Complex Low-Pass Filters, Peter Kiss, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Jack Glas May 2002

Complex Low-Pass Filters, Peter Kiss, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Jack Glas

Electrical Engineering

Quadrature zero-if transceivers suffer from the imbalance of the I and Q paths. By using a complex low-pass filter topology instead of a conventional pair of real low-pass filters, this imperfection can be reduced. Both analytical and numerical analysis show that the proposed technique is significantly more robust to circuit imperfections than the traditional architecture.

Luminescence Mechanisms In Quaternary AlXInYGa1-X-YN Materials, Mee-Yi Ryu, C. Q. Chen, E. Kuokstis, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. Asif Khan May 2002

Luminescence Mechanisms In Quaternary AlXInYGa1-X-YN Materials, Mee-Yi Ryu, C. Q. Chen, E. Kuokstis, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. Asif Khan

Faculty Publications

Low-temperature photoluminescence investigations have been carried out in the quaternary AlInGaN epilayers and AlInGaN/AlInGaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) grown by pulsedmetalorganic chemical-vapor deposition (PMOCVD). With increasing excitation power density, the emission peaks in both AlInGaN epilayers and MQWs show a strong blueshift and theirlinewidths increase. The luminescence of the samples grown by PMOCVD is attributed to recombination of carriers/excitons localized at band-tail states. We also demonstrate theluminescence properties of AlInGaN and AlGaN materials grown by a pulsed atomic-layerepitaxy and conventional MOCVD, respectively.

Development Of A Mechanistic Understanding Of High-Temperature Deformation Of Alloy Ep-823 For Transmutation Applications, Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the elevated temperature tensile properties of Alloy EP-823, a leading target material for accelerator-driven waste transmutation applications. This alloy has been proven to be an excellent structural material to contain the lead-bismuth-eutectic (LBE) nuclear coolant needed for fast spectrum operations. However, very little data exist in the open literature on the tensile properties of this alloy. The selection of Alloy EP-823 as the test material in the proposed task is based on the recommendation of our collaborator at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The test material will be thermally treated prior …

Performance And Impact From Duct Repair And Ventilation Modifications Of Two Newly Constructed Manufactured Houses Located In A Hot And Humid Climate, Florida Solar Energy Center, Charles Withers, Jr.

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Two nearly identical houses situated next to each other in Bossier City, Louisiana were studied in an effort to better understand moisture and cooling energy related problems in manufactured houses with low thermostat set-points during the cooling season. By design, the major difference between houses was the type of air conditioning units. House A had a standard split air conditioner and House B had a two-speed split air conditioner.

In an effort to make the buildings more similar, the building airtightness was adjusted until it was the same in each house, and duct leaks were sealed so that the ducts …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Samples of La0.6Sr0.4Fe3-δ with varying oxygen vacancy contents were prepared by heating them in different gas flows. Magnetization measurement showed that samples with low oxygen vacancies have a magnetic ordering temperature in the range of 300-325 K while those with 9%-12% oxygen vacancies have a magnetic ordering temperature of 800 K and higher. Mössbauer spectra at 300 K exhibit paramagnetic or weak magnetic characteristics for the N2, O2, and air-quenched samples, whereas an average hyperfine field of 52 T is found for the CO/CO2 reduced samples. The heat treatment in …

Nanofatigue Studies Of Ultrathin Hard Carbon Overcoats Used In Magnetic Storage Devices, Xiaodong Li, Bharat Bhushan May 2002

Nanofatigue Studies Of Ultrathin Hard Carbon Overcoats Used In Magnetic Storage Devices, Xiaodong Li, Bharat Bhushan

Faculty Publications

A technique to perform nanofatigue experiments was developed. This technique utilizes a depth-sensing nanoindenter with harmonic force. The nanofatigue behavior of 20 nm thick amorphous carbon coatings was studied. The contact stiffness was monitored continuously throughout the test. The abrupt decrease in the contact stiffness indicates fatigue damage has occurred. The critical load amplitude, below which no fatigue damage occurs, was identified. It was found that the filtered cathodic arc coating exhibits longer fatigue life than a direct ion beam coating. Failure mechanisms of the coatings during fatigue are also discussed in conjunction with the hardness, elastic modulus, and fracture toughness, …

Development Of A Systems Engineering Model Of The Chemical Separations Process: Quarterly Progress Report 2/16/02- 5/15/02, Yitung Chen, Randy Clarksean, Darrell Pepper

Separations Campaign (TRP)

