Automatic Geometric Data Migration Throughout Views Of A Model Fidelity Family, Hans L. Soderquist Mar 2006

Automatic Geometric Data Migration Throughout Views Of A Model Fidelity Family, Hans L. Soderquist

Theses and Dissertations

Changes in geometric model parameters are constant throughout the design process. Each group in an organization needs different model information at varying times during the design process. As a result many different models of the same part or assembly arise for the needs and use of each group in each design phase (from conceptual design to full product definition). When one group makes changes to a model, those changes need to be reflected in all of the models which describe the product in all groups and design phases in order for those changes to be verified against all design criteria …

Medium Access Control And Networking Protocols For The Intra-Body Network, Eric Thomas Stucki Mar 2006

Medium Access Control And Networking Protocols For The Intra-Body Network, Eric Thomas Stucki

Theses and Dissertations

Biomedical applications offer an exciting growth opportunity for wireless sensor networks. However, radio frequency communication is problematic in hospital environments that are susceptible to interference in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. Also, RF is inherently insecure as eavesdroppers can easily pick up signals. The Intra-Body Network (IBNet) proposes a novel communication model for biomedical sensor networks. It seeks the convenience of wireless communication while avoiding interference and privacy concerns associated with RF. IBNet's solution is to utilize a subject's own body tissue as a transmission medium. Assuming that transmissions are contained within the body, IBNet solves otherwise complex …

Formal Mitigation Strategies For The Insider Threat: A Security Model And Risk Analysis Framework, Jonathan W. Butts Mar 2006

Formal Mitigation Strategies For The Insider Threat: A Security Model And Risk Analysis Framework, Jonathan W. Butts

Theses and Dissertations

The advancement of technology and reliance on information systems have fostered an environment of sharing and trust. The rapid growth and dependence on these systems, however, creates an increased risk associated with the insider threat. The insider threat is one of the most challenging problems facing the security of information systems because the insider already has capabilities within the system. Despite research efforts to prevent and detect insiders, organizations remain susceptible to this threat because of inadequate security policies and a willingness of some individuals to betray their organization. To investigate these issues, a formal security model and risk analysis …

Analysis Of Photoconductive Properties In Ge2Sb2Te5 (Gst) Chalcogenide Films For Applications In Novel Electronics, John R. V. Chezem

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigated the thermal phase-change properties in Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) chalcogenide-based films and determined the feasibility of coupling the GST with photosensitive DNA material for novel optical device applications. Modeling and testing of GST were researched with the approach that GST would react as a resistive mechanism through thermal manipulation. A test structure was fabricated with a 2-micronmeter MEMS fabrication process. GST material was deposited (by RF sputtering) on the surface of the test structures. The GST was analyzed primarily in the amorphous to crystalline transition states due to more distinct changes in the resistance …

Modeling Urban Warfare: Joint Semi-Automated Forces In Urban Resolve, Alexander B. Anastasiou

Theses and Dissertations

The United States military is performing operations in urban environments with increasing frequency. Current Department of Defense doctrine is poorly suited to train and equip today's warriors with the tools and experience necessary to fight and win in modern sprawling cities. In order to "close the gap," the U.S. Joint Forces Command's Joint Experimentation Directorate led an effort to run a massively distributed simulation of a synthetic urban environment utilizing human-in-the-loop operators called URBAN RESOLVE. The synthetic environment simulated the city of Jakarta with over 1,000,000 buildings and structures and over 120,000 civilian entities. A Red force retreated into the …

Methods For Aiding Height Determination In Pseudolite-Based Reference Systems Using Batch Least-Squares Estimation, John H. R. Amt Mar 2006

Methods For Aiding Height Determination In Pseudolite-Based Reference Systems Using Batch Least-Squares Estimation, John H. R. Amt

