Fully Compliant Tensural Bistable Mechanisms (Ftbm) With On-Chip Thermal Actuation, Daniel L. Wilcox Jul 2004

Fully Compliant Tensural Bistable Mechanisms (Ftbm) With On-Chip Thermal Actuation, Daniel L. Wilcox

Theses and Dissertations

The Fully compliant Tensural Bistable Mechanism (FTBM) class is introduced. The class consists of fully compliant linear bistable mechanisms that achieve much of their displacement and bistable behavior through tension loading of compliant segments. Multiple topologies of designs arising from the FTBM class were designed using a finite element analysis (FEA) model with optimization. In a coupled design approach, thermal actuators were optimized to the force and displacement requirements of the bistable mech-anisms, and selected FTBM devices were combined in switching systems with the result-ing Thermomechanical In-plane Microactuators (TIMs) and Amplified Thermomechanical In-plane Microactuators (ATIMs). Successful on-chip actuation was demonstrated. …

Unitary Space-Time Transmit Diversity For Multiple Antenna Self-Interference Suppression, Adam Lane Anderson Jul 2004

Unitary Space-Time Transmit Diversity For Multiple Antenna Self-Interference Suppression, Adam Lane Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

A common practice for government defense agencies and commercial aeronautical companies is to use dual antennas on test flight air vehicles in order to overcome occlusion issues during high-speed telemetric maneuvers. The dual antennas, though never being masked at the same time, unfortunately lead to a drastic increase in nulls in the signal pattern. The result of this interference pattern can be compared to the effect of fading in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multi-path scattering environment. Confidence in this comparison leads to the use of unitary space-time MIMO codes to overcome the signal self-interference. The possibility and performance of several …

A Ray-Based Investigation Of The Statistical Characteristics And Efficient Representation Of Multi-Antenna Communication Channels, Gus Ryan German Jul 2004

A Ray-Based Investigation Of The Statistical Characteristics And Efficient Representation Of Multi-Antenna Communication Channels, Gus Ryan German

Theses and Dissertations

Multi-antenna communication systems are attracting research interest as a means to increase the information capacity, reliability, and spectral efficiency of wireless information transfer. Ray-tracing methods predict the behavior of wireless channels using a model of the propagation environment and are a low-cost alternative to direct measurements. We use ray tracing simulations to validate the statistical time and angle of arrival characteristics of an indoor multipath channel and compare model parameter estimates with estimates derived from channel sounding measurements. Ray tracing predicts the time and angle clustering of multipaths observed in the measurements and provides model parameter estimates which are closely …

Architectures For Symbol Timing Synchronization In Mimo Communications, Kejing Liu Jul 2004

Architectures For Symbol Timing Synchronization In Mimo Communications, Kejing Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Maximum likelihood symbol timing estimation for communication over a frequency non-selective MIMO fading channel is developed. The cases of known data (data-aided estimation) and unknown data (non-data-aided estimation) together with known channel and unknown channel are considered. The analysis shows that the log-likelihood functions and their approximations can be interpreted as SISO log-likelihood functions operating on each of the receive antennas. Previously published symbol timing estimators are shown to be special cases of the more general framework presented. Architectures based on both block processing and sequential processing using a discrete-time phase-locked loop are summarized. Performance examples over a MIMO channel …

Consensus Seeking, Formation Keeping, And Trajectory Tracking In Multiple Vehicle Cooperative Control, Wei Ren Jul 2004

Consensus Seeking, Formation Keeping, And Trajectory Tracking In Multiple Vehicle Cooperative Control, Wei Ren

Theses and Dissertations

Cooperative control problems for multiple vehicle systems can be categorized as either formation control problems with applications to mobile robots, unmanned air vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, satellites, aircraft, spacecraft, and automated highway systems, or non-formation control problems such as task assignment, cooperative transport, cooperative role assignment, air traffic control, cooperative timing, and cooperative search. The cooperative control of multiple vehicle systems poses significant theoretical and practical challenges. For cooperative control strategies to be successful, numerous issues must be addressed. We consider three important and correlated issues: consensus seeking, formation keeping, and trajectory tracking. For consensus seeking, we investigate algorithms and …

Flexible Machine Tool Control For Direct, In-Process Dimensional Part Inspection, Tyler Addison Davis Jul 2004

