Emotion Recognition Using Fuzzy Clustering Analysis, Tejal Udhan

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

This research project investigates using fuzzy clustering algorithms for emotion recognition. Emotion recognition has gained significant attention in recent years in applications such as artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, speech and voice recognition. The ability of a computer or machine to understand human emotion and respond to users in a more human way can lead to significant advances in conversational speech recognition systems, improved quality of life in persons with speech disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and even in voice response systems, such as Google Voice or Apple’s Siri. Experimental results in this area can inform discovery and innovation of machine …

Particle Boards Created From Modified Lignin, Robbie Kazen

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

My name is Robert Kazen, a student directed under Dr. Rafael Quirino currently working on the Lignin Modification project. The research project involves the isolation of lignin from black liquor, a byproduct produced by the paper pulping industry. Isolated chemically the lignin was then modified using two methods, (1) acrylation acid and (2) transesterification with tung oil modifications. The black liquor obtained was sent by the Arizona Chemical and Herty Advanced Materials Development Center. Currently the tung oil modification gives the most valuable product physically and its products will be mainly used for particle board creation and testing. The tung …

Accelerated Insulation Recycling System (Airs), Debalina Ghosh Apr 2016

Accelerated Insulation Recycling System (Airs), Debalina Ghosh

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Construction and demolition waste accounts for 52 % of the total landfilled space. While many advances in disassembly sequencing in buildings have been proposed to recycle concrete, steel, and tile associated with construction and demolition waste, the insulation contained within every building persists as a significant environmental challenge to recycle and reuse. Adding to this problem is the fact that when petroleum based foams are incinerated, it emits carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, isocyanine, acrylonitrile, and hydrogen cyanide in levels exceeding those allowed by the EPA, posing a significant threat to the environment and human health. Design for Disassembly (DfD) approach …

Gas Gap Conductance Between Ht9 And Ss316, Michael Luke Scoggins, Chris Martinez Apr 2016

Gas Gap Conductance Between Ht9 And Ss316, Michael Luke Scoggins, Chris Martinez

Student Research Symposium

Inside a nuclear reactor, it is important to understand in detail the heat transfer between surfaces. This research aims to ensure the safety of new fuel experiments in the Idaho National Laboratory test reactor by studying the thermal properties of stainless steel and high temperature steel surfaces with a microscopic gas gap between them. The complex behavior of the gas requires a combination of experimental and theoretical modeling. A technique called laser flash analysis is being applied to calculate the effective thermal conductivity of the metal-gas-metal composite sample. From there, gap conductance is calculated using the other known physical parameters …

Camp: An Algorithm To Recover Sparse Signals With Unknown Clustering Pattern Using Approximate Message Passing, Mohammad Shekaramiz, Todd K. Moon, Jacob H. Gunther

Student Research Symposium

Recovering clustered sparse signals with an unknown sparsity pattern for the single measurement vector (SMV) problems is considered. The notion of sparsity in this context is referred to the signals having very few non-zero elements in some known basis. In the SMV, the objective is to recover a sparse or compressible signal from a small set of linear non-adaptive measurements. The case considered in this paper is that the signal of interest is not only sparse but also has an unknown clustered pattern, which occurs in many practical situations. In this case, we propose a sparse Bayesian learning algorithm simplified …

Arakniprint: 3d Printing Of Synthetic Spider Silk To Produce Biocompatible And Resorbable Biomaterials, Ashley Ruben, Brianne Bell, Chase Spencer, Craig Soelberg, Dan Gil, Thomas Harris, Richard Decker, Timothy A. Taylor, Randolph V. Lewis Apr 2016

Arakniprint: 3d Printing Of Synthetic Spider Silk To Produce Biocompatible And Resorbable Biomaterials, Ashley Ruben, Brianne Bell, Chase Spencer, Craig Soelberg, Dan Gil, Thomas Harris, Richard Decker, Timothy A. Taylor, Randolph V. Lewis