Theses and Dissertations

There are many situations in which GPS is either unable to provide the desired level of accuracy or is unavailable. Use of a pseudolite-based reference system for navigation can be a means for positioning during these times. While there are advantages in using a pseudolite-based reference system, there are still implementation issues and deficiencies that must be addressed. In many cases, a pseudolite system with ground-based transmitters has difficulty determining the height of the receiver accurately. This is due to the poor vertical observability inherent in the geometry of the system. A common approach in naval applications for solving the …

A Comparative Usability And End-User Satisfaction Analysis Of Two Geographic Information System (Gis) Applications, Mark E. Barner Mar 2006

A Comparative Usability And End-User Satisfaction Analysis Of Two Geographic Information System (Gis) Applications, Mark E. Barner

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force has recognized that organizations across Air Force installations often require geospatial information resources or maps to accomplish mission essential tasks. To provide an AF-wide approach to addressing this need, in 2001, the Headquarters Air Force Geo Integration Office formed the USAF GeoBase program. GeoBase is the name given to the Air Force's GIS program. As GeoBase has been implemented across the Air Force, there have been no mandated product standards for GIS applications. This thesis focuses on two different GIS applications being used across the CE community for the management of airfield obstructions. These two applications are …

Nonlinear Suppression Of Range-Ambiguous Clutter For Outdoor Radar Measurement Facilities, Michael C. Baumgartner Mar 2006

Nonlinear Suppression Of Range-Ambiguous Clutter For Outdoor Radar Measurement Facilities, Michael C. Baumgartner

Theses and Dissertations

In the outdoor measurement facility, a certain amount of real estate is owned by the organization, and therefore can be groomed to keep clutter contributions to a minimum. As the transmit signal travels further down range, however, returns from long-range clutter sources are inevitable and can have a significant impact on measurement accuracy. This research effort investigates the effectiveness of employing nonlinear suppression (NLS) to abate long-range ambiguous clutter in these facilities. Initial testing provides an extended proof-of-concept for coincident point scatterers representing target and clutter sources. The NLS process is finally applied to simulated measured data from the National …

Free Flight Store Simulation Using Beggar, Judson T. Babcock Mar 2006

Free Flight Store Simulation Using Beggar, Judson T. Babcock

Theses and Dissertations

The complete numerical solution of the airflow around a store in extended free flight is of particular importance to the United States Air Force. Beggar is the primary Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program used by the USAF to obtain solutions for store separations. However, Beggar's ability to simulate a store in free flight is limited because the store must fall through a static background mesh, eventually reaching a point where the solution will fail. The length of any free flight simulation is consequently limited by the height of the background mesh. Code modifications are made to Beggar to remove this …

Investigation Of Frequency-Domain And Time-Domain Free-Space Material Measurements, Kirt J. Cassell Mar 2006

Investigation Of Frequency-Domain And Time-Domain Free-Space Material Measurements, Kirt J. Cassell

Theses and Dissertations

Electromagnetic material characterization is the process of determining the complex permittivity and permeability of a test sample. The primary goal of this thesis is to develop a new two-transmission material measurement method to decrease the error associated with using a reflection measurement. The transmission method uses a sample transmission measurement and an acrylic-backed sample transmission measurement. This technique is first demonstrated in a rectangular waveguide system then extended to frequency-domain and time-domain focus arch free-space systems. The frequency-domain free-space calibration process decreases accuracy at the band edges. The use of a digital oscilloscope with a time-domain reflectometer (TDR) module should …

Image Processing Resource Allocation Methods For Multi-Target Tracking Of Dismounted Targets In Urban Environments, Jonathan P. Champion Mar 2006

Image Processing Resource Allocation Methods For Multi-Target Tracking Of Dismounted Targets In Urban Environments, Jonathan P. Champion

