Cause And Effect Diagrams For Process Analysis And Control, Philip Thomas
Cause And Effect Diagrams For Process Analysis And Control, Philip Thomas
Theses
Cause and effect diagrams can be used as an effective tool for identifying the possible causes of a quality problem. Using this diagram one can go deep into the causes of the problem and take proper remedial action. Several graphical techniques like matrix diagrams, systematic diagrams, etc., can be combined with this tool to better represent the cause effect relationships. While a quantitative approach of this technique is feasible but limited, there are useful applications based on qualitative approach to this technique. The objective of this thesis is to propose a quantitative approach to the cause and effect diagrams especially …
Design Of Holographic Optical Interconnections, Su-Chiou Tsay
Design Of Holographic Optical Interconnections, Su-Chiou Tsay
Theses
Optics have many advantages over electronics in interconnecting systems together, particularly in terms of higher transmission speed and better immunity to noise. Optical interconnections may be used at all levels of computing: for local area networks, between processors or memory elements, and between boards.
In this thesis, we attempted to generate a new type of computer hologram for optical interconnection purposes. The holographic method is very promising whenever integrated optical interconnections are considered. In this research we have tried two designs: the shortest path grating design which can maximize the global output energy and the single input maximum output grating …
Selecting Windows For South Florida Residences, Florida Solar Energy Center, Ross Mccluney
Selecting Windows For South Florida Residences, Florida Solar Energy Center, Ross Mccluney
FSEC Energy Research Center®
To provide some guidance to the victims of hurricane Andrew in Dade County, we performed a study of various types of modern glazing systems that might be incorporated in windows for south Florida residences.
The dominant energy impact of residential windows in south Florida comes from the solar radiant heat gain entering these windows and the corresponding heat loads on cooling systems. Thus any extra dollars spent by homeowners to purchase improved replacement windows should be spent in lowering the solar gains of the windows purchased (by reducing glazing shading coefficients or by adding exterior shading devices or vegetation) rather …

Route Fatality Risk As A Measure Of Travel Death Risk, Kopl Halperin, Jim Redman
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
The authors examine the route fatality Risk of routes in Erie County, PA and show that some pose a disproportionately high-Risk to users. They argue that transportation safety could be greatly increased by relatively small expenditures and suggest that the most cost-effective Risk amelioration is speed limit control.

This paper provides a theoretical perspective on the effect of computer support on creativity. The assertion is made that artifacts of IS do not substantially differ from those of art and science, and that the creative processes leading to the artifacts are similar. It further proposes that the use of newly available computer technology, specifically, the Visual Process Language (VPL) will have much to offer in terms of augmenting creativity when constructing IS artfacts. We postulate that VPL assists the first insight, preparation and illumination steps of the creative process, and that both Association/Images and Progressive Abstraction techniques are embedded …
All Optical Timing Extraction With Frequency Division Using A Twin Section Laser Diode, Gerald Farrell, P. Phelan, Joe Hegarty, J. A. Shields
All Optical Timing Extraction With Frequency Division Using A Twin Section Laser Diode, Gerald Farrell, P. Phelan, Joe Hegarty, J. A. Shields
Articles
All-optical timing extraction from a coded line signal with division of the extracted clock frequency is demonstrated using a single twin-section self-pulsating laser diode. Either the bit-rate clock or a submultiple of the bit-rate clock can be extracted, depending only on the dc biases applied to the self-pulsating laser diode. Timing extraction is carried out for the first time without optical injection locking of the self-pulsating laser diode by the optical data source.

The objective of this thesis is the study of the stability of cold-formed thin-walled steel members. The interaction between global instability and local buckling of the profile walls has a reducing effect on the collapse load. The aim is to develop a numerical tool able to predict not only the collapse load, but also the equilibrium path. With this aim in view, the non-linear spatial beam tinite element recently developed by Vincent de Ville in Liege University was chosen for this purpose. The steel member is considered as an association of flat plates and corners. Local buckling is modeled by …

Heating Of Calcium Phosphate Crystals: Morphological Consequences And Biological Implications, W. Bohne, J. A. Pouezat, L. Peru, G. Daculsi
Cells and Materials
Sintering hydroxyapatite (HA) and ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) affects the chemical composition, the crystallinity, and the morphological features as demonstrated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) , infrared spectroscopy (IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). When heated to 1230°C, 16.7% of HA had decomposed to ß-TCP. SEM investigations showed homogeneous, sharp angular polyhedric blocks of 30 to 50 µm with rare surface pores. On heating at 1230°C, ß-TCP had entirely transformed to a-TCP. During sintering, the size of the powder grains increased and progressive bridging between the grains was observed. At 1230°C, a network within round-shaped polyhedric blocks of 50 to …

Surface Subsidence Over A Room-And-Pillar Mine In The Western United States, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Mines
Mines and Mineral Resources
This report summarizes the results from the subsidence research study completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Roadside Mine, Powderhorn Coal Co., Palisade, CO. This research was conducted from February 1981 to August 1985, with additional data obtained during July 1991, to evaluate residual subsidence. The Bureau studied subsidence at three distinct room-and-pillar sections at separate locations over the mine and determined the maximum subsidence values and surface subsidence profiles for each mining section. Maximum subsidence of 3.0 ft. occurred over the room-and-pillar sections, with over-burden depths ranging from 50 to 600 ft. Surface tension cracks had occurred, …