Student Research Symposium

At $3.07 billion in 2013, the 3D printing industry was projected to reach $12.8 billion in 2018 and exceed $21 billion by 2020 (Wohlers and Caffrey, 2013). A lucrative part of this expanding industry includes printing biocompatible medical implants, devices, and tissue scaffolds. A common problem encountered with traditional devices, implants, and tissue scaffolds is that they are not unique to the patient and lack the necessary strength and biocompatibility. To answer these demands, customizable devices are being produced from patient medical scans and CAD designs using 3D printers. These printers traditionally use thermoplastics because of the ease with which …

Online Dissemination Of Official Information - The 2014 Carlton Complex Wildfires, Apoorva Chauhan

Student Research Symposium

Using the 2014 Carlton Complex wildfires as a case study, we explore how emergency responders and the news media shared official information online during this crisis event. We first identified the local emergency response and news media agencies for this event and then collected data from each agency’s Facebook account, Twitter account, and website. The data show that most of the online information about this event came from the local agencies handling the event. The data also show that in most cases, event updates were first reported online by the local news media of the affected cities and communities. We …

Secretion Of Bioplastic Polymers From Methanotrophic Bacteria Grown Using Natural Gas, Chad L. Nielsen, Charles D. Miller Apr 2016

Secretion Of Bioplastic Polymers From Methanotrophic Bacteria Grown Using Natural Gas, Chad L. Nielsen, Charles D. Miller

Student Research Symposium

Biodegradable bioplastics show promise as a replacement for traditional plastics. Cost of production due to the cost of feedstocks and separation/purification processes are the main obstacles to widespread use of bioplastics. The possibility of reducing these costs through using methane gas as a feedstock and genetically transforming a methanotrophic bacterium to secrete bioplastics was investigated through experimentation. The bacteria are a promising option for bioplastic production.

Shear Testing Of Precast Concrete Sandwich Wall Panel Composite Shear Connectors, Taylor Sorensen, Jaiden Olsen, Marc Maguire

Student Research Symposium

As energy codes become more stringent, thermal efficiency of Precast Concrete Sandwich Panel Walls has become more important. This paper addresses the problem of predicting the behavior of full scale precast concrete sandwich panel walls, using data collected from small, inexpensive push-off specimens. Several fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) connectors being used today underwent shear testing performed on component scale push-off specimens. Each specimen contained several of the FRP connectors and the variables studied were wythe thickness, insulation type and insulation bond. A simplified beam spring model was created which uses beams to represent the concrete wythes and shear springs to …

Accident Events In Automated Vehicles, Peter Hancock, Tiffani Walker, Valarie Yerdon, William Volante, Shu Ling Li

Human Factors and Applied Psychology Student Conference

We are all aware of the increasing penetration of purely automated vehicles into the coming panoply of ground transportation. Much of the test and evaluation procedures of these respective vehicles have occurred on unidirectional, multi-lane highways and freeways where the central computational problem is relatively simple longitudinal and lateral control. In essence, these controls over what Gibson and Crooks labelled the ‘field of safe travel,’ can be affected by a suite of on-board sensors that measure a combination of range (d) and closure velocity (v). These combinatorial kinematics and kinetics can then provide satisficed solutions to the question of relative …

From the days of “The Rocket Men” to the uprising of SpaceX, spaceflight has always inspired awe in humanity. If you examine the men that were apart of those first missions, you will find that they were not only the most capable, but won the genetic lottery to become this nations first astronauts. Looking to the times of Mercury, you see the extreme constraints that potential astronaut candidates had to meet in order to go to space. Aside from the rigorous medical testing, potential candidates also had to meet strict height and weight requirements. Early candidates could not be taller …

This presentation discusses the development process of the MEERS MCS from a human factors standpoint.

