrathin adsorbed poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA). The spectra for the bulk methyl-labeled PMA-d3 were consistent with the motions of the polymer segments being spatially homogeneous. For the polymers adsorbed on silica, multicomponent line shapes were observed. The segmental mobility of the surface polymers increased with increased adsorbed amounts. In contrast to the behavior of the polymers in bulk, the adsorbed lower-molecular-mass PMA-d3 was less mobile than the adsorbed high-molecular-mass polymer. The presence of a polymer overlayer was sufficient to suppress the enhanced mobility of the more-mobile …

Microstructural Study Of Nanoprecipitates In Rra Treated Al-7075 T6 Using Afm/Ufm/Stem, Samuel J.M. Kuhr, Margaret Pinnell, Daniel Eylon

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

7075 T651 aluminum alloy is frequently used in aircraft applications for its high strength to weight ratio. However, aircraft parts made of this alloy have been plagued by stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Retrogression and re-aging (RRA) is a post T651 two-stage heat treatment that provides improved SCC resistance with minimal loss in tensile strength. In this study, various forms of microscopy and mechanical testing are used to investigate how the RRA process affects the microstructure.

The microscopic observations in this paper show that the precipitates in the aluminum alloy coarsen and that the grain boundary regions are depleted of copper …

Strategies For Improving Neural Signal Detection Using A Neural-Electronic Interface, Robert B. Szlavik Mar 2003

Strategies For Improving Neural Signal Detection Using A Neural-Electronic Interface, Robert B. Szlavik

Biomedical Engineering

There have been various theoretical and experimental studies presented in the literature that focus on interfacing neurons with discrete electronic devices, such as transistors. From both a theoretical and experimental perspective, these studies have emphasized the variability in the characteristics of the detected action potential from the nerve cell. The demonstrated lack of reproducible fidelity of the nerve cell action potential at the device junction would make it impractical to implement these devices in any neural prosthetic application where reliable detection of the action potential was a prerequisite. In this study, the effects of several different physical parameters on the …

Nonlinear Elastic Material Property Estimation Of Lower Extremity Residual Limb Tissues, Ergin TöNüK, M. Barbara Silver-Thorn Mar 2003

Nonlinear Elastic Material Property Estimation Of Lower Extremity Residual Limb Tissues, Ergin TöNüK, M. Barbara Silver-Thorn

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The interface stresses between the residual limb and prosthetic socket have been studied to investigate prosthetic fit. Finite-element models of the residual limb-prosthetic socket interface facilitate investigation of the mechanical interface and may serve as a potential tool for future prosthetic socket design. However, the success of such residual limb models to date has been limited, in large part due to inadequate material formulations used to approximate the mechanical behavior of residual limb soft tissues. Nonlinear finite-element analysis was used to simulate force-displacement data obtained during in vivo rate-controlled (1, 5, and 10 mm/s) cyclic indentation of the residual limb …

Spectral Polarization Measurements By Use Of The Grating Division-Of-Amplitude Photopolarimeter, Shankar Krishnan Mar 2003

Spectral Polarization Measurements By Use Of The Grating Division-Of-Amplitude Photopolarimeter, Shankar Krishnan

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The grating division-of-amplitude photopolarimeter (G-DOAP) is an instrument that exploits the multiple-beam-splitting, polarizing, and dispersive properties of diffraction gratings for the time-resolved measurement of the complete state of polarization of collimated broadband incident light, as represented by the four Stokes parameters as a function of wavelength across the spectrum. It is a compact, high-speed sensor that has no moving parts and is simple to install and operate. These characteristics make the G-DOAP well suited for in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) applications for monitoring and controlling thin-film processes. The design and performance of a prototype instrument are presented. Precise SE measurements, …

Effective Thermal Conductivity Estimates Of Particulate Mixtures, Christiaan Richter, Hendrik J. Viljoen, N.F.J Van Rensburg Mar 2003

Effective Thermal Conductivity Estimates Of Particulate Mixtures, Christiaan Richter, Hendrik J. Viljoen, N.F.J Van Rensburg

Papers in Physical Properties

Several theories have been advanced to estimate effective thermal conductivities of particulate mixtures, but most theories have focused on the dilute case. A method is proposed to estimate the effective thermal conductivity coefficient of mixtures of arbitrary concentration. Earlier the authors developed a theory to determine the expected contact area between different species. This theory is employed to determine the Kapitza resistance of the heterogeneous mixture and forms part of an overall theory to estimate the effective thermal conductivity. Results are compared with other theoretical estimates and with experiments.