Flexible Machine Tool Control For Direct, In-Process Dimensional Part Inspection, Tyler Addison Davis

Theses and Dissertations

For some time now coordinate measuring machines have been an integral part of the shop floor. The goal has been to make coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) into tools that can easily be used by machinists to improve their manufacturing capabilities. The value of a CMM as a quality control tool is undisputed. Now efforts are being made to further reduce the time and cost of measurement by reducing the physical distance between machining and measuring processes. The ability to reduce that distance to zero and measure a part directly on the chip-making machine has been a goal for many years. …

Wideband Channel Characterization For Mimo Scenario, Justin T. Holzer Jul 2004

Wideband Channel Characterization For Mimo Scenario, Justin T. Holzer

Theses and Dissertations

Because broadband wireless systems benefit from accurate channel characterization, there is growing interest in broadband wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel models. This thesis verifies the suitability of the Saleh Valenzuela with Angle (SVA) model for wideband MIMO communication models. While recent wideband MIMO measurements have been obtained by switching a single transmit/receive pair over all possible antenna pair combinations, a simultaneous probing system is superior because of the time required for the antenna-switching channel measurements. This work provides two different wideband channel estimation algorithms based on simultaneous transmission from and reception on all antennas. Simulated data from an electromagnetic ray …

Motion Compensation Of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar, David P. Duncan Jul 2004

Motion Compensation Of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar, David P. Duncan

Theses and Dissertations

Deviations from a nominal, straight-line flight path of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) lead to inaccurate and defocused radar images. This thesis is an investigation into the improvement of the motion compensation algorithm created for the BYU inteferometric synthetic aperture radar, YINSAR. The existing BYU SAR processing algorithm produces improved radar imagery but does not fully account for variations in attitude (roll, pitch, yaw) and does not function well with large position deviations. Results in this thesis demonstrate that a higher order motion compensation algorithm is not as effective as using a segmented reference track, coupled with the current lower-order …

Time Blanking For Gbt Data With Radar Rfi, Weizhen Dong Jul 2004

Time Blanking For Gbt Data With Radar Rfi, Weizhen Dong

Theses and Dissertations

The 1215 MHz to 1400 MHz band is important for radio astronomers to observe redshifted extragalactic hydrogen ionic (HI). Observations at these frequencies are complicated by radio frequency interference (RFI) from strong man-made transmissions such as the ARSR-3 Air Surveillance Radar. In this thesis, we characterize some data files recorded at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) at Green Bank, West Virginia, USA, where this RADAR system causes significant data corruption. Using this data, we present a blanking technique to separate RFI from cosmic signal. There are generally two blanking approaches, time window blanking and detected pulse blanking. Compared with …

Non-Uniformity Compensation For Fiber Optic Weigh In Motion Sensor, Shinobu Doi Jul 2004

Non-Uniformity Compensation For Fiber Optic Weigh In Motion Sensor, Shinobu Doi

Theses and Dissertations

This report studies the effect on the accuracy o f weigh-in-motion (WIM) measurements due to the non-uniformity along the length o f a fiber-optic WIM sensor, and demonstrates an effective compensation method. Accurate WIM calculations require accurate input signals from the road sensors. Today’s WIM systems that use piezzo-electric sensors, electronic strain gages or load cells have errors anywhere from +/-6% to +/-50%, with -i-/-15-20% being the typical range. Fiber-optic WIM sensors have promising advantages. However, the state of the technology is still in its infancy consisting mostly of qualitative studies. This report isolates the problem of non-uniform sensitivity in …

Dynamic Element Matching Techniques For Delta-Sigma Adcs With Large Internal Quantizers, Brent C. Nordick Jul 2004

Dynamic Element Matching Techniques For Delta-Sigma Adcs With Large Internal Quantizers, Brent C. Nordick

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents two methods that enable high internal quantizer resolution in delta-sigma analog-to-digital converters. Increasing the quantizer resolution in a delta-sigma modulator can increase SNR, improve stability and reduce integrator power consumption. However, each added bit of quantizer resolution also causes an exponential increase in the power dissipation, required area and complexity of the dynamic element matching (DEM) circuit required to attenuate digital-to-analog converter (DAC) mismatch errors. One way to overcome these drawbacks is to segment the feedback signal, creating a "coarse" signal and a "fine" signal. This reduces the DEM circuit complexity, power dissipation, and size. However, it …

