Biomass And Coal Fly Ash In Concrete: Strength, Durability, Microstructure, Quantitative Kinetics Of Pozzolanic Reaction And Alkali Silica Reaction Investigations., Shuangzhen Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Biomass represents an important sustainable energy resource, with biomass-coal cofiring representing among the most effective and cost efficient CO2 reduction strategies. Fly ash generated during coal combustion represents a technically advantageous, inexpensive, and environmentally beneficial admixture in concrete production, partially replacing cement. However, strict interpretation of American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American Concrete Institute (ACI) standards prohibits use of fly ashes from any source other than coal in concrete production; therefore, fly ash from biomass coal cofiring is excluded from use in concrete. This dissertation discusses biomass impacts on concrete properties through experiments conducted on several combinations …
Finding Relevant Pdf Medical Journal Articles By The Content Of Their Figures As Well As Their Text, Ammon J. Christiansen
Finding Relevant Pdf Medical Journal Articles By The Content Of Their Figures As Well As Their Text, Ammon J. Christiansen
Theses and Dissertations
This work addresses the need for an alternative to keyword-based search for sifting through large PDF medical journal article document collections for literature review purposes. Despite users' best efforts to form precise and accurate queries, it is often difficult to guess the right keywords to find all the related articles while finding a minimum number of unrelated ones. Failure during literature review to find relevant, related research results in wasted research time and effort in addition to missing significant work in the related area which could affect the quality of the research work being conducted. The purpose of this work …
Panoramic Video For Efficient Ground Surveillance From Small Unmanned Air Vehicles, Joseph Aaron Jackson
Panoramic Video For Efficient Ground Surveillance From Small Unmanned Air Vehicles, Joseph Aaron Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
As unmanned air vehicle (UAV) utilization increases in Wilderness Search and Rescue (WiSAR) efforts, onboard sensors yielding more information will be desired. UAVs can assist WiSAR efforts by accelerating the ground search process through returning quality aerial footage of the terrain. Additionally, tracking the progress of a search by populating a digital map with video resolution data increases confidence that a comprehensive search of the region has been made. This thesis presents methods for acquiring video from multiple video sensors and fusing them into a single rendered video stream as a Virtual Gimbal. The panoramic video stream is the first …
Modeling Three Reacting Flow Systems With Modern Computational Fluid Dynamics, Ralph J. Price
Modeling Three Reacting Flow Systems With Modern Computational Fluid Dynamics, Ralph J. Price
Theses and Dissertations
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and analysis were used in three projects: solar CO2 conversion modeling, improved coal combustion modeling using STAR-CD, and premixed combustion modeling. Each project is described below. The solar CO2 conversion modeling project involved CFD simulations of a prototype solar CO2 converter that uses sunlight to dissociate CO2 into CO and O2. Modeling was used to predict the performance of this prototype converter using three CFD software packages, and involved predicting the flow, heat transfer, and chemical kinetics. Accuracy was determined by comparison of model predictions and experimental data. Parametric modeling studies were performed in order …
Applications Of Search Theory To Coordinated Searching By Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Steven R. Hansen
Applications Of Search Theory To Coordinated Searching By Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Steven R. Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Concepts in optimal search theory have been used in human-based aerial search since World War II. This thesis addresses the technical and theoretical issues necessary to apply this crucial theory to search path planning for Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (SUAVs). A typical search often requires that more than one target be located. Accordingly, a method is presented to locate multiple targets in three dimensions, as well as to differentiate between them. However, significant error can be present when locating targets from an airborne platform, and the idea of target quality is also introduced as a way to describe the reliability …
Optimizing Product Variant Placement To Satisfy Market Demand, Jonathan Roger Parkinson
Optimizing Product Variant Placement To Satisfy Market Demand, Jonathan Roger Parkinson
Theses and Dissertations
Many companies use product families in order to offer product variants that appeal to different market segments while minimizing costs. Because the market demand is generally not uniform for all possible product variants, during the design phase a decision must be made as to which variants will be offered and how many. This thesis presents a new approach to solving this problem. The product is defined in terms of performance parameters. The market demand is captured in a preference model and applied to these parameters in order to represent the total potential market. The number and placement of the product …

