Barriers And Drivers To Bus Electrification: The Transit Agency's Perspective, Aleks C. Paskett

Battery-electric buses (BEBs) have become increasingly common in recent years, as transit agencies around the world seek to reduce their carbon emissions. Although many agencies and governments have set ambitious climate goals pushing for increased adoption of BEBs, some agencies face difficulty transitioning their fleets to this technology. This study seeks to understand the challenges faced by these agencies, as well as their motivations for adopting BEBs. Researchers conducted a series of interviewers with twelve transit leaders representing ten transit agencies who were leading BEB adoption programs, asking questions about their experiences trying to implement this technology. Analysis Of An Outdoor Pilot-Scale Rotating Algae Biofilm Reactor For Power Optimization, Ash-Enhanced Productivity, And Nutrient Uptake, Peter F. Jeppesen

Outdoor testing of a rotating algae biofilm reactor (RABR) was performed to see how well it could remove nutrients from water and produce algae. By adjusting the operation settings, we found the lowest power needed to remove nitrogen and phosphorus. The lowest power values needed were 1.36 kWh per kilogram of nitrogen and 20.1 kWh per kilogram of phosphorus. The algae production rate reached a maximum of 7.09 grams per square meter per day. Detailed analysis showed that the reactor worked like a continuous flow system, and the performance was influenced by factors including light and temperature. The results also …

Aquaculture farms, like oyster farms, often use outdated techniques to measure the quality of their waters. These techniques are often stationary or are deployed by an operator who may struggle to reach a location depending on conditions like the presence of a storm or low tide. This creates data sets with gaps over time and across the area of the farm, meaning the data cannot be used to model the standard farm conditions. This thesis presents an improved vortex wake model for unstructured, supersonic panel methods. Panel methods are numerical methods that utilize inviscid flow assumptions and other simplifications to allow efficient computation of pressure distributions, velocity fields, and aerodynamic forces. They are commonly used for preliminary design, automatic design codes, and automatic optimization routines. Most existing supersonic panel methods do not include automatic wake generation and relaxation. This prevents the accurate analysis of many geometries, including those with conventional horizontal stabilizers or canards. This study explored how canopy biomass and shadows affect evapotranspiration (ET) estimates, a crucial factor for irrigation management in almond orchards in California’s Central Valley. Data from 24 drone flights over three almond plots in 2021 and 2022 were analyzed using the Two-Source Energy Balance (TSEB) model, combined with meteorological data from EC-towers. The study found that filtering out shadows improved ET estimation, particularly in young orchards, and identified the importance of using new Leaf Area Index (LAI) models for better accuracy. However, expanding drone networks also presents significant security challenges concerning secure communication and authentication. This paper introduces a robust privacy-preserving key-based authentication scheme tailored explicitly for the IoD, utilizing a matrix key generated by Hierarchical Message Authentication Codes (HMAC) and the SHA-256 algorithm to address these vulnerabilities. Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are widespread nutritional issues, affecting millions globally. Conventional iron supplements often suffer from low absorption rates and gastrointestinal side effects. We investigated β-glucan derivatives as potential carriers to enhance iron absorption and mitigate these drawbacks. This study explored a novel β-glucan-based carrier system loaded with ferrous sulfate heptahydrate. In-vitro studies demonstrated sustained iron stability for over six hours in simulated gastric fluids due to the carrier's affinity for stomach mucin. The demand for hydrogen is growing which makes the development of clean and efficient H2 synthesis technologies imperative. Microwave-assisted, thermocatalytic, dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons has demonstrated the ability to generate H2 with high yield/selectivity and leaving behind valuable solid carbon byproducts. However, this microwave-assisted process is unoptimized which prevents it from being utilized in industry. This thesis evaluates the effectiveness of the Network Link Outlier Factor with Most Likely Link (NLOF: MLL) algorithm under varying network load conditions. Repeated simulation experiments using Mininet were conducted for four different network-wide load levels: 100 Mbps, 500 Mbps, 1 Gbps, and 5 Gbps. Using statistical inference, our experimental results indicate that NLOF: MLL is ineffective under light load conditions (i.e., 100Mbps load) due to the limited network flow data available for its learning process. Two-dimensional metal organic frameworks (2D MOFs) with honeycomb-like porous sheets are of growing interest for applications in electrochemical energy storage and electrocatalysis. Notably, 2D MOFs that host their porous sheets in eclipsed or slipped-parallel stacking modes possess continuous one-dimensional pores (1D) and have been widely studied. In contrast, related 2D MOFs with a staggered stacking mode have reduced porosity, are relatively rare, and are largely unexplored for applications. Continuous overactivation of myofibroblasts leads to excessive deposition of profibrotic proteins, which in turn causes tissue stiffness and, ultimately, organ failure. One of those proteins, Cadherin-11 (CDH11), is reported to be overexpressed in the tissue of fibrotic skin, specifically on myofibroblasts. Similarly, chronic inflammation drives fibrosis progression in autoimmune-related illnesses like systemic sclerosis (SSc). Therefore, it is hypothesized that CDH11 could be a target for cell-specific delivery of antifibrotic therapies to fibrotic skin tissue. The aim of this work was to create polymer and ceramic materials for integration into energy applications. The first part of this research was to fabricate polymer syntactic foams that exhibited high energy absorption capabilities. The fabrication of polymer syntactic foams was feasible through synthesizing hollow polysiloxane microspheres that were imbedded into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. This research aimed to advance the 3D printing of ultra-high-temperature ceramic matrix composites (UHTCMCs) and develop a custom Direct Ink Writing (DIW) system with multimaterial and in-line mixing capabilities. The study first focused on creating ZrB₂–SiC composites reinforced with aligned silicon carbide fibers (SiCf) using paste extrusion. By formulating suspensions with a preceramic polymer (SMP-10), ZrB₂, and SiCf, the study assessed how fiber alignment influenced key properties such as thermal and electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. In this study, we have performed two-dimensional steady-state hypersonic CFD and one-and-two-dimensional steady-state heat conduction numerical simulations. We are using them to guide and study hypersonic boundary-layer transition ground testing physical experiments to be performed at Holloman High-Speed Test Track. We use surface heat transfer and fluid flow spot signatures to identify fluid flow regimes using laminar and turbulent numerical simulation solvers to understand boundary-layer transition thermocouple temperatures and fluid flow-forming structures. High-pressure gasification is gaining attention as an emerging solution for sustainable energy production due to its potential to achieve higher efficiencies, improved syngas quality and smaller equipment footprints. High operating pressures and temperatures can increase the synergistic reactivity of biomass and organic materials, consequently enabling higher in situ tar reformation and ultimately reducing the number of gas treatment requirements. Today’s world of electronics is dominated by semiconductor devices which utilize silicon as their substrate material. Though, silicon is not ideal for semiconductor devices in high-voltage or high-temperature applications. Additionally, the efficiency of silicon devices becomes drastically reduced in nonideal operating conditions.