Bone Growth On Sol-Gel Calcium Phosphate Thin Films In Vitro, Q. Qiu, P. Vincent, B. Lowenberg, M. Sayer, J. E. Davies
Cells and Materials
Thin, sub-micron, films of calcium phosphate were fabricated on either glass or quartz supports by a colloidal suspension sol-gel method. These films, which varied in both surface chemistry and topography were then employed as culture substrata for osteogenic rat bone marrow cells. During an 18 day culture period, the cells elaborated a morphologically distinguishable bone matrix on all substrata which was similar to that reported earlier on tissue culture polystyrene. Selected samples of the culture substrata were fractured, critical point dried, and observed by scanning electron microscopy. Particular attention was paid to the morphologies of the interface between the so1-gellayer …

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
A new design specification for engineered wood structures has been proposed in load and resistance factor design (LRFD) format. This paper provides an overview of the proposed LRFD connections design criteria. The connections design provisions are, in part, calibrated from allowable stress design provisions. Major changes from historic practice, however, result from a change in behavioral equations to a theoretical base for predicting the lateral strength of connections using bolts, screws, and nails. New provisions for axial withdrawal of driven and turned fasteners, as well as combined axial and lateral loading criteria are also proposed. Safety levels were calibrated to …

First mandibular molar tooth germs were dissected from 17 day mouse embryos. The dental papilla was isolated using both mechanical separation and enzymatic digestion. The cells of the papilla were then enzymatically disaggregated and cultured in 35 mm polystyrene dishes containing alpha minimum essential medium supplemented with 15 % fetal calf serum, 50 μglml ascorbic acid, 1 o-8 M dexamethasone and 10 mM Na-13-glycerophosphate. The cultures were maintained for 23 days. The cultured cells initially appeared as large flat cells having numerous cell processes. Multilayered cell nodules, distributed randomly in the cultures, were apparent after 5 days. Matrix was visible …

Ultrastructural, Cytochemical, And Immunocytochemical Studies On Bone And Its Interfaces, M. D. Mckee, A. Nanci
Cells and Materials
Bone cells possess the ability to synthesize, secrete and direct the assembly and maintenance of extracellular matrix to form a functionally rigid and/or weight-bearing mineralized tissue complex, the skeleton. The skeleton not only supports and protects the organs and tissues of the body, but also acts as a mineral ion reservoir for maintaining systemic calcium balance (calcium homeostasis). The remarkable biological precision necessary for the formation, turnover and constant adaptation of bone to external mechanical forces is a dynamic process requiring a coordinated cellular effort relying on a variety of cell-cell and cell-matrix/mineral interactions. Indeed, cell-matrix interfaces found in a …

Multinucleated Giant Cells-Hydroxyapatite Interactions: A Time-Related Quantitative Study In A Rat Skull Defect, J. M. Dersot, A. Llorens, J. L. Saffar
Cells and Materials
The implantation of calcium phosphate ceramics in the bone environment elicits the differentiation of multinucleated giant cells (MNGCs). MNGC interactions with both crushed and standard hydroxyapatite (HA, Bioapatite ®) particles (cHA and sHA) were studied in rat skull defects. Light microscopy (LM) of undemineralized material after 21 and 42 days of implantation showed that the number of particles in the defect significantly decreased (about SO%) with the two HA forms. Concomitantly, average cHA particle size increased significantly due to the elimination of the smallest particles by the MNGCs. The number of MNGCs per mm2 of defect decreased significantly between 21 …

Metallurgical Structures Of As-Cast And Heat-Treated High-Palladium Dental Alloys, William A. Brantley, Zhuo Cai, Alan B. Carr, John C. Mitchell
Cells and Materials
Scanning electron microscope observations and energy-dispersive spectroscopic analyses have been performed on two first-generation and two second-generation high-palladium dental casting alloys. A specimen design simulating a maxillary central incisor coping was employed to conserve metal, while providing thin and thick sections to yield a range of solidification rates. The alloys were centrifugally cast in air, following standard dental laboratory techniques; three castings were prepared for each alloy. Each casting was sectioned to produce two mirror-image specimens, and one specimen received the appropriate oxidation heat treatment, followed by a simulated full porcelain firing sequence. After metallographic polishing, specimens were examined with …

Cells and Materials
In this study, hydroxyapatite, tetracalcium phosphate, HPEO/PBT 55145 copolymer, PEO/PBT 55!45 copolymer (Polyactive) and silicone rubber were implanted as dense blocks, subcutaneously and. into the tibia of rats. Biocompatibility and degradation were investigated but most attention was directed to .the bone/biomaterial interactions. None of the materials showed any significant adverse tissue reactions. With exception of the silicone rubber, all materials sho~ed bone bonding phenomena based on both morphological and mechanical evaluations. (H)PEO/PBT 55145 copolymer is the first polymer reported to be bonded by bone and thus widens the spectrum of bone bonding materials with a low modulus, degradable, elastomer in …
Immunohistochemical Investigation Of Tracks Left By The Migration Of Fibroblasts On Titanium Surfaces, Y. Abiko, D. M. Brunette
Immunohistochemical Investigation Of Tracks Left By The Migration Of Fibroblasts On Titanium Surfaces, Y. Abiko, D. M. Brunette
Cells and Materials
Fibronectin, a major attachment protein, has been thought to be involved in pathway guidance, a process in which cells migrate along specific pathways within a tissue during development. Fibroblasts exhibit the phenomenon of contact guidance, the tendency of cells to be guided in their direction of migration by the shape of the substratum. The purpose of our study was to test the hypothesis that fibronectin tracks are deposited by fibroblasts moving on smooth and grooved titanium surfaces.
The study was carried out on human gingival fibroblasts which were plated onto both smooth and grooved titanium substrata using medium containing either …