Interfacial Mixing In A Highly Stratified Estuary: 2. A "Method Of Constrained Differences" Approach For The Determination Of The Momentum And Mass Balances And The Energy Of Mixing, David J. Kay, David A. Jay

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article is Part 2 of a set of papers addressing mixing in a highly stratified estuary. In Part 2, turbulence and mean flow measurements are together used to understand the role of mixing in the overall dynamics of the system. Estimates of the partition of energy dissipation between bed-generated and internal mixing suggest that internal mixing accounts for about two thirds of the total turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) produced in the salt-wedge reach of the Columbia River estuary during the neap-tide, moderate river-flow observation period. This suggests that internal mixing plays a larger role in the energetics of such …

The Air Force Operational Risk Management Program And Aviation Safety, Matthew G. Cho Mar 2003

The Air Force Operational Risk Management Program And Aviation Safety, Matthew G. Cho

Theses and Dissertations

Aviation mishaps are extremely costly in terms of dollar value, public opinion, and human life, The Air Force drastically reduced Class A mishap rates in its formative years. The rate plummeted from 44.22 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours in 1947 to 2.33 mishaps in 1983 and has held steady around 1.5 mishaps since. The Air Force implemented the Operational Risk Management (ORM) program in 1996 in an effort to protect their most valuable resources: aircraft and aviators. An AFIT thesis conducted in 1999 by Capt Park Ashley studied the Army similar Risk Management (RM) program. Ashley concluded that since his …

Sensor-Craft Analytical Certification, Ronald W. Roberts Jr. Mar 2003

Sensor-Craft Analytical Certification, Ronald W. Roberts Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This study developed a multi-disciplinary conceptual design of a joined-wing sensor-craft. Initial analysis was conducted using an aluminum model. Linear fully stressed design and flexible aerodynamic trim were used to converge to a minimum weight design that was aerodynamically stable. This optimized design was buckling safe. A similar optimization process using non-linear fully stressed design and flexible aerodynamic trim was conducted. The non- linear structurally deformation was over ten times greater than the linear structural deformation. Again, the model was structurally and aerodynamically optimized. The linear optimization was repeated using a composite structural model incorporating Conformal Load-bearing Antenna Structures. This …

Modeling Catalytic Destruction Of Subsurface Contaminants In Recirculating Wells, Kerry J. Cadena Mar 2003

Modeling Catalytic Destruction Of Subsurface Contaminants In Recirculating Wells, Kerry J. Cadena

Theses and Dissertations

Groundwater and soil contamination is a significant problem throughout the nation, with approximately 300,000 to 400,000 sites affected (National Research Council, 1994). Examples of groundwater contaminants of special interest to DoD and AF installations include fuel hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and nitroaromatic compounds. Traditional remediation technologies, which include pump-and-treat, permeable reactive barriers, and natural attenuation, have numerous drawbacks associated with them. These drawbacks have prompted researchers to look for innovative contamination clean-up methods. The technology investigated in this thesis, reticulating horizontal flow treatment wells (HFTWs) with in-well palladium (Pd) catalyst reactors, offers the potential for destruction of groundwater contaminants commonly found …

Analysis Of Broadband Higp-Impedance Ground Plane Antenna Designs, James W. Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

This research ties together computational and experimental analysis of two types of high-impedance ground plane (HIGP) antennas. One type of antenna consists of a proposed two-layer design. The structure consists of a bowtie antenna mounted over the surface of a HIGR The proposed structure was intended to achieve a resonant frequency of 3 GHz and a bandwidth of 48%; however, a design error results in a significant mismatch in operating bands between the antenna and HIGR Experiment results indicate the structure performs poorly across the entire measured band of 2-5 GHz. A new two-layer design is developed and presented. The …

