Verification And Validation Of Monte Carlo N-Particle 6 For Computing Gamma Protection Factors, William J. Erwin Mar 2015

Verification And Validation Of Monte Carlo N-Particle 6 For Computing Gamma Protection Factors, William J. Erwin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examined the suitability of a particle simulator known as "Monte Carlo n-Particle 6" (MCNP6) to determine how well U.S. Army vehicles shield their occupants from gamma radiation. MCNP6 compared favorably to three alternate modeling approaches and another particle simulator. In a validation experiment, MCNP6 was found to produce a gamma protection factor within 5% of the experimental result with 95% confidence. Further evaluations validated MCNP6's ability to produce reliable results with simplified or approximated inputs, model different sources, and position those sources in different shielding geometries. MCNP6 is suitable for evaluating gamma protection of Army vehicles and further …

Experimental And Numerical Study Of High-Speed Friction Stir Spot Welding Of Advanced High-Strength Steel, Utsab Karki Mar 2015

Experimental And Numerical Study Of High-Speed Friction Stir Spot Welding Of Advanced High-Strength Steel, Utsab Karki

Theses and Dissertations

With the desire to lighten the frame while keeping or increasing the strength, Advanced High-Strength Steels (AHSS) have been developed for use in the automotive industry. AHSS meet many vehicle functional requirements because of their excellent strength and acceptable ductility. But joining AHSS is a challenge, because weldability is lower than that of mild steels. Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is a solid state joining process that can provide a solution to the weldability issues in AHSS, but FSSW has not been studied in great detail for this application. In this work, Si3N4 tools were used for FSSW experiments on …

Modeling Stokes Flow Using Hierarchical Structure-Preserving B-Splines, Kendrick Monroe Shepherd Mar 2015

Modeling Stokes Flow Using Hierarchical Structure-Preserving B-Splines, Kendrick Monroe Shepherd

Theses and Dissertations

A new spline space, the hierarchical structure-preserving B-spline space, is introduced and implemented in the analysis of Stokes flow. The space, when properly constrained, is shown to be stable and to have at least optimal convergence rates in the velocity field and suboptimal convergence rates in the pressure field. However, results show that superoptimal convergence can often be expected in the pressure field, likely due to error reduction in the velocity field. Like other hierarchical spline spaces, these splines are shown to greatly increase accuracy and to drastically lower computation times for analyses on domains whose solution fields have singularities …

Using Remote Sensing To Explore The Time History Of Emergent Vegetation At Malheur Lake, Oregon, Zola Yaa Adjei

Theses and Dissertations

The growth patterns of emergent vegetation can be a useful indicator for factors affecting lake health. However, field data to characterize emergent vegetation at many reservoirs may not be available or may be limited to small, isolated areas. We present a case study using remotely sensed data from the Landsat satellite to generate data to represent emergent vegetation in the near-shoreline and tributary delta areas of Malheur Lake, Oregon. We selected late June images for this study as vegetation is relatively mature in late June and visible, but has not completely grown-in providing a better indication of vegetation coverage in …

Three-Dimensional Flow Measurements Around A Mechanical Flapping Wing, Eric R. Hardester Mar 2015

Three-Dimensional Flow Measurements Around A Mechanical Flapping Wing, Eric R. Hardester

Theses and Dissertations

Man has always been fascinated by the flight of birds and insects. First attempts at flight involved flapping wings to mimic the birds and insects that had been observed in flight. Fixed wings proved to be a more practical approach and have been used for over 100 years for manned flight. Emphasis has been placed on flapping wing designs for micro air vehicles (MAVs) as research has shown that challenges arise in lift generation and stability in fixed wing flight as the scale decreases [1].This research explores the use of 3D, time-resolved, Synthetic Aperture PIV (SAPIV) in measuring flow velocities …

Deployable And Foldable Arrays Of Spatial Mechanisms, Thomas Evans Mar 2015

Deployable And Foldable Arrays Of Spatial Mechanisms, Thomas Evans

Theses and Dissertations

This work evaluates a specific origami device known as the kaleidocycle and the broad classof rigidly foldable origami. Both of these have potential for application in the design of deployableand foldable arrays of spatial mechanisms.Origami is considered a compliant mechanisms because it achieves its motion through thedeflection of paper creases. Compliant mechanisms generally do not allow for continuous rotation;however, the compliant kaleidocycle represents an exception to this generality. Along with theirability to rotate continuously, kaleidocycles may also be designed to exhibit multistable behaviorduring this rotation. These two characteristics make the kaleidocycle an interesting device withpotential for applications in engineering. This …

Shear Strength Prediction Methods For Grouted Masonry Shear Walls, Patrick Dillon Mar 2015

Shear Strength Prediction Methods For Grouted Masonry Shear Walls, Patrick Dillon

Theses and Dissertations

The research in this dissertation is divided between three different approaches for predicting the shear strength of reinforcement masonry shear walls. Each approach provides increasing accuracy and precision in predicting the shear strength of masonry walls. The three approaches were developed or validated using data from 353 wall tests that have been conducted over the past half century. The data were collected, scrutinized, and synthesized using principles of meta-analysis. Predictions made with current Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC) shear strength equation are unconservative and show a higher degree of variation for partially-grouted walls. The first approach modifies the existing MSJC …

