Oxygen Permeation Through Composite Oxide-Ion And Electronic Conductors, Kevin Huang, Michael Schroeder, John B. Goodenough May 1999

Oxygen Permeation Through Composite Oxide-Ion And Electronic Conductors, Kevin Huang, Michael Schroeder, John B. Goodenough

Faculty Publications

Oxygen permeation through composites consisting of four well-known oxide-ion conductors and a noble metal, Pd or Ag, is reported. The oxides were Zr0.9Y0.1O1.95 (YSZ), (Bi1.75Y0.25O3)0.95(CeO2)0.05 (BYC5), Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (SSC), and La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.83Mg0.17O2.815 (LSGM). The results show that (BYC5 + Ag) yields the highest oxygen permeation flux, but the composite deteriorates with time. The composites (SSC + Pd), (LSGM + Pd), and (YSZ + Pd) give stable, but relatively lower oxygen permeation flux …

Modeling The High-Speed Switching Of Far-Infrared Radiation By Photoionization In A Semiconductor, Thomas E. Wilson May 1999

Modeling The High-Speed Switching Of Far-Infrared Radiation By Photoionization In A Semiconductor, Thomas E. Wilson

Physics Faculty Research

Data from an earlier study [T. Vogel et al., Appl. Opt. 31, 329 (1992)] on the subnanosecond switching of 119-μm radiation in high-resistivity silicon by pulsed UV laser radiation, is compared with a refined one-dimensional numerical multilayer model accounting for the generation, recombination, and diffusion of the free carriers on the resulting far-infrared optical properties of the silicon. The inclusion of recent measurements for carrier-density and temperature-dependent transport parameters leads to improved agreement between experiment and theory.

Anti-Blooming Nightvision: Extending Global Dynamic Range By Neural Network Image Fusion, Daniel L. Schuster May 1999

Anti-Blooming Nightvision: Extending Global Dynamic Range By Neural Network Image Fusion, Daniel L. Schuster

Dissertations and Theses

Sensor saturation in the presence of bright objects can create a non-restorable loss of image information as the spatial gradient tends to zero. Blooming is an attendant morphological corruption of image data that plagues quantum well sensors, and in particular, low-light Charge-Coupled Devices (CCD's) used for nightvision applications. A novel application of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks has shown promise as a means for patching gain/brightness adjusted short exposure frame detail into the bloomed regions of long exposure image frames. A computer-tethered CCD camera was used to capture robust target images, at different exposures, in a controlled light-box environment to …

The Testing And The Automation Of Dark Current, Photoresponse And Responsivity Measurements For On-Wafer Metal Semiconductor Metal (W-Msm) Photodetectors, Tiffany Evette Monroe

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

This paper presents the testing and the automation of dark current, photoresponse, and responsivity measurements for W-MSM photodetectors. The testing phase of this particular photodetector is performed in order to compare manual measurement results with automated measurement results done in Lab VIEW. The automation phase is performed in order to take measurements quickly and efficiently using Lab VIEW programs which imitate the functions of actual instruments used to take dark current, photoresponse, and responsivity measurements. So far, only the dark current measurements can be automated. However, in the future, Lab VIEW programs will be written in order to automate the …

Resonant Tank Motor Model For Voltage Reflection Simulations With Pwm Drives, Davia W. Schlegel, Glenn T. Wrate, Russ Kerkman, Gary Skibinski May 1999

Resonant Tank Motor Model For Voltage Reflection Simulations With Pwm Drives, Davia W. Schlegel, Glenn T. Wrate, Russ Kerkman, Gary Skibinski

Conference Papers in Published Proceedings

Reflected wave transient voltages that are impressed on drive output cables and low voltage AC induction motors are normally simulated with steep fronted dv/dt pulse waveforms from PWM voltage source inverters. System simulation arises from a need to correlate reflected wave peak voltage and risetime with the dielectric insulation capability of both the motor and cable. To obtain reasonable results, accurate models of each component must be employed. This investigation concentrates on parameter identification for a high frequency resonant tank motor model from fractional to several hundred horsepower.

Variable Angle Of Incidence Analysis Of Magneto-Optic Multilayers, William A. Mcgahan, Liang-Yao Chen, John A. Woollam May 1999

Variable Angle Of Incidence Analysis Of Magneto-Optic Multilayers, William A. Mcgahan, Liang-Yao Chen, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We have applied the technique of variable angle of incidence spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE) to the analysis of multilayered magneto-optic structures. With this instrument we measure the complete pseudodielectric tensor (diagonal and off-diagonal elements) for the sample of interest at variable angles of incidence. We have also developed computer software to perform a best-fit analysis of the measured data, providing optical constants, Voigt parameters, and layer thicknesses for the individual layers in the sample. Additionally, given an estimate of the material parameters, this software will provide an estimate of the optimum spectral range and angles of incidence for accurate characterization of …

