Approximate Methods For Analysis And Design Of Channel And Tee Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Axial Compression And Biaxial Bending, Chayan Bhattacharyya Dec 1987

Approximate Methods For Analysis And Design Of Channel And Tee Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Axial Compression And Biaxial Bending, Chayan Bhattacharyya

Theses

Combined Bending and Axial Compression for irregular shaped (such as L-shaped, Channel shaped, T-shaped) reinforced concrete short column is a common design problem. Current code provisions and the available design aids do not offer an insight into the determination of strength and ductility of biaxially loaded reinforced concrete columns. The reason is that the information on the behavior of irregular shaped reinforced concrete members under combined biaxial bending and axial load is not well known. They are usually overdesigned and this may cause the structure to be stiffer, which may result in loss ductility when applied to seismic regions. Thus …

Application Of Computer Techniques In Groundwater Contamination Studies, Komratchi Raman Dec 1987

Application Of Computer Techniques In Groundwater Contamination Studies, Komratchi Raman

Theses

A study has been undertaken to provide insight into two related aspects of groundwater contamination studies - contaminant transport behavior and its analysis by modeling techniques. The study reviews recent research that explains some of the uncertainties in the transport and fate of chemical contaminants in groundwater. Approaches to modeling techniques and data reduction are developed to illustrate their usefulness in analysing existing groundwater data, and to make predictions on the future water chemical characteristics. Three types of study areas have been chosen for this purpose, each representing a different type of groundwater contamination problem. The first study area has …

Hyperbolic Soil Parameters For Granular Soils Derived From Pressuremeter Tests For Finite Element Programs, Dieter Neumann Dec 1987

Hyperbolic Soil Parameters For Granular Soils Derived From Pressuremeter Tests For Finite Element Programs, Dieter Neumann

Dissertations and Theses

In the discipline of geotechnical Engineering the majority of finite element program users is familiar with the hyperbolic soil model. The input parameters are commonly obtained from a series of triaxial tests. For cohesionless soils however, today's sampling techniques fail to provide undisturbed soil specimen. Furthermore, routine triaxial tests can not be carried out on soils with grains exceeding 10 - 15 mm in size.

Initial developments towards a link between high quality pressuremeter tests and the hyperbolic finite parameters element input are presented. Theoretical and empirical approaches are used to determine the entire set of and from pressuremeter tests. …

Removal Of Eucalyptus Vessel Segments Using Centrifugal Cleaners, Amnuay Ponpued Dec 1987

Removal Of Eucalyptus Vessel Segments Using Centrifugal Cleaners, Amnuay Ponpued

Masters Theses

Two commercial feedforward centrifugal cleaners were used in the study of vessel segment removal from bleached eucalyptus pulp. The reduction of vessel elements yielded a reduction of vessel pick tendency and other problems caused by vessel elements which limit the use of eucalyptus pulp in paper stock furnishes. The operating conditions of the centrifugal cleaners were evaluated for their effect on separation efficiency. Pulp loss with rejects was reduced by multiple stage separation. The Vandercook Proof Press was used to compare the picking of cleaned, original pulp and two higher-vessel-content pulps. Regression analysis and ANOVA showed significant effects of feed …

A Laboratory Simulation Of A Rotary Vacuum Drum Brownstock Washer, Hugh E. Muller Dec 1987

A Laboratory Simulation Of A Rotary Vacuum Drum Brownstock Washer, Hugh E. Muller

Masters Theses

Mass balances can quantify the dilution and thickening of a liquor/fiber suspension on a brownstock washer. However, the complex displacement process necessitates an empirical approach. Given empirical data, washers can be optimized through use of efficiency factors with mass balances.

