Cuprous Oxide Rectification, Philip G. Cobb
Cuprous Oxide Rectification, Philip G. Cobb
Theses
It has been shown that cuprous oxide, when formed from a copper surface by suitable heat treatment, has remarkable rectifying properties towards alternating voltages applied through the oxide and copper. The purpose of our work was to investigate, the effect fully from all angles possible, and especially from those considerations affecting the constancy and permanence in the electric circuit.
The work ranged from furnace operation to tests of completed units, and further to the development of a theory explaining as completely as possible this rectifying property.
It soon became apparent, that here was ideal thesis material, and so, with proper …
Irrigation Expansion On The Sevier River, Utah, With Special Reference To The Piute Project, O. W. Monson
Irrigation Expansion On The Sevier River, Utah, With Special Reference To The Piute Project, O. W. Monson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
On January 16, 1908, the State Board of Land Commissioners, on behalf of the State of Utah, undertook to build a reclamation project in the Sevier River Valley, intended to reclaim between 25,000 to 35,000 acres of the virgin lands lying on the west side of Sevier River in Sevier and San Pete Counties. From January, 1908 to January, 1914, the State expended nearly $1,000,000 for the construction of the reservior dm and the canal leading from it. Since that time nearly $200,000 has been spent for supplementary construction. This money was supplied by the State Reservior Land Grant Fund, …
A Few Notes From The Sanitary Engineering Field, Ronald Davies Ward
A Few Notes From The Sanitary Engineering Field, Ronald Davies Ward
Professional Degree Theses
"This paper, it is felt, may appear to be a somewhat disconnected discussion of a few points that have come to the writer's attention from his limited experience and practice in the field of Sanitary Engineering. It has not been the intention, however, to provide a discussion of continuity which would take the reader from the ground up through the process involved in the design and construction of any particular structure, system, or plant; but rather is it to be considered the writer's attempt - although probably a somewhat feeble one - to set forth in a note-book, as it …
An Investigation Of The Mechanics Of Oil Migration From The Source Beds To The Reservoir Beds, William Reed Quilliam
An Investigation Of The Mechanics Of Oil Migration From The Source Beds To The Reservoir Beds, William Reed Quilliam
Professional Degree Theses
"The study of the migration and accumulation of petroleum has very naturally been analytic, with the result that we have had a variety of studies of its several features. the generation of petroleum, its migration and its accumulation in reservoir rocks is not a rapid process which may be accomplished and terminated in a comparatively short time, but one of long and almost continuous operation from the time of its inception. In this study the author is not attempting to formulate a new theory for the movement of oil from its point of origin to its final point of accumulation …
Internal Combustion Engines, Neal Ham
Internal Combustion Engines, Neal Ham
Professional Degree Theses
"Every one is either directly or indirectly concerned with two types of power plants. The steam power plants of Kansas City furnish us with light, power, and transportation. In this day these are indispensable. The gas, or internal combustion engine power plant furnishes transportation, mainly and some power. Each of our big buses has an internal combustion engine power plant under the hood.
It will be our aim here to show how the internal combustion engines operates and discuss some of the types in use in automobiles and stationary power plants. When one contemplates the immense amount of power developed …
Diversion Of Mississippi Flood Water As Aid To Flood Control, R. W. Campbell
Diversion Of Mississippi Flood Water As Aid To Flood Control, R. W. Campbell
Professional Degree Theses
"For many years the lower Mississippi River valley has been in constant danger from high water causing disastrous floods. The important city of New Orleans, our typical French city, is below the surface of the Mississippi River at all stages, and its only means of protection at present is by a levee. Should this bulkwark give way, the whole of that city would be submerged. With this danger in mind, the writer has undertaken a study for, and design of a spillway above the city to reduce the danger caused by high water. Each year flood heights increase and the …
Cone Deformation Eutectics Using Sodium Chloride, Dolomite, And Alpite Rock, William K. Schweickhardt
Cone Deformation Eutectics Using Sodium Chloride, Dolomite, And Alpite Rock, William K. Schweickhardt
Bachelors Theses
"Heterogeneous Equilibrium, alone, is an extensive study in itself and no discussion of it will be given here. It is known from this study that different phases are formed in various systems, the system consisting of two or more components. Some systems form an eutectic, which is a mixture of two solids which combine to form a liquid at a lower degree of temperature than either of the milting points of the two solids, as shown in the two component system of KCl and LiCl¹; some systems form solid solutions in which there is no eutectic formed, and the solids …
Drainage And Irrigation Of A Thirty-Six Square Mile Tract Of Land In Louisiana, Ralph Charles Dodge
Drainage And Irrigation Of A Thirty-Six Square Mile Tract Of Land In Louisiana, Ralph Charles Dodge
Bachelors Theses
"Because of the fact that I was unable to secure all of the necessary data concerning the topography of the section in question I made several assumptions. However, these assumptions were not made at random, as the land lies on the coast and is subject to the same conditions as does the southern portion of Jefferson County, Texas, of which I have accurate knowledge and which lies directly across Sabine Pass"--Introduction, page iv.