Quantum Mechanical Calculations Of Monoxides Of Silicon Carbide Molecules, John W. Roberts Jr. Mar 2003

Quantum Mechanical Calculations Of Monoxides Of Silicon Carbide Molecules, John W. Roberts Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Modern semiconductor devices are principally made using the element silicon. In recent years, silicon carbide (SiC), with its wide band-gap, high thermal conductivity, and radiation resistance, has shown prospects as a semiconductor material for use in high temperature and radiation environments such as jet engines and satellites. A limiting factor in the performance of many SiC semiconductor components is the presence of lattice defects formed at oxide dielectric junctions during processing. Recent theoretical work has used small quantum mechanical systems embedded in larger molecular mechanics structures to attempt to better understand SiC surfaces and bulk materials and their oxidation. This …

Linear Programming And Genetic Algorithm Based Optimization For The Weighting Scheme Of A Value Focused Thinking Hierarchy, David M. Thawley Mar 2003

Linear Programming And Genetic Algorithm Based Optimization For The Weighting Scheme Of A Value Focused Thinking Hierarchy, David M. Thawley

Theses and Dissertations

Deriving weights for a Value Focused Thinking (VFT) hierarchy demands considerable time and input from Decision Makers (DM) and Subject Matter Experts (SME). Often, the DMs and SMEs are the leaders of companies and organizations, and this required time is unrealistic with their schedules. In these situations, as well as scenarios where there no available DMs/SMEs, conventional means of weighting a VFT hierarchy are impossible, and any VFT analysis is halted. When historical data exists on evaluation measures and performance of alternatives, linear programming and genetic algorithm based optimization may be used to derive historically optimal weights for a hierarchy. …

An Analysis Of Multiple Layered Networks, Kevin T. Kennedy Mar 2003

An Analysis Of Multiple Layered Networks, Kevin T. Kennedy

Theses and Dissertations

Current infrastructure network models of single functionality do not typically account for the interdependent nature of infrastructure networks. Infrastructure networks are generally modeled individually, as an isolated network or with minimal recognition of interactions. This research develops a methodology to model the individual infrastructure network types while explicitly modeling their interconnected effects. The result is a formulation built with two sets of variables (the original set to model infrastructure characteristics and an additional set representing cuts of interdependent elements). This formulation is decomposed by variable type using Benders Partitioning and solved to optimality using a Benders Partitioning algorithm. Current infrastructure …

Package Performance Testing Of Dangerous Goods In High Altitude Shipments, S. Paul Singh, Gary J. Burgess, Jay A. Singh Mar 2003

Package Performance Testing Of Dangerous Goods In High Altitude Shipments, S. Paul Singh, Gary J. Burgess, Jay A. Singh

Industrial Technology and Packaging

This paper discusses the impact of high altitude shipments on package integrity. High altitude shipments are encountered when trucks travel over high mountain passes or when cargo and feeder aircraft transport packages in non-pressurized or partially-pressurized cargo holds. Both these types of transport methods will result in severe changes in pressure and temperature conditions as compared to packages being transported close to sea-level The testing of packages under these conditions is critical since package integrity may be compromised. The current shipping tests performed in test labs do not account for pressure changes and vibration together. This study showed that combination …

Stress Analysis Of Silicon Carbide Microeletromechanical Systems Using Raman Spectroscopy, Stanley J. Ness Mar 2003

Stress Analysis Of Silicon Carbide Microeletromechanical Systems Using Raman Spectroscopy, Stanley J. Ness

Theses and Dissertations

During the fabrication of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), residual stress is often induced in the thin films that are deposited to create these systems. These stresses can cause the device to fail due to buckling, curling, or fracture. Government and industry are looking for ways to characterize the stress during the deposition of thin films in order to reduce or eliminate device failure. Micro-Raman spectroscopy has been successfully used to analyze poly-silicon MEMS devices made with the Multi-User MEMS Process (MUMPS trade name). Micro-Raman spectroscopy was selected because it is nondestructive, fast and has the potential for in situ stress monitoring. …