An Investigation Of The Impact Of A Flipped Classroom Instructional Approach On High School Students' Content Knowledge And Attitudes Toward The Learning Environment, Matthew R. Bell Mar 2015

An Investigation Of The Impact Of A Flipped Classroom Instructional Approach On High School Students' Content Knowledge And Attitudes Toward The Learning Environment, Matthew R. Bell

Theses and Dissertations

The idea of the “flipped classroom” is a relatively new concept in education that has become increasingly popular. Instructors who flip their classrooms reverse the roles of school work and homework by recording video lectures for students to watch before coming to class. Students then work on their homework in the classroom while the instructor is present to help them. Very little research has been done on the effectiveness of the flipped classroom to determine if students can perform better on exams by learning in a flipped classroom environment, especially for high school demographics. The purpose of this research is …

Deformation Twin Nucleation And Growth Characterization In Magnesium Alloys Using Novel Ebsd Pattern Analysis And Machine Learning Tools, Travis Michael Rampton

Theses and Dissertations

Deformation twinning in Magnesium alloys both facilitates slip and forms sites for failure. Currently, basic studies of twinning in Mg are facilitated by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) which is able to extract a myriad of information relating to crystalline microstructures. Although much information is available via EBSD, various problems relating to deformation twinning have not been solved. This dissertation provides new insights into deformation twinning in Mg alloys, with particular focus on AZ31. These insights were gained through the development of new EBSD and related machine learning tools that extract more information beyond what is currently accessed. The first tool relating …

The Programmatic Generation Of Discrete-Event Simulation Models From Production Tracking Data, Christopher Rand Smith Mar 2015

The Programmatic Generation Of Discrete-Event Simulation Models From Production Tracking Data, Christopher Rand Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Discrete-event simulation can be a useful tool in analyzing complex system dynamics in various industries. However, it is difficult for entry-level users of discrete-event simulation software to both collect the appropriate data to create a model and to actually generate the base-case simulation model. These difficulties decrease the usefulness of simulation software and limit its application in areas in which it could be potentially useful. This research proposes and evaluates a data collection and analysis methodology that would allow for the programmatic generation of simulation models using production tracking data. It uses data collected from a GPS device that follows …

Reducing Drifts In Buckling Restrained Braced Framesthrough Elastic Stories, Jennifer Lorraine Craft Mar 2015

Reducing Drifts In Buckling Restrained Braced Framesthrough Elastic Stories, Jennifer Lorraine Craft

Theses and Dissertations

It is possible to reduce residual and maximum drifts in buildings by adding “elastic stories” that engage gravity columns in seismic response. An elastic story is a story wherein the buckling restrained brace frame (BRBF) size is increased to prevent yielding when an earthquake occurs. Buildings ranging from 4–16 stories were designed with various elastic story brace sizes and locations to determine the optimal combination to best reduce drifts. Gravity column stiffnesses were also varied in elastic story buildings to determine the effects on drifts. Computer models were used to analyze these buildings under a suite of earthquakes. Adding elastic …

Preemptive Placement And Routing For In-Field Fpga Repair, Joshua E. Jensen Mar 2015

Preemptive Placement And Routing For In-Field Fpga Repair, Joshua E. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

With the growing density and shrinking feature size of modern semiconductors, it is increasingly difficult to manufacture defect free semiconductors that maintain acceptable levels of reliability for long periods of time. These systems are increasingly susceptible to wear-out by failing to meet their operational specifications for an extended period of time. The reconfigurability of FPGAs can be used to repair post-manufacturing faults by configuring the FPGA to avoid a damaged resource. This thesis presents a method for preemptively preparing to repair FPGA devices with wear-out faults by precomputing a set of repair circuits that, collectively, can repair a fault found …

Experimental Testing Of Shallow Embedded Connections Between Steel Columns And Concrete Footings, Nicholas Valgardson Barnwell Mar 2015

Experimental Testing Of Shallow Embedded Connections Between Steel Columns And Concrete Footings, Nicholas Valgardson Barnwell

Theses and Dissertations

Shallow embedded column connections are widely used for columns resisting gravity loads in current design methods. These connections are usually considered “pinned” for structural analysis. In reality these connections fall in between a fixed and a pinned condition. Although methods exist to estimate the stiffness and strength of exposed columns or embedded columns under lateral loads, little research has been done to determine the strength of shallow embedded columns. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the strength of these connections. A total of 12 specimens with varying orientation, embedment depth, and column size were loaded laterally until failure …

An Investigation Of Friction Stir Welding Parameter Effects On Post Weld Mechanical Properties In 7075 Aa, Steven B. Dickson

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of weld temperature, travel speed, and backing plate thermal diffusivity on themechanical properties of a weld have been studied. A face centered cubic experiment of designwas completed in which the response variables were yield strength, minimum hardness in the HAZ, and charpy impact toughness. Three models were created from the data gathered usinga stepwise regression in order to see the effects of each parameter. For the yield strength andminimum hardness it was found that only travel speed and backing plate thermal diffusivities werestatistically significant to the properties. The charpy impact toughness saw that all three parameterswere statistically significant …