Directivity Patterns Of Acoustic Radiation From Bowed Violins, Lily M. Wang, Courtney B. Burroughs May 1999

Directivity Patterns Of Acoustic Radiation From Bowed Violins, Lily M. Wang, Courtney B. Burroughs

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Directivity patterns of acoustic radiation have been measured in the far-field of a violin, excited with an open-frame mechanical bowing machine. Analysis of the directivity patterns confirms that, at frequencies below 600 Hz, the violin radiates omnidirectionally, while above 600 Hz, certain trends are apparent as the patterns become increasingly complex. It is noted that when different strings are excited, the far-field radiation patterns observed at nearly the same frequency are similar, even in higher frequency ranges where modal overlap is high. When the difference in frequency between two directivity patterns exceeds some fraction of a semitone, though, the measured …

Fdtd Modeling Of Emi Antennas, Motoshi Tanaka, Wei Cui, Xiao Luo, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Richard E. Dubroff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) method is used for modeling EMI antenna geometries to anticipate EMI problems in high-speed digital designs. FDTD is well-suited to modeling large-scale geometries such as cables that might be driven against PCB ground planes as a result of a noise voltage that appears at the connector. Three specific cases are addressed herein including a simple cable driven against a PCB ground, coupling between a high-speed digital and I/O line that drives a cable against the PCB, and the finite impedance of the PCB reference plane that results in an effective noise source that drives the PCB …

Close Formation Flight Control, Andrew W. Proud May 1999

Close Formation Flight Control, Andrew W. Proud

Theses and Dissertations

In this research the close formation flight control problem is addressed. The formation consists of a lead and wing aircraft, where the wing flies in close formation with the lead, such that the lead's vortices produce aerodynamic coupling effects, and a reduction in the formation's drag is achieved. A controller, i.e., a formation-hold autopilot for the wing aircraft, is designed such that the formation's geometry is maintained in the face of lead aircraft maneuvers. In the formation flight control system, the wing and lead aircraft dynamics are coupled due to kinematic effects, and, in the case of close formations, additional …

Two Approaches To Critical Path Scheduling For A Heterogeneous Environment, Guangxia Liu May 1999

Two Approaches To Critical Path Scheduling For A Heterogeneous Environment, Guangxia Liu

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Advances in computing and networking technologies are making large scale distributed heterogeneous computing a reality. Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO) is a class of applications that is being addressed under this paradigm. It consists of multiple heterogeneous modules interacting with each other to solve an overall design problem. An efficient implementation of such an application requires scheduling heterogeneous modules (with different computing and disk 1/0 requirements) on a heterogeneous set of resources (with different CPU, memory, disk IO specifications).

Given a set of tasks and a set of resources, an optimal schedule of the tasks on the resources is very hard to …

The unsteady state simulation of a set of industrial fixed-bed reactors is presented. The catalytic dehydrogenation of 1-butene into 1-3-butadiene is selected as case study. These reactors operate under reaction-regeneration cycles. Each stage of the process, i.e., dehydrogenation (deactivation by coking), steam purge, oxidative regeneration and evacuation, is simulated by means of the corresponding dynamic model. The kinetic parameters used in the dehydrogenation and regeneration stages for a Cr2O3/Al2O3 catalyst are taken from the literature. The performance of the reactors is investigated for two different operation modes: conventional …

Bicycle Cordon Count Pilot Study, Lisa Aultman-Hall

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky State Bicycle Coordinator is tasked with a difficult problem: planning for and supporting the needs of Kentucky cyclists. Unfortunately, very little quantitative information on the number of cyclists or their travel patterns has been collected in Kentucky. There is a pressing need to develop an efficient and low cost means to collect broad and useful data to support the bicycle program in Kentucky. Although some other jurisdictions include bicycles as vehicles in their traffic counting programs, Kentucky does not. Several complications make counting bicycles difficult: they cannot easily be detected by automatic counting devices, they travel in different …

Auctions on the Internet can involve not only consumers, but also businesses. They can form dynamically and enable the exchange of goods much as stock exchanges manage the buying and selling of securities. But because auctions have a wide scope and a short lifetime, the opportunistic behavior needed for successful interaction requires agents to both participate in and manage auctions. The article focuses on the use of software agents in such Internet based auctions

The exploiting of water resources in developing countries is fundamental for stabilizing population growth, and promoting efficient agriculture. The development of water resources allows the utilization of modern irrigation systems and methodologies.

Recently developed methods to predict runoff from rainfall data are applied to a Bolivian watershed. A study in Honduras yielded a good response to the method that utilizes Moisture Availability Index (MAI) to predict runoff, but the coefficients of that relation could not be related to MAI or to the difference between average weather station elevation and average basin elevation in the Rio Grande Upper Basin in Bolivia. …
