This dissertation has been designed targeting the lattice matched AlInN/GaN investigation with very detail to optimize the design, fabrication process, and electronic properties to realize AlInN/GaN HEMTs. Each single step of this process was optimized in order to improve device performance.

The work started with establishing the main features …

Engineered 3d Microenvironments To Direct Osteogenic Differentiation And Modulate Inflammation, Katherine Elizabeth Rutledge Jan 2015

Engineered 3d Microenvironments To Direct Osteogenic Differentiation And Modulate Inflammation, Katherine Elizabeth Rutledge

Theses and Dissertations

Current methods of treating critical size bone defects (CSDs) include autografts and allografts, however both present major limitations including donor-site morbidity, risk of disease transmission, and immune-rejection. Tissue engineering provides a promising alternative to circumvent these shortcomings through the use of stem cells, three dimensional (3D) scaffolds, and growth factors. Cells receive signals from their microenvironment that determine cell phenotype, and a combination of physical cues and chemical factors is thought to have the most profound influence on stem cell behavior. A major focus of tissue engineering strategies is scaffold design to recapitulate in vivo microenvironmental architecture to direct stem …

Predictive Methods For End Of Life Prognosis In Composites, Vamsee Vadlamudi Jan 2015

Predictive Methods For End Of Life Prognosis In Composites, Vamsee Vadlamudi

Theses and Dissertations

The long-term properties of continuous fiber reinforced composite materials are increasingly important as applications in airplanes, cars, and other safety critical structures are growing rapidly. The mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of composite materials are altered by the initiation and accumulation of discrete fracture events whose distribution and eventual interaction defines the limits of design, such as strength and life. There is a correlation that exists between the long term behavior of those materials under combined mechanical, thermal, and electrical fields, and the functional properties and characteristics of the composite materials that requires a fundamental understanding of the material state …

Theses and Dissertations

III-Nitride based deep ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs) emitting below 280nm has the potential to replace mercury lamps currently used in the systems for water/air purification, germicidal and medical instruments sterilization applications. However, this potential has not yet been fully realized as the output power, quantum efficiency and lifetime of deep UV-LEDs have been limited by the large number of dislocations in the active region of the devices, arising from the lattice mismatched sapphire substrate, which has been the substrate of choice due to its high transparency to deep UV radiation. To reduce dislocations in the active region of …

Adaptivity For Meshfree Point Collocation Methods In Linear Elastic Solid Mechanics, Joshua Wayne Derrick Jan 2015

Adaptivity For Meshfree Point Collocation Methods In Linear Elastic Solid Mechanics, Joshua Wayne Derrick

Theses and Dissertations

This study presents the behavior of local node adaptivity for point collocation meshfree numerical methods and its application to linear elastic solid mechanics. A bisection approach to meshfree adaptivity will be presented with numerical examples showing that convergence is achieved. A threshold value is required from the user and this value is an acceptable change in gradient for the problem. If the change in gradient between 2 nodes exceed this limit, a node is added at the mid-point between the two nodes. This process applies to all nodes in the model. Once the refinement is complete, the model is processed …

Transport, deposition and erosion of sediment particles differing in size, shape and density may result in particle segregation, which in geosciences applications is generally referred to as sediment sorting. A thorough understanding of sediment sorting processes is important to describe and model a wide variety of natural processes such as the decrease in particle size and/or density in a fluvial system (downstream fining and/or lightening), the formation of economic placers, concentration of heavy minerals, chemical and metal pollutants etc. Sorting of sediment grains associated with sediment transport in the streamwise direction results in the development of longitudinal sorting patterns. Vertical …

Development Of A Thickness Accommodation Technique For Origami-Inspired Design, Bryce Edmondson Jan 2015

Development Of A Thickness Accommodation Technique For Origami-Inspired Design, Bryce Edmondson

Theses and Dissertations

Designers are constantly searching for new sourcing of inspiration for innovative design. Recently, origami has gained interest as one of these potential sources. Origami literally translated from Japanese means “paper folding” where “oru” means “to fold” and “kami” means “paper”. Since paper is insufficient to solve many engineering design problems, designers must turn to other materials. These materials will inevitably be thicker than paper and will often require different folding techniques and considerations. This thesis provides background information describing previous methods to accommodate thickness in origami-inspired design, presents a newly developed technique to address limitations of other methods, and explores …

Material Considerations For Development Of 3d Printed Bronchial And Tracheal Stents, Nidah M. Hussain Jan 2015

Material Considerations For Development Of 3d Printed Bronchial And Tracheal Stents, Nidah M. Hussain

Theses and Dissertations

Tracheobronchial malacia is a commonly under-diagnosed condition that results in difficulty breathing. The use of a tracheobronchial stent is the best course of treatment for patients whose quality of life has deteriorated due to malacia; unfortunately stents need replacing after issues with inflammation, migration, or eventual stent-breakdown resulting in fistula formation.

The purpose of this thesis is to use three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to improve on existing stents through designing and printing a bioresorbable/biodegradable tracheobronchial stent that can treat tracheobronchial malacia. This was undertaken by testing three biologically favorable materials, type I collagen, polycaprolactone (PCL), and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), with …

Design And Development Of A Ventilation Chamber For Testing Efficacy Of Tracheal Stents, Caroline N. Horton

Theses and Dissertations

Tracheobronchial malacia results in a weakening of the tracheal walls, leading to increased difficulty breathing. Stents are used to reopen the lumen of the trachea, however, current models are not personalized to each patient, leading to migration, inflammation, and breakage of the stents. In order to successfully test novel stent designs, a ventilation chamber is needed to recreate the breathing conditions of the body.

The following describes the iterative development of a ventilation chamber, which allows inflation and deflation of lungs via negative pressure ventilation, as representative of an actual body undergoing respiration. Previous work shows that lungs are not …

Selective Synthesis And Characterization Of Single-Site Hy Zeolite-Supported Rhodium Complexes And Their Use As Catalysts For Ethylene Hydrogenation And Dimerization, Konstantin Khivantsev

Theses and Dissertations

Single-site Rh(CO)2, Rh(C2H4)2 and Rh(NO)2 complexes anchored on various dealuminated HY zeolites can be used as precursors for the selective surface mediated synthesis of well-defined site-isolated Rh(CO)(H)x complexes. DFT calculations and D2 isotope exchange experiments provide strong evidence for the formation of a family of site isolated mononuclear rhodium carbonyl hydride complexes (including the first examples of RhH complexes with undissociated H2 ligands): Rh(CO)(H2), Rh(CO)(H)2, and Rh(CO)(H). The fraction of each individual complex formed varies significantly with the Si/Al ratio of the zeolite and the nature of the precursor used.

HY zeolite-supported mononuclear Rh(CO)2 complexes are remarkably active in ethylene …

Propagated Image Segmentation Using Edge-Weighted Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation Based Methods, Youjie Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Propagated image segmentation is the problem of utilizing the existing segmentation of an image for obtaining a new segmentation of, either a neighboring image in a sequence, or the same image but in different scales. We name these two cases as the inter-image propagation and the intra-image propagation respectively. The inter-image propagation is particularly important to material science, where efficient and accurate segmentation of a sequence of 2D serial-sectioned images of 3D material samples is an essential step to understand the underlying micro-structure and related physical properties. For natural images with objects in different scales, the intra-image propagation, where segmentations …
