An Application Of Neural Networks In Data Communication Real-Time Resource Reallocation, Qing Fan Jul 1992

An Application Of Neural Networks In Data Communication Real-Time Resource Reallocation, Qing Fan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents an application of artificial neural networks in real-time resource reallocation, a methodology used in the implementation of an intelligent interface node in the Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) environment. In particular, the problem is formulated using a Hopfield neural network model. The real-time reallocation problem is mapped into a two-dimensional matrix of neurons similar to Hopfield and Tank's approach to the traveling salesman problem (TSP) . An energy function is formulated in terms of the hard constraints and the solution cost. The interconnection weights and the input biases are determined by the energy function. It is shown through …

Laminar And Turbulent Natural Convection Heat Transfer In Trombe Wall Channels, Tony D. T. Chen Jul 1992

Laminar And Turbulent Natural Convection Heat Transfer In Trombe Wall Channels, Tony D. T. Chen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The natural convective heat transfer and air movement in a Trombe wall solar passive system has been studied analytically and numerically. Three Trombe wall channel geometries including the parallel channel with axial inlet and exit, parallel channel with side vents and Trombe wall channel coupled to the room have been considered. Several models representing these Trombe wall geometries have been formulated. For the parallel channel with axial inlet and exit geometry, a momentum-integral method has been used to solve parabolic governing equations for two-dimensional laminar flow. This formulation leads to a second order ordinary differential equation for pressure defect in …

Runge-Kutta Upwind Multigrid Multi-Block Three-Dimensional Thin Layer Navier-Stokes Solver, Frank E. Cannizzaro Jul 1992

Runge-Kutta Upwind Multigrid Multi-Block Three-Dimensional Thin Layer Navier-Stokes Solver, Frank E. Cannizzaro

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A state-of-the-art computer code has been developed that incorporates a modified Runge-Kutta time integration scheme, Upwind numerical techniques, Multigrid acceleration, and Multi-block capabilities (RUMM). A three-dimensional thin-layer formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations is employed. For turbulent flow cases, the Baldwin-Lomax algebraic turbulence model is used. Two different upwind techniques are available, van Leer's flux-vector splitting and Roe's flux-difference splitting. Full approximation multigrid plus implicit residual and corrector smoothing were implemented to enhance the rate of convergence. Multi-block capabilities were developed to provide geometric flexibility. This feature allows the developed computer code to accommodate any grid topology or grid configuration with …

Text-Independent Automatic Speaker Identification Using Partitioned Neural Networks, Laszlo Rudasi Jul 1992

Text-Independent Automatic Speaker Identification Using Partitioned Neural Networks, Laszlo Rudasi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation introduces a binary partitioned approach to statistical pattern classification which is applied to talker identification using neural networks. In recent years artificial neural networks have been shown to work exceptionally well for small but difficult pattern classification tasks. However, their application to large tasks (i.e., having more than ten to 20 categories) is limited by a dramatic increase in required training time. The time required to train a single network to perform N-way classification is nearly proportional to the exponential of N. In contrast, the binary partitioned approach requires training times on the order of N2. …

Dynamics And Control Of A Five Degree-Of-Freedom Magnetic Suspension System, Anwar Mohammed Haj Jul 1992

Dynamics And Control Of A Five Degree-Of-Freedom Magnetic Suspension System, Anwar Mohammed Haj

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A large-gap magnetic suspension system with five degrees-of-freedom is presented. The system is multi-input multi-output with coupling between degrees-of-freedom. Simulation was performed on this multi degree-of-freedom system in order to control each degree-of-freedom separately. Two types of controllers are considered by adding white noise to a single degree-of-freedom system in order to test their behavior and determine which is the best choice for the system. The responses of the system are produced in continuous and discrete time where a sample interval and delay time was introduced. Using these responses, a comparison between each degree-of-freedom was made and the maximum value …

Dissertations and Theses

In an attempt to achieve more efficient designs, the technological frontier is pushed further and further. Every year science probes for a better understanding of natural phenomena, discovering new and improved methods to perform the same task more efficiently and with better results. One of the new technologies is the nonlinear analysis of structural systems using inelastic post-buckling member performance. Inelastic post-buckling member performance is defined as the constitutive relationship between axial load and displacement after the ultimate member capacity has been exceeded. A nonlinear analysis is able to predict the failure behavior of a structural system under ultimate loads …