Because empirical data is difficult to obtain, a laboratory washing method was developed to empirically generate displacement efficiencies on pulp under mill washer conditions. Reproducible data generated by this method resulted in a displacement/dilution function as seen on mill washers. A laboratory simulation using mill samples, exclusive of problems for one vacuum drum, resulted in comparable efficiencies with less than …

Generalized Linear Inversion Using Tau-P Forward Modeling, Stephen Dade Walker Dec 1987

Generalized Linear Inversion Using Tau-P Forward Modeling, Stephen Dade Walker

Graduate Theses

The Generalized Linear Inversion (GLI) method is used in conjunction with a tau-p forward model to successfully perform inversions of test and real-data examples. All data examples used are one-dimensional velocity profiles that represent several different cases. The stability of the technique is demonstrated in all the test-data sets. The use of simple models and wel1-control 1ed test data results in a minimum of iterations of the inversion process. Different levels of perturbation of the model and test-data examples are used to reveal insight into the robust nature of the inversion.

A Computer Simulation Of The Rotary Drum Brownstock Washer System Using The Monte Carlo Method Of Distribution Sampling, Jacqueline K. Pease Dec 1987

A Computer Simulation Of The Rotary Drum Brownstock Washer System Using The Monte Carlo Method Of Distribution Sampling, Jacqueline K. Pease

Masters Theses

A steady-state probabilistic model is chosen to simulate the brownstock washing system's uncertainty which arises from unpredictable process fluctuations and measurement noise. Distribution sampling is used to construct multiple mass balances of a washing system. Included in this model is a linear relationship describing the correlation between dilution and displacement which allows displacement ratio to be generated based on dilution factor. This is an improvement over a similar, earlier model which considers all variables to be independent. There is no statistical difference between the mean output of the simulation and the means of data sets collected at two different mills. …

Theoretical Thermodynamic Properties Of Low Temperature Fluids, Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal Dec 1987

Theoretical Thermodynamic Properties Of Low Temperature Fluids, Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal

Masters Theses

The thermodynamic functions for low temperature fluids are computed using parametric integral equations and perturbation theory. Parametric integral equation N is applied to a low temperature Lennard-Jones gas. It is found that there is no significant improvement over the better known parametric integral equation C. The two parameter integral equation T is applied to a low temperature square-well potential and is found to be unsatisfactory at reduced temperatures of T*= 1.4 and 1.6, but quite accurate at T* = 2.2. The equation T results for T* = 2.2 are used as the reference system in perturbation theory computations. Tables of …

Separation And Characterization Of Biologically Significant Chemical Classes In Airborne Particulate Organic Matter : Measurement Of Selected Chemical Classes In Freshly Collected Air Samples, Xueying Sun

Theses

Since hazardous materials present in airborne pollutants can affect human health and environmental quality and most of the specific compounds remain uncharacterized, a study was conducted to characterize airborne particulate extractable organic matter (EOM) with respect to chemical composition. Specifically, a number of chemical classes including N-heterocycles, phenols, quinones, carboxylic acids, and especially N-nitrosamines were tested using an integrated chemical class screening system.

The inhalable particulate matter was collected, using a high volume 10 um inlet sampler, on the roof of Tiernan Hall, New Jersey Institute of Technology, which is located off Warren Street in Newark. Sequential solvent extractions yielded …

Investigation Of The Excessive Bending Stiffness Of The Four Node Plane Stress/Plane Strain Quadrilateral Finite Element, William Lee Hacker Nov 1987

Investigation Of The Excessive Bending Stiffness Of The Four Node Plane Stress/Plane Strain Quadrilateral Finite Element, William Lee Hacker

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

An eigenvalue-eigenvector approach is taken to study the details of the causes of and remedies for the overly stiff behavior exhibited by this element. The exact functional variation of the eigenpairs with element aspect ratio and material properties are derived for rectangular elements. These analytic expressions for the eigenpairs have not previously appeared in the literature. It is then shown that only the eigenvalues of the two flexure modes are decreased by the lower integration rules that are often applied, thereby causing a more flexible response. Knowing the variation in the eigenvalues with the various integrations then allows the element …

Development Of A Parametric Analysis Microcomputer Model For Evaluating The Thermodynamic Performance Of A Reciprocating Brayton Cycle Engine, Thomas Joseph White Nov 1987

