An Example Of Teaching Slope Stability From True Case Histories, Diego Lo Presti
An Example Of Teaching Slope Stability From True Case Histories, Diego Lo Presti
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The use of case histories in classroom mainly involves an inductive teaching approach. This paper discusses the intrinsic advantages and possible drawbacks of such an inductive approach. More specifically, the paper illustrates an example of teaching the class of “slope stability” based on such methodology. The class takes place at the University of Pisa in the second tier degree of Civil Engineering of Infrastructures. The inductive teaching approach is very popular in the British/American Higher Education system. On the contrary it is not so popular in Latin countries like Italy. In order to make more clear the comprehension of this …
Application Of Observational Method In The Successful Construction Of Underground Structures, Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) Project, Gujarat, India, Indra Prakash
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) underground powerhouse is located in Deccan Basalt flows in the lower Narmada valley in Gujarat state. These flows are intruded by dolerite dykes and sill. Basalt flows and dolerite rocks are considered good tunneling media for locating underground structures. Therefore, initial designing of supports was done considering good rock mass conditions. However, during construction numerous geotechnical problems were encountered necessitating review of support system. Rock falls and collapses were observed in tunnel sections passing through dolerite dykes and sills. Cracks were observed in the walls of the powerhouse cavern. During progressive excavations back analysis was done …

Behaviour Of A Large Anchored Basement In Dense Sands And Gravels, Francesco Petrella, Roberto Persio, Silvia Ferrero, Tim Hocombe
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Prior to the excavation of half a million cubic meters of dense gravelly material within the city centre of Milan, a 24 to 27m long diaphragm wall was built to provide a 17m retained height to a four-level basement. Temporary support was offered by two to four rows of ground anchors with the exception of a portion adjacent to an existing multi-level cark park where a post-tensioned capping beam was installed to protect the car park and prevent it from being subject to sway. Other design challenges were posed by the proximity of a buried channel and of an urban …

Calibration Of Numerical Model For Liquefaction-Induced Effects On Levees And Embankments, Michelle Shriro, Jonathan D. Bray
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Soil liquefaction presents a significant hazard to the built environment. The seismically induced permanent displacement of earth levees, dams, and embankments resulting from liquefaction below these earth structures is not well captured in current seismic design practice. The objective of this study is to advance the capabilities of numerical methods toward the solution of problems involving limited lateral spreads. The nonlinear soil constitutive model UBCSAND, as implemented in the finite difference program FLAC, (Itasca), is used to evaluate the seismic deformations of the newly-constructed Moss Landing Marine Laboratory (MLML) in Moss Landing, California resulting from liquefaction-induced lateral movements during the …
Case Histories In Geotechnical Engineering Education, James Mahar
Case Histories In Geotechnical Engineering Education, James Mahar
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Case histories can be taught as an individual course or as part of a specific engineering class. These studies are very important when the teaching methodology incorporates the observational approach in design and construction. Several resources for case histories are available. However the most insightful are those in which the instructor has personal knowledge or the student participates in a case history-type project. One of the most important elements in engineering education is the sequential design approach in civil works projects. Case histories provide a very effective means of illustrating the complete design process which is the framework of professional …
Case History — Performance Monitoring Success, Charles B. Grant, Tom Hurley
Case History — Performance Monitoring Success, Charles B. Grant, Tom Hurley
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The City Creek Center urban redevelopment project in Salt Lake City, Utah involved excavations up to 65 feet deep. Shoring systems included more than 29,000 square feet of anchored diaphragm walls, 100,000 square feet of soil nail walls, and 860 linear feet of underpinning. Detailed performance monitoring alerted the project team to unacceptable performance of an anchored diaphragm wall adjacent to an occupied twenty-five-story building on shallow foundations. This knowledge allowed the team to react quickly, stabilize the excavation, investigate the situation, and develop successful remedial measures. The diaphragm wall was reinforced with additional anchors and subgrade concrete struts, allowing …

