Acceleration Of Statistical Detection Of Zero-Day Malware In The Memory Dump Using Cuda-Enabled Gpu Hardware, Igor Korkin, Iwan Nesterow May 2016

Acceleration Of Statistical Detection Of Zero-Day Malware In The Memory Dump Using Cuda-Enabled Gpu Hardware, Igor Korkin, Iwan Nesterow

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This paper focuses on the anticipatory enhancement of methods of detecting stealth software. Cyber security detection tools are insufficiently powerful to reveal the most recent cyber-attacks which use malware. In this paper, we will present first an idea of the highest stealth malware, as this is the most complicated scenario for detection because it combines both existing anti-forensic techniques together with their potential improvements. Second, we will present new detection methods which are resilient to this hidden prototype. To help solve this detection challenge, we have analyzed Windows’ memory content using a new method of Shannon Entropy calculation; methods of …

Using Computer Behavior Profiles To Differentiate Between Users In A Digital Investigation, Shruti Gupta, Marcus Rogers May 2016

Using Computer Behavior Profiles To Differentiate Between Users In A Digital Investigation, Shruti Gupta, Marcus Rogers

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Most digital crimes involve finding evidence on the computer and then linking it to a suspect using login information, such as a username and a password. However, login information is often shared or compromised. In such a situation, there needs to be a way to identify the user without relying exclusively on login credentials. This paper introduces the concept that users may show behavioral traits which might provide more information about the user on the computer. This hypothesis was tested by conducting an experiment in which subjects were required to perform common tasks on a computer, over multiple sessions. The …

Current Challenges And Future Research Areas For Digital Forensic Investigation, David Lillis, Brett A. Becker, Tadhg O’Sullivan, Mark Scanlon

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Given the ever-increasing prevalence of technology in modern life, there is a corresponding increase in the likelihood of digital devices being pertinent to a criminal investigation or civil litigation. As a direct consequence, the number of investigations requiring digital forensic expertise is resulting in huge digital evidence backlogs being encountered by law enforcement agencies throughout the world. It can be anticipated that the number of cases requiring digital forensic analysis will greatly increase in the future. It is also likely that each case will require the analysis of an increasing number of devices including computers, smartphones, tablets, cloud-based services, Internet …

Forensic Analysis Of Ares Galaxy Peer-To-Peer Network, Frank Kolenbrander, Nhien-An Le-Khac, Tahar Kechadi

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Child Abuse Material (CAM) is widely available on P2P networks. Over the last decade several tools were made for 24/7 monitoring of peer-to-peer (P2P) networks to discover suspects that use these networks for downloading and distribution of CAM. For some countries the amount of cases generated by these tools is so great that Law Enforcement (LE) just cannot handle them all. This is not only leading to backlogs and prioritizing of cases but also leading to discussions about the possibility of disrupting these networks and sending warning messages to potential CAM offenders. Recently, investigators are reporting that they are creating …

Can Neuromorphic Computer Vision Inform Vision Science? Disparity Estimation As A Case Study, Guido Maiello, Manuela Chessa, Peter J. Bex, Fabio Solari

MODVIS Workshop

The primate visual system efficiently and effectively solves a multitude of tasks from orientation detection to motion detection. The Computer Vision community is therefore beginning to implement algorithms that mimic the processing hierarchies present in the primate visual system in the hope of achieving flexible and robust artificial vision systems. Here, we reappropriate the neuroscience “borrowed” by the Computer Vision community and ask whether neuromorphic computer vision solutions may give us insight into the functioning of the primate visual system. Specifically, we implement a neuromorphic algorithm for disparity estimation and compare its performance against that of human observers. The algorithm …

3-D Shape Recovery From A Single Camera Image, Vijai Jayadevan, Aaron Michaux, Edward Delp, Zygmunt Pizlo May 2016

3-D Shape Recovery From A Single Camera Image, Vijai Jayadevan, Aaron Michaux, Edward Delp, Zygmunt Pizlo