Irregularities In The Productivity Of The Fry Sand In The Smith-Ellis Pool Of Northwest Brown County, Texas, Willard Ardell Schaeffer Jr.
Irregularities In The Productivity Of The Fry Sand In The Smith-Ellis Pool Of Northwest Brown County, Texas, Willard Ardell Schaeffer Jr.
Professional Degree Theses
"The Fry Sand of Northwest Brown County, Texas, as ordinarily defined, consists of irregularly distributed lenticular sand bodies of varying thickness, ranging up to more than thirty feet in some localities. It is quite generally conceded to be a member of the upper Strawn Group of the Pennsylvanian of Texas.
The Fry Sand is highly unconformable with relation to the strata both above and below, and is subject to abrupt changes of thickness within distances of but a few yards. It generally occurs as a light grey to white, fairly fine-grained, quite pure quartz sand, and where it is present …
Difference In Pyrometric Cone Equivalent Between Raw And Calcined Clay, Charles Alfred Freeman
Difference In Pyrometric Cone Equivalent Between Raw And Calcined Clay, Charles Alfred Freeman
Bachelors Theses
"In a recent survey of the refractories field with particular respect to the Pyrometric Cone Equivalent of different clays it was suggested that a difference in the P. C. E. value of clays might be found due to different stages of heat treatment that these clays had previously undergone. At present there is considerable apparent lack of information regarding this problem. It is evidenced largely in the samples of clay sent into commercial testing and research laboratories by manufacturers who are attempting to develop definite properties from a given clay or clay body. There is a large difference in the …
A Study Of Petroleum Emulsions, Howard Halcomb Gross
A Study Of Petroleum Emulsions, Howard Halcomb Gross
Masters Theses
"The producer of crude oil experiences a continuous source of trouble and loss in the emulsion problem. These emulsions cannot be entirely discarded for several reasons: First because it is a waste of natural resource and second because there are such large quantities that no feasible outlet could be found on account of fire hazard and stream polution [sic]. Further to keep these emulsions in storage for slow settling puts a storage burden on the producers. To handle the emulsions most economically many producers are treating them and a large number of methods for treating have been devised. The object …
The Solubility Of Inorganic Salts In Ether, Clarence Bernard Weiss
The Solubility Of Inorganic Salts In Ether, Clarence Bernard Weiss
Masters Theses
"The data on the solubility of inorganic salts in ether is scarce. Eder made a study of this subject and found few salts whose solubility could be called high. He used both hydrated and dehydrated salts. Neumann mentions the great solubility of aluminum chloride in ether, but did no work to find its exact proportions. It was thought that perhaps with this particular salt, a solubility curve might be obtained that would be both instructive and interesting. Therefore the major portion of this work was spent in determining the solubility of aluminum chloride in ether. Other salts whose solubilities were …
Solubility Of Solid Paraffins In Lower Molecular Weight Hydrocarbons, Ruth Veino Goodhue
Solubility Of Solid Paraffins In Lower Molecular Weight Hydrocarbons, Ruth Veino Goodhue
Masters Theses
"The solubility of solid paraffins in the lower molecular weight liquid hydrocarbons offers a problem of some considerable commercial importance since it is by use of these low boiling hydrocarbons that the undesirable paraffin waxes are removed from lubricating oils in the Sharples process. Little data is to be found in the literature on the solubility of the paraffin waxes, and that which is available is of a very general nature...This work was undertaken for the purpose of finding if possible, what effect this "cracking" or "telescoping" process has on the solubility of the paraffins in the liquid hydrocarbons"--Introduction, page …
A Study Of The Determination Of Silica In The Presence Of Fluorine, William Harlan Ode
A Study Of The Determination Of Silica In The Presence Of Fluorine, William Harlan Ode
Masters Theses
"The determination of silica in the presence of fluorine has always been accomplished either by difficult and complex analytical procedures or by rapid arbitrary control methods of doubtful precision...Hence, this study was undertaken in order to determine whether a more simple method might be found for the determination of silica in the presence of fluorine"--Introduction, page 1-2.
