Simulated Thermal Performance Of A Solar Heated Floor, Michael F. Kocher, James A. Deshazer, Gerald R. Bodman
Simulated Thermal Performance Of A Solar Heated Floor, Michael F. Kocher, James A. Deshazer, Gerald R. Bodman
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
A low cost, simple solar heating system consisting of an active collector with an In-Floor Heat Distribution and Storage (IFHDS) system was developed in response to the energy crisis of the 1970s. A two-dimensional finite difference model was developed and used to simulate the performance of IFHDS system cross-sections. Simulation runs were conducted with a steady-periodic model for the temperature of the solar-heated air in the IFHDS system cross-section. The steady periodic simulation results indicated IFHDS system energy efficiency increases with decreasing air temperature in the room above the IFHDS system, peak temperature of the solar-heated air in the IFHDS …
Hoph Bifurcation In Viscous, Low Speed Flows About An Airfoil With Structural Coupling, Mark J. Lutton
Hoph Bifurcation In Viscous, Low Speed Flows About An Airfoil With Structural Coupling, Mark J. Lutton
Theses and Dissertations
The locations of Hopf bifurcation points associated with the viscous, incompressible flow about a NACA 0012 airfoil with structural coupling are computed for very low Reynolds numbers (<2000). A semi-implicit, first-order-accurate time integration algorithm is employed to solve the stream function-vorticity form of the Navier-Stokes equations. The formulation models the inclusion of simple structural elements affixed to the airfoil and captures the resulting airfoil motion. The equations describing the airfoil motion are integrated in time using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta algorithm. The dissertation is divided into two parts. In part one, numerical experiments are performed in the laminar regime to determine if the structural model of the airfoil has an effect upon the location of the Hopf bifurcation point when compared with the fixed airfoil. Results are reported for a variety of structural characteristics, including variations of torsional and linear spring constants, inertial properties, structural coupling, and structural damping. The structure of the solution space is explored by means of phase plots. In part two, the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is implemented to model turbulent flow. A numerical effort is made to predict the onset of unsteady flow.

The purpose of this thesis was to determine (both experimentally and analytically) the initiation and progression of failure, stress-strain response, and the failure loads of Graphite/Polyetheretherketone (Gr/PEEK) laminates, incorporating a centrally located circular discontinuity, loading in axial compression at room temperature. The laminates studied were (0°)16,(90°)16, (0°/90°)4S, (± 45°)4S, and (0°/±45°/90°)2S. The specimens were loaded within a Boeing Open Hole Compression Fixture. The micromechanical failure modes were identified using a Scanning Electron Microscope. The analytical progression of failure was predicted using a nonlinear finite element code developed by Dr. R.S. …
Design Of A Hardware Discrete Event Simulation Coprocessor, David W. Daniel
Design Of A Hardware Discrete Event Simulation Coprocessor, David W. Daniel
Theses and Dissertations
A hardware discrete event simulation (DES) coprocessor was designed to eliminate synchronization overhead as a possible bottleneck. The target architecture is an eight node Intel iPSC/2 Hypercube, but this design has application to future CPU designs that wish to incorporate on-chip architectural features to better support parallel processor synchronization. A structural description of a general-purpose DES hardware coprocessor is given with approximately 90 percent of the components written at the gate level. The remaining components use low-level behavioral descriptions. While the DES coprocessor microcode implements the Chandy-Misra protocol, general-purpose support for a wide-range of protocols was a primary hardware design …

Afitbunki: A Modified Iterative Code To Unfold Neutron Spectra From Bonner Sphere Detector Data, Sean C. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
The neutron spectrum unfolding code BUNKI, developed at the Naval Research Laboratory in 1983, was modified to incorporate a finer energy group structure, seven initial-guess spectra, and new dose conversion factors. The modified code, AFITBUNKI, unfolds spectra into 54 energy groups between 10-7 and 14.92 MeV. The code calculates fluence, absorbed dose, percent of effective dose equivalent, and percent of ambient dose equivalent as a function of neutron energy. Additionally, AFITBUNKI calculates total energy-integrated fluence (Φ), absorbed dose (D), dose equivalent (H), effective quality factor (Q), ambient dose (D*), both ICRP Publication 26- and ICRP Publication 60-based ambient dose …