The case narrative is accompanied by annotated calculations, which follow the general design philosophy of the project. The case focuses on two of the main issues for the geotechnical design of the highway embankments close to the Limerick …
Composite Shallow & Deep Foundation In Karst Geology For The Countryside Christian Center New Sanctuary Clearwater, Florida, Said Iravani
Composite Shallow & Deep Foundation In Karst Geology For The Countryside Christian Center New Sanctuary Clearwater, Florida, Said Iravani
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Evaluation, design, construction, and monitoring of foundations in karst geology are challenging tasks. The random presence of karst features, the variation in size, extent, and depth of karst features, and the different origin and geological characteristics of karst features make site characterization and investigation difficult. A balance between non-intrusive filed tests is useful to improve the site characterization. Non-intrusive field tests which provide multi-dimensional mapping such as Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) or Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can provide spatial coverage instead of point data. Non-intrusive field tests which are not sensitive to moisture such as shear wave velocity measurements can …

Importance Of Observational Method In View Of Numerical Analyses For Retaning Structures In Soft Soils, Patrick Becker
Importance Of Observational Method In View Of Numerical Analyses For Retaning Structures In Soft Soils, Patrick Becker
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The soil-structure-interaction of retaining structures is complex and dependent on many factors. In particular excavations in soft soils and urban environments with adjacent buildings are always subjected to deformations which are not fully avoidable. Therefore, numerical analyses can be a powerful tool for predicting the stress path and time dependent deformation behavior of retaining structures in soft soils. But the quality of these numerical predictions is directly related to the used constitutive soil models, the estimation of their material parameters and a realistic simulation of the soil-structure-interaction. The fact that Class-A predictions of the deformation behavior of retaining structures in …
Insurance Industry Perspective On The Importance Of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering For Commercial Structures, James Saldaña
Insurance Industry Perspective On The Importance Of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering For Commercial Structures, James Saldaña
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Pricing in the commercial catastrophe insurance market is primarily driven by computer models. For the evaluation of commercial earthquake insurance risk, the majority of insurers, reinsurers and more recently, rating agencies, rely heavily on the output models developed by a few software vendors. Insurers and reinsurers evaluate their total risk based on output from one or more of these models, and develop prices that depend on the loss estimate data from the models. In an effort to most accurately potential, soil conditions and engineering practices are recognized by the model vendors and incorporated into the loss calculation algorithms. When an insurer …
Liquefaction Resistance Of Gravelly Soils, Michael R. Lewis, Ignacio Arango, Kenneth H. Stokoe Ii
Liquefaction Resistance Of Gravelly Soils, Michael R. Lewis, Ignacio Arango, Kenneth H. Stokoe Ii
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Liquefaction assessments of gravels and soils that contain a large gravel fraction are difficult. Undisturbed (intact) sampling of these soils is problematic and laboratory testing carried out on reconstituted samples or on frozen samples obtained from the field is time consuming, expensive, and interpretation of the results requires considerable judgment. Because of these and other issues, for a remote site in British Columbia, Canada (aka “Study Site”), it was decided to carry out the liquefaction potential assessment using existing published relationships and case history data on similar soils. This case history describes the approach utilized, including material mechanical properties, measured …

Role Of Case Histories On Geotechnical Engineering Teaching And Practice, R. Shivashankar
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical engineering teaching can be made more interesting with the use of modern methods of teaching and learning aids, visits to construction projects, case studies etc. A faculty at an university/technical institute, who is actively involved in geotechnical designs and consultancy works, will have enough case studies, with the examples of which he, will be able to deliver his lectures more effectively and make a good impression upon the students. The universal mantra nowadays is ‘learning should be made more student centric’. At the author's institute, where a post-graduate and doctoral programme in geotechnical engineering are being successfully run for …