Temperature And Stress Effect Modeling In Fatigue Of H13 Tool Steel At Elevated Temperatures With Applications In Friction Stir Welding, Bradley Valiant Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Tooling reliability is critical to welding success in friction stir welding, but tooling fatigue is not well understood because it occurs in conditions that are often unique to friction stir welding. A fatigue study was conducted on a commonly used tooling material, H13 tool steel, using constant stress loading at temperatures between 300°C and 600°C, and the results are presented. A model is proposed accounting for temperature and stress effects on fatigue life, utilizing a two-region Arrhenius temperature model. A transition in temperature effect on fatigue life is identified. Implications of the temperature effect for friction stir welding suggest that …

Uav Navigation And Radar Odometry, Eric Blaine Quist Mar 2015

Uav Navigation And Radar Odometry, Eric Blaine Quist

Theses and Dissertations

Prior to the wide deployment of robotic systems, they must be able to navigate autonomously. These systems cannot rely on good weather or daytime navigation and they must also be able to navigate in unknown environments. All of this must take place without human interaction. A majority of modern autonomous systems rely on GPS for position estimation. While GPS solutions are readily available, GPS is often lost and may even be jammed. To this end, a significant amount of research has focused on GPS-denied navigation. Many GPS-denied solutions rely on known environmental features for navigation. Others use vision sensors, which …

Characterization Of Geometrically Necessary Dislocation Content With Ebsd-Based Continuum Dislocation Microscopy, Tim Ruggles Feb 2015

Characterization Of Geometrically Necessary Dislocation Content With Ebsd-Based Continuum Dislocation Microscopy, Tim Ruggles

Theses and Dissertations

Modeling of plasticity is often hampered by the difficulty in accurately characterizing dislocationdensity on the microscale for real samples. It is particularly difficult to resolve measureddislocation content onto individual dislocation systems at the length scales most commonly of interestin plasticity studies. Traditionally, dislocation content is analyzed at the continuum levelusing the Nye tensor and the fundamental relation of continuum dislocation theory to interpret informationmeasured by diffraction techniques, typically EBSD or High Resolution EBSD. In thiswork the established Nye-Kroner method for resolving measured geometrically necessary dislocationcontent onto individual slip systems is assessed and extended. Two new methods are alsopresented to relieve …

Cameron Decomposition Applied To Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Signature Detection, Sean Wininger Jan 2015

Cameron Decomposition Applied To Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Signature Detection, Sean Wininger

Theses and Dissertations

Cameron et al, have developed a method of decomposing scatterer scattering matrices based on Huynen’s scattering matrix decomposition parameters. Huynen’s decomposition parameters are not unique, in that certain transformation properties, such as the angle of symmetry itself, may misidentify a scattering matriix and therefore misidentify a particular geometric shape. Cameron decomposition derives these parameters by direct calculations from the scatterer itself so that they may not be inferred or interpreted. A detailed explanation of the foundations and method of Cameron decomposition is presented here. A description of how Cameron decomposition is implemented in Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) signature detection …

Quantification Of The Effect Of Tool Geometric Features On Aspects Of Friction Stir Welding, Md. Reza-E-Rabby Jan 2015

Quantification Of The Effect Of Tool Geometric Features On Aspects Of Friction Stir Welding, Md. Reza-E-Rabby

Theses and Dissertations

In the friction stir welding (FSW) process, tool stirring and synchronized movement of the weld materials along a pre-existing seam line causes thermal gradients and severe plastic deformation resulting in the bonding of the adjacent materials. For a given set of welding parameters, tool pin geometries (dimensions, shape) and vertical/helical features that dictate the material motion also have significant effects on process response variables during FSW. Among the primary process controlling parameters in FSW, tool pin geometry and feature vary multifariously in terms of shape, dimensions, feature insertion technique depending on the weld material and application of joint. The current …

A Study On False Information Injection Attack On Dynamic State Estimation In Multi-Sensor Systems, Jingyang Lu Jan 2015

A Study On False Information Injection Attack On Dynamic State Estimation In Multi-Sensor Systems, Jingyang Lu

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the impact of false information injection is investigated for linear dynamic systems with multiple sensors. It is assumed that the Kalman filter system is unaware of the existence of false information and the adversary is trying to maximize the negative effect of the false information on the Kalman filter's estimation performance. First, a brief introduction to the Kalman filter is shown in the thesis. We mathematically characterize the false information attack under different conditions. For the adversary, many closed-form results for the optimal attack strategies that maximize the Kalman filter's estimation error are theoretically derived. It is …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to use non-standard Design of Experiments (DoE) inputs in Friction Stir Welding (FSW) to deduce relationships between various weld input and response variables. Typically, inputs for FSW DoE are tool rotational speed, welding speed and forge force. In this study, three different input factors were investigated: travel speed, thermal boundary conditions (TBC), and advance per revolution (APR). The experimental design included a full factorial with each factor at two levels plus two centerpoint runs. Response variables included weld temperature, microstructure, hardness, power, weld energy, and in plane forces.

An investigation of the effect of …