Two activities are proposed in this Phase I task: the development of systems engineering model and the refinement of the Argonne code AMUSE (Argonne Model for Universal Solvent Extraction). The detailed systems engineering model is the start of an integrated approach to the analysis of the materials separations associated with the AAA Program. A second portion of the project is to streamline and improve an integral part of the overall systems model, which is the software package AMUSE. AMUSE analyzes the UREX process and other related solvent extraction processes and defines many of the process streams that are integral to …

Structure Of Macrodomain Walls In Polytwinned Magnets, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov May 2002

Structure Of Macrodomain Walls In Polytwinned Magnets, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

We propose a microscopic approach to the studies of magnetic configurations in hard magnets which may be conveniently used for nanoscale systems; the microstructure of the magnet is easily and naturally included in the calculations. This approach is applied to find the structure of macrodomain walls in polytwinned magnets of the CoPt family. Magnetostatic fields are small compared to the anisotropy field in these magnets; direct simulation shows that in this case the macrodomain wall is not continuous, but rather comprised of segments held together by relatively small magnetostatic forces. This segmentation is expected to have a strong effect on …

Magnetization Reversal Of Individual Nanowires With Controlled Defects, Andrei Sokolov, Renat F. Sabirianov, W. Wernsdorfer, Bernard Doudin May 2002

Magnetization Reversal Of Individual Nanowires With Controlled Defects, Andrei Sokolov, Renat F. Sabirianov, W. Wernsdorfer, Bernard Doudin

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Low temperature magnetization reversal measurements were performed on individual permalloy nanowires of diameters between 30 and 60 nm. During the electrochemical growth of the wire, a defect was induced by a short pulse in the deposition potential modifying locally the microstructure and composition. Magnetic measurements performed with micro-superconducting quantum interference devices were performed. The angular dependence of switching field revealed significant deviations from classical predictions. For specific angles, magnetization curves indicate a reversal occurring in two steps.

Genome-Wide Screening For Trait Conferring Genes Using Dna Microarrays, R. T. Gill, S. Wildt, Y. T. Yang, S. Ziesman, G. Stephanopoulos

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report a DNA microarray-based method for genome-wide monitoring of competitively grown transformants to identify genes whose overexpression confers a specific cellular phenotype. Whereas transcriptional profiling identifies differentially expressed genes that are correlated with particular aspects of the cellular phenotype, this functional genomics approach determines genes that result in a specific physiology. This parallel gene-trait mapping method consists of transforming a strain with a genomic library, enriching the cell population in transformants containing the trait conferring gene(s), and finally using DNA microarrays to simultaneously isolate and identify the enriched gene inserts. Various methods of enrichment can be used; here, genes …

Automatic Speechreading With Application To Speaker Verification, Charles C. Broun, Xiaozheng Zhang, Russell M. Mersereau, Mark A. Clements

Electrical Engineering

Speech not only conveys the linguistic information, but also characterizes the talker's identify and therefore can be used in personal authentication. While most of the speech information is contained in the acoustic channel, the lip movement during speech production also provides useful information. In this paper we investigate the effectiveness of visual speech features in a speaker veri pound sterling cation task. We pound sterling rst present the visual front-end of the automatic speechreading system. We then develop a recognition engine to train and recognize sequences of visual parameters. The experimental results based on the XM2VTS database [1] demonstrate that …

Visual Speech Feature Extraction For Improved Speech Recognition, Xiaozheng Zhang, Russell M. Mersereau, Mark A. Clements, Charles C. Broun May 2002

Visual Speech Feature Extraction For Improved Speech Recognition, Xiaozheng Zhang, Russell M. Mersereau, Mark A. Clements, Charles C. Broun

Electrical Engineering

Mainstream automatic speech recognition has focused almost exclusively on the acoustic signal. The performance of these systems degrades considerably in the real world in the presence of noise. On the other hand, most human listeners, both hearing-impaired and normal hearing, make use of visual information to improve speech perception in acoustically hostile environments. Motivated by humans' ability to lipread, the visual component is considered to yield information that is not always present in the acoustic signal and enables improved accuracy over totally acoustic systems, especially in noisy environments. In this paper, we investigate the usefulness of visual information in speech …

Novel Modeling Techniques For Tumor Diagnostics Using Pulsed Laser Sources, Mohamed Sakami, Kunal Mitra, Tuan Vo-Dinh May 2002

Novel Modeling Techniques For Tumor Diagnostics Using Pulsed Laser Sources, Mohamed Sakami, Kunal Mitra, Tuan Vo-Dinh

