A Study Of High Strength, Heat Treated Plain Carbon Steels, Ing Shing Chien Jan 1966

A Study Of High Strength, Heat Treated Plain Carbon Steels, Ing Shing Chien

Masters Theses

"This work was undertaken as the initial step in a program of studying brittleness in carbon steel that has been heat treated to high strength levels.

The trend in modern technology is toward higher tensile strengths. In practice, only alloy steels are commonly heat treated to very high strength levels. AISI 4340 is one of the more commonly used steels when high strength is desired. It is also becoming almost standard practice to use some of the tool steels or highly alloyed maraging steels for high strength structural components.

For this study high strength in a heat treated steel is …

A Study Of The Removal Of Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate By Means Of A Column Packed With Sand Coated With Ferric Oxide, Chang I. Fung

Masters Theses

"Iron, precipitated in the form of hydroxides on sand particles (-48 + 65 mesh) and stabilized by drying at 100°C for 10 hours, was utilized to remove alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS) from aqueous solutions. Solutions containing a maximum of 5 mg/l ABS were passed through a glass column packed with treated sand. The ABS formed a complex with the iron precipitants which adhered to the sand particles.

Preliminary work, in which solutions containing 10 mg/l ABS were treated with various concentrations of FeCl2 at the equivalence point (pH about 9.5), verified the fact that ABS could be removed by …

Fast Flux Measurement By A Single Multi-Threshold Foil, Kenneth Lawrence Cage Jan 1966

Fast Flux Measurement By A Single Multi-Threshold Foil, Kenneth Lawrence Cage

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the fast neutron spectrum by use of a single multi-threshold foil. The foils and the elements which constituted the foils were selected by the following criteria: availability of adequate cross-section data, energy dependence of the given reaction, gamma radiation emitted during decay and the half-life of the daughter. The two foils selected were an In-Fe- P pellet, and ALCOA 2509 (Al-Ni). The gamma spectrum of each constitute was stripped from the composite spectra using a least-squares fit. The activation results were utilized to calculate the fast flux using the weighted orthonormal method. …

An Investigation Of Failure Patterns Of Layered Specimens Loaded In Uniaxial Compression, Narendra Y. B. Choudary Jan 1966

An Investigation Of Failure Patterns Of Layered Specimens Loaded In Uniaxial Compression, Narendra Y. B. Choudary

Masters Theses

"Uniaxial compressive strength for two and three-layered specimens was obtained with different thicknesses of layers and also for different length to diameter ratios. The fracture and failure pattern was studied. Shear and extension fractures were observed in the layers. Geometry and end conditions of the specimen had a great influence in the failure and fracture pattern.

The uniaxial compressive strength of a layered specimen was found to be lower than the weighted average strength and either low or high when compared to the arithmetic average strength, depending on the ratio of the heights of the layers. The compressive strength of …

Rc-Tunnel Diode Network Synthesis, Jerry Dale Lee Jan 1966

Rc-Tunnel Diode Network Synthesis, Jerry Dale Lee

Masters Theses

"The synthesis of networks having prescribed transfer functions using resistors, capacitors, and one tunnel diode is presented.

The restrictions on the given transfer function are that it be a ratio of two polynomials in s, its poles lie on the finite, negative real axis of the s plane, and its numerator polynomial have only real coefficients, with a positive leading coefficient.

In general, this synthesis results in two two-port networks, each having a common connection between one input and one output terminal, connected either in parallel or series.

Procedures are presented for realizing any one of the several two-port network …

The Constant Impedance Tapered Lossless Transmission Line, Yu Kuo Chen Jan 1966

The Constant Impedance Tapered Lossless Transmission Line, Yu Kuo Chen

Masters Theses

"Considerable work has been done on the theory and development of the distributed RC network which is a special case of the general distributed network type of transmission line.

Sir William Thompson analyzed telegraph cables, assuming the RC line as a model. Oliver Heaviside made numerous contributions to transmission line theory. The solution of a two-wire transmission line with constant parameters R and C is obtainable by direct solution of the telegraphist's equations which are developed from the equivalent circuit of an incremental length of the network. The sinusoidal steady-state solutions of certain tapered RC lines have been exhibited. The …

Study Of Heat And Mass Transfer Through Non-Wettable Porous Membrane, Rajender Kumar Rohatgi

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to study the use of non-wettable porous membranes for simultaneous heat transfer and mass transfer of water from a hot salt solution stream to a cold distilled water stream, the streams being in countercurrent flow separated by the membrane. This type of mass transfer was achieved in the experiments, and mass and heat transfer coefficients were measured.

The membranes studied in this work were made of fiberglas treated with Teflon dispersion and aluminum sulphate. The fiberglas membranes yielded desired results. Empirical correlations were proposed which predict values of heat and mass transfer coefficients close …

Fluid Flow In Pipes Of Rectangular Cross Sections, Bruce Harold Bradford Jan 1966

Fluid Flow In Pipes Of Rectangular Cross Sections, Bruce Harold Bradford

Masters Theses

"Head loss due to fluid friction was measured in smooth conduits of rectangular cross section. The data covers the laminar and turbulent range. Results were compared with previous theoretical and empirical data.