Development Of A Parametric Analysis Microcomputer Model For Evaluating The Thermodynamic Performance Of A Reciprocating Brayton Cycle Engine, Thomas Joseph White

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, applicable data from research on IC engines have been adapted to PACE engine designs. Data from studies on heat transfer, friction, and pressure losses, in particular, have been used. Certain parameters which define operation and design characteristics appear to influence PACE engine performance very strongly. Some of the more critical parameters, notably friction and heat transfer coefficients, must be determined experimentally if accurate model results are to be expected. Pressure ratio, compressor RPM, and maximum combustor temperature, the independent operating parameters, also have a dramatic effect on engine performance. Other design or operating characteristics and working fluid …

Transient Analysis Of Macromolecular Blood-Tissue Exchange In Microvascular Bed, Alex Yefim Bekker Oct 1987

Transient Analysis Of Macromolecular Blood-Tissue Exchange In Microvascular Bed, Alex Yefim Bekker

Dissertations

Movement of macromolecules across microvascular walls was studied in the hamster cheek pouch with intravital fluorescence microscopy. A graded series of Fluorescein Isothiocyanate labeled Dextrans(FITC) of 20,000 -70,000 molecular weight were used as representative macromolecular tracers. The time dependent extravasation of FITC-Dextrans was video taped for approximately two and a half hours. Permeation of macromolecules from individual microvessels was quantified by digital video image processing. Histograms of the light intensity distributions for selected fields at various times have been measured and used to construct integral optical density - time profiles of the extravasated fluorochromes for particular leaky sites. An integrated …

Testing Of Ultrasonic Bonding In Microcircuits, Ioannis Andrea Phiniotis Oct 1987

Testing Of Ultrasonic Bonding In Microcircuits, Ioannis Andrea Phiniotis

Theses

A model for the ultrasonic bond as used in making microcircuit interconnections was studied. This model was based on Bowden & Tabor's dry friction theory and Mindlin's analysis of Hertz's model for elastic deformation under compressive and shear stresses. To develop a well-controlled bonding system, the critical bonding machine parameters were determined, and a high-frequency capacitor microphone was fitted to the bonding machine to monitor the tool tip oscillation. Application of these techniques made it possible to control the parameters of the machine to ±5%. Flip-chip bond studies were made using this machine. The data obtained were consistent with the …

Model Of Hot-Film Sensor With Substrate Effects, David Mcalpine Judge Oct 1987

Model Of Hot-Film Sensor With Substrate Effects, David Mcalpine Judge

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A detailed mathematical model is constructed to investigate the frequency response of a hot-film anemometer system. Since several diverse factors affect the frequency response, the analysis is broken down into three main parts. Each part is a detailed mathematical model. The first model consists of the ordinary differential equations which govern the electronics of the feedback system and heat transfer of the sensor. An important simplification in this model is that the rate of heat conduction from the sensor to its substrate is constant.

In the second model the unsteady state heat transfer properties of the substrate are examined by …

Analysis And Design Sensitivity Computations Of Nonlinear Free And Forced Vibrations Of Stepped Beams, Yong Xiang Xue Oct 1987

Analysis And Design Sensitivity Computations Of Nonlinear Free And Forced Vibrations Of Stepped Beams, Yong Xiang Xue

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A finite element method is developed in this thesis for analyzing stepped beams under nonlinear free and forced vibrations. A new assumption is made to improve an existing finite element procedure for treating beams of nonuniform cross sections. The geometric nonlinearity results from the nonlinear, strain-displacement relation due to large deflection of a beam.

