Novel High Resolution Columns For Gas Chromatography, Douglas Kenneth Stout May 1987

Novel High Resolution Columns For Gas Chromatography, Douglas Kenneth Stout

Theses

A study was conducted to determine if BN would be a reliable solid phase or support for open tubular capillary columns and to develop a technique for the deposition of BN on the column's inner walls. The theoretical plate results for constructed precoated BN columns demonstrated that BN can be employed as solid stationary phase, but evinces low separation characteristics due to the nature of the drawing process. The development of a simple BN precoating process was tested on various diameter capillary columns and found to provide an excellent support for highly polar liquid stationary phases. Capillary columns with a …

Geometric And Enthalpic Calculational Study Of Monosubstituted Cyclobutanes ; Attempted Synthesis Of 1,3-Diphenyl-2,2,4,4-Tetrafluorobicyclo [1.1.0] Butane, Jose Luis Reyesgavilan

Theses

The work undertaken in this thesis is in two parts. In the first, the structure and heat of formation of substituted cyclobutanes were studied via the computer program MMII using an IBM PCXT personal computer with a math co-processor chip. Structurally, a trend was seen to be followed in which bulkier substituents were pushed away from any steric interaction with the ring. This was accomplished by having the latter alter its puckering angle, C2C1C4 angle, HCX angle, and to a smaller extent, the bond lengths immediately adjacent to the substituted carbon atom. This results demonstrated that the ring was very …

Theoretical Studies Of A Norbornane Mimic Of Acyl-Alpha-Chymotrypsin, Pin-Nan Chen May 1987

Theoretical Studies Of A Norbornane Mimic Of Acyl-Alpha-Chymotrypsin, Pin-Nan Chen

Theses

Molecular mechanics calculations were used to investigate the structural flexibility of the norbornane mimic which is a model of an acyl-alpha-chymotrypsin intermediate. The Amber molecular mechanics force field was used to perform the conformational analysis.

Comparison of the optimized conformations of different energy has shown the relative structural rigidity of this molecule. Structural superposition of the minimized mimic to the native conformation of chymotrypsin shows that the mimic has a very similar spatial arrangement of its functional groups compared to the catalytic triad of the real enzyme.

Molecular electrostatic potential maps calculated in planes parallel to the average plane containing …

Hydrodechlorination Reactions On Silica-Supported Rhodium Catalysts, Yung-Ming Chen May 1987

Hydrodechlorination Reactions On Silica-Supported Rhodium Catalysts, Yung-Ming Chen

Theses

The objectives of this study were to investigate the pathways of the hydrodechlorination reactions over silica-supported Rh catalysts as well as identify selectivities and deactivation properties.

Reaction of 1,2-dichloroethane with hydrogen over Rh/SiO2 catalyst was studied in the temperature range 200 to 300°C. Formation of two intermediates was proposed while 1,2-dichloroethane was adsorbed on the catalyst, the reactive intermediates then produce ethane, ethylene, chloroethane and methane. From the methane formation, it was inferred that the ethane hydrogenolysis occured over the Rh/SiO2 catalysts. Higher conversion to C1 and C2 hydrocarbons was observed at higher reaction temperature. The …

Separation Of Chromium From Waste Sludges By An Electric Membrane Process, Freeman Nai-Tchun Ho May 1987

Separation Of Chromium From Waste Sludges By An Electric Membrane Process, Freeman Nai-Tchun Ho

Theses

The process is characterized by using metallic membrane as a filter which is charged by a separate DC-power supply and it may become experimentally very effective in increasing the separation potency and migration flux. The technique of integrating migration with electromembrane was evaluated for the removal of chromium. A Study Of The Dynamics Of Microbial Competition For A Single Resource In A Chemostat Between Reversible Attachment To Solid Surfaces, Pericles Theofilos Lagonikos May 1987

A Study Of The Dynamics Of Microbial Competition For A Single Resource In A Chemostat Between Reversible Attachment To Solid Surfaces, Pericles Theofilos Lagonikos

Theses

It is known that two microbial populations competing for a single non-renewable resource in a homogeneous environment with time-invariant inputs cannot coexist in a steady state. The case where two microbial populations exhibiting reversible attachment to the walls of a chemostat compete for a single resource is studied theoretically. Because of the cell's attachment to the walls, the environment is no longer homogeneous. The present study considers the case where the attached cells form no more than a monolayer. The Baltzis-Fredrickson model is used to represent the attachment to the walls. In one system the attachment of cells of the …

Just-In-Time In The United States : Culture And Competitive Manufacturing, Wolfram Pabst Von Ohain May 1987

Just-In-Time In The United States : Culture And Competitive Manufacturing, Wolfram Pabst Von Ohain

Theses

Richard Schonberger, 'the' Guru of Just-in-Time' in the United States, wrote in the preface of his 1986 book World Class Manufacturing:

"...Japanese success is rot mature-based. Its basis is a quite different set of concepts, principles, policies, and techniques for managing and operating a manufacturing enterprise. All of it is easy to understand, not hand to accept (once known), eminently teachable and learnable, and not so difficult to apply.

If Just-in-Time is such 'a piece of cake' one would expect that most American companies would practice Just-in-Time. As commonly known, most American companies do not follow the philosophy of Just-in-Time. …

On Longitudinal And Transverse Shear Spring Constants At The Juncture Of Piping-Nozzle, Chihwei David Chen May 1987

On Longitudinal And Transverse Shear Spring Constants At The Juncture Of Piping-Nozzle, Chihwei David Chen

Theses

This thesis investigates the longitudinal and transverse shear spring constants at the juncture of a radial nozzle and a cylindrical shell.

Due to the difficulty of arriving an analytical solution to these constants, the " ANSYS" program has been employed to calculate them numerically. These results are reported in tabulated forms. Plots for these spring constants Kx, Kz in terms of parameters Beta ( nozzle radius / pipe radius ), Gamma ( pipe radius / shell thickness ) and shell thickness are also presented in this thesis. A numerical example is given to facilitate the design analysis.

Highway Drain Depth And Soil Stability, Mizher Al-Himdani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The presence of moisture in the soil reduces its shear strength. After the rain or snowmelt, the high percentage of moisture in the subgrade of highway, causes the instability resulting into failure of the highway due to high water table. Therefore, it is essential to install a drainage system to remove the excess moisture from the subgrade of highways to avoid its failure.

In the present study, six different soil samples have been studied to observe its failure by triaxial shear strength and corresponding moisture content was noted. The tension applied to remove moisture was converted to equivalent drain depth. …