A Statistical Analysis Of Terrorism And Instability In Latin America, Juan A. Hurtado
Theses and Dissertations
In this research the effect of socioeconomic factors on terrorism and government instability in Latin America are studied. A commonly held opinion is that terrorism and instability are caused by repressive conditions. The objective of this research was to generate a methodology to forecast terrorism and instability given certain socioeconomic indicators. This methodology was generated for individual countries, two groups of countries, and a composite developing country. A set of 28 socioeconomic factors were evaluated and reduced based on correlation analysis. Patterns of terrorism and instability were investigated through data analysis and factor analysis. Multiple regression was used to develop …
Spartan Ii: An Instructional High Resolution Land Combat Model, Edwin H. Harris Jr.
Spartan Ii: An Instructional High Resolution Land Combat Model, Edwin H. Harris Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This project improved SPARTAN, a high resolution land combat model demonstrator. SPARTAN was originally developed as a hands-on trainer for land combat modeling students because there were no models specifically designed to teach the analysts how the models function. SPARTAN is built to demonstrate the techniques used in the current generation of US Army high resolution models. Like the original, the model is primarily a small scale attrition (both direct and indirect fire) model. The model represents 12 soldiers involved in the following processes: target search, target selection, direct fire engagement, indirect fire engagement, movement, reaction to fire, obstacle breaching, …
Including Maximum Sustained Wind Speed In A Time Series Model To Forecast Hurricane Movement, Timothy B. Mott
Including Maximum Sustained Wind Speed In A Time Series Model To Forecast Hurricane Movement, Timothy B. Mott
Theses and Dissertations
Techniques for applying time series fundamentals to forecasting hurricane movement are thoroughly examined in this research. The objectives are: (1) to modify Dr. Thomas Curry's threshold autoregressive time series model to improve its ability to forecast hurricane movement, (2) to forecast the maximum sustained wind speed for a hurricane, and (3) to identify if wind speed should be included as an explanatory variable to aid in forecasting hurricane movement. Eleven different models to predict the latitude, longitude and maximum sustained wind speed are compared and contrasted with Curry's bivariate time series model. The results showed the modifications allow significant forecasting …
Automating The Satellite Range Scheduling Process, Timothy D. Gooley
Automating The Satellite Range Scheduling Process, Timothy D. Gooley
Theses and Dissertations
Satellite range scheduling is a complex problem that involves scheduling satellite supports in which a satellite and a specific remote tracking station are assigned a time window during which they communicate with each other. As the number and complexity of satellite supports continue to increase, more pressure is placed on the current manual system to efficiently generate a schedule. The objective of this research was to develop a methodology that will automate the generation of the initial 24 hour schedule. The goal of the algorithm developed was to schedule as many conflict free supports as possible. A two phased approach …

An Analysis Of The Ability Of Commercial Wargames To Fulfill The Education Requirements Of The Air Force Wargaming Center, Scott Goehring
An Analysis Of The Ability Of Commercial Wargames To Fulfill The Education Requirements Of The Air Force Wargaming Center, Scott Goehring
Theses and Dissertations
It has been the contention of some that current commercial wargames could possibly fulfill the education requirements addressed by the Air Force Wargaming Center. The Wargaming Center, lacking the opportunity to conduct a thorough, in-house analysis of these commercial wargames, requested an independent evaluation be performed. This thesis identifies potential commercial wargames and provides an analysis of those wargames to determine their ability to educate senior military officers in the application of aerospace power. In addition, this thesis establishes a set of Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs) against which future wargames can be easily evaluated. The MOEs were developed from the …
Models For The Optimization Of Air Refueling Missions, Clayton H. Pflieger
Models For The Optimization Of Air Refueling Missions, Clayton H. Pflieger
Theses and Dissertations
This research follows A. Yamani's work on the problem of minimizing total fuel costs for airlift missions that require in-flight refueling. Yamani's major assumptions were removed and the resulting enhanced formulation was applied the the original problem and the related problem of maximizing allowable cabin load. This optimization is accomplished selecting the rendezvous point and initial fuel for each aircraft. The formulation considers a C-141B airlifter refueled once by a KC-135E tanker. Flight is assumed to be at constant altitude and follow great-circle routes. The fuel costs of climb and cruise flight are modeled as functions of gross weight, while …