Students As Forensic Engineers: An Innovative Approach To Teaching Soil Mechanics, Benoît Courcelles, Lina Forest, Anastassis Kozanitis
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Civil engineers are everyday faced with multidisciplinary problems. Their tasks are not only related to technical aspects, but also involve ethical and environmental issues, economic considerations and, nowadays, international collaborations. This broad spectrum of aspects requires a strong technical knowledge, as well as many interpersonal skills and an interest in societal related issues. When traditional courses are simply adapted to the development of technical competences, introducing students to non-technical (although civil engineering-related) aspects remains a challenge. To remediate to this difficulty, an innovative approach was implemented in the undergraduate course of Soil Mechanics at Polytechnique Montreal. The originality of our …

Supporting Tunnelling Excavation Of An Unstable Slope By Long Term Displacement Monitoring, Francesca Bozzano, Paolo Mazzanti, Alberto Prestininzi
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A complex multi-sensor monitoring platform for the continuous control of an unstable slope affected by tunneling excavation, was realized between 2007 and 2008 after the first collapse of an already built tunnel entrance. The monitoring system was made of some inclinometric and piezometric sensors up to 70 m deep, a topographic system, a Terrestrial SAR Interferometer, a weather station, a photocamera and some load cells installed on bulkheads anchors. The continuous monitoring of the slope during different working phases (planning of stabilization works, realization of stabilizations works and tunneling excavation) allowed us to continuously control the slope behaviour, thus guaranteeing …

Today, wind energy offers the most competitive production prices for renewable energy. Therefore there are strong political and industrial forces, especially in northern Europe, which support the development of the offshore wind industry. The present paper presents the results of drained tests on offshore bucket foundations for wind turbines in saturated dense sand. The bearing capacity of bucket foundations subject to combined loadings which are of interest particularly to the offshore geotechnical engineers, were calculated and found to be largely dependent on embedment ratios and load paths. Based on the results of the analyses, new failure criteria are calibrated for …
Analysis Of Plie Raft Interaction In Sand With Centrifuge Tests, Donggyu Park, Doohyun Kyung, Kyujin Choi, Junhwan Lee
Analysis Of Plie Raft Interaction In Sand With Centrifuge Tests, Donggyu Park, Doohyun Kyung, Kyujin Choi, Junhwan Lee
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In the conventional design for piled rafts, the load capacity of the raft is not in general taken into account and the load capacity of piles is only considered for the estimation of the total load carrying capacity of the piled rafts. As a consequence, piled rafts are often designed with excessively conservative safety margin, raising a need of further investigation of the load capacity mechanism of piled rafts. In this study, a series of centrifuge load tests using model group piles and piled rafts are conducted and used to compare the axial load carrying behaviors of group piles and …

Axial Load Behavior Of A Driven Cast-In-Situ Pile In Sand, Kevin N. Flynn, Bryan A. Mccabe, Derek Egan
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Driven cast-in-situ (DCIS) piles are a popular choice amongst piling contractors due to the ability to readily adjust pile lengths to suit the depth of penetration required. Despite their widespread use, there is a dearth of published data on the axial load behavior of temporary-cased DCIS piles, particularly in cohesionless soils. This paper reports the results of a static compression load test on a 340 mm nominal diameter, 5.75 m long DCIS pile in a dense sand deposit in Shotton, Wales. The test pile was instrumented with vibrating-wire strain gauges at various levels to determine the shaft and base resistance …

A pile-supported bridge was to be constructed at a site in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, located north of St. Paul, in an area underlain by a significant deposit of glaciolacustrine sand, silt, and clay, which extended to a depth of about 39 m. For the geotechnical analysis, the conventional soil borings were supplemented by performing seismic piezocone (SCPTu) soundings. At the beginning of bridge construction, test piles were driven which experienced unusually easy driving to the termination depths of 38.4 to 40.2 m. High strain dynamic testing was used during pile installation and during restrike. After only a 2-day waiting period, …
