Additive manufacturing processes allow the development of custom-shape rechargeable batteries, but research in custom filaments for fused deposition modeling (FDM) of battery separators has remained limited until now. This study discusses the development and optimization of a composite thermoplastic filament feedstock to 3D print separator membranes. A number of post-processing steps - leveraging the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) of the composite filament - are introduced in tandem with FDM to promote microporosity formation through the removal of the sacrificial diluent phase within 3D printed samples. Abstract This chapter investigates the use of direct ink write (DIW) additive manufacturing to control grain orientation in non-toxic barium titanate (BTO) ceramics by blending spherical and platelet-shaped particles in the ink. A series of inks containing 0–40 wt.% BTO platelets were formulated with poly(vinyl alcohol), polyethylene glycol, poly(acrylic acid-co-maleic acid), and ammonium hydroxide to ensure printability and homogeneous dispersion. Cylindrical specimens (20 mm × 3 mm) were printed using a Hyrel 30M DIW system and subjected to de-binding (650 °C, 2 h) followed by a two-step sintering schedule (T₁: 1200–1350 °C; T₂: 700–850 °C; 24 h dwell). …

Additive Manufacturing (AM) holds significant potential for space exploration by enabling on-demand fabrication of components, reducing payload costs, and enhancing mission adaptability. However, microgravity introduces challenges in thermal regulation, material deposition, and structural integrity. This research explores the feasibility of submerged AM using neutral buoyancy in silicone oil to simulate microgravity conditions on Earth. A 3D printer was modified for submerged operation, with samples printed under three conditions: no oil (ambient air), submerged in oil, and simulated microgravity at varying temperatures. This project aimed to develop a tissue-on-a-chip platform for studying Parkinson's Disease (PD) using dopaminergic (DA) neurons. PD is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive loss of DA neurons, leading to involuntary movements and other symptoms. Early diagnosis and deeper understanding of PD pathogenesis are crucial for improving disease management and patient outcomes. To model PD in vitro, this research utilized human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived neural progenitor cells (NPCs) cultured on electrospun (ES) polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds. In-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing (ISAM) operations increasingly rely on digital twin technology to perform predictive structural analysis in resource-constrained environments. A key challenge in deploying structural finite element analysis (FEA) within a digital twin lies in determining mesh fidelity settings that balance simulation accuracy with computational efficiency. This thesis presents the development of a MATLAB-based adaptive mesh refinement framework designed to identify optimal FEA mesh parameters prior to integration into a digital twin system.

The purpose of this thesis is to further explore the capabilities of magnesium metal to serve in biodegradable orthopedic implant applications. Current standards for orthopedic implants involve metals that cause many issues such as high risk of infection due to the need for secondary surgery. Despite magnesium’s biocompatibility, it presents a challenge that will be addressed in this thesis: a fast degradation rate. Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) airplanes provide a great degree of flexibility in mission type, as they combine the landing ability of a helicopter with the range of an airplane. This paper describes the design, implementation, and testing of the control system for just such a vehicle. Due to its non-typical motor configuration, there is an unbalanced torque on the frame. Two control methods are suggested and tested to balance this torque, and a PID controller with a high I gain is selected. This report aims to lay out our design process for the missile interceptor aircraft. Our Talon Interceptor is an inexpensive, scaled-down, autonomous F-16 for mass production. The aircraft can ascend quickly for mission requirements while avoiding detection with its internal weapons bay. Multiple decisions have been made to ensure the initial and maintenance costs are reasonable without compromising the missions. TOPSIS reviews have been used to measure significant components unbiasedly and objectively. Our aircraft meets all the AIAA requirements while coming in under budget.

Patient mortality increases over 14% and the prognosis for a full-recovery decreases an additional 21% when definitive medical care is provided after the first hour of suffering traumatic injuries. The Ebbinghaus illusion, also know as Titchner Circles, is a perceptual illusion that is typically presented as a two-dimensional set of disks. These disks are configured as a central disk surrounded by an annulus of smaller or larger disks. This study explores the effectiveness of pad printing and near-infrared (NIR) sintering for producing conductive silver microparticle traces. A new pad printer was set up, and silver inks with varying concentrations of silver particles (17.5 %v/v, 20 %v/v, and 25 %v/v) were manufactured, printed, and sintered. The study identified sintering time and silver concentration as the most influential parameters affecting resistivity, with the best result of 8.73 × 10⁻⁷ Ω·m achieved using 25 %v/v ink sintered for 3 seconds at full power. Reinforced concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world with many bridges and other major infrastructure consisting of such structural elements. A primary concern impacting the durability of concrete is chloride penetration in aggressive environments such as marine or coastal areas. In such environments, chloride ions can penetrate into the pores of concrete leading to the corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement which compromises the structural integrity of concrete. Designing spacecraft mission trajectories is a complex, tedious, and stringent process that requires a strong background in astrodynamics and programming due to the complex dynamical environment of space. The current 2D visualization methods for displaying these geometrically abstract trajectories make it difficult to understand the true nature of more complex orbits.