The customary practice of calculating head loss in non-circular conduits by use of the friction factor obtained on an “equivalent” circular pipe was discussed. It was found that this practice is successful in square cross sections undergoing turbulent flow. In laminar flow, however, this method is not accurate"--Abstract, page ii.

A Procedure For Analysis Of Three-Segment Symmetrical Balcony Beams, Ronald A. Hansen Jan 1966

A Procedure For Analysis Of Three-Segment Symmetrical Balcony Beams, Ronald A. Hansen

Masters Theses

"A procedure for analysis of three-segment symmetrical balcony beams unsymmetrically loaded was derived whereby the normally complicated energy solution is eliminated. A moment distribution technique is used in the solution of the first and second phases of the problem. Tables are given to aid in determining the proper distribution factors. Due to the complexity of the third phase, a table of solutions is given for varying values of length, geometry, etc.. An example problem is also given demonstrating the use of interpolation within the tables"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of The Effect Of Magnetite Additions To Shell Molds On The Surface Quality Of Low Carbon Steel Castings, Robert C. Tooke Jan 1966

A Study Of The Effect Of Magnetite Additions To Shell Molds On The Surface Quality Of Low Carbon Steel Castings, Robert C. Tooke

Masters Theses

"Shell molds containing additions of ten to fifty percent magnetite, Fe3O4, of various particle sizes were cured by induction heating. For comparison, regular shell molds were made using silica and zircon sand. Low carbon steel was cast into all of the molds.

Castings produced from the regular shell molds exhibited poor surfaces due to mold expansion. Magnetite additions eliminated the expansion defects from the casting surfaces.

Excellent surfaces were obtained on the low carbon steel castings with proper selection of the magnetite particle size and the percent of magnetite added. Improper combinations of size and amount …

The Effect Of Initial Moisture Content On The Swelling Characteristics Of Putnam Soil, William Howell Branum Jan 1966

The Effect Of Initial Moisture Content On The Swelling Characteristics Of Putnam Soil, William Howell Branum

Masters Theses

"The literature on swell and swell pressure in expansive soils was reviewed. The effect of initial moisture content on the swelling properties of untreated Putnam silt loam was investigated by performing free swell and swell pressure tests on specimens with varying initial moisture contents compacted to a constant dry density. The free swell tests were conducted by allowing the samples to swell freely under a low load (the weight of the plunger and the porous stone in the swelling apparatus) and measuring the volume change that resulted. The swell pressure tests were performed using two different procedures: (1) determining the …

Tensile Strength Of Prereacted Porcelain Compositions, Chester Lee Hill Jan 1966

Tensile Strength Of Prereacted Porcelain Compositions, Chester Lee Hill

Masters Theses

"The tensile strengths of two porcelain compositions containing prereacted silica and feldspar have been determined with the diametral loading technique. A comparison was made between the strength of the prereacted samples and the strength of samples of the same compositions, but prepared in the conventional manner. At the optimum firing temperature, no significant differences in tensile strengths were observed between the prereacted and control samples for the two compositions studied. At temperatures below and above the optimum firing temperature, the prereacted samples had the higher tensile strengths. The tensile strengths are correlated with the average size of the quartz particles …

The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosity Of Polyisobutylene Solutions, Lung-Yu Chou Jan 1966

The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosity Of Polyisobutylene Solutions, Lung-Yu Chou

Masters Theses

"In the past twenty years the viscosity of dilute polymer solutions (i.e., where the solute molecules are far apart) has been investigated in great detail, both theoretically and experimentally. The viscosity characteristics of such systems are well-understood.

Only a few studies have been made of the effect of concentration on the viscosity of polymer solutions in the concentration range where the polymer molecules begin to overlap. This range of concentrations is important in practical applications such as dry spinning of fibers, cross-graded automotive motor oils and in many industrial formulations where polymers are used to thicken solvent vehicles. Development of …

An Analysis Of Neutron Resonance Detectors In Critical Uranyl-Fluoride Heavy Water Systems., William H. Roach Jan 1966

An Analysis Of Neutron Resonance Detectors In Critical Uranyl-Fluoride Heavy Water Systems., William H. Roach

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

The measurement of neutron flux spectra in reactors is a problem which can be approached in several ways, depending on the information desired. For high energy measurements, threshold detectors are often used; if spatial information of the flux is required, some type of fission detector may be employed. For flux magnitude measurements in the epithermal energy range, foils of elements which have strong neutron absorption resonances are commonly utilized. If the resonance is sufficiently isolated from other resonances and the contribution from the resonance to the total resonance absorption integral of the element is large, then it is a fairly …

Nonparametric Detection Of Signals Causing Arbitrary Changes In The Accompanying Noise Backgrounds, John Joseph Komo Jan 1966

Nonparametric Detection Of Signals Causing Arbitrary Changes In The Accompanying Noise Backgrounds, John Joseph Komo