Theses and Dissertations

Dismounted targets can be tracked in urban environments with video sensors. Real-time systems are unable to process all of the imagery, demanding some method for prioritization of the processing resources. Furthermore, various segmentation algorithms exist within image processing, each algorithm possesses unique capabilities, and each algorithm has an associated computational cost. Additional complexity arises in the prioritization problem when targets become occluded (e.g., by a building) and when the targets are intermixed with other dismounted entities. This added complexity leads to the question "which portions of the scene warrant both low cost and high cost processing?" The approach presented in …

Characterization Of Functionally Graded Materials, Benjamin D. Chapman Mar 2006

Characterization Of Functionally Graded Materials, Benjamin D. Chapman

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to characterize the behavior of a functionally graded material through experimentation and analytical modeling. Functionally graded materials are a ceramic metal composite which transitions from metal on one face to ceramic on the opposite face. Creating reliable models required verifying the material properties. This was accomplished through the use of a static modulus of elasticity test as well as a dynamic ping test. The natural frequencies from the dynamic test were compared with finite element models to determine which material properties most accurately represented the functionally graded material. It was found that the material …

Improving Maintenance Data Collection Via Point-Of-Maintenance (Pomx) Implementation, William D. Cone Mar 2006

Improving Maintenance Data Collection Via Point-Of-Maintenance (Pomx) Implementation, William D. Cone

Theses and Dissertations

Maintenance data collection is an integral part of flightline aircraft maintenance. Historically, this data was input via traditional keyboard data entry methods at a computer terminal. These terminals are typically located in the aircraft maintenance unit (AMU) facility, away from where the actual maintenance is being performed. In contrast to the traditional approach, the Point-of-Maintenance system (POMX) seeks to reduce the data entry burden while increasing data accuracy through the use of E-Tools such as ruggedized laptop computers and handheld portable maintenance aids (PMAs). POMX enables data entry at the aircraft or other maintenance location via wireless local area network …

Estimating Required Contingency Funds For Construction Projects Using Multiple Linear Regression, Jason J. Cook Mar 2006

Estimating Required Contingency Funds For Construction Projects Using Multiple Linear Regression, Jason J. Cook

Theses and Dissertations

Cost overruns are a critical problem for construction projects. The common practice for dealing with cost overruns is the assignment of an arbitrary flat percentage of the construction budget as a contingency fund. This research seeks to identify significant factors that may influence, or serve as indicators of, potential cost overruns. The study uses data on 243 construction projects over a full range of project types and scopes gathered from an existing United States Air Force construction database. The author uses multiple linear regression to analyze the data and compares the proposed model to the common practice of assigning contingency …

Characterizing The Impact Of Precision Time And Range Measurements From Two-Way Time Transfer Systems On Network Differential Gps Position Solutions, Kendra L. B. Cook

Theses and Dissertations

Precise positioning plays an important role for both military and civilian users, from cell phones and OnStar to precision munitions and swarms of UAVs. Many applications require precise relative positioning of a network of vehicles (such as aircraft, tanks, troops, etc). Currently, the primary means for performing precise positioning is by using the Global Positioning System (GPS), and although GPS has become commonplace in today’s society, there are still limitations affecting the system. Recent advances in dynamic Two-Way Time Transfer (TWTT) have potentially provided a means to improve precise relative positioning accuracy over differential GPS (DGPS)-only approaches. TWTT is a …

Passive Ranging Using Atmospheric Oxygen Absorption Spectra, Michael R. Hawks Mar 2006

Passive Ranging Using Atmospheric Oxygen Absorption Spectra, Michael R. Hawks

Theses and Dissertations

The depth of absorption bands in observed spectra of distant, bright sources can be used to estimate range to the source. A novel approach is presented and demonstrated using observations of the oxygen absorption band near 762 nm. Range is estimated by comparing observed values of band-average absorption against curves derived from either historical data or model predictions. Curves are based on fitting a random band model to the data, which reduces average range error by 67% compared to the Beer's Law model used in previous work. A new modification to existing band models for long, inhomogeneous paths is presented …

