A Growth Mixture Theory For Cartilage With Application To Growth-Related Experiments On Cartilage Explants, Stephen M. Klisch, Silvia S. Chen, Robert L. Sah, Anne Hoger

Mechanical Engineering

In this paper, we present a growth mixture model for cartilage. The main features of this model are illustrated in a simple equilibrium boundary-value problem that is chosen to illustrate how a mechanical theory of cartilage growth may be applied to growth-related experiments on cartilage explants. The cartilage growth mixture model describes the independent growth of the proteoglycan and collagen constituents due to volumetric mass deposition, which leads to the remodeling of the composition and the mechanical properties of the solid matrix. The model developed here also describes how the material constants of the collagen constituent depend on a scalar …

This thesis reports on experience with PCESjava, a collection of tools which we have developed for the purpose of aiding programmers. Particular applications optimize and instrument JAVA bytecode programs. Using these tools, we have successfully identified impediments to real-time performance in a popular JAVA collections object. Our approach here is based on automatic instruction to obtain traces that show paths whose execution time is not reasonably bounded. We also report on the application of our tool to reduce program footprint in JAVA programs by rewriting the bytecodes to occupy less space. Our transformations also improves the running time of set …

Use Of Eps-Filled Tires As Lightweight Construction Material, Sethapong Sethabouppha Apr 2003

Use Of Eps-Filled Tires As Lightweight Construction Material, Sethapong Sethabouppha

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to study the possibility of recycling discarded automobile tires as a lightweight construction material by injecting expanded polystyrene (EPS) into the hollow space of the tires. The observation from compression tests on used tires revealed that the tread wall of these tires bent toward their own center. This inward deformation should provide confining stress to the contained EPS, and thus the compressive strength of EPS-tire composite was expected to be higher than that of EPS.

To produce EPS-filled tire prototypes for this study, EPS type II, with density of 24 kg/m3, was injected into …

Output Analysis Of Configurable Port Simulation, Ravikiran Jogu Apr 2003

Output Analysis Of Configurable Port Simulation, Ravikiran Jogu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Configurable Port Simulation (CPortS) is a simulation of military cargo moving through a commercial seaport during a force deployment. CPortS simulates cargo at the individual entity level of detail. Simulation at the individual entity level generates huge amounts of output data making the output analysis difficult. To understand the reasons as to why bottlenecks occur in the process of cargo clearance, an analyst needs to be able to partition the data during analysis, not a priori. This makes the estimation of required graph generation impossible, which demands a very dynamic output analysis tool that can enable the analyst to …

Automatic Speaker Identification Using Reusable And Retrainable Binary-Pair Partitioned Neural Networks, Ashutosh Mishra Apr 2003

Automatic Speaker Identification Using Reusable And Retrainable Binary-Pair Partitioned Neural Networks, Ashutosh Mishra

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents an extension of the work previously done on speaker identification using Binary Pair Partitioned (BPP) neural networks. In the previous work, a separate network was used for each pair of speakers in the speaker population. Although the basic BPP approach did perform well and had a simple underlying algorithm, it had the obvious disadvantage of requiring an extremely large number of networks for speaker identification with large speaker populations. It also requires training of networks proportional to the square of the number of speakers under consideration, leading to a very large number of networks to be trained …

A Representation Scheme For Finite Length Strings, Guarav Tandon, Debasis Mitra Apr 2003

A Representation Scheme For Finite Length Strings, Guarav Tandon, Debasis Mitra

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

This study is an attempt to create a canonical representation scheme for finite length strings to simplify the study of the theory behind different classes of patterns and to ease the understanding of the underlying separability issues. This could then be used to determine what kinds of techniques are suitable for what class of separability (linear, multi-linear, or non-linear). This representation can then be used in intrusion detection, biological sequences, pattern recognition/classification and numerous other applications.

Fuzzy System Identification Based Upon A Novel Approach To Nonlinear Optimization, Raymond Scott Starsman Apr 2003

Fuzzy System Identification Based Upon A Novel Approach To Nonlinear Optimization, Raymond Scott Starsman

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Fuzzy systems are often used to model the behavior of nonlinear dynamical systems in process control industries because the model is linguistic in nature, uses a natural-language rule set, and because they can be included in control laws that meet the design goals. However, because the rigorous study of fuzzy logic is relatively recent, there is a shortage of well-defined and understood mechanisms for the design of a fuzzy system. One of the greatest challenges in fuzzy modeling is to determine a suitable structure, parameters, and rules that minimize an appropriately chosen error between the fuzzy system, a mathematical model, …

Variation Of Domain Formation In A 15 Nm Nife Layer Exchange Coupled With Nio Layers Of Different Thicknesses, Z.Y. Liu, Shireen Adenwalla

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

The correlation between ferromagnetic domain formation and exchange bias in a series of NiFe/NiO samples with varying NiO thicknesses has been investigated using the magneto-optic Kerr effect and magnetic force microscopy. Below a critical thickness (15 nm) of NiO, the exchange bias HE is zero and ripple domains exist in the NiFe layer. Above this critical thickness, cross-tie type domain walls appear concurrently with the appearance of exchange bias. Both the number of cross-tie domain walls and the exchange bias increase with an increase in NiO thickness, reaching a maximum at 35 nm NiO, after which both show a …

A Machine Learning Approach To Anomaly Detection, Philip K. Chan, Matthew V. Mahoney, Muhammad H. Arshad Mar 2003

A Machine Learning Approach To Anomaly Detection, Philip K. Chan, Matthew V. Mahoney, Muhammad H. Arshad

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Much of the intrusion detection research focuses on signature (misuse) detection, where models are built to recognize known attacks. However, signature detection, by its nature, cannot detect novel attacks. Anomaly detection focuses on modeling the normal behavior and identifying significant deviations, which could be novel attacks. In this paper we explore two machine learning methods that can construct anomaly detection models from past behavior. The first method is a rule learning algorithm that characterizes normal behavior in the absence of labeled attack data. The second method uses a clustering algorithm to identify outliers.

Beyond The Big Dig, Robert Turner Mar 2003

Beyond The Big Dig, Robert Turner

New England Journal of Public Policy

For more than a decade, from the day that the decision was made to put Boston’s Central Artery underground, many forward-looking planners and designers have been conjuring up visions of the mile-long street-level corridor that would replace the elevated highway, reshaping the heart of downtown. By the end of 2001, the corridor had acquired a name, the Rose Kennedy Greenway, but work was far more advanced on the traffic tunnel underground than on the open space above. These precious twenty-seven acres had the potential to flower into a magnificent, vibrant urban oasis that would become known the world over. But …

An Approach To Concept Development For Compliant Mechanisms Possessing High Coefficients Of Restitution, Brandon H. Woolley Mar 2003

An Approach To Concept Development For Compliant Mechanisms Possessing High Coefficients Of Restitution, Brandon H. Woolley

Theses and Dissertations

The design of structures and mechanisms subject to impact loading has historically involved designing in such a way as to minimize damage induced by the impact. This has historically been accomplished by absorbing and dissipating the energy of the impact. However, in some applications it is desirable to harness the energy and return it to the impacting object to maximize the coefficient of restitution (COR), resulting in large rebound velocities. The use of traditional rigid-body mechanisms to achieve high-COR mechanisms is limited by issues of friction, durability, poor strain-energy distribution and others. Compliant mechanisms do not possess the same limitations …
