Inplane And Out Of Plane Buckling Of Thick Rings Subjected To Hydrostatic Pressure, Thomas Michael Juliano May 1979

Inplane And Out Of Plane Buckling Of Thick Rings Subjected To Hydrostatic Pressure, Thomas Michael Juliano

Dissertations

The problem of inplane and out of plane buckling of a thick circular ring subjected to a hydrostatic pressure is analyzed from first principals. The equations of equilibrium from nonlinear elasticity theory are used to describe two adjacent equilibrium positions, i.e., an initial and final state. The initial position problem is assumed to be governed by linear theory. The resulting incremental value equations obtained by subtracting the two equilibrium states, are also linear in nature. These problems are reduced to a one dimensional ring theory problem by the method of power series expansion of the displacements in the radial and …

Noise Performance Of The Klapper-Kratt Low Delay Fm Detector, Allan Brown Tarbell May 1979

Noise Performance Of The Klapper-Kratt Low Delay Fm Detector, Allan Brown Tarbell

Dissertations

In this dissertation the dual differentiator version of the Klapper-Kratt FM detector family is investigated with additive Gaussian noise. Prior analysis of this new detector family has been limited to the noiseless case.

The investigation was conducted both analytically and experimentally. First, the dual differentiator version of the Klapper-Kratt detector was mathematically analyzed, assuming an unmodulated carrier plus additive Gaussian noise. This analysis was verified by assembling the detector and measuring its performance in the laboratory.

It was discovered that the Klapper-Kratt detector without limiter performs identically to the conventional limiter discriminator in the linear improvement region. When compared to …

The Use Of Natural Sorbents For The Treatment Of Industrial Sludge Leachate, Mung Shium Jack Sheih May 1979

The Use Of Natural Sorbents For The Treatment Of Industrial Sludge Leachate, Mung Shium Jack Sheih

Dissertations

A sorbent treatment process has been developed which uses natural clay soils and fly ashes as sorbents in the treatment of the hazardous contaminants of potential sludge leachate emanating from industrial landfills. Natural sorbents (i.e., vermiculite, illite, kaolinite, zeolite, acidic and basic fly ashes) were evaluated for the removal of specific cations, anions, and organics from leachates generated from three industrial sludges (i.e., calcium fluoride, metal finishing, and petroleum). The laboratory results indicate that, rather than a single sorbent, a combination of acidic and basic sorbents in a layered system is required to reduce for the measurable contaminants present in …

Signal Processing Techniques For Analysis Of Heart Sounds And Electrocardiograms, Alan D. Bernstein May 1979

Signal Processing Techniques For Analysis Of Heart Sounds And Electrocardiograms, Alan D. Bernstein

Dissertations

Audible heart sounds represent less than 5% of the vibrational energy associated with the cardiac cycle. In this study, experiments have been conducted to explore the feasibility of examining cardiac vibration by means of a single display encompassing the entire bandwidth of the oscillations and relating components at different frequencies. Zero-phase-shift digital filtering is shown to be required in producing such displays, which extend from a recognizable phonocardiogram at one frequency extreme to a recognizable apexcardiogram at the other. Certain features in mid-systole and early diastole, observed by means of this technique, appear not to have been previously described.

Frequency …

Synthesis Of Multiarea Grid Power Systems, Bharat C. Patel May 1979

Synthesis Of Multiarea Grid Power Systems, Bharat C. Patel

Dissertations

This dissertation presents improved development in the formation of a generalized transmission loss (B)-matrix for a multiarea grid power system. In the procedure, the individual tie powers of each area are replaced by the net interchange, sneak and circulating powers. The latter two variables are directly eliminated in the power reference frame using actual impedances, unlike current methods that require the elimination of sneak and circulating currents, the formation of complex tie current model and the complex tie power model. Consequently, manipulation of large complex current, power and impedance matrices is avoided reducing both computer time and memory requirement. Further, …

A Three-Dimensional Kinematic Model Of The Human Knee, Wayne Ke-Wung Li May 1979

A Three-Dimensional Kinematic Model Of The Human Knee, Wayne Ke-Wung Li

Theses

This thesis describes two kinematic models of human knee which may be used to study the motion of the knee and the forces in the ligaments of the knee. In one model, the ligaments are simulated by rigid links connected to links representing the articulating bones at the centroids of the areas of insertion of the ligaments. The condylar higher pair connections are simulated by equivalent linkages connected by resolutes. In an advanced model, the rigid ligament links are replaced by springs.

