Cryogenic Carbon Capture Using A Desublimating Spray Tower, Bradley J. Nielson Jul 2013

Cryogenic Carbon Capture Using A Desublimating Spray Tower, Bradley J. Nielson

Theses and Dissertations

Global warming is becoming ever increasing concern in our society. As such the likelihood of a carbon tax in the US is becoming increasingly likely. A carbon tax will be expensive enough that coal-based power plants will either have to install carbon capture technology or close. The two front runner technologies for carbon capture are amine scrubbing, and oxyfuel combustion. The downside is that both of these technologies increase power generation cost in a new plant by about 80% and have up to a 30% parasitic load, which reduces the cycle efficiency, that is, the power production per unit fuel …

The Effect Of Carbon Additives On The Microstructure And Performance Of Alkaline Battery Cathodes, Douglas Robert Nevers

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes research to understand the relationships between materials, microstructure, transport processes, and battery performance for primary alkaline battery cathodes. Specifically, the effect of various carbon additives, with different physical properties, on electronic transport or conductivity within battery cathodes was investigated. Generally, the electronic conductivity increases with carbon additives that have higher aspect ratios, smaller particle diameters, higher surface areas, and lower bulk densities. Other favorable carbon aspects include more aggregated and elongated carbon domains which permit good particleto-particle contacts. Of the various carbon additives investigated, graphene nanopowder was the best performer. This graphene nanopowder had the smallest particle …

Dynamics And Control Of Wrist And Forearm Movements, Allan W. Peaden Jul 2013

Dynamics And Control Of Wrist And Forearm Movements, Allan W. Peaden

Theses and Dissertations

Wrist and forearm motion is governed both by its dynamics and the control strategies employed by the neuromuscular system to execute goal oriented movement. Two experiments were conducted to increase our understanding of wrist and forearm motion. The first experiment involved 10 healthy subjects executing planned movements to targets involving all three degrees of freedom (DOF) of the wrist and forearm, namely wrist flexion-extension (FE), wrist radial-ulnar deviation, and forearm pronation-supination (PS). A model of wrist and forearm dynamics was developed, and the recorded movements were fed into the model to analyze the movement torques. This resulted in the following …

A Study Of Action Origami As Systems Of Spherical Mechanisms, Landen A. Bowen Jul 2013

A Study Of Action Origami As Systems Of Spherical Mechanisms, Landen A. Bowen

Theses and Dissertations

Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, has been used previously to inspire engineering solutions for compact, deployable designs. Action origami, the subset of origami dealing with models designed to move, is a previously unexplored area for engineering design solutions that are deployable and have additional motion in the deployed state. A literature review of origami in engineering is performed, resulting in seven key areas of technical origami literature from a wide variety of disciplines. Spherical mechanisms are identified as the method by which most action origami models achieve complicated motion while remaining flat-foldable. The subset of action origami whose …

Capillary Filling Of Large Aspect Ratio Channels With Varying Wall Spacing, Dallin B. Murray Jul 2013

Capillary Filling Of Large Aspect Ratio Channels With Varying Wall Spacing, Dallin B. Murray

Theses and Dissertations

Quantification and prediction of capillary fluid flow in planar nanochannels is essential to the development of many emerging nanofluidic technologies. Planar nanochannels are typically produced using the standard nanofabrication processes of thermal bonding or sacrificial etching. Both approaches may yield nanochannels that are bowed and/or exhibit non-uniform (i.e. non-planar) wall spacing. These variations in wall spacing affect the transient dynamics of a liquid plug filling the nanochannel, causing deviations from the classical behavior in a parallel-plate channel as described by the Washburn model. Non uniform wall spacing impacts the overall frictional resistance and influences the meniscus curvature. In this thesis, …

Experiments With Gmti Radar Using Micro-Doppler, Benjamin Walter Dilsaver Jun 2013

Experiments With Gmti Radar Using Micro-Doppler, Benjamin Walter Dilsaver

Theses and Dissertations

As objects move, their changing shape produces a signature that can be measured by a radar system. That signature is called the micro-Doppler signature. The micro-Doppler signature of an object is a distinguishing characteristic for certain classes of objects. In this thesis features are extracted from the micro-Doppler signature and are used to classify objects. The scope of the objects is limited to humans walking and traveling vehicles. The micro-Doppler features are able to distinguish the two classes of objects. With a sufficient amount of training data, the micro-Doppler features may be used with learning algorithms to predict unknown objects …

This work presents novel research in three areas regarding time-domain backprojection. The first key contribution of this work is a detailed analysis of SAR time-domain backprojection. The work derives a general form of backprojection from first principles. It characterizes the sensitivities of backprojection …

Subthreshold Op Amp Design Based On The Conventional Cascode Stage, Kurtis Daniel Cahill Jun 2013

Subthreshold Op Amp Design Based On The Conventional Cascode Stage, Kurtis Daniel Cahill

Theses and Dissertations

Op amps are among the most-used components in electronic design. Their performance is important and is often measured in terms of gain, bandwidth, power consumption, and chip area. Although BJT amplifiers can achieve high gains and bandwidths, they tend to consume a lot of power. CMOS amplifiers utilizing the strong inversion region alone use less power than BJT amplifiers, but generally have lower gains and bandwidths. When CMOS SPICE models were improved to accurately simulate all regions of inversion, researchers began to test the performance of amplifiers operating in the weak and moderate inversion regions. Previous work had dealt with …