MODVIS Workshop

3-D shape recovery is an ill-posed inverse problem which must be solved by using a priori constraints. We use symmetry and planarity constraints to recover 3-D shapes from a single image. Once we assume that the object to be reconstructed is symmetric, all that is left to do is to estimate the plane of symmetry and establish the symmetry correspondence between the various parts of the object. The edge map of the image of an object serves as a good representation of its 2-D shape and establishing symmetry correspondence means identifying pairs of symmetric curves in the edge map. The …

Figure-Ground Organization Using 3d Symmetry, Aaron Michaux, Vijai Jayadevan, Edward Delp, Zygmunt Pizlo May 2016

Figure-Ground Organization Using 3d Symmetry, Aaron Michaux, Vijai Jayadevan, Edward Delp, Zygmunt Pizlo

MODVIS Workshop

We present a novel approach to object localization using mirror symmetry as a general purpose and biologically motivated prior. 3D symmetry leads to good segmentation because (i) almost all objects exhibit symmetry, and (ii) configurations of objects are not likely to be symmetric unless they share some additional relationship. Furthermore, psychophysical evidence suggests that the human vision system makes use symmetry in constructing 3D percepts, indicating that symmetry may be important in object localization. No general purpose approach is known for solving 3D symmetry correspondence in 2D camera images, because few invariants exist. Therefore, to test symmetry as a clustering …

Modelling Short-Latency Disparity-Vergence Eye Movements Under Dichoptic Unbalanced Stimulation, Agostino Gibaldi, Guido Maiello, Peter J. Bex, Silvio P. Sabatini

MODVIS Workshop

Vergence eye movements align the optical axes of our two eyes onto an object of interest, thus facilitating the binocular summation of the images projected onto the left and the right retinae into a single percept. Both the computational substrate and the functional behaviour of binocular vergence eye movements have been the topic of in depth investigation. Here, we attempt to bring together what is known about computation and function of vergence mechanism. To this aim, we evaluated of a biologically inspired model of horizontal and vertical vergence control, based on a network of V1 simple and complex cells. The …

Measuring And Modeling Shared Visual Attention, Jeffrey B. Mulligan, Patrick Gontar May 2016

Measuring And Modeling Shared Visual Attention, Jeffrey B. Mulligan, Patrick Gontar

MODVIS Workshop

Multi-person teams are sometimes responsible for critical tasks, such as flying an airliner. Here we present a method using gaze tracking data to assess shared visual attention, a term we use to describe the situation where team members are attending to a common set of elements in the environment. Gaze data are quantized with respect to a set of N areas of interest (AOIs); these are then used to construct a time series of N dimensional vectors, with each vector component representing one of the AOIs, all set to 0 except for the component corresponding to the currently fixated …

Comparing Mode Shares For Non-Residential Destinations In Urban And Suburban Environments, Tasnia Subrin May 2016

Comparing Mode Shares For Non-Residential Destinations In Urban And Suburban Environments, Tasnia Subrin

Student Research Symposium

To ensure facility for multimodal transportation is one of the most important concerns in today’s transportation sector, with initiatives being taken to make multimodal transportation popular. The built environment variables have a strong relationship with transportation mode choice, but whether that relationship holds true in urban and suburban neighborhoods in the same manner has not been considered. Using data for three non-residential land uses, this research explores whether the built environment variables in suburban areas influences mode share like it does in urban areas. We used survey data conducted at the establishments regarding respondents’ travel characteristics from a previous study, …

Factors Affecting Big Data Technology Adoption, Nayem Rahman May 2016

Factors Affecting Big Data Technology Adoption, Nayem Rahman

Student Research Symposium

With the advancement of computer science, hardware and software engineering, and computing power, and later with the advent of the internet, social networking tools and other sources such as sensors data growth has increased significantly. These data are called big data which are mostly unstructured, generated in large volumes, data need to be captured in near real-time. To handle big data a completely new set of tools and technologies are being emerged. I have studied big data literature to identify the factors that might influence big data adoption. I was able to list quite a few factors or attributes that …