The Development Of An Accelerated Testing Facility For The Study Of Deposits In Land-Based Gas Turbine Engines, Jared Wilfred Jensen Jun 2004

The Development Of An Accelerated Testing Facility For The Study Of Deposits In Land-Based Gas Turbine Engines, Jared Wilfred Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Turbine engine efficiency modeling depends on many parameters related to fluid dynamics and heat transfer. Many of these parameters change dynamically once the engine enters service and begins to experience surface degradation. This thesis presents a validation of the design and operation of an accelerated testing facility for the study of foreign deposit layers typical to the operation of land-based gas turbines. It also reports on the use of this facility in an effort to characterize the change in thermal resistance on the surface of turbine blades as deposits accumulate. The facility was designed to produce turbine deposits in a …

Coordinated Regional And City Planning Using A Genetic Algorithm, Michael B. Lowry Jun 2004

Coordinated Regional And City Planning Using A Genetic Algorithm, Michael B. Lowry

Theses and Dissertations

Improved methods of planning are needed to deal with today's issues of traffic congestion, sprawl, and loss of greenspace. Past research and recent legislation call for new methods that will consider a regional perspective. Regional planning is challenged with two difficult questions:

1.Is it possible to achieve regional goals without infringing upon the local autonomy of city planners?

2.Is it possible to objectively analyze the thousands, even millions, of land use and transportation plans to find the best design?

Metropolitan regions across the country have made great efforts to answer the first question. Unfortunately, effective methods for harmonizing the goals …

Effects Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Fusion Welded 304l Stainless Steel, Colin J. Sterling Jun 2004

Effects Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Fusion Welded 304l Stainless Steel, Colin J. Sterling

Theses and Dissertations

Friction stir processing (FSP) has been utilized to locally process regions of arc weldments in 304L stainless steel to improve the microstructure and mechanical performance. The cast microstructure and coarse delta-ferrite has been replaced with a fine-grained wrought microstructure. Furthermore, twins were introduced throughout the friction stir processed region. Although sub-surface sigma and carbides were introduced during FSP, their presence is not expected to adversely affect the resulting mechanical or corrosion properties of friction stir processed 304L arc welds. The resulting mechanical properties of FS processed weldments were also an improvement over as-welded arc welds. FSP resulted in an increase …

Optimization Of A Quantum Cascade Laser Operating In The Terahertz Frequency Range Using A Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm, Traci A. Keller Jun 2004

Optimization Of A Quantum Cascade Laser Operating In The Terahertz Frequency Range Using A Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm, Traci A. Keller

Theses and Dissertations

A quantum cascade (QC) laser is a specific type of semiconductor laser that operates through principles of quantum mechanics. In less than a decade QC lasers are already able to outperform previously designed double heterostructure semiconductor lasers. Because there is a genuine lack of compact and coherent devices which can operate in the far-infrared region the motivation exists for designing a terahertz QC laser. A device operating at this frequency is expected to be more efficient and cost effective than currently existing devices. It has potential applications in the fields of spectroscopy, astronomy, medicine and free-space communication as well as …

Excited States Of Silicon Carbide Clusters By Time Dependent Density Functional Theory, John E. Boyd Jun 2004

Excited States Of Silicon Carbide Clusters By Time Dependent Density Functional Theory, John E. Boyd

Theses and Dissertations

Previous AFIT research with density functional theory (DFT) has shown itself to be accurate for small SimCn (m,n ≤ 5) clusters at a fraction of the cost of other quantum mechanical methods, but it is only a ground state theory. Time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), however, is able to calculate excited states as well. Evaluating the accuracy of these methods with respect to the excited states of these clusters was the focus of this research, specifically with respect to the excitation energies, geometries, and vibrational frequencies. It is shown that for the excited states that can …

Aerodynamic Analysis Of Lattice Grid Fins In Transonic Flow, Karl S. Orthner Jun 2004

Aerodynamic Analysis Of Lattice Grid Fins In Transonic Flow, Karl S. Orthner

Theses and Dissertations

Lattice grid fins have been studied for missile tail control for several years. A lattice grid fin can be described as an unconventional missile control surface comprised of an outer frame supported by an inner lattice grid of lifting surfaces. This unconventional fin design offers favorable lift characteristics at high angle of attack as well as almost zero hinge moments allowing the use of small and light actuators. In addition, they promise good storability for potential tube-launched and internal carriage dispenser-launched applications. The drawback for the lattice grid fins is the high drag and potentially poor radar cross section performance …

