Comparison Between Dynamic Responses Of Hollow And Solid Piles For Offshore Wind Turbine Foundations, M. Bayat, Lars Vabbersgaard Andersen, Lars Bo Ibsen
Comparison Between Dynamic Responses Of Hollow And Solid Piles For Offshore Wind Turbine Foundations, M. Bayat, Lars Vabbersgaard Andersen, Lars Bo Ibsen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The offshore wind energy industry is turning out ever larger numbers of offshore wind turbines every year. One way to achieve a cost-effective design is to have a better understanding of the dynamic response of offshore structures. That is why it is getting more and more important to understand the dynamic behavior of soil and interaction between soil and piles. To avert damage to offshore foundation, it becomes necessary to identify and quantify the soil-structure interaction and the related damping effects on the system. In this study, a single pile is investigated by means of boundary integral equations. The pile …
Design And Performance Of Shallow Foundations Over Diagenetic Limestone Along The Arab Gulf Coast: Realities And Challenges, Waddah Akili
Design And Performance Of Shallow Foundations Over Diagenetic Limestone Along The Arab Gulf Coast: Realities And Challenges, Waddah Akili
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The near surface, highly weathered limestones of the southern shores of the Arab Gulf region have complex lithologies attributable to post depositional changes that have altered hard rocks into soils and some carbonate soils into a rock matrix. The matrix, often clayey, sometimes cemented (with gypsum, anhydrite, and /or calcite grains) is not a rock nor could be considered as a soil per se. These deposits are: difficult to sample in the undisturbed state, extremely variable in composition and properties, and are susceptible to degradation, particularly when wet. The paper presents typical geotechnical information from selected sites where these deposits …

Differential Settlements Of Cylindrical Steel Storage Tanks: Case Of The Marine Terminal Of Bejaia, Bahar Ramdane, Sadaoui Omar, Amzal Djahid
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The marine terminal of Bejaia is a zone of storage of hydrocarbon liquids. It consists of sixteen cylindrical floating roof steel tanks founded on a reconstituted and compacted granular fill. At the end of 1980s, after about 25 years of satisfactory service, the tanks were subjected to settlements, ovalization and tilting. Because of a distortion of the steel tank walls and jamming of the floating roof, a shear failure was evident and some tanks were considered unsafe for service. A comprehensive geotechnical investigation was conducted to evaluate the subsurface conditions of the site and to provide recommendations for foundation repair …

Geotechnical Site Assessment By Seismic Piezocone Test In North Of Denmark, Sarah Firouzianbandpey, Benjaminn Nordahl Nielsenl, Lars Vabbersgaard Andersen, Lars Bo Ibsen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
These days cone penetration tests (CPT) have gained more popularity as an alternative to the conventional laboratory tests for subsurface investigation and estimation of soil parameters. Due to increasing interest in soil dynamics in the last decades, there is a development of CPT as a seismic piezocone penetration test (SCPTU) which provides shear wave velocity measurements simultaneously with measurements of tip resistance (qc), sleeve friction (fs) and pore pressure (u). The results can be used for determination of deformation parameters of soil. In this regard there have been proposed different empirical correlations between cone data and …

Renovations of the MBTA Copley Station in Boston included construction of a new elevator shaft to improve disabled access to the existing Green Line station. The site is immediately adjacent to the Eastern façade of the historic Old South Church. The construction work required excavation support including a perimeter secant pile wall and a jet-grouted base plug. Significant ground and structural movements were observed during jet grouting, mainly associated with soil displacements during grout injection. A three dimensional numerical model was developed, using the Plaxis 3D Foundation™ program, in order to test the hypothesis that the observed movements of the …

High Capacity Rock Socketed Piles In Scotland, Uk, Peter Boyd, Baran Ozsoy
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The New Victoria Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland provides a 30,000m² ‘Ambulatory Care and Diagnostic’ (ACAD) facility. The ground conditions beneath the site comprise a variable thickness of Made Ground overlying Glaciomarine Deposits and Glacial Till which in turn rests on the Carboniferous bedrock. However the solid geology is complex and interrupted by a number of faults. The Carboniferous rocks under the site include a number of coal seams, although it is thought that none of these seams has been worked at this location. Due to the relatively low strength of the glacial soils, it was necessary to support the building …

