Excitation Of The High-Q-Factor Whispering Gallery Modes In The Hemispherical Dielectric Resonator With The Cylinder Shield, Sergey Kharkovsky, V. V. Kutuzov, A. E. Kogut Jan 1999

Excitation Of The High-Q-Factor Whispering Gallery Modes In The Hemispherical Dielectric Resonator With The Cylinder Shield, Sergey Kharkovsky, V. V. Kutuzov, A. E. Kogut

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A hollow metal cylinder with a semicircle in the base is used as the shield of a hemispherical dielectric resonator with whispering gallery (WG) modes. It is shown that the spectrum of the WG modes of this resonator is clearer than the spectrum of a similar resonator with a hemispherical shield. It is determined that the high-Q-factor WG modes are excited in the proposed resonator by the coupling slot on the mirror. Their fields are localized in the dielectric. The frequency dependence of the Q-factor value is measured. A good conformity of this experimental dependence with the analytic dependence is …

The Dynamics Of Rotor With Rubbing, Jerzy T. Sawicki, Joe Padovan, Rabih Al-Khatib Jan 1999

The Dynamics Of Rotor With Rubbing, Jerzy T. Sawicki, Joe Padovan, Rabih Al-Khatib

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents the description of some phenomena associated with dynamic behavior of rotors interacting with stationary components. Numerical simulations show rotor vibration spectrum rich in subharmonic, quasi-periodic, and chaotic vibrations. The nonlinear calculation techniques are applied to demonstrate the changes of the vibration patterns for different operating conditions. Some conclusions are discussed with regard to unique characteristics of rub-induced rotor response, initial conditions, as well as appropriate ranges of system parameters. Of special interest are the changes in the apparent nonlinearity of the system dynamics as rubs are induced at different rotor speeds. In particular, starting with 2nd order …

Analysis Of A Lithium/Thionyl Chloride Battery Under Moderate-Rate Discharge, Mukul Jain, Ganesan Nagasubramanian, Rudolph G. Jungst, John W. Weidner Jan 1999

Analysis Of A Lithium/Thionyl Chloride Battery Under Moderate-Rate Discharge, Mukul Jain, Ganesan Nagasubramanian, Rudolph G. Jungst, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

A one-dimensional mathematical model of a spirally wound lithium/thionyl chloride primary battery is developed and used for parameter estimation and design studies. The model formulation is based on the fundamental conservation laws using porous electrode theory and concentrated solution theory. The model is used to estimate the transference number, the diffusion coefficient, and the kinetic parameters for the reactions at the anode and the cathode as a function of temperature. These parameters are obtained by fitting the simulated capacity and average cell voltage to experimental data over a wide range of temperatures (–55 to 49°C) and discharge loads (10-250 ). …

Determination Of The Lithium Ion Diffusion Coefficient In Graphite, Ping Yu, Branko N. Popov, James A. Ritter, Ralph E. White Jan 1999

Determination Of The Lithium Ion Diffusion Coefficient In Graphite, Ping Yu, Branko N. Popov, James A. Ritter, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A complex impedance model for spherical particles was used to determine the lithium ion diffusion coefficient in graphite as a function of the state of charge (SOC) and temperature. The values obtained range from of 1.12 × 10–10 to 6.51 × 10–11 cm2/s at 25°C for 0 and 30% SOC, respectively, and for 0% SOC, the value at 55°C was 1.35 × 10–10 cm2/s. The conventional potentiostatic intermittent titration technique (PITT) and Warburg impedance approaches were also evaluated, and the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques were exposed

A Compensated Acoustic Actuator For Systems With Strong Dynamic Pressure Coupling, Charles Birdsong, Clark J. Radcliffe Jan 1999

A Compensated Acoustic Actuator For Systems With Strong Dynamic Pressure Coupling, Charles Birdsong, Clark J. Radcliffe

Mechanical Engineering

This study improves the performance of a previously developed acoustic actuator in the presence of an acoustic duct system with strong pressure coupling. The speaker dynamics and the acoustic duct dynamics are first modeled separately. The two systems are then coupled, and the resulting system is modeled. A velocity sensor is developed and used in feedback compensation. The resulting speaker system has minimal magnitude and phase variation over a 20–200 Hz bandwidth. These conclusions are verified through experimental results.

A New Technique For Estimating Confidence Intervals On Dea Efficiency Estimates, Janice Forrester, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

A new approach to chance constrained DEA is described and experimental results are given for calculating a confidence band for the estimated production function. This allows an interval containing the most likely production function, to be specified with a predetermined level of confidence.