Magnetogasdynamic Flow Acceleration In A Scramjet Nozzle, Brian H. Harrington Jun 2004

Magnetogasdynamic Flow Acceleration In A Scramjet Nozzle, Brian H. Harrington

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of magnetogasdynamic (MGD) interactions on flow acceleration and thrust in a scramjet accelerator/nozzle are examined numerically at a free-stream flight condition of Mach 8. The parameters of conductivity pattern and load factor are varied in both inviscid and viscous flow regimes with the intent of increasing axial force exerted on the flow through a scramjet accelerator. The numerical code solves the Navier-Stokes equations with additional source terms for the MGD forces and energy interactions. An accelerating Lorentz force is applied to the flow resulting from a constant magnetic field and an electric field produced by two continuous side …

Detached Eddy Simulation Analysis Of Pak-B Low Pressure Turbine Blade, Kyle Malone Jun 2004

Detached Eddy Simulation Analysis Of Pak-B Low Pressure Turbine Blade, Kyle Malone

Theses and Dissertations

Two cases were computationally investigated using the detached eddy simulation (DES) turbulence model: an unmodified Pak-B blade and a Pak-B blade with a dimple located at 65% of axial chord. Both cases were created so that they simulated an infinite span with an infinite number of dimples. The cases were run for an inlet Reynolds number of 25,000. The computed results were used to resolve the location of separation and reattachment, visualize the streamlines for the dimpled case, build velocity magnitude contour and vector plots, and map the thickness of the boundary layer. The results were then compared to previous …

Isomer Heat Exchanger Combustor Replacement For A Supersonic Ramjet Powered Vehicle, Jonathan C. Cox Jun 2004

Isomer Heat Exchanger Combustor Replacement For A Supersonic Ramjet Powered Vehicle, Jonathan C. Cox

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the possibility of utilizing a Triggered Isomer Heat Exchanger (TIHE) within a ramjet engine to power a supersonic Conventional Air Launched Cruise Missile (CALCM). A computational ramjet engine was created using engine analysis software. This model was then run through a simulated cruise missile mission using AEDsys, a mission analysis and engine performance software suite. The replacement of the combustor with a TIHE led to an impressive range increase for the supersonic cruise missile.

Aeroelastic Analysis Of A Joined-Wing Sensorcraft, Jennifer J. Sitz Jun 2004

Aeroelastic Analysis Of A Joined-Wing Sensorcraft, Jennifer J. Sitz

Theses and Dissertations

This study performed an aeroelastic analysis of a joined-wing SensorCraft. The analysis was completed using an aluminum structural model that was splined to an aerodynamic panel model. The force and pressure distributions were examined for the four aerodynamic panels: aft wing, fore wing, joint, and outboard tip. Both distributions provide the expected results (elliptical distribution), with the exception of the fore wing. The fore wing appears to be affected by interference with the joint. The use of control surfaces for lift and roll was analyzed. Control surfaces were effective throughout most of the flight profile, but may not be usable …

Target Recognition Using Late-Time Returns From Ultra-Wideband, Short-Pulse Radar, Kenneth J. Pascoe

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research is to develop algorithms that recognize targets by exploiting properties in the late-time resonance induced by ultra-wide band radar signals. A new variant of the Matrix Pencil Method algorithm is developed that identifies complex resonant frequencies present in the scattered signal. Kalman filters are developed to represent the dynamics of the signals scattered from several target types. The Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation algorithm uses the Kalman filters to recognize targets. The target recognition algorithm is shown to be successful in the presence of noise. The performance of the new algorithms is compared to that of …

Estimating Equatorial F-Region Daytime Vertical E X B Drift Velocities From Ground-Based Magnetometer Measurements In The Philippine Longitude Sector, Shauna M. Kinkela Jun 2004

Estimating Equatorial F-Region Daytime Vertical E X B Drift Velocities From Ground-Based Magnetometer Measurements In The Philippine Longitude Sector, Shauna M. Kinkela