The purpose of this study was to analyze the proposed addition of heavy KC-135 tanker aircraft to the United States Air Force Aircraft Surge Launch and Recovery (ASLAR) instrument approach system. The Air Force Communications Command, which oversees ASLAR operations, will use these results to determine if KC-135 aircraft should be permitted to fly ASLAR approaches. A SIMSCRIPT II.5 animated simulation model was developed to simulate the Runway 26 approach at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base under a variety of wind conditions. This model was expanded to show the feasibility of KC-135s flying ASLAR approaches and to determine proper controller …
An Empirical Evaluation Of Five Circular Error Probable Estimation Techniques And A Method For Improving Them, William L. Tongue
An Empirical Evaluation Of Five Circular Error Probable Estimation Techniques And A Method For Improving Them, William L. Tongue
Theses and Dissertations
This study compared five CEP estimation techniques under the assumption that the crossrange and downrange miss distances of the sample data follow a bivariate normal distribution. The analysis determined the sensitivities of these models to changes in sample size, bias, correlation, and ellipticity in terms of three measures of effectiveness: Mean relative error (RE), variance of RE, and mean squared error (MSE) of RE. In general, it was found that sample size was the most significant parameter in determining the best CEP method. Mean RE provided a 'strong' distinction between estimators, while variance and MSE provided 'weak' distinctions between estimators. …
A Fault-Tolerant Optimal Interpolative Net, Daniel J. Simon, Hossny El-Sherief
A Fault-Tolerant Optimal Interpolative Net, Daniel J. Simon, Hossny El-Sherief
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The optimal interpolative (OI) classification network is extended to include fault tolerance and make the network more robust to the loss of a neuron. The OI Net has the characteristic that the training data are fit with no more neurons than necessary. Fault tolerance further reduces the number of neurons generated during the learning procedure while maintaining the generalization capabilities of the network. The learning algorithm for the fault tolerant OI Net is presented in a recursive format, allowing for relatively short training times. A simulated fault tolerant OI Net is tested on a navigation satellite selective problem.
Minimizing Channel Density With Movable Terminals, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih
Minimizing Channel Density With Movable Terminals, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
We give algorithms to minimize density for channels with terminals that are movable subject to certain constraints. The main cases considered are channels with linear order constraints, channels with linear order constraints and separation constraints, channels with movable modules containing fixed terminals, and channels with movable modules and terminals. In each case, previous results for running time and space are improved by a factor of L/lg n and L , respectively, where L is the channel length and n is the number of terminals.
Feature-Based Correlation Filters For Object Recognition, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Wesley E. Foor
Feature-Based Correlation Filters For Object Recognition, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Wesley E. Foor
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Using an optical correlator, we experimentally evaluated a binary phase-only filter (BPOF) designed to recognize objects not in the training set used to design the filter. Such a filter is essential for recognizing objects from actual sensors. We used an approach that is as descriptive as a BPOF yet robust to object and background variations of an unknown or nonrepeatable type. We generated our filter by comparing the values of spatial frequencies of a training set. Our filter was easily calculated and offered potentially superior performance to other correlation filters.

Optical Image Analysis Using Fractal Techniques, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Harold Gregory Andrews, Wesley E. Foor
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Using an optical technique, we classified images of natural terrain based on their fractal dimension. We calculated the fractal dimension from an optically generated power spectrum obtained with a magneto-optic spatial light modulator (SLM). By using the fractal dimension to classify images of natural terrain, our post processing was simpler that when a ring-wedge detector was used.