Spatially-Resolved Temperature Diagnostic For Supersonic Flow Using Cross-Beam Doppler-Limited Laser Saturation Spectroscopy, Grady T. Phillips Mar 2006

Spatially-Resolved Temperature Diagnostic For Supersonic Flow Using Cross-Beam Doppler-Limited Laser Saturation Spectroscopy, Grady T. Phillips

Theses and Dissertations

Optical techniques for measuring the temperature in three-dimensional supersonic reactive flows have typically depended on lineshape measurements using single-beam laser absorption spectroscopy. However, absorption over extended path lengths in flows with symmetric, turbulent eddies can lead to systematically high extracted temperatures due to Doppler shifts resulting from flow along the absorption path. To eliminate these problems, Cross-Beam Saturation Absorption Spectroscopy (CBSAS) and Cross-Beam Inter-Modulated Fluorescence (CBIMF) have been developed which utilize two crossed and nearly copropogating laser beams.to record the spectral signal of an I2 ro-vibrational line in a small three-dimensional volume using a tunable CW dye laser. Temperature …

Quantitative Object Reconstruction Using Abel Transform Tomography And Mixed Variable Optimization, Kevin R. O'Reilly Mar 2006

Quantitative Object Reconstruction Using Abel Transform Tomography And Mixed Variable Optimization, Kevin R. O'Reilly

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are interested in quantitatively reconstructing an object using Abel transform x-ray tomography. Specifically, they obtain a radiograph by x-raying an object and attempt to quantitatively determine the number and types of materials and the thicknesses of each material layer. Their current methodologies either fail to provide a quantitative description of the object or are generally too slow to be useful in practice. As an alternative, the problem is modeled here as a mixed variable programming (MVP) problem, in which some variables are nonnumeric and for which no derivative information is available. The …

An Adaptable Energy-Efficient Medium Access Control Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Justin T. Kautz Mar 2006

An Adaptable Energy-Efficient Medium Access Control Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Justin T. Kautz

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless networks have become ubiquitous recently and therefore their usefulness has also become more extensive. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) detect environmental information with sensors in remote settings. One problem facing WSNs is the inability to resupply power to these energy-constrained devices due to their remoteness. Therefore to extend a WSN's effectiveness, the lifetime of the network must be increased by making them as energy efficient as possible. An energy efficient medium access control (MAC) can boost a WSN's lifetime. This research creates a MAC protocol called Adaptive sensor Medium Access Control (AMAC) which is based on Sensor Medium Access Control …

Air Gap Error Compensation For Coaxial Transmission Line Method Of Electromagnetic Material Characterization, Ronald G. Fehlen Mar 2006

Theses and Dissertations

This research analyzes material characterization measurements from 50 Mhz to 3.05 GHz where an axially symmetric air gap exists between the sample material and the inner or outer conductor. Higher order fields are excited by the air gap and are accounted for through modal analysis methods. A root search minimizes the difference between the calculated scattering parameters from the modal method and the experimentally measured scattering parameters. The root is the permittivity and permeability of the material. This method is tested with a non-magnetic material and a heavily loaded magnetic material. An error analysis based on dimension measurement uncertainty is …

Forward-Looking Radar Clutter Suppression Using Frequency Diverse Arrays, Piotr Baizert Mar 2006

Forward-Looking Radar Clutter Suppression Using Frequency Diverse Arrays, Piotr Baizert

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces a new array structure, the Frequency Diverse Array (FDA), where each channel transmits and receives at a different frequency. The resulting range-dependent FDA antenna pattern is proposed to improve forward-looking clutter suppression. The planar FDA radar data model is derived and analytically verified to be equivalent to the constant frequency data model when each element frequency is set to the same value. The linear FDA at high platform altitude provides significant benefits? by reducing the range ambiguous clutter contribution, improving target detection by up to 10 dB. At low altitudes without range ambiguous clutter the linear FDA …