Theses and Dissertations

Ionospheric disturbances can severely impact Department of Defense (DoD) systems, such as radar. satellite. and navigation technologies. Forecasting disturbances and describing the Earth's ionosphere, in turn, relies upon innovative computer-based models that gather input parameters from ground and space-borne observations and empirical models for ionospheric drivers. Equatorial E x B drift velocities are significant input parameters that go into many ionospheric models, because they help describe vertical plasma motions near the magnetic equator. Previous work by Anderson, et al 2002 has demonstrated the ability to derive Peruvian longitude sector, daytime vertical E x B drifts from ground-based magnetometer data. The …

Comparative Study On The Use Of Coherent Radar-Derived Electric Fields Vs. Statistical Electric Fields For The Initialization Of A High-Latitude Ionospheric Model, Christopher M. Hogue

Theses and Dissertations

The structure and time development of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system have significant impacts on the Air Force and its mission. Specifically, an accurate knowledge of ionospheric plasma densities is important for the operation of many Air Force systems. This research analyzes plasma density structure development through comparing two distinct electric field models. The two models compared here are a commonly used statistical model created by Heppner and Maynard 1987, and a more recently developed model using real-time coherent radar measurements from the SuperDARN radar network. Ionospheric simulations were run using Utah State University s Time-Dependent Ionospheric Model (TDIM) with the two …

Shock Tube Investigation Of Pressure And Ion Sensors Used In Pulse Detonation Engine Research, Robert J. Mcmillan Jun 2004

Shock Tube Investigation Of Pressure And Ion Sensors Used In Pulse Detonation Engine Research, Robert J. Mcmillan

Theses and Dissertations

Shock tubes utilize a difference in pressures between gases separated by a diaphragm to create a shock wave when the diaphragm ruptures. By using sensors of known spacing, the speed of the wave can be determined. The AFIT 2-inch shock tube was reassembled and tested to ensure proper and safe operation. A high-speed data acquisition system was configured to take data at 2 MS/s. This research showed that the Mach number of the shock waves produced in this shock tube fall within 7% of theoretical values at speeds under Mach 3 and within 9% at higher speeds. The peak velocity …

Extending The Aircraft Availability Model To A Constrained Depot Environment Using Activity-Based Costing And The Theory Of Constraints, Gerardo H. Acosta Voegeli Jun 2004

Extending The Aircraft Availability Model To A Constrained Depot Environment Using Activity-Based Costing And The Theory Of Constraints, Gerardo H. Acosta Voegeli

Theses and Dissertations

The Aircraft Availability Model (AAM) assists managers in the selection of an optimal list of items to repair in order to attain the best aircraft availability rate. The model considers procurement or repair costs for the components as if the costs were unit variable as a price, instead of a repair cost representing a mix of both fixed and variable cost. This research used the AAM in conjunction with Activity Based-Costing (ABC) and The Theory of Constraints (TOC) methodologies to investigate the relationships between price, product mix, Aircraft Availability (AA) and total cost. This approach explicitly recognizes that the Air …

Utilizing Near-Field Measurements To Characterize Far-Field Radar Signatures, John R. Watkins Jun 2004

Utilizing Near-Field Measurements To Characterize Far-Field Radar Signatures, John R. Watkins

Theses and Dissertations

The increased need for stealth aircraft requires an on-site Far-Field (FF) Radar Cross-Section (RCS) measurement process. Conducting these measurements in on-site Near-Field (NF) monostatic facilities results in significant savings for manufacturers and acquisition programs. However, NF measurements are not directly extended to a FF RCS. Therefore, a large target Near-Field to Far-Field Transformation (NFFFT) is needed for RCS measurements. One approach requires an Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) process to create accurate scattering maps. The focus of this work is the development of accurate NF scattering maps generated by a monostatic ISAR process. As a first look, the process is …

An Assessment Of Modern Methods For Rotor Track And Balance, Michael J. Renzi Jun 2004

An Assessment Of Modern Methods For Rotor Track And Balance, Michael J. Renzi

Theses and Dissertations

One routine maintenance item facing the helicopter industry today is the issue of rotor track and balance (RT&B). While the task of reducing vibrations is often overlooked as simply an unimportant maintenance concern, what should not be overlooked is the extensive amount of time and money committed by maintenance to smoothing an aircraft. If there were a way to make the process of rotor track and balance more efficient it would be a huge boost to the helicopter industry in both time and money. The first steps towards research into new and improved methods is to evaluate what is currently …