Based on an improved finite element procedure a computational method is then established for design sensitivity analyses of nonlinear eigenproblems pertaining to the free and forced nonlinear vibrations of beams. It is found that the equation for computing the design sensitivity of eigenvector is linear and …

Analysis And Optimal Design Of Pyramidal Truss Core Panels, Mark A. Wiseman Oct 1987

Analysis And Optimal Design Of Pyramidal Truss Core Panels, Mark A. Wiseman

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Pyramidal Truss Core Panel has been developed to save weight in applications normally devoted to solid plates. Present design formulas use classical beam theory with engineering assumptions made for moment of inertia and shear modulus determinations. Analysis with the SUPERSAP finite element code indicates that the present theory provides good prediction for the plate stresses but may be inadequate for the core stress and deflection determination. Two optimization routines are presented. The first procedure uses a batch file to execute separate programs with SUPERSAP used as the analysis code. The second combines a FORTRAN program used for analysis with …

A Study Of Flow Separation In Transonic Flow Using Inviscid And Viscous Cfd Schemes, James Andrew Rhodes

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A comparison of flow separation in transonic flows is made using various computational schemes which solve the Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics. The flows examined are computed using several simple two-dimensional configurations including a backward facing step and a bump in a channel. Comparison of the results obtained using shock fitting and flux vector splitting methods are presented and the results obtained using the Euler codes are compared to results on the same configurations using a code which solves the Navier-Stokes equations.

An Application Of Global Optimization Algorithm For Modal Parameter Identification, Chung-Men Chen Oct 1987

An Application Of Global Optimization Algorithm For Modal Parameter Identification, Chung-Men Chen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Single-mode projection filters for modal parameter identification for flexible structures are introduced. An effective two-dimensional global optimization method using interval analysis is combined with the projection filters to facilitate identification for modal frequency and damping. A numerical simulation of a ten-mode structure is presented to illustrate the feasibility of the new method. The projection filters are practical for parallel processing implementation.

A Theoretical Investigation Of The Possibility Of Coexistence Of Three Microbial Populations Competing Purely And Simply In Configurations Of Three Interconnected Chemostats, Shiuan-Wu Chang Sep 1987

A Theoretical Investigation Of The Possibility Of Coexistence Of Three Microbial Populations Competing Purely And Simply In Configurations Of Three Interconnected Chemostats, Shiuan-Wu Chang

Theses

It is known from the literature that out of any number of microbial populations competing purely and simply in an environment which is homogeneous and has time invariant inputs (e.g. in an ideal chemostat) only one population can survive in a steady state under any conditions. However it has been proven possible for two competitors to coexist in two interconnected chemostats, which indicates that spatial heterogeneities may lead to coexistence of pure and simple competitors. The present study investigates whether the spatial heterogeneities created by three interconnected bioreactors may lead to a mixed culture (i.e. coexistence) of three pure and …

Approaches To The Synthesis Of Dentin Bonding Agents Containing Vinyl And Carbamate Functional Groups, Steven W. Amato Sep 1987

Approaches To The Synthesis Of Dentin Bonding Agents Containing Vinyl And Carbamate Functional Groups, Steven W. Amato

Theses

The synthesis of four new monomers containing vinyl and carbamate functional groups was attempted. The desired products were N-m-methacryloxyphenyl-O-phenyl carbamate, N-p-methacryloxy-O-phenyl carbamate, m-N-phenylcarbamato-2-methacryloxyethoxy benzoate, and p-N-phenylcarbamato-2-methacryloxyethoxy benzoate. The carbamate functional group was derived by the Lewis Acid catalyzed reaction of meta-aminophenol, para-aminophenol, meta-aminobenzoic acid, and para-aminobenzoic acid with diphenyl carbonate. The vinyl function was derived, in the case of the aminophenols, by reaction with methacrylyl chloride, and in the case of the aminobenzoic acids, with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate.

Partial products only were prepared, these being the two carbamate functional phenols, the two carbamate functional benzoic acids, the two methacryloxy functional derivatives …

Degradation Of Aniline And Nitrobenzene In A Photoreactor, Michael Joseph Sowa

Theses

Degradation of aniline and nitrobenzene in aqueuous solutions was studied. Five reaction processes were utilized, including ultraviolet light, ozone, O2/UV, O3/O2/UV, and H2O2/UV. A 30 liter semi-batch gas sparged reactor was used for the development of reaction rate and mass transfer parameters in these systems. The results were used to model a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) for the O3/O2/UV case. Reasonable agreement was obtained for steady state exit concentrations between the experimental data and those predicted from the model.