Cfd Investigation Of Flow Past Idealized Engine Nacelle Clutter /// Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation Of Flow Past Idealized Engine Nacelle Clutter, Matthew S. Caspers
Theses and Dissertations
This research modeled low-speed flow past idealized engine nacelle clutter in support of aircraft re suppression research. The idealized clutter was comprised of three vertical rows of staggered circular cylinders approximating typical nacelle obstructions such as fuel lines and wire bundles. Single-phase, Detached-Eddy Simulations (DES) were conducted using the commercial CFD solver, Fluent™, to resolve the flow-field dynamics inside the clutter element and determine mechanisms accounting for the failure of suppressant spray droplets from traversing the array under low-speed, free-stream conditions (ReD = 1, 575). The numerical models provided no evidence that span-wise vorticity or non-uniform shedding was responsible for …
Comparison Of Thermodynamic Equilibrium And Non-Equilibrium Representation Of Materials, Michael J. Vanderhyde
Comparison Of Thermodynamic Equilibrium And Non-Equilibrium Representation Of Materials, Michael J. Vanderhyde
Theses and Dissertations
Hydrocodes are valuable tools in the modeling of shock wave propagation through solids due to high speed impact phenomena. CTH is a hydrocode built with the ability to use multiple EOSs, including the semi-emperical Mie-Gruneisen EOS and tabular Sesame EOS. Modeling high speed impacts necessitates modeling the non-equilibrium thermodynamic states caused by these impacts. A discussion of the non-equilibrium thermodynamics that may be applied to the region directly behind a shock wave is presented, including details of recent attempts to model non-equilibrium impact phenomena in solids. Also, in order to better determine the applicability of the Mie-Gruneisen EOS anbd the …
Satellite Attitude Control Using Atmopheric Drag, David B. Guettler
Satellite Attitude Control Using Atmopheric Drag, David B. Guettler
Theses and Dissertations
Attitude control is a requirement for most satellites. Many schemes have been devised over the years including control moment gyros, reaction wheels, spin stabilization and gravity gradient stabilization. For low Earth orbits, the Earth's atmosphere can have an affect on a satellite's orbit and attitude. This research effort examines the feasibility of using the atmosphere to actively control a spacecraft's attitude using drag panels. Using the atmosphere to control spacecraft attitude has been researched in the past however very little research has been done using an active feedback control system to maintain spacecraft attitude. A linear computer model was created …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the research was to design, build, test, and recommend a process to economically separate CO from a gas mixture of CO, CO2, and O2. The general method considered in this research to accomplish the separation was liquid absorption in a packed column. Several experiments were performed to identify the best process solution to use in a prototype. The experiments, based on the COSORB process, consisted of CuCl mixed with a complexing agent (metal tri-chloride) and a solvent (metal tetra-chloride, toluene, ethanol, etc.). The best method consisted of an aqueous solution of CuCl and MgCl2, which has previously …
Fuel Estimation Using Dynamic Response, Michael S. Hines
Fuel Estimation Using Dynamic Response, Michael S. Hines
Theses and Dissertations
New regulations governing satellites in geostationary orbit require satellites to transfer into a parking orbit as part of the decommissioning process. These regulations increase the demand for accurate fuel estimation techniques for satellites. This study estimates the change in fuel mass from the dynamic response of the Air Force Institute of Technology's simulated satellite (SimSAT) to known control inputs. With an iterative process, the moment of inertia of SimSAT about the yaw axis was estimated by matching a model of SimSAT to the measured angular rates. A change in fuel mass was then estimated from the known relation between the …
Feasibility Study Of Variance Reduction In The Logistics Composite Model, George P. Cole Iii
Feasibility Study Of Variance Reduction In The Logistics Composite Model, George P. Cole Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The Logistics Composite Model (LCOM) is a stochastic, discrete-event simulation that relies on probabilities and random number generators to model scenarios in a maintenance unit and estimate optimal manpower levels through an iterative process. Models such as LCOM involving pseudo-random numbers inevitably have a variance associated with the output of the model for each run, and the output is actually a range of estimates. The reduction of the variance in the results of the model can be costly in the form of time for multiple replications. The alternative is a range of estimates that is too wide to realistically apply …