Smart Memory: An Inexact Content-Addressable Memory, Jack Lee
Smart Memory: An Inexact Content-Addressable Memory, Jack Lee
Dissertations and Theses
The function of a Content-Addressable Memory (CAM) is to efficiently search the information stored in the memory, by using hardware rather than software with a corresponding improvement in searching speed. This hardware allows a parallel search by matching the data stored in memory to a search key rather than sequentially searching address by address as is done in a Random Access Memory. Although existing CAMs are more efficient in finding relevant information than RAM, there are additional improvements that can be made to further improve its efficiency. For example, previous CAMs use a word parallel searching scheme that can only …
Exact Modeling Of Time-Interval-Modulated Switched Networks, Weihe Niu
Exact Modeling Of Time-Interval-Modulated Switched Networks, Weihe Niu
Dissertations and Theses
The frequency response analysis of switched networks plays a very important part in designing various kinds of power converter circuits. In this thesis two frequency response techniques for analyzing switching power converters are discussed. One method provides a mathematical description which treats the converter as a periodic time varying system. A linearized small signal model is subsequently derived. The major part of the thesis concentrates on this accurate exact small-signal technique. The derivation involves state space representation and the use of the time varying transfer function. A Fourier analysis is performed to show the relationship between the frequency response of …
Matching Points To Lines: Sonar-Based Localization For The Psubot, Kevin Blythe Stanton
Matching Points To Lines: Sonar-Based Localization For The Psubot, Kevin Blythe Stanton
Dissertations and Theses
The PSUBOT (pronounced pea-es-you-bought) is an autonomous wheelchair robot for persons with certain disabilities. Its use of voice recognition and autonomous navigation enable it to carry out high level commands with little or no user assistance. We first describe the goals, constraints, and capabilities of the overall system including path planning and obstacle avoidance. We then focus on localization-the ability of the robot to locate itself in space. Odometry, a compass, and an algorithm which matches points to lines are each employed to accomplish this task. The matching algorithm (which matches "points" to "lines") is the main contribution to this …
Minimization Of Permuted Reed-Muller Trees And Reed-Muller Trees For Cellular Logic Programmable Gate Arrays, Lifei Wu
Dissertations and Theses
The new family of Field Programmable Gate Arrays, CLI 6000 from Concurrent Logic Inc realizes truly Cellular Logic. It has been mainly designed for the realization of data path architectures. However, the realizable logic functions provided by its macrocells and their limited connectivity call also for new general-purpose logic synthesis methods. The basic cell of CLi 6000 can be programmed to realize a two-input multiplexer ( A*B + C*B ), an AND/EXOR cell ( A*B Ea C ), or the basic 2-input AND, OR and EXOR gate. This suggests to using these cells for tree-like expansions. These "cellular logic" devices …
Novel Cylindrical Illuminator Tip For Ultraviolet Light Delivery, Hanqun Shangguan
Novel Cylindrical Illuminator Tip For Ultraviolet Light Delivery, Hanqun Shangguan
Dissertations and Theses
The design, processing, and sequential testing of a novel cylindrical diffusing optical fiber tip for ultraviolet light delivery is described. This device has been shown to uniformly(+/- 15%) illuminate angioplasty balloons, 20 mm in length, that are used in an experimental photochemotherapeutic treatment of swine intimal hyperplasia. Our experiments show that uniform diffusing tips of < 400 micron diameter can be reliably constructed for this and other interstitial applications. Modeling results indicate that this design is scalable to smaller diameters. The diffusing tips are made by stripping the protective buffer and etching away the cladding over a length of 20 mm from the fiber tip and replacing it with a thin layer of optical epoxy mixed with A/203 powder. To improve the uniformity and ease of fabrication, we have evaluated a new device configuration where the tip is etched into a modified conical shape, and the distal end face is polished and then coated with an optically opaque epoxy. This is shown to uniformly scatter - 70% of the light launched into the fiber without forward transmission. To our knowledge, we are the first to use this device configuration, and we have achieved a uniform cylindrical pattern of laser energy with uniformity < ± 15% of the average value. A simple computational model suitable for the interpretation of laser energy irradiance along the bare core surface of multimode optical fiber tips is proposed and experimentally verified. The model used is based on geometrical optics and Gaussian approximation. Good agreement is obtained between the calculation and experiment. We have measured the optical properties of the tips through all the sequences of the fabrication. The performances of the diffusing tips for illuminating angioplasty balloons are then evaluated by Ultraviolet Light at 365 nm. A Ti:Sapphire Ring Laser System with a doubling crystal pumped by an argon ion laser is used to generate the wavelength in this study.

Electrical Engineering
The characterization of rectifying heterojunctions (diodes) fabricated from a semiconducting polymer, a soluble derivative of poly(phenylene-vinylene), and buckminsterfullerene, C60, are reported. Rectification ratios in the current versus voltage characteristics exceed 104. When illuminated, the devices exhibit a large photoresponse as a result of photoinduced electron transfer across the heterojunction interface from the semiconducting polymer (donor) onto C60 (acceptor). The photodiode and photovoltaic responses are characterized. Photoinduced electron transfer across the donor-accepted rectifying heterojunction offers potential for photodetector and for solar cell applications.
