A Novel Readout Method For Focal Plane Array Imaging In The Presence Of Large Dark Current, Changqing Qiu Jan 1999

A Novel Readout Method For Focal Plane Array Imaging In The Presence Of Large Dark Current, Changqing Qiu

Dissertations

This research was an investigation of a novel readout method for focal plane array (FPA) optical imaging, especially for very sensitive detectors with large dark current. The readout method is based on periodically blocking the optical input enabling the removal of the dark current integration from the output. The research demonstrated that it is feasible to modulate the optical input with the designed readout circuit and thus achieve longer signal integration time to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio.

Study of a proposed circuit model showed that in theory the correlated readout method could increase the output voltage swing and reduce the …

Investigation Of Thermal Contact Resistance At A Plastic-Metal Interface In Injection Molding, Lakshminarayanan Sridhar Jan 1999

Investigation Of Thermal Contact Resistance At A Plastic-Metal Interface In Injection Molding, Lakshminarayanan Sridhar

Dissertations

Thermal contact resistance (TCR) at the plastic-metal interface is one of the parameters required for the simulation of plastic processing techniques such as injection molding. However, the available data is both unreliable and insufficient due to the difficulties involved in measuring this parameter. The effects of thermal contact resistance on the heat transfer in plastics processing with particular reference to injection molding of thermoplastics is investigated using combined experimental measurement techniques, parametric studies and numerical analysis.

TCR under steady state conditions has been determined experimentally at typical thermoplastic-mold metal interfaces for an amorphous and a semi-crystalline polymer using a one-dimensional …

Metrics For Estimating The Product Disassembly Effort, Pradeep Kumar Yedlarajaiah Jan 1999

Metrics For Estimating The Product Disassembly Effort, Pradeep Kumar Yedlarajaiah

Theses

The concepts of environmentally friendly manufacturing and ecological reuse of materials have resulted in an increase in the number of disposed products that are disassembled. Moreover, the imposition of EPA regulations is forcing companies to invest in methods for protecting the environrnent. The first strategy in this vein is material recycling. The issue of recycling became important because of the limited landfill space, diminishing natural resources, environmental pollution due to dumping of products containing hazardous materials. Likewise, it is projected that the cost of extracting materials from natural resources is going to be much more expensive when compared to reclaiming …

System Simulation And Modeling Of Electronics Demanufacturing Facilities, Ketan Giridhar Limaye

Theses

Over the last decade, pressure on the electronic industry has been increasing as concerns for product take-back, product stewardship and global warming have continued to grow. Various end-of-life management options are being expanded including recycling to recapture values from basic materials through reengineering and recovery of subassemblies and individual components for remanufacturing. While progress has been reported on life cycle assessment (LCA), disassembly planning, design for disassembly, and design for environment (DFE), very little research has been focused on demanufacturing from a systems perspective.

The objective of this thesis is to build an interface between the user who knows the …

Evaluation Of Rotating Fluidized Bed As A Dry Coater, William Christopher Dunphy

Theses

Coating of particles is normally carried out with the use of environmentally unfriendly solvents. Development of dry coating methods is therefore quite important.

A Rotating Fluidized Bed was constructed, instrumented and verified as to operation. Twelve coating experiments were carried out with PMMA 200μm mean diameter as host and alumina 0.25μm primary particle size as guest with the RFB being operated in the fully fluidized range.

In all analyzed samples, coating was observed. Analysis was carried out on the qualitative basis by SEM and EDX.

Fluorescence Spectroscopy For The Characterization Of Humic And Fulvic Acids And Their Disinfection By-Products Formation Potential, Ishvinder H. Kochar Jan 1999

Fluorescence Spectroscopy For The Characterization Of Humic And Fulvic Acids And Their Disinfection By-Products Formation Potential, Ishvinder H. Kochar

Theses

Natural Organic Matter (NOM) plays a major role in the formation of undesirable organic by-products following disinfection/oxidation of drinking water. It is suspected that most precursors to disinfection by-products (DBPs) are humic although non-humic substances have not been studied and are suspected of also contributing to DBPs. NOM reacts with many of the disinfectants used to treat drinking water, such as chlorine, chioramine, and ozone, to form a variety of DBPs. Many of these DBPs have adverse health effects in humans (i.e. carcinogenic or mutagenic effects). The primary DBPs of concern include the trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), and haloacetonitrile …

Model And Clinical Device Development For Noninvasive Diagnosis Of Low Back Pain And Dysfunction, Ravi Patraju Jan 1999

Model And Clinical Device Development For Noninvasive Diagnosis Of Low Back Pain And Dysfunction, Ravi Patraju

Theses

Millions of people suffer from acute or chronic low back pain. In order for proper treatment to be administered, a patient must receive an accurate diagnosis. Therefore, it is critical to develop an objective model to measure the motion and any dysfunction of a patient's low back. Only then can a physician effectively implement the correct therapy and measure its effectiveness through follow-up to minimize or eliminate low back pain.