Sparse Recovery With Unknown Sparsity Pattern Via Multiple Measurement Vectors, Mohammad Shekaramiz, Todd K. Moon, Jacob H. Gunther Apr 2016

Sparse Recovery With Unknown Sparsity Pattern Via Multiple Measurement Vectors, Mohammad Shekaramiz, Todd K. Moon, Jacob H. Gunther

Student Research Symposium

In this work, we investigate finding the supports of sparse signals via multiple measurement vectors (MMVs). MMV can be thought as a collection of single measurement vectors (SMVs), in which all the SMVs share the same sparsity pattern, referred to as joint sparsity in the literature. The term sparse is referred to the signals that have very few non-zero (active) elements. The SMV problem is essentially a computational problem related to compressive sensing (CS) with the core idea of providing the possibility of measuring and representing a sparse or compressible signal from a small set of non-adaptive linear measurements. Here, …

Access to clean drinking water is a large problem that our world is facing today. Consuming contaminated water can lead to the spread of water-borne illnesses. Populations without the security of water struggle to develop, as seen predominately in Africa. As Oregonians prepare for life after a major earthquake which could devastate the infrastructure that delivers clean water to our homes, a water filtration system should be part of a family’s emergency preparedness plan.

There are a large variety of processes for achieving fresh water. Combining all of the necessary components to lead to clean water is a complex process, …

Puddl: Gamifying Water Conservation, Quince Assenberg, Jack Chen, Denny Glenn, Jessica Lam

PSU High School Innovation Challenge

As the global population surges, the demand for fresh water will only increase. With no technological breakthrough on the horizon, it is more important than ever to conserve water and not waste this precious resource. Water conservation is a serious issue, and will only become more severe as global warming worsens. As the global temperature increases, and rainfall becomes more sporadic, it will be important for communities to find new ways to save water. This push has already been made in certain areas in the united states, California, where they were forced to reduce their water consumption by 25%.

Through …

In America today, over 75% of the nation’s water is used in the irrigation of agriculture. The main users -- and abusers -- of water in the United States are farmers. In addition, many areas in the U.S. are facing drought conditions, especially in western states. Also, while the drought conditions in California are receding, water shortage as an issue demands a long term solution.

Isolated Water Circulation And Filtration System, Adrik Gurganus, Mellonie Mwawai, Wysteria Cedillo-Nielsen, Morgan Rekart, Zander Hoffman

PSU High School Innovation Challenge

One big issue we are addressing is the large amount greywater produced by average households around the country. Still, the main problem is that, in areas affected by drought such as California, people have little available clean water, and this system will greatly benefit these people directly. The Isolated water system uses a filtration combined of organic materials, soaps, dirt, foods and sink to filter out the grey used water. Since the water system is not connected with the local water system if there were a natural disaster the owner would have free access to a water source while the …

Residential Greywater Recycling System, Sophia Bui, Clare Clark, Anthony Hoang, Kim Le, Skyler Mishler, Janette Soler, Teresa Tran

PSU High School Innovation Challenge

In a typical household, a majority of the fresh water is utilized by the shower, bathroom sinks and laundry. Water exiting from these fixtures is considered greywater. This is wasteful because the greywater is being combined with blackwater making it unusable. If greywater could be separated and captured, it can be reused for other purposes. We came to the conclusion that greywater is able to be recycled and reused for flushing excreta.

Many cities across the country have experienced extreme water problems. The City of Portland has issued several water boiling advisories due to E. coli contamination. Additionally, there has been incidents of serious contaminants like lead leaching in water systems (Flint, Michigan). The Portland Water Bureau does not use a water treatment plant due to the quality of our water sources; a chlorination plant is used to chlorinate the water from the Bull Run Watershed (our main water source). Not having a water treatment plant makes Oregon more prone to a prolonged absence of potable water should the supply be contaminated. …

People drown all of the time. Whether it's a young child playing in the river or a college student partying on a boat, there is always the danger of drowning. It is not always easy to tell if somebody is drowning. If you are a parent, you won’t always be watching your kids. When you look away and they start drowning, there is no safe way to be alerted of your child’s situation.