The Solubility Of Inorganic Salts In Carbon Disulfide: The Case Of Aluminum Bromide, Herman Henry Kaveler
The Solubility Of Inorganic Salts In Carbon Disulfide: The Case Of Aluminum Bromide, Herman Henry Kaveler
Masters Theses
"Since about 1890, the interest in solubility has turned to a large extent to the investigation of the solubility of compounds in organic solvents. This has resulted in a great deal of work being done on the solubility of inorganic salts in non-aqueous solvents. As this mass of data steadily accumulated, the theoretical considerations of solubility and the ideal solution made rapid advances, as Hildebrand has pointed out. We express as much wonder over these theoretical advances as chemists did over the discover "that salts do dissolve in organic compounds". To add some useful data to that already accumulated on …

The Manufacture Of Liquid Oxygen And Its Use As An Explosive, Francis Kinlock Middleton Hunter
The Manufacture Of Liquid Oxygen And Its Use As An Explosive, Francis Kinlock Middleton Hunter
Professional Degree Theses
"Oxygen was first liquefied in 1877, but the first record of its use commercially as an explosive was in 1899 when part of the famous Simplon tunnel between Italy and Switzerland was driven with this explosive. Owing to the difficulties of storing and using this liquid, little more progress was made until the Great War, when Germany, forced to experiment with any promising explosive because of her rapidly diminishing stocks of Chilean nitrates, made considerable headway in the technique of using liquid oxygen...Since the War liquid oxygen explosives have been used extensively in France and Germany and to a lesser …
On The Permanent Growth Of Grey Iron, Walter Edward Remmers
On The Permanent Growth Of Grey Iron, Walter Edward Remmers
Professional Degree Theses
"After making a survey of the available information on the subject of permanent growth in grey iron castings, it was found that very little definite information is available and such as is available does not seem to satisfy all conditions. As is perhaps generally known, grey iron castings withstand a growth in volume upon repeated heating and cooling, which growth is a permanent deformation and is not a function of the temperature co-efficient"--Review of Published Work, page 3.
A Preliminary Report On The Possibilities Of The Correlation Of Geochemical Data Relative To Oil Well Waters. A Report On The Oil Well Waters Of Greenwood County, Kansas, David Anderson Bash
A Preliminary Report On The Possibilities Of The Correlation Of Geochemical Data Relative To Oil Well Waters. A Report On The Oil Well Waters Of Greenwood County, Kansas, David Anderson Bash
Professional Degree Theses
"It is a known condition and a proven fact that vast quantities of oil and gas have been lost by the infiltration and encroachment of water in producing sands. The encroachment of water in the pay horizons has not only trapped underground oil locally and caused a great loss of production, but unless the water problem was successfully combated the amount of water entering the pay may increase to the extent of flooding an entire field. Water in an oil well so increases the lifting cost that many wells are abondoned [sic] before the normal recovery is reached"--page 2.
Relationship Between Temperature And Vapor Pressure Of Light Oils, William Orval Keeling
Relationship Between Temperature And Vapor Pressure Of Light Oils, William Orval Keeling
Professional Degree Theses
"There are a few data scattered through the literature on the vapor pressures of pure hydrocarbons, but the author has never seen a systematic study of the relationship between temperature and vapor pressures of complicated mixtures such as the various light oils encountered in refinery practice. Such data would be useful in designing equipment for distillation, steam stilling, vacuum distillation and in calculating heat balance, etc. An attempt has been made to link the vapor pressure of a light oil, at various temperatures, to the average boiling point of the oil"--Introduction, page 1.
The Role Of Geology In Prospecting For Lead And Zinc In The Tri-State District, William Ferdinand Netzeband
The Role Of Geology In Prospecting For Lead And Zinc In The Tri-State District, William Ferdinand Netzeband
Professional Degree Theses
"The present generation has seen many changes in all phases of human endeavor, and the changes which have been made in the extraction of metals from the earth are not the least or these. The application of science to our industries has revolutionized many of them. Today quantity production in our factories is an accepted thing, and in the mines, application of the same principles has made possible the working of the low-grade copper deposits of Utah, Arizona, Chile and Belgian Congo. The mining industry has made use of almost all of the sciences in one form or another to …
Concentration Of Oxidized Lead Ores, Stephen Michael Burke Jr.
Concentration Of Oxidized Lead Ores, Stephen Michael Burke Jr.
Professional Degree Theses
"In the pages of this paper an attempt is made to describe present methods of concentration and flotation of the oxidized ores of lead. The method employed is the presentation of the actual o operation of several mills which have been treating such ores during 1926 and 1927.
The plants described are representative operations and form some criteria for the performance of such ores under different conditions. In addition to those concentrators which are described, there are perhaps several small installations which are recovering lead from old mine dumps and tailings piles. It is difficult and almost impossible to obtain …

Fluorspar Mining And Milling In Southern Illinois, Henry William Hurst
Fluorspar Mining And Milling In Southern Illinois, Henry William Hurst
Professional Degree Theses
"Fluorspar is fully as necessary a material in certain phases of steel manufacturing as the metal that enters the furnace. Without it, the basic open hearth practice probably would not have reached its dominant position among steel-making methods. Of the entire output of fluorspar, 80 to 85 percent is used in basic open-hearth and electric furnaces as a flux and detergent and there is today no known substitute.
The mining of the ore on a large scale requires extensive underground workings, much the same as is found in metal mines. Since high extraction can not be accomplished the milling of …
The Economics Of Engineering Testing, Gerald Franklin Rackett
The Economics Of Engineering Testing, Gerald Franklin Rackett
Professional Degree Theses
"...It becomes the province of the engineer in his functions of designing and building the various units so prominent in our contemporary civilization, to guild with due regard for economic and mortal safety. To do these things he must have reliable data of the behavior and characteristics of those materials with which he works. The data can only be obtained by the systematic testing of engineering materials and the articulated units and fabricated structures that are built with them"--Safety, page 7-8.