The methodology comprised of recently developed techniques in which water holding, immobilization solids and binder migration could all be measured for similar coatings applied on a paper-like porous substrate. The results illustrated that watersoluble polymers affect both the water-loss rate and binder migration, but reduce the …

A Modal Analysis And Modelling Of A Lightly Damped Large Space Structure, Scott E. George Jun 1992

A Modal Analysis And Modelling Of A Lightly Damped Large Space Structure, Scott E. George

Theses and Dissertations

This study involves the modification to the PACOSS Dynamic Test Article to create a lightly damped representative large space structure with closely spaced, low frequency modes. An experimental modal analysis is performed to recharacterize the low frequency flexible vibration modes. A finite element model is created using MSC/NASTRAN to predict low frequency behavior using both real eigenvalue analysis and frequency response analysis. Then a reduced order model is created and fine-tuned to represent the dynamics of the structure for the identified low frequency modes.

The photo-initiated oxidation process, using hydrogen peroxide or ozone under ultraviolet radiation, has been proven to be an effective treatment method for toxic organic pollutants in wastewater. Most of the recent kinetic studies of the process were concentrated on the breakdown mechanisms of the pollutant itself. The formation and the destruction of intermediates were seldom investigated. Also the mechanisms and their reaction rate constants of free radical formation and destruction in the O3/UV or H2O2/UV reactor were seldom studied.

The objective of this research is to study the kinetics of photo-initiated oxidation of toxic …

Performance Evaluation Of Spread Spectrum System With Cochannel Interference Through A Nonlinear Channel, Yong H. Kim May 1992

Performance Evaluation Of Spread Spectrum System With Cochannel Interference Through A Nonlinear Channel, Yong H. Kim

Dissertations

This thesis deals with the problem of more than one subscriber transmitting data signals through a common satellite repeater using code division multiplexing to separate the signals. We are concerned with the problem of amplifying two DS spread spectrum signals, both QPSK or BPSK modulated, in a common device in which limiting occurs. One signal is considered the signal we desire to receive, and the other, having the same nominal carrier frequency with a small random offset, is considered to be a cochannel interferer. The case of a cochannel interferer on the uplink and downlink in QPSK signalling and BPSK …

A Modified Approach To Flood Prediction In Urban Watersheds, Joseph Ofungwu May 1992

A Modified Approach To Flood Prediction In Urban Watersheds, Joseph Ofungwu

Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a better method for dealing with the problems of flood prediction in Urban Watersheds. It has long been realized that urbanization activity such as increased imperviousness, drainage improvements, etc. increases runoff volumes. Therefore, traditional flood prediction methods using the Log Pearson III distribution underestimate flood frequencies when applied to urban watersheds without modification.

In attempt to compensate for the effects of urbanization on streamflow, previous workers usually employed regional analysis techniques involving a number of different watersheds at various degrees of urbanization. Results obtained by this approach leave room for improvement primarily …

Analysis Of Electric Field On Surface Of An Atomically Sharp Field Emitter, Ziyan Cheng May 1992

Analysis Of Electric Field On Surface Of An Atomically Sharp Field Emitter, Ziyan Cheng

Theses

In this thesis, exact calculation and computer simulation of an atomically sharp emitter are presented. In the theoretical analysis, the cathode-anode or cathode-gate complex is modeled for cone- and wedge-shaped emitters so that exact solution can be obtained. The exact solution reveals that the field on the emitter surface depends not only on the sharpness of the emitter, but also on the global geometry of the field emitter, gate, and anode complex. This finding is contrary to a widely accepted concept that field is predominantly determined only by local curvature of the tip.

The theoretical results are confirmed by computer …

Improvement Of Light Collection Efficiency By Laser-Induced Patterning The Surface Of Schottky-Barrier Solar Cells, Kejia Fang May 1992

Improvement Of Light Collection Efficiency By Laser-Induced Patterning The Surface Of Schottky-Barrier Solar Cells, Kejia Fang

Theses

In order to achieve maximum light collection efficiency in silicon made solar cells, reflectivity of the silicon surface must be reduced to as low level as possible. In the past, researchers have concentrated on coating the Si surfaces with anti-reflection coatings. Another approach was to form textures on the Si wafers to capture further the light impinging on the solar cells.

Theoretical studies, which were based on ray tracing approach, revealed that some geometrical patterns are better capturing the light than others. In this work, different geometrical surface configurations on a Cu/n-Si Schottky-barrier solar cell have been investigated. The configurations …
