A Customized Artificial Intelligence Based Career Choice Recommender System For A Rural University, Nosipho Carol Mavuso, Nobert Jere, Darelle Vangreunen
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
Rapid technological developments have enabled users to be supported and guided in decision-making. An example of this is the ability of tertiary students to use technology to explore different career options and make informed decisions about their future. Notwithstanding the increasing use of technology in general, the technology for career guidance and personalized career recommendations in South Africa is still limited. There are some limiting factors such as the ever-looming challenge of limited access to technology, language barriers and cultural differences that are prevalent in rural areas. With this premise, this study collected quantitative data from students at an Eastern …
A Low-Complexity Algorithm To Determine Spacecraft Trajectories, Sirani Perera
A Low-Complexity Algorithm To Determine Spacecraft Trajectories, Sirani Perera
Math Department Colloquium Series
The growing traffic within the Cislunar region has created a need for computationally effective methods to obtain the trajectories of spacecraft in the Cislunar region. By developing algorithms with low time and arithmetic complexities, we can effectively address these needs.
In this talk, we will present a mathematical model that uses interpolation and boundary conditions to obtain trajectories for satellites based on the principles of three-body dynamics. Following the model, we propose a low- complexity algorithm to generate satellite trajectories. Once the algorithm is proposed, we will apply it to the relevant periodic orbits in the Cislunar region. Finally, we …
A Numerical Investigation Realizing The Flow Structure And Heat Transfer Performance Of The Potential Impinging Jets, Mohammed Sami Uddin Khan
A Numerical Investigation Realizing The Flow Structure And Heat Transfer Performance Of The Potential Impinging Jets, Mohammed Sami Uddin Khan
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
The demand for improvement in the performance of gas turbines has led to the consideration of flows at increasingly high temperatures, but this introduces challenges in terms of maintaining their structural integrity and preventing overheating. To respond to these challenges, gas turbine manufacturers have turned to internal cooling, and jet impingement provides an effective solution for cooling the leading edge of the blades of gas turbines. In this study, the author numerically simulated the cooling performance of the leading edge of the blades of a gas turbine under constant heat flux by using five configurations of jet impingement: a steady …

Integrating External Sensors With Crazyflie Drones, Xiaowen Wang, Dheryta Jaisinghani, Andrew Berns
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
- Drones are widely used: Mini drones such as Crazyflie 2.1 are used in a variety of fields.
- Grove Sound Sensor function: Grove Sound Sensor can capture sound, providing more application possibilities for drones.
- The potential of Crazyflie 2.1: Although Crazyflie 2.1 has the potential to be an integrated sensor platform, prior to this project, it was uncertain whether sensors could be connected on it.
- Project motivation: Our project aims to explore whether Crazyflie 2.1 can be connected to the Grove Sound Sensor and collect and process data from the sensor.
- Impact of the project: If successful, this project will open …

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
Cellulose is a substance abundant in nature, found in fruits and vegetables, plant cell walls (National Center for Biotechnology Information, 2023), and wood (Sjostrom, 1993). The abundance of cellulose is attributable to its linear chemical structure, as it is composed of long strands of glucose molecules linked together by hydrogen atoms, which enable the substance to withstand significant pressure without breaking (Rongpipi et al., 2019). This property—known as high tensile strength—is joined by its non-toxicity and sustainability, given cellulose may be degraded and renewed naturally (Kaur, 2021). These various properties indicate versatility, and its resultant current and desired uses—such as …
Flow Through Processing Of Nanocellulose For Space Exploration Applications, Dylan Seiffert, T. E. Kidd
Flow Through Processing Of Nanocellulose For Space Exploration Applications, Dylan Seiffert, T. E. Kidd
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
Nanocellulose is synthesized from cellulose, which is the most abundant organic molecule found in nature. Nanocellulose solids are biodegradable and have a strength-to-weight ratio eight times that of steel1. The production of nanocellulose solids is challenging due to the large volume loss that occurs during the curing process as well as the time and cost associated with ultrasonic processing. The loss of volume during curing often results in cracking and deformation of the cured solid. The issues caused by the large volume loss can be mitigated using additives that do not compromise the strength, shape, or machineability of …
Impacts And Applications Of Vegetable Glycerin On Nanocellulose, Elise Hong-Miller, Dylan Seiffert, T. E. Kidd
Impacts And Applications Of Vegetable Glycerin On Nanocellulose, Elise Hong-Miller, Dylan Seiffert, T. E. Kidd
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
Nanocellulose is created by breaking down cellulose, the most common organic molecule found in nature. Nanocellulose has attractive properties, such as a very high strength-to-weight ratio, for many different applications. A major challenge is that nanocellulose has a very high shrinkage % (~90%) when it is dried, as well as a strong probability to crack. Different additives can be added in varying amounts to either mitigate or intensify these aspects, as well as affect its drying conditions. This investigation is helping the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the U.S. Army to find a use for this highly renewable …
Waste-To-Watts: An Energy Analysis Of Municipal Solid Waste As Fuel, Marianna Fischer, Brandon Lewis, Avary Zachary
Waste-To-Watts: An Energy Analysis Of Municipal Solid Waste As Fuel, Marianna Fischer, Brandon Lewis, Avary Zachary
2023 Symposium
Across the United States, there are two pressing problems: garbage disposal and electricity generation. Firstly, the infrastructure in place doesn’t properly dispose of or reuse municipal solid waste. In addition, power insecurity is becoming more prominent as power grids are becoming outdated. This project aims to provide an alternative solution for both issues by using a Brayton cycle based waste-to-energy incinerator. The overall system efficiency relies heavily on the feedstock used for incineration. One way efficiency can be increased is through pelletizing trash, ensuring an even burn profile, providing the correct amount of feedstock, and ensuring adequate energy production. However, …