The IMP procedure, a powerful kinematic linkage analysis method, is employed to study the motion and forces in …

A Study On The Growth And Asparaginase Production Of Vibrio Succinogenes In A Chemostat, Preston David Krautheim May 1979

A Study On The Growth And Asparaginase Production Of Vibrio Succinogenes In A Chemostat, Preston David Krautheim

Theses

A continuous fermentation assembly was constructed and studies on the growth of the organism, Vibrio succinogenes, and its production of asparaginase was conducted. Results were compared with that already performed on a batch system and showed that a continuous fermentation produced 31.83 I.U. enzymes/mM ammonium formate compared to 17.4 I.U. enzyme/mM formate for batch.

Some of the runs performed indicated that the organism was washing out or giving very low specific growth rates. It was decided that this was not due to operational parameters of the chemostat, but possible chemical contamination in the medium. With all things considered, a continuous …

Axisymmetric Air Jet Impinging On A Convex Hemispherical Plate, David C. Chan May 1979

Axisymmetric Air Jet Impinging On A Convex Hemispherical Plate, David C. Chan

Theses

Experimental investigation was conducted on an axisymmetric, submerged air jet impinging normally on a smooth convex hemisphere. Three nozzle diameters of 0.5" (12.7mm), 0.375" (9.525mm) and 0.25" (6.35mm) were used and tests were run at Reynolds number range of 14,700 to 84,000.

The results obtained in the free jet and deflection zones were found to confirm the works of previous investigators. As for the fully developed wall jet region, the following points are noted:

  1. The maximum wall-velocity decay was found to possess a slightly higher rate than that of either the flat plate or the concave hemisphere.

  2. The mean velocity …

An Equilibrium Theory Of The Ph-Parametric Pump, Charles Omotayo Kerobo May 1979

An Equilibrium Theory Of The Ph-Parametric Pump, Charles Omotayo Kerobo

Theses

Parametric pumping, both batch and continuous, and cycling zone adsorption are theoretically scrutinized for various operating conditions by using the concept of equilibrium stages. The model system is Haemoglobin-Albumin-CM sepharose, a physical system in which a local equilibrium between liquid and sorbent in the layers of the separating medium in the column is characterized. For the batch process, the steady-state concentrations in both top and bottom reservoirs are found to be independent of the number of equilibrium stages, provided that a = 1 (i.e., number of transfer steps/number of stages).. For continuous parapump process, separation is enhanced with decreasing top …

A New Mathematical Model For Nephron Macromolecular Selectivity, John Anthony Domiter May 1979

A New Mathematical Model For Nephron Macromolecular Selectivity, John Anthony Domiter

Theses

A mathematical model describing the displayed selectivity of the kidney nephron to macromolecules of varying particle size is presented. Diffusion and electrical forces are considered to be the sole mechanisms of transfer. The mass transfer principles responsible for selectivity are considered to occur within the capillary structure, and not within the membrane wall. A charge is assumed to be characteristic of the macromolecule and the membrane wall. Models describing both charged and uncharged solutes are developed.

A non-linear least squares technique, developed by Marquardt, is used to curve fit the derived functions to data relating fractional clearances of dextran and …

Calculations Of Isobaric Phase Enthalpy Differences For Binary Systems From Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data, Steven Merrill Harvey May 1979

Calculations Of Isobaric Phase Enthalpy Differences For Binary Systems From Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data, Steven Merrill Harvey

Theses

Equations relating isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium data to heats of vaporization are useful in testing the thermodynamic consistency of experimental VLE data and in the design of distillation equipment. Several researchers have proposed such equations based on the Gibbs-Duhem equation. At low pressures, simplified versions of these equations were successfully used to test the consistency of published VLE and enthalpy data. At high pressures, equilibrium phase enthalpy differences were calculated from rigorous equations using a modified form of the Redlich-Kwong equation to calculate fugacity coefficients. As expected, the relative error of using the simplified equations was found to increase with increasing …

The Preparation, Spectra, And Conformations Of Cis, Cis-, Cis, Trans-, And Trans, Trans- Dipropenyl Ethers, Helen C. Hollein May 1979

The Preparation, Spectra, And Conformations Of Cis, Cis-, Cis, Trans-, And Trans, Trans- Dipropenyl Ethers, Helen C. Hollein

Theses

Cis,cis-dipropenyl ether was prepared by potassium t-butoxide catalyzed rearrangement of diallyl ether in diglyme solution. Pyrolysis was used in an attempt to produce an isomeric dipropenyl ether mixture with a high percentage of the less stable trans, trans isomer; 21.6% trans,trans-dipropenyl ether was produced by pyrolysis at 395°C, but formation of an azeotropic byproduct in significant quantities negated the feasibility of this synthesis. A mixture of 45.7% cis,cis-, 43.6% cis,trans-, and 10.7% trans,trans-dipropenyl ether was produced by mercuric acetate catalyzed isomerization at 80°C, and the mixture was separated on a Nester/Faust spinning band column of two hundred theoretical plates.