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, a two-dimensional transient radiation transport algorithm is developed to analyze short pulse laser transport through a tissue medium having tumors and inhomogeneities imbedded in it. Short pulse probing techniques have distinct advantages over conventional very large pulse width or cw lasers primarily due to the additional information conveyed about the tissue interior by the temporal variation of the observed signal. The distinct feature is the multiple scattering induced temporal signatures that persists for time periods greater than the duration of the source pulse and is a function of the source pulse width, the scattering/absorbing properties and nature …

Crack-Free Thick Algan Grown On Sapphire Using Aln/Algan Superlattices For Strain Management, J. P. Zhang, H. M. Wang, M. E. Gaevski, C. Q. Chen, Q. Fareed, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. Asif Khan May 2002

Crack-Free Thick Algan Grown On Sapphire Using Aln/Algan Superlattices For Strain Management, J. P. Zhang, H. M. Wang, M. E. Gaevski, C. Q. Chen, Q. Fareed, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. Asif Khan

Faculty Publications

We report on an AlN/AlGaN superlattice approach to grow high-Al-content thick n+-AlGaNlayers over c-plane sapphire substrates. Insertion of a set of AlN/AlGaN superlattices is shown to significantly reduce the biaxial tensile strain, thereby resulting in 3-μm-thick, crack-free Al0.2Ga0.8N layers. These high-quality, low-sheet-resistive layers are of key importance to avoid current crowding in quaternary AlInGaN multiple-quantum-well deep-ultraviolet light-emitting diodes over sapphire substrates.

Closed-Form Solution For The Size Of Plastic Zone In An Edge-Cracked Strip, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis May 2002

Closed-Form Solution For The Size Of Plastic Zone In An Edge-Cracked Strip, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This paper is concerned with the problem of plastic zone at the tip of an edge crack in an isotropic elastoplastic strip under anti-plane deformations. By means of complex potential and Dugdale model, the stress intensity factor and the size of plastic zone are obtained in closed-form. Furthermore, the analytic solutions for an edge crack at the free boundary of a half-space and a semi-infinite crack heading towards a free surface are determined as the limiting cases of the strip geometries. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Sufficient Conditions Used In Admittance Selection For Planar Force-Guided Assembly, Shuguang Huang, Joseph M. Schimmels May 2002

Sufficient Conditions Used In Admittance Selection For Planar Force-Guided Assembly, Shuguang Huang, Joseph M. Schimmels

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Admittance control approaches show significant promise in providing reliable force-guided assembly. An important issue in the development of these approaches is the specification of an appropriate admittance control law. This paper identifies procedures for selecting the appropriate admittance to achieve reliable planar force-guided assembly for single-point contact cases. A set of conditions that are imposed on the admittance matrix is presented. These conditions ensure that the motion that results from contact reduces part misalignment. We show that for bounded misalignment, if the conditions are satisfied for a finite number of contact configurations, the system ensures that force guidance is achieved …

Arrival Rate Identification For A Class Of Traffic Signal Control Problem, Xiao-Hua Yu, Allen R. Stubberud May 2002

Arrival Rate Identification For A Class Of Traffic Signal Control Problem, Xiao-Hua Yu, Allen R. Stubberud

Electrical Engineering

Setting signals at traffic intersections to reduce congestion is one of the most challenging problems in traffic management. To find the optimal control strategy, specific information of the traffic flows passing through intersections must be provided in advance. It has been shown that the Markovian decision control theory can be successfully applied to solve traffic signal control problems, when both the state transition probabilities and the one-step reward function are known. In this paper, an online parameter identification algorithm is investigated for adaptive Markovian decision control at an isolated traffic intersection with unknown vehicle arrival rates. The authors give a …

Characterization Of Structural Changes In Thermally Enhanced Kevlar-29® Fiber, James W. Downing Jr. May 2002

Characterization Of Structural Changes In Thermally Enhanced Kevlar-29® Fiber, James W. Downing Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory investigation was to elucidate the structural mechanism accounting for the enhanced compressive properties of heat-treated Kevlar-29® fibers. A novel theory was set forth that hydrogen bond disruption and concurrent misorientation of crystallites may account for the observed augmentation of compressive properties. To examine the said theory, virgin Kevlar-29® fibers were characterized by Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) in an effort to determine if crosslinking and/or hydrogen bond disruption was responsible for the improved behavior in compression. Additionally, Kevlar-29® fibers that had been exposed to treatment temperatures of 400, 440, and 470 °C …
