A Study Of The Separation Of Wolframite From Tin-Oxide, Chih-Wen Ying Jan 1948

A Study Of The Separation Of Wolframite From Tin-Oxide, Chih-Wen Ying

Masters Theses

"A number of mines in china, Bolivia, England, and other countries contain both tin-oxide and wolframite. Owing to the fact that the specific gravity of tin-oxide and wolframite is so nearly the same, considerable difficulty is experienced in making a gravity separation, and all attempts to do so by wet or dry concentration have given very poor results. The perfection of magnetic separators has done much to mitigate this difficulty, so that now complex ores of this nature can be treated in a satisfactory manner. The mixed concentrate from the tables or other concentrators, after being roasted to expel sulfur …

A Test Method For Measuring The Flow In Refractory Materials At High Temperatures, Christen Knudsen Jan 1948

A Test Method For Measuring The Flow In Refractory Materials At High Temperatures, Christen Knudsen

Masters Theses

"One of the most important properties of refractory materials is the ability to resist stress which may either be directly applied or originate in the material. The factors which govern the resistance to stress include the modulus of elasticity, the ultimate strength under different types of stress, and the "flow" characteristics which become of importance when the material is stressed at the temperature at which plasticity is developed. Systematic determinations of the mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity and ultimate or breaking stress is rather difficult or more or less impossible to carry out at the temperature at which …

Synthesis Involving Waste Carbon Dioxide, Glenn Eldon Brand Jan 1948

Synthesis Involving Waste Carbon Dioxide, Glenn Eldon Brand

Masters Theses

"Many industries, ranging from power plants to breweries, produce large quantities of carbon dioxide as a by-product. The burning of limestone with natural gas produces a relatively clean gas in which the carbon dioxide content may exceed 40 per cent. It is with this type gas that the present thesis will be concerned. In this process the burning of the limestone is accomplished by using natural gas as a fuel, burning usually under a pressure of about two pounds, and obtaining carbon dioxide from the combustion of the gas and the decomposition of the limestone. Such a plant producing 70 …

The Mechanical Anchorage Value Of The Transverse Wires In Welded Wire Reinforcement Fabric, Ernst August Weinel Jan 1948

The Mechanical Anchorage Value Of The Transverse Wires In Welded Wire Reinforcement Fabric, Ernst August Weinel

Masters Theses

"The tests reported in this paper were performed in an effort to secure data concerning characteristic properties of Welded Wire Reinforcement Fabric. This fabric has been used, up to the present time, primarily for temperature reinforcement. Limited attention has been focused on its potentialities for use as main tension reinforcing steel, particularly concrete highway slabs and floor slab reinforcement for buildings. The manufacturers of the Welded Wire Reinforcement Fabric believe their product can be used to better advantage as main tension reinforcement in reinforced concrete structures both from an economic and structural viewpoint, than structural steel reinforcing bars"--Object of Research, …

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine, if possible, a formula for the initial tensile load that will consider the Nominal Diameter of the bolt and the yield point of the material from which the bolt is manufactured; to determine, if possible, a torque stress relation, when tightening the bolt"--Preface, page iii.

Improving Railroad "Less-Than-Car-Load" Freight By The Use Of Containers And Container Cars, Kenneth Walter Schoeneberg Jan 1948

Improving Railroad "Less-Than-Car-Load" Freight By The Use Of Containers And Container Cars, Kenneth Walter Schoeneberg

Masters Theses

"Less-than-car-load (L.C.L.) freight has been and is becoming more of an acute problem with the railroads of this country. They are rapidly losing this vital and important function of their transportation service. Following, is a brief history of the railroads along with a discussion of their present day problems dealing with less-than-car-load freight service. It is believed, by the author, that a system of developing and using containers and container cars along with a pick up and delivery service will solve these problems the railroads now experience. If this method of freight transport would be adopted by the railroads, not …

Design Of A Radio Broadcasting Station, John William Hamman Jan 1948

Design Of A Radio Broadcasting Station, John William Hamman

Masters Theses

"In the design of any piece of equipment, before any work whatsoever is done, a reason for developing the object must be apparent to all concerned. Any expenditure of time, labor and money must be properly justified before action can be taken. In the case of this paper, then, the reason for designing a broadcast radio station for the Missouri School of Mines & Metallurgy at Rolla, Missouri is twofold: First, to provide an additional instrument whereby instruction may be given to students interested in the study of radio; second, to supply the residents of Rolla and vicinity with entertainment …