Using Data Envelopment Analysis For Evaluating Alternative Software Development Process Configurations, Timothy R. Anderson, Peter K. Ghavami Jan 1999

Using Data Envelopment Analysis For Evaluating Alternative Software Development Process Configurations, Timothy R. Anderson, Peter K. Ghavami

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Summary form only given as follows. The goal of achieving better software depends on improvements in software development processes. This paper provides a nonparametric, quantitative methodology for evaluating alternative software development process configurations as a tool for process improvement. The methodology uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) for comparing the impact of varying degrees of software inspection on project schedule, cost and quality. Since every phase of the development process can be inspected at varying levels, a large number of process combinations become possible. Thus a manager's job to compare and select an efficient process configuration can become tedious. This is …

A Comparison Of Efficiency Measurement Using Data Envelopment Analysis And Regression In The Utility Industry, Janice Forrester, Timothy R. Anderson Jan 1999

A Comparison Of Efficiency Measurement Using Data Envelopment Analysis And Regression In The Utility Industry, Janice Forrester, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

It is the intent of this paper to discuss the theoretical differences between the manner in which regression and data envelopment analysis (DEA) separate variation into that which is caused by noise and that caused by inefficiency. It examines the empirical results of independent studies, one that used regression and one that used DEA. The studies were performed one year apart by independent teams using the same data and responding to the same questions. Both studies focus on monitoring the efficiency of the electric utility providers in light of deregulation

A Case Study Of Bioengineering In America: Profits, Risks And Standards Of Value In The Commercialization Of Monsanto Company's Newleaf Potato, Bridget Lyons, Teresa Ralabate, Nadhim Frangul

WCBT Faculty Publications

Last year, approximately 45 million acres of American farmland were planted with crops that had been genetically engineered to either produce their own pesticides, or withstand herbicides. The long and short-term effects of this biotechnology on humans and the environment, are being studied, but remain unknown. Leading the way in the field of bioengineered crops is the Missouri-based Monsanto Company. Monsanto believes that current agricultural practices are inconsistent with sustainable development. The NewLeaf potato is one of three products Monsanto has created to feed the growing world population. The genetically engineered crop produces, in every cell of the plant, a …

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel Jan 1999

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method has gained tremendous popularity in the past decade as a tool for solving Maxwell's equations. Phased Array Antennas find several applications including mobile communications ( cellular, personal communication systems and networks), satellite communications, global positioning system (GPS), aeronautical and radar systems. This dissertation describes the application of the FDTD method for calculating broadband characteristics of finite-sized phased array antennas consisting of microstrip elements fed with coaxial probes.

The characterization of such antennas is dependent upon the development of simulation tools that can accurately model general topologies including wires, dielectrics, conductors lumped elements and metallic strips. …

Personal Ontologies, Michael N. Huhns, Larry M. Stevens

Faculty Publications

Corporations can suffer from too much information, and it is often inaccessible, inconsistent, and incomprehensible. The corporate solution entails knowledge management techniques and data warehouses. The paper discusses the use of the personal ontology. The promising approach is an organization scheme based on a model of an office and its information, an ontology, coupled with the proper tools for using it.

Benevolent Agents, Michael N. Huhns, Abdulla Mohamed

Faculty Publications

Some agents roaming the Web these days are benevolent-for example, they may clean up stalled or failed database transactions, or share query results that may have cost substantial resources to acquire and might consume more to share. The Agent Behavior Testbed is a tool for studying the economics of agent altruism. As more agents hit the Internet, benevolence and cooperation will help with overall efficiency and productivity. The paper discusses benevolent agents on the Web.

Networking Embedded Agents, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

Most of us will soon be managing an intranet in our homes, though we might not realize it. We might also be surprised at the devices that will be networked together. Just about every electrical device now contains one or more microprocessors. Designers typically find this a cost-effective way to provide device functionality, even when much of a processor's power is unnecessary or unused. For example, my coffee maker contains a processor, even though the appliance needn't be very smart and wastes most of its CPU cycles. Nevertheless, it is cheaper to include a general-purpose microprocessor than to incorporate custom …

Negotiating For Goods And Services, Michael N. Huhns, Anuj K. Malhotra Jan 1999

Negotiating For Goods And Services, Michael N. Huhns, Anuj K. Malhotra

Faculty Publications

Can a negotiation protocol be both fair and “envy-free” when more than two agents are involved? The authors consider how envy-free apportioning is more difficult than fair apportioning, but both can help to manage critical resources. They discuss an envy-free protocol and agent-based Web auctions.