A Feasibility Analysis Of A Directly Sun-Pumped Carbon Dioxide Laser In Space, Seiichi Morimoto May 1979

A Feasibility Analysis Of A Directly Sun-Pumped Carbon Dioxide Laser In Space, Seiichi Morimoto

Dissertations and Theses

The possibility of using sunlight to pump a CW carbon dioxide laser has been analyzed. Such a laser could be of interest for such applications as space communication and power transmission. In order to optically pump CO2 using sunlight, the intense vibrational-rotational absorption bands of CO2 in the 4.3 micron spectral region would have to be utilized. The total pumping power from sunlight can be calculated from the known data of the solar spectral irradiance outside the atmosphere and the infrared absorption by carbon dioxide at 4.3 microns. The pumping power is proportional to the collector area of …

The Effects Of Artificial Destratification On Water Quality In Hyrum Reservoir, John W. Gill May 1979

The Effects Of Artificial Destratification On Water Quality In Hyrum Reservoir, John W. Gill

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Hyrum Reservoir, Utah, was studied for one year during an artificial destratification project. Previously Drury et al. (1975) had studied Hyrum Reservoir for one year of stratified and one year of destratified conditions. The redistribution of dissolved oxygen to the hypolimnion significantly changed conditions for chemical and biological activities in the lower depths of the reservoir. The Aphanizomenon bloom increased with each year of destratification. The reservoir was changed by destratification so as to be suitable habitat for trout on a year round basis. Aerobic conditions prevented iron from being released from the sediment into the aqueous phase. In summary …

Development Of High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography Techniques For The Analysis Of Wastewater Effluent, Glenn Douglas Pierce Apr 1979

Development Of High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography Techniques For The Analysis Of Wastewater Effluent, Glenn Douglas Pierce

Civil Engineering ETDs

This investigation characterized a biological secondary wastewater effluent by conventional wastewater analysis parameters, evaluated the capabilities of activated carbon and macroreticular resin for recovering residual organics from the effluent, correlated conventional parameters with carbon recoveries, developed high-pressure liquid chromatographic techniques for separation of organics in the recovered mixtures and identified a selected extract fraction. The Organics-Carbon Adsorbable Standard Method was adapted for use with a low turbidity effluent and a mass balance based on non-volatile total organic carbon was developed, demonstrating that the sorptive capacity of the system was not exceeded by a 60-1 sample. Ten individual carbon chloroform extracts …

Classical Modeling Of A Phosphate Molecule (Including 3-D Computer Graphics Display), Ronald A. Tafoya Apr 1979

Classical Modeling Of A Phosphate Molecule (Including 3-D Computer Graphics Display), Ronald A. Tafoya

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

An investigation is made of the classical force terms necessary to model adequately the structure and interatomic forces of the phosphate molecule. The two principal considerations chosen for use in judging the performance of models were:

1. Agreement with empirical spectral data on normal mode vibrational frequencies

2. Agreement with other known physical characteristics of the phosphate molecule

The performance of all models was good. Agreement with normal mode frequencies and phosphorus-oxygen bond lengths ranged from an RMS error of 5.4% in Model one to an RMS error of 1.5% in Model Five. An examination was made of six different …

Deep Penetration Of Electrons Into Homogeneous Media By The Method Of Condensed Collisions, Joseph Francis Janni Apr 1979

Deep Penetration Of Electrons Into Homogeneous Media By The Method Of Condensed Collisions, Joseph Francis Janni

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The objective of this dissertation was to develop an accurate and efficient alternative to presently available methods of calculating the steady state penetration of electrons deep into homogeneous materials. A thorough solution must include scalar fluxes, net currents, angular distributions, and differential energy spectra. This research has successfully developed the method of condensed collisions, which provides an alternative to methods now in use for the solution of the electron transport problem. The condensed collsion method is general, but has been applied specifically to deep penetration electron transport to demonstrate its utility. The present aplication was for electrons having incident energies …

A Numerical Investigation Of Nonlinear Resistance In Second-Order Autonomous Dynamic Networks, John Jerome Bornholdt Apr 1979

A Numerical Investigation Of Nonlinear Resistance In Second-Order Autonomous Dynamic Networks, John Jerome Bornholdt

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Most approaches to the analysis of autonomous nonlinear networks fall under one or more of three categories: topological techniques, stability analysis, and approximate methods. The first method is universal, linear or nonlinear. The application of computer techniques has given strong emphasis to the latter. Approximate methods can give results on estimations of how network components affect stability.

This paper is an investigation of the stability of nonlinear resistance in autonomous dynamic networks through approximate methods.

A system that is both unforced and time-invariant is called autonomous. Linear autonomous networks lend themselves to general analytic solutions. With nonlinear autonomous networks, however, …