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Titanium-Tin Equilibrium System, James Eugene Reynolds Jan 1948

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Titanium-Tin Equilibrium System, James Eugene Reynolds

Masters Theses

"Titanium is estimated to comprise about .63% of the lithosphere and atmosphere. This would render it the ninth in abundance of all the elements, and fourth in abundance of the metals suitable for mechanical and structural uses, being exceeded only by iron, aluminum, and magnesium. It is approximately 400 times more abundant than lead, which is generally considered to be quite plentiful. The chief restriction of the commercial availability of titanium in its pure form has been the difficulty of reducing it from its ores. Several methods have been proposed in the past and recent years, and R. S. Dean …

A Study Of The Retort Zinc Distillation Process, Albert Hoffman Jan 1948

A Study Of The Retort Zinc Distillation Process, Albert Hoffman

Masters Theses

"The problem of this thesis is to determine the optimum density of packing of the charge to a zinc retort under exact industrial conditions of temperatures and materials as it affects the production of zinc metal. It is well known that the quantity of zinc produced per cycle is benefited by increasing the density of charging, but increased density of packing or charging is limited by the diffusion, through the charge of the gases necessary to carry on the reduction reactions. In commercial practice there is also a secondary limitation dependent primarily upon the rate at which the heat can …

An Investigation Of The Reduction Of Rutile Copper Oxide Mixtures With Magnesium, Tryggve Smedsland Jan 1948

An Investigation Of The Reduction Of Rutile Copper Oxide Mixtures With Magnesium, Tryggve Smedsland

Masters Theses

"It is known that the addition of titanium to certain types of brasses and bronzes gives them additional valuable properties. The copper-titanium master alloy which is the natural addition agent for making these brasses can not, however, be used if it has been made aluminothermically. It appears that aluminum in the master alloy makes it useless for the above purpose. It should, therefore, be worth while to determine if it is possible to produce a copper-titanium alloy by some method which eliminates the contamination by aluminum, and which would give a copper-titanium which could be used with advantage as an …

The Design, Construction, And Testing Of A Heat Exchanger For Determining Heat Transfer Coefficients For Liquids In Forced Convection Normal To Banks Of Staggered Tubes, Kenneth Edwin Rudert Jan 1948

The Design, Construction, And Testing Of A Heat Exchanger For Determining Heat Transfer Coefficients For Liquids In Forced Convection Normal To Banks Of Staggered Tubes, Kenneth Edwin Rudert

Masters Theses

"Many studies of heat transmission have been carried out on various kinds of heat exchangers. Film coefficients have been determined and the data correlated by equations. In particular, film coefficients have been obtained for gases in turbulent flow normal to both a single cylinder and banks of staggered tubes. Very little data has been published on liquid film coefficients for flow at right angles, or normal to banks of staggered tubes...It is the purpose of this paper to present the results obtained from tests made on an originally designed heat exchanger built in the laboratory. The exchanger is a non-baffled …

Graphical Cost Analysis, Pranlal Girdharlal Sheth Jan 1948

Graphical Cost Analysis, Pranlal Girdharlal Sheth

Masters Theses

"This study made in the present work is an attempt to use the graphical methods to analyse the various cost functions of mineral production, viz., cost of labor, and materials (explosives, supplies, etc.) and to investigate their behavior with regard to the production of ore. Graphs and charts show, in a pictorial way, the relative magnitudes of changes in the factors of production that take place with the process of time. Besides being a visual comparison of the various series plotted, the graph develops and build analytical thinking and permits one to obtain the proper perspective. Today, engineers, in constantly …

Dust Control In Mining Industry And Some Aspects Of Silicosis, Mathuramuthoo Subramanyam Jan 1948

Dust Control In Mining Industry And Some Aspects Of Silicosis, Mathuramuthoo Subramanyam

Masters Theses

"The deleterious effect on human beings of dust in mine air is well-known. It is the duty of engineers, therefore, to take measures to eliminate it. It is now definitely established that of all the various types of dust encountered in mine air, silica dust is the most harmful. This dust, if inhaled over a period of time, causes the disease, silicosis, which in most countries is compensated for as a physical disability. The prevention of alleviation of this scourge is analyzed in three broad aspects: 1. If the mine air is as clean as outside atmospheric air, silicosis will …

Liquid-Vapor Equilibria In The System Methanol-Ethylene Glycol-Water, John Wilson Sjoberg Jan 1948

Liquid-Vapor Equilibria In The System Methanol-Ethylene Glycol-Water, John Wilson Sjoberg