Theses and Dissertations
Acoustic Physical Modeling has emerged as a newer musical synthesis technique. The most common form of physical modeling synthesis in both industry and academia is digital waveguide synthesis. Commercially available for the past thirteen years, the top synthesizer manufacturers have chosen to include physical modeling synthesis in their top of the line models. In the area of audio quality testing, the most common tests have traditionally been group listening tests. While these tests are subjective and can be expensive and time-consuming, the results are validated by the groups' proper quality standards. Research has been conducted to evaluate objective testing procedures …
An Evaluation Of American Companies That Outsource Manufacturing To China: Decision-Making And Performance, Michael Kenyon Favreau
An Evaluation Of American Companies That Outsource Manufacturing To China: Decision-Making And Performance, Michael Kenyon Favreau
Theses and Dissertations
The topic of outsourcing ranks at the top of business issues for a wide variety of companies (Wery, 2004; Ezrati, 2004). The majority of American companies believe that offshore-related matters rank as the most strategic decisions that management is expected to make in the next 12 months (Wery, 2004). “Outsourcing in China can help many companies save money, but it can be very frustrating if not done right" (Ting, 2004). The perceived benefits of outsourcing production to China are tremendously enticing, but a lack of understanding of the total costs involved lures many companies into outsourcing when it is not …
Particle Size, Gas Temperature, And Impingement Cooling Effects On High Pressure Turbine Deposition In Land Based Gas Turbines From Various Synfuels, Jared M. Crosby
Particle Size, Gas Temperature, And Impingement Cooling Effects On High Pressure Turbine Deposition In Land Based Gas Turbines From Various Synfuels, Jared M. Crosby
Theses and Dissertations
Four series of tests were performed in an accelerated deposition test facility to study the independent effects of particle size, gas temperature, and metal temperature on ash deposits from two candidate power turbine synfuels. The facility matches the gas temperature and velocity of modern first stage high pressure turbine vanes while accelerating the deposition process. This is done by matching the net throughput of particulate out of the combustor with that experienced by a modern power turbine. In the first series of tests, four different size particles were studied by seeding a natural-gas combustor with finely-ground coal ash particulate. The …
Rectification Of 2-D To 3-D Finite Element Analysis In Buried Concrete Arches Under Discrete Loading, Adam D. Aagard
Rectification Of 2-D To 3-D Finite Element Analysis In Buried Concrete Arches Under Discrete Loading, Adam D. Aagard
Theses and Dissertations
Construction of tunnels and small- to medium-span bridges is a $12 billion per year industry in the United States, with a significant portion going into buried arch structures. Notwithstanding such expenditure, modern arch design and construction, in many cases, is highly conservative. This is because the closed-form solutions used by most designers today do not correctly account for soil-structure interaction. In fact, soil-structure interaction makes a closed form solution impossible. With the advent of high power computers in recent years, some designers have turned to finite element (FE)modeling as the main vehicle of analysis. Such numerical procedures provide an accurate …

Lifetime Testing Of Wire-Grid Polarizers With Selected Over-Coatings, Steven J. Malone
Theses and Dissertations
Wire-grid polarizers (WGPs) offer superior extinction, durability, angle of incidence, and heat resistance when compared to traditional organic polarizers. WGPs are found in applications such as high lumen lighting, laser devices, high lumen digital cinema projectors, LED packaging, and other integrated optical applications and are driving the need for over-coatings. Over-coating a WGP has been found to increase lifetime and durability. This research provides lifetime data on coated and uncoated WGPs. WGPs over-coated with 100nm of SiO2, 300nm of MgF2, and with no over-coating were heated to temperatures of 450 ºC, 500 ºC, and 550 ºC and timed until they …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to determine which aspects, other than price, of trade contractor performance are the most important to the general contractor, Big-D Construction. The impression a trade contractor leaves on the project manager and superintendent provides an indication of their performance. To determine what tasks trade contractors perform that most greatly impact overall perception of the general contractor's project manager and superintendent, hundreds of trade contractors were evaluated in ten separate categories and were then given an overall rating. The correlation between each category and the overall rating was found. The categories were then sorted from …
The Effects Of Vortex Generator Jet Frequency, Duty Cycle, And Phase On Separation Bubble Dynamics, Matthew J. Bloxham