Doctoral Dissertations

"The detection of signals in the presence of noise is an important problem in the field of communications. The detection problem is concerned with the design of systems which determine only the presence or absence of a signal which occurs with background noise. An example of considerable importance, which is encountered quite frequently in practice, is the radar detection problem. In the radar problem it is desired to determine the presence of a target by detecting the presence of a radar return signal in noise. Another example is the seismic exploration problem which utilizes the detection of reflected signals from …

A Study Of The Supercooling Behavior Of High Purity Liquid Bismuth, B. L. Bramfitt Jan 1966

A Study Of The Supercooling Behavior Of High Purity Liquid Bismuth, B. L. Bramfitt

Doctoral Dissertations

"This investigation involves a study of the supercooling behavior of pure bismuth as affected by the melting atmosphere, the amount of superheat, and the intentional addition of metallic and non-metallic foreign materials to the melt. It was found that the amount of oxide on the melt surface is a controlling factor in the degree of supercooling obtainable in bismuth. In the presence of a thick bismuth oxide surface layer the amount of superheat below a 15°C drastically decreases the amount of supercooling due to the retention of nuclei in the surface film that promote nucleation upon cooling of the melt. …

A Theoretical Approach To The Problem Of Determining Ejecta Volumes In A Gravitational Vacuumed Half-Space, William J. Karwoski Jan 1966

A Theoretical Approach To The Problem Of Determining Ejecta Volumes In A Gravitational Vacuumed Half-Space, William J. Karwoski

Doctoral Dissertations

"The formation of an explosion crater is a highly complex process. All of the pertinent parameters governing the mechanisms of cratering are not clearly understood or known. Many cratering experiments were performed in desert alluvium in an effort to relate crater dimensions with charge weight and depth of burst. Various scaling laws were devised in an attempt to correlate the data gathered from these experiments. When cube-root scaling was used to correlate results of tests conducted at a constant scaled depth of burst, larger charge weights consistently gave smaller scaled results. This was particularly true of apparent crater volume. When …

Aeration Studies In Submerged Fermentations Using A Steam-Sterilizable Dissolved Oxygen Sensor Of Improved Design, Carl J. Wallace Jan 1966

Aeration Studies In Submerged Fermentations Using A Steam-Sterilizable Dissolved Oxygen Sensor Of Improved Design, Carl J. Wallace

Doctoral Dissertations

"Large-scale submerged fermentations have been important for many years for the production of antibiotics, vitamins, enzymes, etc.; however, aeration studies have been severely restricted in these processes because of the unavailability of adequate oxygen sensing equipment.

A steam-sterilizable oxygen sensor of improved design was developed out of an investigation of several potential sensors. This rapidly responding galvanic probe made use of a lead anode, a silver cathode, an acetate buffer as the electrolyte, and a one mil Teflon® membrane as the diffusion barrier. Its sensitivity was approximately 40 µamps and full response required approximately 5 minutes.

Use was made of …

Numerical Solution Of Water Hammer Analysis Including Friction Losses, Lih Hsun Weng Jan 1966

Numerical Solution Of Water Hammer Analysis Including Friction Losses, Lih Hsun Weng

Masters Theses

"The water hammer phenomena is a very important problem in pipe lines and gate operations. There are many analytical solutions tor water hammer problems including friction losses, but most of them use a linear approximation tor the friction effect that is different from the actual situation. Also the existing methods for solving water hammer problems involve difficult mathematical operations that are impractical and inaccurate.

In order to find a more rapid method for solving water hammer problems including friction losses and to obtain closer agreement with the actual condition, the problem is solved here using the basic partial differential equations …

Study Of Mass Transfer Through Porous, Water-Repellent Membranes, Virendra V. Tanna Jan 1966

Study Of Mass Transfer Through Porous, Water-Repellent Membranes, Virendra V. Tanna

Masters Theses

"A new method of desalination using a porous, water-repellent membrane was studied. The membrane utilized surface forces to support a vapor phase in its pores which separated the salt water from fresh water. The method used a vapor pressure difference across the membrane as the driving force for mass transfer of water from the salt water phase to the fresh water. This vapor pressure difference was obtained by maintaining a temperature difference between the two liquid phases.

The experimental data and results indicated the feasibility of vaporization through porous, water-repellent membranes. The flux of water through a membrane made of …

Measurement Of The Velocity And Temperature Profiles Of Air Swirling Through A Conical Shaped Nozzle, Stephen Abner Thompson Jan 1966

Measurement Of The Velocity And Temperature Profiles Of Air Swirling Through A Conical Shaped Nozzle, Stephen Abner Thompson

Masters Theses

"A study was conducted to determine the velocity and temperature distributions in swirling flow of air through a converging nozzle. Radial traverses were taken at three axial positions with a specially designed pitot tube constructed of hypodermic needles. The most significant finding was the large magnitude of the radial velocity component. A combination of reversed axial flow along the nozzle axis, and an outward flow near the nozzle surface was also experienced. An increase of temperature with increasing radial position may be attributed to the Ranque-Hilsch effect"--Abstract, page ii.