Masters Theses

"The freezing points of the system methanol-glycol-water were investigated by Conrad, Hill and Ballman to determine the suitability of such mixtures for use as an antifreeze. The low freezing points obtained seem to warrant further investigation of other properties of the system. Especially important would be the vapor-liquid equilibrium relations of the system, since one of the desirable features of such a mixture would be low vapor pressures. It is well known that when one substance is dissolved in another, each lowers the vapor pressure of the other. It was for the purpose of determining these relations that the present …

A Study Of The Ventilation Of The Hiawatha Mine, Menominee Iron Range, Michigan, Thomas Alan O'Hara Jan 1948

A Study Of The Ventilation Of The Hiawatha Mine, Menominee Iron Range, Michigan, Thomas Alan O'Hara

Masters Theses

"Mine operators in the Menominee iron range have become aware of the need for adequate ventilation to reduce the amount of dangerous dust in the air. Dust-excluding respirators and water sprays are used but it is apparent that the prevalence of diseases caused by dust will be appreciably reduced only if an adequate amount of fresh air reaches the working places. During the past five years the necessity for direct control of the underground working environment has become particularly urgent. The increase in production rate, with two-shift and three-shift operation replacing the single shift, has complicated the problem of dealing …

The Influence Of Cartridge Diameter On The Effectiveness Of Dynamite, Charles Harding Noren Jan 1948

The Influence Of Cartridge Diameter On The Effectiveness Of Dynamite, Charles Harding Noren

Masters Theses

"For many years the manufacturers of explosives have attempted to show the advantages of using dynamite of a cartridge diameter of at least 1-1/8 inches. Tests by the manufacturers and by the United States Bureau of Mines hare definitely shown that the dynamites prepared in larger diameter cartridges have several advantages: They are more sensitive to detonation; they detonate at a higher velocity; they are resistant to water; they are safer to use; and they are more stable than dynamites made in smaller diameter cartridges. In spite of these advantages listed, several large consumers still insist on smaller diameter cartridges. …

Properties Of Wire Suitable For The Fabrication Of Wire Cloth, Campbell William Floyd Funk Jan 1948

Properties Of Wire Suitable For The Fabrication Of Wire Cloth, Campbell William Floyd Funk

Masters Theses

"In the highly competative [sic] wire cloth industry, improvement of product quality is of paramount importance. With an eye to the future, the Ludlow Saylor Wire Company of St. Louis decided to embark upon a research program with the hope of improving the quality of their products above already high standards. An industrial research fellowship was instituted at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla for graduate research studies of the metallurgical, mechanical and chemical properties of wire as the [sic] pertain to the weaving of industrial wire cloth. Although relatively small quantities of wire are defective, their …

Studies Of Contact Angles On Oxidized Copper Minerals, John Stewart Carr Jan 1948

Studies Of Contact Angles On Oxidized Copper Minerals, John Stewart Carr

Masters Theses

"Effective flotation of an ore is the result of several factors: selection of suitable reagents; the proper combination of reagents, processing conditions of the operation proper such as time intervals involved and the machinery used. To focus the investigation on a specific field it was decided to investigate in some detail the behaviour of the more popular collectors toward oxidized copper minerals. This investigation was carried out chiefly by applying contact-angle measurements as obtained with the various collectors on the basic carbonate and oxide copper minerals. This basic information was desirable before carrying out actual flotation tests. There was little …

A Study Of Certain Ferromagnetic Alloys In The Systems Copper-Manganese-Indium And Copper-Manganese-Gallium, Frederick Arthur Hames Jan 1948

A Study Of Certain Ferromagnetic Alloys In The Systems Copper-Manganese-Indium And Copper-Manganese-Gallium, Frederick Arthur Hames

Doctoral Dissertations

"In 1898 F. Heusler discovered that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin are ferromagnetic. Since that time, ferromagnetic alloys have been reported to occur in the ternary systems copper-manganese-aluminum, copper-manganese-arsenic, copper-manganese-boron, copper-manganese-antimony, copper-manganese-zinc, silver-manganese-aluminum, and silver-manganese-tin. Such ferromagnetic alloys containing only non-ferromagnetic elements have come to be called "Heusler alloys."

From the metallographic standpoint, the ferromagnetic copper-manganese-aluminum and copper-manganese-tin alloys have been the most fully investigated of the Heusler alloys. These alloys owe their ferromagnetism to the beta phases in their respective systems. The structure of the beta phase is based on a body-centered cubic lattice.