Numerous cadaveric, active and passive studies have been done to understand the mechanics of low back disorders. However, only living human subjects suffer from low back pain and therefore cadaveric …

Characterization Of Tantalum Coatings On Steel Substrates, Prabha Shivaramkrishnan Jan 1999

Characterization Of Tantalum Coatings On Steel Substrates, Prabha Shivaramkrishnan

Theses

Sputtered tantalum can be used as an effective corrosion resistant barrier if the coating is continuous, free from defects and is adherent to the substrate it is intended to protect. For corrosion-applications 100% bcc phase tantalum is preferred. X-ray diffraction results indicate that sputtered tantalum deposits typically contain a mixture of bcc and beta phases. Depending on the deposition conditions the morphology of tantalum coatings as studied using scanning electron microscopes can vary from irregular, dendritic structure to a defined step type structure. A "cauliflower type" structure has also been observed. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurement was used to …

Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition (Lpcvd) Of Titanium Nitride : Synthesis And Characterization, Sameer Narsinha Dharmadhikari

Theses

Titanium tetrachioride and ammonia were used as precursors in a Jow pressure chemical vapor deposition process to deposit titanium nitride films on silicon wafers. The process was carried out at temperatures from 450 to 850 C and the activation energy for the reaction was determined. The order of the reaction, with respect to the partial pressures of the reactant gases, was determined by carrying out the reaction at varying partial pressures of the reactant gases. The following rate equation was established for the reaction:

rate = 4.35*10-5exp(-5150/T)*(PNH3)1.37(PTicl4)-0.42

The titanium nitride thin …

An Interactive System For The Estimation Of Emissivity Of A Wafer In A Rapid Thermal Processing Chamber, Maurizio Fulco Jan 1999

An Interactive System For The Estimation Of Emissivity Of A Wafer In A Rapid Thermal Processing Chamber, Maurizio Fulco

Theses

Rapid thermal processing (RTP) is a method of thermally processing wafers for the manufacture of integrated circuits. During the thermal processing of wafers, it is essential that the wafer temperature follow a pre-specified temperature trajectory and that the temperature across the wafer be uniform especially at high temperatures. To ensure that the above objectives of RTP temperature control be met at any time during the process, the estimation of some parameters of the process is of fundamental importance in the design of the control system.

This thesis demonstrates the implementation of an interactive software system in which the emissivity of …

Design, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Shared-Memory Parellel Processing System (Smpps), Eric H. Staub Jan 1999

Design, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Shared-Memory Parellel Processing System (Smpps), Eric H. Staub

Theses

As technology reaches its limits of improvements in microprocessor processing speeds, scientists and engineers have to find viable solutions to meet ever-increasing demands for faster processing speed. One such solution is parallel processing. No longer does one have to wait on sequential operations. A specific task can be split in sub-tasks that can run simultaneously, thus reducing the overall execution time of the task.

The design and implementation of these systems is crucial to the effectiveness of parallel systems. A dual-processor SMPPS was designed and implemented in order to demonstrate how multiple processors are a viable solution to increasing the …

Room Temperature Fatique Response Of Γ-Tial To Impact Damage, Trevor S. Harding, J. Wayne Jones, P. S. Steif, T. M. Pollock

Materials Engineering

Gamma based titanium aluminides have received considerable attention recently as candidate materials in gas turbine applications, particularly low pressure turbine blades (1–3). Their low density and high specific stiffness, result in potentially significant weight savings in structures such as gas turbine engines if substituted for current materials. Two γ-TiAl microstructures are predominately identified in the literature: a lamellar microstructure consisting of alternating plates of γ and α2, and a duplex microstructure consisting of equiaxed γ grains and lamellar colonies (3,4). Lamellar alloys generally exhibit better fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth resistance (5–7). Duplex alloys, on the other …

Worn Tool Forces Based On Ploughing Stresses, Daniel Waldorf, Shiv G. Kapoor, Richard E. Devor Jan 1999

Worn Tool Forces Based On Ploughing Stresses, Daniel Waldorf, Shiv G. Kapoor, Richard E. Devor

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Recent work in modeling of the ploughing mechanism in basic metal machining may provide a means of estimating the additional forces to be expected when cutting with a worn tool. The results predict the rubbing stresses due to the finite radius of an unworn tool edge. Since an unworn tool can be thought of as a worn tool with a wear land width VB = 0, these stresses can make up part of a strategy for predicting the additional forces incurred by a worn tool. This paper develops a wear model by proposing a technique for utilizing the stresses predicted …

Photoreflectance Investigations Of The Bowing Parameter In Algan Alloys Lattice-Matched To Gan, Tomasz J. Ochalski, Bernard Gil, Pierre Lefebvre, Nicolas Grandjean, Mathieu Leroux, Jean Massies, Shuji Nakamura, Hadis Morkoç Jan 1999

Photoreflectance Investigations Of The Bowing Parameter In Algan Alloys Lattice-Matched To Gan, Tomasz J. Ochalski, Bernard Gil, Pierre Lefebvre, Nicolas Grandjean, Mathieu Leroux, Jean Massies, Shuji Nakamura, Hadis Morkoç

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Room temperature photoreflectance investigations have been performed on a series of AlGaN layers grown both by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy and molecular beam epitaxy on c-plane sapphire substrates. The aluminum composition was ranging between 0% and 20%, and was determined independently in the different growth laboratories, by various methods. It is found that within the experimental uncertainty, there is no detectable bowing parameter in these alloys. This contradicts some previous experimental investigations and confirms other ones.
