Computational Method For Solving The Kinematics Of Mechanisms Using Matrix Methods, Rajat Pardal Jan 1986

Computational Method For Solving The Kinematics Of Mechanisms Using Matrix Methods, Rajat Pardal

Theses

This thesis deals with the computational methods for kinematics of mechanisms using matrix methods. The method is particularly suited to the complex mechanism problems for which hand calculations are difficult. The thesis first reviews the matrix methods on which the program IMP is based. A computer program developed by Ve Tung using the same theory is enhanced in this thesis. By using this revised program, comparison between the non-linear algebraic approach and the matrix methods developed in this thesis has been made by the help of suitable examples. Further, it has been proved that the Integrated Mechanisms Program does not …

Design Of Code Division Multiple Access Systems, Nakrendrakumar Patel

Theses

The intent of the work "Design of Code Division Multiple Access systems (CDMA) " is to consider different aspects of design with their effect on system performance. The generation of binary shift register sequences, that is maximal length sequences, with their properties are presented. From these maximal length sequences the Gold codes are obtained which are the most suitable approximately orthogonal codes for designing CDMA systems. These are discussed with their specific crosscorrelation properties. An extensive discussion is given of the difficult problem of synchronization, thatis bothacquisitionandtracking of pseudonoise sequences. Different synchronizing methods are discussed along with their relative performance. …

Identification Of Material Constants Of Human Bone Using Finite Element Method For Micropolar Elasticity, Sajid Mannan Sayed Jan 1986

Identification Of Material Constants Of Human Bone Using Finite Element Method For Micropolar Elasticity, Sajid Mannan Sayed

Theses

Bone differs from most engineering materials in the composition of its structure. The classical theory of elasticity fails to correctly predict the stress concentration effects in bones with precracked or notched surfaces, and can be applied only to those materials which exhibit more homogeneity and isotropicity than bone. Therefore, generalized continuum theories, which have addditional degrees of freedom, must be used to determine the stress concentration effects in human bone, especially in regions of high strain gradient, such as a hole or an interface.

In this thesis, efforts have been made to identify the material constants of human bone since …

Development Of Dynamic Analysis Program Mini-Dymac, Shang-Rou Shien

Theses

The computer program DYMAC developed by B. Paul automatically generates and numerically integrates the equations of motion of closed loop multi-body mechanical systems. The theory behind this program is Larange's form of d'Alembert's principle. However, it is not an easy task for the beginners to understand this program completely. If there is a simplified version of the program, it will be of great help for those people to understand the essential organization of the program.

Using the same theory of DYMAC, computer program MINI-DYMAC is developed in this thesis and hoped to serve as an educational version of DYMAC. For …

Similitude Analysis Of Model Experiments Of Piles Driven To Rock, George Nicou Georghoudes Jan 1986

Similitude Analysis Of Model Experiments Of Piles Driven To Rock, George Nicou Georghoudes

Theses

This thesis investigates the similitude requirements for the Dynamic Pile Driving Apparatus in the New Jersey Institute of Technology Laboratory. The apparatus is being used to perform model tests to study bearing stratum fracturing caused by driving pile groups to weak rock.

Two approaches were used to establish similitude between the model and actual field conditions. The first approach utilizes dimensional analysis to develop a relationship between the energy delivered to the rock mass by the pile and the unit length. The second approach proposes a procedure to establish an empirical relationship between the threshold energy to fracture the rock …

Electrochemical Reduction Of Quaternary Ammonium Salts, Rudolph K. Kapichak Jan 1986

Electrochemical Reduction Of Quaternary Ammonium Salts, Rudolph K. Kapichak

Theses

The electrochemical reduction of two highly hindered quaternary ammonium salts was attempted. The reductions were performed in hexamethylphosphoramide at a controlled potential using platinum electrodes. It was anticipated that these reductions would provide a route to the formation of anti-Bredt bridgehead olefins. This work is an extension of the work of Dubois, Monvernay and Lacaze who electrochemically reduced quaternary ammonium salts such as trimethyl-t-butylammonium iodide (XX).

Trimethy1-2,4,4-trimethy1-2-pentylammonium iodide (XXIII) was reduced to form 2,4,4-trimethyl-l-pentene (XXVI) and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane (XXV). The yields of the two runs of this reduction were 10% and 20% and in the first run of the reduction 75% …

Effects Of Adhesion On The Active Pressure Exerted On A Retaining Wall, Thomas G. Gallagher Jan 1986

Effects Of Adhesion On The Active Pressure Exerted On A Retaining Wall, Thomas G. Gallagher

Theses

This paper investigated the effect of adhesion on the active pressure behind a retaining wall. No equation existed to solve for the active pressure for a sloped backfill that also takes into consideration cohesive and adhesive forces on a failure wedge. The trial—wedge solution(Culmann method) considers these parameters, but since it is a trial and error method it takes up too much time to solve. A shorter solution is desirable. An equation for the active pressure in terms of ρ(angle between horizontal and failure plane) was derived. A closed form solution for earth pressure was developed by setting the derivative …

Application Of Optical And Esr Measurements To The Solar Disinfection Of Drinking Water, Mary-Catherine Spyridion Cotis Jan 1986

Application Of Optical And Esr Measurements To The Solar Disinfection Of Drinking Water, Mary-Catherine Spyridion Cotis

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The idea of decontamination by exposure to sunlight is not, in any way, a novel one. It is a traditional practice for housewives to keep bed covers, for a short while, in a sunny place, and to expose white clothes to direct sunrays, to make them look " whiter "

This idea was grasped by a team of Lebanese researchers, who applied this method to disinfect small amounts of drinking water. This very method is adopted, through the present work, to the Egyptian conditions. It is found that contaminated water is perfectly fit for human consumption after being exposed to …

The Effect Of Thickness On Neuber's Rule For Estimation Of Fatigue Life, Shahram Elmi Jan 1986

The Effect Of Thickness On Neuber's Rule For Estimation Of Fatigue Life, Shahram Elmi

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

To predict the fatigue life of a notched member from a strain-life curve, the high strain concentration at the root of the notch must be known. For determining this high (post yield) strain, the Neuber’s Rule (for plane stress) and linear rule (for plane strain) can be applied. To investigate the accuracy of these method a notched member which is subjected to fully reversed cyclic loading is analyzed by the finite element method. Moreover, members with different thicknesses are analyzed with three dimensional elements, and a correlation between plane and three dimensional data is obtained. This correlation may be used …

Noise In Interferometric Sensors, Mark Phillips Jan 1986

Noise In Interferometric Sensors, Mark Phillips

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A noise analysis is conducted on an interferometric sensor employed in the study of underwater acoustic noise. Primary emphasis is placed on finding the output Signal to Noise Ratio of the sensor.

Once the initial problem of the type of noise is established, the analysis proceeds along fairly classical lines. Field equations establish the signal reaching the director. Linear filter analysis establishes the nature of the spectrum after passing through a lowpass filter. Finally, second moment theory is used to derive expressions for the output Signal to Noise Ratio.

It is noted that the random ocean noise introduced to the …