The Effects Of Vortex Generator Jet Frequency, Duty Cycle, And Phase On Separation Bubble Dynamics, Matthew J. Bloxham
Theses and Dissertations
Vortex generator jets (VGJs) have proven to be effective in minimizing the separation losses on low-pressure turbine blades at low Reynolds numbers. Experimental data collected using phase-locked particle image velocimetry and substantiated with a hot-film anemometer were used to answer fundamental questions about the influence of VGJs on a separated boundary layer. The data were collected on the suction surface of the Pack B blade profile, which has a non-reattaching separation bubble beginning at 68% axial chord. Two VGJ pulse histories were created with different frequencies, jet durations, and duty cycles. The mechanisms responsible for boundary layer separation control were …
A Layered Social And Operational Network Analysis, Jennifer L. Geffre
A Layered Social And Operational Network Analysis, Jennifer L. Geffre
Theses and Dissertations
To provide maximal disruption to a clandestine/terrorist network's ability to conduct missions, we must develop a means to determine the individuals' importance to the network and operations. In a network centric world, this importance is represented as an additive value of their criticality across the convergence of multiple layers of network connections. The connections layers of the network are comprised of social layers (Acquaintance, Friendship, Nuclear Family, Relatives, Student-Teacher, and Religious Mentors, Reverent Power and others), as well as layers representing interactions involving Resources, Knowledge/Skills and Temporal Local. The social criticality of an individual is measured by centrality. Event Trees …

A Multireference Density Functional Approach To The Calculation Of The Excited States Of Uranium Ions, Eric V. Beck
Theses and Dissertations
An accurate and efficient hybrid Density Functional Theory (DFT)/Multireference Configuration Interaction (MRCI) model for computing electronic excitation energies in heavy element atoms and molecules was developed. This model incorporated relativistic effects essential for accurate qualitative and quantitative spectroscopic predictions on heavy elements, while simultaneously removing spin-multiplicity limitations inherent in the original model on which it is based. This model was used to successfully compute ground and low-lying electronic states for atoms in the first two rows of the period table, which were used for calibration. Once calibrated, calculations on carbon monoxide, bromine fluoride, the bromine atom, uranium +4 and +5 …

Characterizing The Frictional Interface In Friction Stir Welding, Daryl A. Stratton
Characterizing The Frictional Interface In Friction Stir Welding, Daryl A. Stratton
Theses and Dissertations
Quantitative understanding of frictional phenomena between the tool and the workpiece is essential for accurate modeling of the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process. Two methods of measuring the tool-workpiece interface are proposed that allow frictional measurements to be made under extreme conditions. The first method uses a cylindrically curved surface in contact with a flat plate. The ranges of temperature, velocity, and normal force used in this method are 100–600°C, 0.38–2.0 m/s (75–400) surface feet per minute (SFM)), and 450–2700 N (100–600 lbf), respectively. Data are gathered at different parameter level combinations to provide enough data to create an empirical …
Rapid Runway Repair (Rrr): An Optimization For Minimum Operating Strip (Mos) Selection, David J. Duncan
Rapid Runway Repair (Rrr): An Optimization For Minimum Operating Strip (Mos) Selection, David J. Duncan
Theses and Dissertations
Minimum Operating Strip (MOS) selection determines the exact placement of the MOS on the damaged runway, and therefore, the amount of munitions that need to be neutralized and the amount of damage that will need to be repaired. MOS selection, in essence, is the key determinant of the time required to attain an operational takeoff and recovery surface. Since the MOS selection stage determines the events and scope of work for all of the Rapid Runway Repair (RRR) stages that follow, it could be argued that this is the most important stage in the entire RRR process. The primary purpose …
A Multivariate Magnitude Robust Control Chart For Mean Shift Detection And Change Point Estimation, Ryan M. Harrell
A Multivariate Magnitude Robust Control Chart For Mean Shift Detection And Change Point Estimation, Ryan M. Harrell
Theses and Dissertations
Statistical control charts are often used to detect a change in an otherwise stable process. This process may contain several variables affecting process stability. The goal of any control chart is to detect an out-of-control state quickly and provide insight on when the process actually changed. This reduces the off-line time the quality engineer spends assigning causality. In this research, a multivariate magnitude robust chart (MMRC) was developed using a change point model and a likelihood-ratio approach. Here the process is considered in-control until one or more normally distributed process variables permanently and suddenly shifts to out-of-control, stable value. Using …