Fabrication Of Nano-Scale Metal Organic Framework (Mof) Loaded Nanofibrous Membrane For Enhanced Gas Adsorption Performance, Wahiduz Zaman Apr 2016

Fabrication Of Nano-Scale Metal Organic Framework (Mof) Loaded Nanofibrous Membrane For Enhanced Gas Adsorption Performance, Wahiduz Zaman

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Nitrogen storage capacity was investigated on a highly efficient adsorbent nanoparticle called Metal Organic Framework (MOF). A copper-based MOF called MOF-199 has been synthesized from subsequent reaction of Copper nitrate (10 wt.%), Trimesic Acid (8 wt.%) and Triethylamine (0.3 wt.%). TEA served as a deprotonating agent to form small particles. The reactants were mixed in a solution of Dimethylformamide (DMF), Ethanol and Deionized water (1:1:1) and vigorously sonicated for an hour at room temperature. This yielded single blue octahedral MOF crystals which were later washed with mother solution and extracted via centrifuge. The MOFªs were later activated for gas adsorption …

Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing, Micheal Santangelo Apr 2016

Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing, Micheal Santangelo

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Additive manufacturing is a rapidly developing technology which promises to drastically reduce the cost and waste associated with manufacturing parts. However, current systems of additive manufacturing used for creating metal parts which are suitable for use in the aerospace, automotive, and defense industries are complex, expensive, and not robust enough to produce a wide range of part features and geometries. A relatively new method, called wire arc additive manufacturing(WAAM) is a low cost option that can create parts which have a near-net shape, and only require a small amount of post processing before they are ready for use. This system, …

Evaluation Of Resistance To Rutting And Moisture Susceptibility On High Rap Content Asphalt Concretes Using Hamburg Wheel Tracking Device, Sungun Kim Apr 2016

Evaluation Of Resistance To Rutting And Moisture Susceptibility On High Rap Content Asphalt Concretes Using Hamburg Wheel Tracking Device, Sungun Kim

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Reclaimed or recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) stands for materials that are removed and reprocessed asphalt pavement materials. It is usually from asphalt road maintenance and reconstruction. Past research has proved that the use of RAP will save natural resources by incorporating the old asphalt and aggregates into the new asphalt paving material production. This practice results in cost reduction in roadway construction and maintenance, and thus benefits both the agencies and the public. However, there is a concern over the strength and durability of the pavements containing high RAP content because the old asphalt binder and aggregates aged by traffic …

Autonomous Methods In The Application Of Simple Swarm Capabilities, Joseph Watt Iii Apr 2016

Autonomous Methods In The Application Of Simple Swarm Capabilities, Joseph Watt Iii

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Swarm technology is a relatively new aspect to the drone industry. It involves multiple drones being able to communicate with each other and relay this back to the user. From this standpoint one operator can control all of them at once while only giving directions to one or more. This involves the use of different autonomous algorithms, similar to autopilot where programs fly the plane, that relay to one another on what adjustments to make or where to go. This idea is very useful in search and rescue operations where it might be too dangerous to insert a human. Also …

Measuring Frequency Availability For Cognitive Radio Networks By Means Of Adaptive Threshold, Isaac Cushman Apr 2016

Measuring Frequency Availability For Cognitive Radio Networks By Means Of Adaptive Threshold, Isaac Cushman

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Radio Frequency spectrums designated by the FCC broadcast almost all mediums of communication, in both licensed and unlicensed bands, within the United States. As technology rapidly grows however, the availability of open frequencies will quickly decrease. Our goal is to design and experimentally test a system that allows for secondary users to access frequency bands that are not currently being optimally used by the primary users and also determine the effects of mobility on the ability for a sensor to accurately find frequencies by determining an appropriate power level for communication. We set up experimental scenarios in order to test …