Applied Hypergame Theory For Network Defense, Alan S. Gibson Jun 2013

Applied Hypergame Theory For Network Defense, Alan S. Gibson

Theses and Dissertations

Cyber operations are the most important aspect of military conflicts in the 21st century, but unfortunately they are also among the least understood. The continual battle for network dominance between attackers and defenders is considered to be a complex game. Hypergame theory is an extension of game theory that addresses the kind of games where misperception exists, as is often the case in military engagements. Hypergame theory, like game theory, uses a game model to determine strategy selection, but goes beyond game theory by examining subgames that exist within the full game. The inclusion of misperception and misinformation in the …

Side-Channel Analysis Of Subscriber Identity Modules, John A. Hearle Jun 2013

Side-Channel Analysis Of Subscriber Identity Modules, John A. Hearle

Theses and Dissertations

Subscriber identity modules (SIMs) contain useful forensic data but are often locked with a PIN code that restricts access to this data. If an invalid PIN is entered several times, the card locks and may even destroy its stored data. This presents a challenge to the retrieval of data from the SIM when the PIN is unknown. The field of side-channel analysis (SCA) collects, identifies, and processes information leaked via inadvertent channels. One promising side-channel leakage is that of electromagnetic (EM) emanations; by monitoring the SIM's emissions, it may be possible to determine the correct PIN to unlock the card. …

Dynamic Network Topologies, Heather A. Lingg Jun 2013

Continuous output is used in this research …

The Design And Analysis Of Electrically Large Custom-Shaped Reflector Antennas, Joshua M. Wilson Jun 2013

The Design And Analysis Of Electrically Large Custom-Shaped Reflector Antennas, Joshua M. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Designing and analyzing electrically large reflectors poses numerically complex problems because the reflector must be sampled finely to obtain an accurate solution, causing an unwieldy number of samples. In addition to these complexities, a custom-shaped reflector poses a new analysis problem. Previously developed methods and theorems including Geometric Optics, Ray-Tracing, Surface Equivalence Theorems, Image Theory, and Physical Optics can be applied to these custom-shaped reflectors however. These methods all share in common their capability to provide accurate results in the analysis of electrically large structures. In this thesis, two custom-shaped reflector concepts are explored which include a rectangular shaped, spherically …

Theses and Dissertations

Space debris remains an unsolved hazard for space operators and astronomers alike. Passive debris mitigation techniques have been enumerated and codified by the UNCOPUOS and IADC and several proposals for actively mitigating space debris have been presented. However, the space debris problem requires reframing. On the way to developing a viable CONOPS, a multi-disciplinary construct for building solution sets to tackle the space debris problem must be created. It must be shaped by building blocks of active and passive debris mitigation techniques, debris characterization and law. Central considerations must be taken. First, targeting of space debris for removal must be …

The research that stems from my doctoral dissertation focuses on addressing essential challenges in developing techniques that utilize solid-state memory technologies (with emphasis on NAND flash memory) from device, circuit, architecture, and system perspectives in order to exploit their true potential for improving I/O performance in high-performance computing systems. These challenges include not only the performance quirks arising from the physical nature of NAND flash memory, e.g., the inability to modify data in-place, read/write performance asymmetry, and slow and constrained erase functionality, but also the reliability drawbacks that limits solid state drives (SSDs) from widely deployed. To address these challenges, …

Application Of One Dimensional Turbulence (Odt) To Model Fire Spread Through Biomass Fuel Bed, Abinash Paudel Jun 2013

Application Of One Dimensional Turbulence (Odt) To Model Fire Spread Through Biomass Fuel Bed, Abinash Paudel

Theses and Dissertations

Each year fires destroy millions of acres of woodland, lives, and property, and significantly contribute to air pollution. Increased knowledge of the physics and properties of the flame propagation is necessary to broaden the fundamental understanding and modeling capabilities of fires. Modeling flame propagation in fires is challenging because of the various modes of heat transfer with diverse fuels, multi-scale turbulence, and complex chemical kinetics. Standard physical models of turbulence like RANS and LES have been used to understand the flame behavior, but these models are limited by computational cost and their inability to resolve sub-grid scales. Application of several …

The Effects Of Mismatches And Probe Tethering Configurations On The Stability Of Dna Duplexes On Surfaces, Kyle Evan Pratt

Theses and Dissertations

DNA microarrays are chip-based, analysis tools which can perform hundreds of thousands of parallel assays to determine the identity of genes or gene expression levels present in a sample. They have been identified as a key technology in genomic sciences and emergent medical techniques; however, despite their abundant use in research laboratories, microarrays have not been used in the clinical setting to the fullest potential due to the difficulty of obtaining reproducible results. Microarrays work on the principle of DNA hybridization, and can only be as accurate as this process is robust. Fundamental, molecular-level understanding of hybridization on surfaces is …

Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide)-Based Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Pamela Kubinski Jun 2013

Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide)-Based Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Pamela Kubinski

Theses and Dissertations

The primary goal of this work is to investigate the potential of poly(Nisopropylacrylamide)- based scaffolds in tissue engineering applications, specifically spinal injury and nucleus pulposus replacement. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), denoted PNIPAAm, is a synthetic polymer with hydrophilic properties at room temperature, but above 32C the chains become hydrophobic and entangle to form physical crosslinks. This thermoresponsive property enables PNIPAAm to be implanted as a free-flowing solution at room temperature and collapse into a gel in physiological conditions. However, as a homopolymer, the hydrophobicity of PNIPAAm in vivo causes the hydrogel to expel water and exhibit inelastic properties that do not mimic those …