Performance Of Driven Piles In Gravelly Sands With Cobbles, William S. Man, Yonah R. Halpern
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Steel piles are known for their high resistance to driving and handling, as well as their large lateral stiffness. Difficulty of driving depends on the subsurface conditions, pile type, and type of impact hammer used to drive piles. This case history presents observations of pile construction for a bridge widening retrofit in the city of Irwindale. The proposed foundations consisted of twenty seven 14-inch-diameter Caltrans Standard Plan B2-5 Alternative V closed-end pipe piles with quarter-inch thick steel sections. Piles were 35 feet in length and were designed to be driven piles. Subsurface investigations indicated the soils consisted of silty gravels …

Punch-Through Foundation Failure Of Oil Drilling Platform In The Deltaic Plain Of The Niger River, E. A. J. George, T. J. Atuboyedia, M. Oju, T. E. George
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The deltaic plains of the Niger River are composed mostly of Pleistocene sediments. On the occurrence of low stands of the sea level due to eustatic changes, the sediments were exposed to temperature fluctuations during the Quaternary period, leading to strata sequence generated in these plains that allowed strong layers of soil to overlie weaker layers of the same age. Most of the onshore explorations for oil and gas in Nigeria take place within these plains of the Niger. A well was to be drilled in search of oil and gas in allocation within these plains. As often done, a …

Soil Movements Due To Displacement Pile Driving, M. K. Chong
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The effects of displacement piling are well documented with many cases of movements caused to adjacent structures and detrimental effects on recently installed piles. The author’s experience with dealing with ground displacements of raft piling in deep marine clays in Singapore led to the development of a method for calculating the ground movements to assess the cumulative effects of pile driving. The method is derived from soil mechanics parameters, principle of potential energy, strain energy and work done by the stresses in the soil undergoing a cylindrical cavity expansion process and the stresses in the soil undergoing large strains direct …
The Effect Of Quality Of Subsoil Structure Identification On The Execution Of Pile Structures For Bridge Supports, Maciej Kumor, Zbigniew Młynarek
The Effect Of Quality Of Subsoil Structure Identification On The Execution Of Pile Structures For Bridge Supports, Maciej Kumor, Zbigniew Młynarek
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Supports of road viaducts or bridges are founded predominantly on piles. This is determined by the subsoil structure and the location of the designed object. In certain cases the selection of the pile system is also influenced by the neighboring buildings and infrastructure. The design for bridge foundation in such cases needs to be based on high quality geotechnical documentation. Although this criterion is specified in Eurocode 7: PN-EN 1997 parts 1 and 2, binding throughout Europe, including Poland, frequently geotechnical documentations are not very precise and do not present an accurate subsoil structure, leading to building disasters. Such a …

Damage On A Main Gas Pipeline Due To Landslide Of Soils Derived From Volcanic Ashes In Colombia, Gilberto Ch. Rodriguez, Julián V. Rodriguez, Natalia A. Quintero, Jorge E. Villamarín
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In December 2011 a great proportion slope failed affecting the main gas pipeline (20” diameter) that supplies Colombia’s southwest area. The landslide involved materials formed by soils derived from volcanic ashes and residual soils, typical in Colombia’s central zone, which acquired great energy flowing in an avalanche through the natural watercourse. The avalanche generated soil erosion over the torrent banks, generating the watercourse deepening and the deterioration of adjacent slopes over which the pipeline runs. There were identified as landslides triggering aspects the atypical raining period due to “La Niña” climatic phenomenon and the soils removal at the slope base …

The physical research should prove the behavior of ideally non-cohesive granular mass during three basic types of structure/wall movement towards in active and passive directions. The first research period in 1998-2000 was aimed on active pressure, and in 2001-2002 on the first long-term experiment with passive pressure (E3/0.2). Then new experimental equipment was developed between 2003 and 2009 on a contemporary advanced level. The first long-term experiment with passive pressure E3/0,2 …
Earth Dam Failure By Erosion, A Case History, Scott Newhouse
Earth Dam Failure By Erosion, A Case History, Scott Newhouse
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In January 1998, the Archusa Creek Dam in southeast Mississippi failed by breaching through its emergency spillway. At the time of its failure, the dam had a concrete ogee weir for a principal spillway and a vegetated earth emergency spillway. Fortunately, the dam is a low hazard structure, as there is little development downstream, and consequences of failure were mostly limited to the loss of a state-owned, recreational water park. The dam failed as a result of a 5-year storm event, triggered by intense rainfall of nearly 4.25 in. in just a few hours. Runoff generated by the storm caused …
